FjordsA fjord is formed when a glacier cuts a U-

shaped valley by abrasion of the surrounding bedrock.

Fjords generally have a sill or rise at their mouth caused by the previous glacier's terminal moraine, in many cases causing extreme currents .

Norway is often described as the world's strongest tidal current.

These characteristics distinguish fjords from rias (e.g. the Bay of Kotor), which are drowned valleys flooded by the rising sea.

GlaciersA glacier  is a large persistent body of ice that

forms where the accumulation of snow exceeds its ablation over many years, often centuries.

At least 0.1 km² in area and 50 m thick, but often much larger, a glacier slowly deforms and flows due to stresses induced by its weight.

Glaciers form on land, often elevated, and are distinct from the much thinner sea ice and lake ice that form on the surface of bodies of water.
