Most villagers in Londoto have to do without clean water. Living in the shadow of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, the village’s 1,000 plus population must rely on dirty water from streams and rivers.

Disease and malnutrition flourish and children are particularly affected. It’s not a unique position but it is one we have decided to help change.

drill2Drink is a new charity formed for the simple reason no other water charity was working in this location. Our plan is to work with the local community to drill water boreholes.

In our preparations we have consulted WaterAid and other water charities none of which operate in this region of Tanzania.

We are small and have absolutely no overheads. Our trustees have determined that every penny we raise will go to bringing clean water to Londoto.

And there is another reason why we are there. Two of our trustees were climbing Kilimanjaro in 2015, and their guide explained the plight facing the people in his village. That guide, Juma Hemedi is a remarkable man and his persistence in helping us advance this project has been critical.

We have created a professional team in the UK, and registered drill2Drink with the Charity Commission.

The project has the full support and active involvement of the community in Londoto, and is designed to be affordable, even for the poorest residents, accountable and sustainable.

We are working with a key local partner, FT Kilimanjaro, a Dutch/Tanzanian NGO with whom we have established an ethical business relationship which will be critical to implementing a cost-effective, accountable and sustainable water supply, owned in perpetuity by the community in Londoto.

We intend by the way we conduct the project to ensure that it is implemented to the highest ethical and professional standards

We ask for your support in this endeavour:If after reading this leaflet, we convince you that turning this project into a reality would be a worthwhile use of your charitable monies, we ask you to pledge support.

We worked with the local community and FT Kilimanjaro (FTK) to identity the most needy location for the first bore hole. They recommended a location in the northern part of Londoto village, near Moshi in Northern Tanzania.

Enlisting the support of the local community and engaging their commitment was vital in ensuring the longevity and sustainability of the bore hole project.

Despite its close proximity to the city of Arusha and the town of Moshi, Londoto and its neighbouring village Msitu wa Tembo, are very rural, poor, and isolated. Livestock keeping, farming, agricultural business and small shops dominate.

Ninety-five percent of villagers rely on agriculture for food and income, but only 20% own land. Electricity is not generally available in the village and household incomes are some of the lowest in Tanzania.

In addition to the severe shortage of clean water there are several other major challenges facing the population. Our project will be integrated with others covering health, wealth generation, learning and infrastructure.

The inhabitants in the northern part of the village have no access to clean water - being reliant on dirty water drawn from the local Pangani river. This is why on the advice of the local community the borehole will be sited there.

The proposed borehole site is situated on communal land close to the village

FT Kilimanjaro (FTK) is a non-governmental organisation registered in Tanzania, the product of a joint initiative between the dutch FEMI Foundation and the sugar company TPC Ltd.

FEMI is a Public Benefit Organisation and NGO registered in The Netherlands. FTK aims to facilitate flourishing communities in Lower Moshi, void of poverty and despair, in a self-sustaining and environmentally responsible manner.

Guided by the concept of an integrated approach to development, with interventions applied simultaneously and across multiple sectors, FTK’s work is built around long term goals in four sectors

(Education, Health, Income, Infrastructure) that are interconnected.

Collaboration with the local community on structuring the control and sustainability of the project will be undertaken by FTK, who will also supervise the contractors drilling the borehole and the associated constructions.

FTK is committed to - and dependent on - developing partnerships with other stakeholders, including other NGO’s, government authorities, selected charities, the private sector and communities. For more information go to www.ftkilimanjaro.org

The borehole is set to serve over 1,000 inhabitants. Cosultations on its exact location and design were extensive before a final concept was decided upon.

Capacity:Based on expected usage of 50 litres of water per person per day a delivery of 50,000 daily litres is required.

Location: This has taken account of both social and hydrogeological considerations. The Londoto Village council, the Pangani Water Board and our partners FTK have all played their part.

Specifications: In addition to the creation of a lined and sealed borehole approximately 80 metres deep and 6 inches in diameter, the installation will comprise of a pump, three storage tanks each holding 10,000 litres and an array of solar panels.

Control: A metered distribution tap linked to tanks will be adminstered by a locally appointed water manager who will also be responsible for receiving payments from users. Our partners FTK will oversee its administration.

Charges: These will remain low, 25 Tanzanian shillings (less than £0.08) per 20 litre bucket is envisaged and the village council will make special arrangements for the very poorest sections of the community

It is not practicable to pipe water directly into homes so the water will be collected by users in their own containers. This reality has been an important factor in the siting of the borehole to minimise carrying distances. The solar panels will ensure that the functioning of the bore hole and the provision of water is not dependent on local power which is largely unavailable in the area.

Costs:Submitted tenders by contractors for the full installation and education programme mean that drill2Drink is seeking to raise £25,000 to implement the project. Every penny we raise will go towards that target which we are striving to raise by 30th September 2019.

The provision of clean water is just part of the challenge. The experience of water organisations and charities throughout the world is that sanitation and education in the use of water is just as important as the supply of clean water.

Working with FTK we are committed to ensuring that drill2Drink combines these three elements.

The UN adopted WASH programme Water, Sanitation and Hygiene will be our guide, For example, without toilets, water sources become contaminated; without clean water.

All the three dimensions of WASH support and strengthen one another. If one is missing, the others cannot progress.

The Village water committee and with the help of FTK and other supportive agencies will organise an ongoing educational programme to help the villagers implement healthy practices.

Every effort has been taken to ensure the installation is sustainable. The support of the village committee has been essential in this and their decision to create a water committee to oversee the operation of the bore hole, supported by FTK.

Additionally the cost structure allows for part of the monies paid by users will go to maintenance, repairs and ultimate replacement of the installation.

These tasks will also be overseen by the Village Committee in accordance with agreements they

have undertaken into the FTK with drill2Drink’s support.

On a day-to-day basis the site will be protected by fencing erected by the Contracter with the village committee taking on responsibility for its security and employing personnel to do this. Support for the village water committee will be given by FTK as necessary and the Pangani Water Board which is responsible for drinking water quality will also be available to assist.

CLEAN WATER IS NOT ENOUGH

SUSTAINABILITY

Our aim is pretty straightforward. Access to clean water is a basic for any society - without it health and life cannot not be sustained for long.

In Londoto the people urgently need clean drinking water. If we are able to raise £25,000 to ensure this bore hole is drilled then every villager will suddenly have their lives transformed.

We hold a key slice of their future in our hands and we will do everything possible to ensure we succeed.

Will you help us? Every pound we raise will go to making this borehole a reality.
