We are often asked how we measure our success at the Settlement. This is how we respond..

We do not claim to work miracles. Instead, day-by-day, week-by-week, we provide resources and services to children and their families that show them that they have options in life, no matter what their circumstances, and then assist them in developing the skills and resources they need to make wise choices. We open doors to opportunity and consider our work successful when a child graduates from high school and starts college, when a father gets a promotion at work, or when a mother sends yet another child to House In The Wood Camp because she knows it is having a positive impact. Our ultimate goal is to help our immigrant and low-income neighbors become active participants in the American Dream. This may not happen overnight, but the changes we see in our neighbors over the weeks, months and years is evidence that our programming has both a measurable short-term impact, as well as a long-term effect on their families and their futures.

The theme of this year’s annual report is “step by step”. Families facing many challenges do not reach self-sufficiency overnight. Fulfilling the American Dream for oneself and ones family takes time, effort, sacrifice and oftentimes, courage. In these pages you will meet four Settlement families who are on a journey, moving step by step toward fulfillment of their own personal dreams. With the support of family, friends, and of course, the Settlement, we are confident that they will continue moving forward, one step at a time, until they reach their goals. We hope you find their stories inspiring.

The Settlement itself took a major step this past year – planning and opening the long anticipated Rowe Elementary School. This is by far the largest endeavor we’ve ever undertaken, and we are proud of and grateful for the numerous partners who have helped to make it possible, from Bain & Company; John, Jeanne and Bill Rowe; Exelon Corporation; Renaissance Schools Fund and Chicago Public Schools; to our staff and board members – all of whom worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality.

We would like to invite you to visit our Settlement House – it is a unique and wonderful place that is all about people, relationships and creating opportunities.

Sincerely,

A Message From The Chairman & President

Glenn DalhartChairman of the Board

The School Age Program offers school readiness and recreational activities for children ages 3 to 12. The program operates between 12:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. during the school year and all day during the summer. Through the School Age Program, the Settlement counters the problems that occur in the lives of our youth by developing skills for success. The School Age Program has many components, including After School, Extended Day, Doorway to Knowledge, and Summer Adventure Camp. The School Age Program served 143 children in fiscal year 2009.

House In The Wood provides campers with positive alternatives to negative urban lifestyles within the context of an outdoor camp experience. On 26 acres alongside Lake Delavan in Wisconsin, this year-round residential camp provides overnight, weekend and week-long camping to low-income children and families as well as community groups from across Chicagoland. During the summer of 2009, House In The Wood served 298 children and 43 families.

Head Start provides early childhood development support to children aged 3 to 5 and their families during the school year. Children participate in either morning or afternoon half-day sessions. Each day, Head Start teachers and aides use a combination of educational play and song to teach essential skills from learning the alphabet to brushing one’s teeth. Parents and guardians are encouraged to participate through volunteer and personal development activities. Head Start served 78 children in 2009.

EducationAmeriCorps Project YES! connects caring adults with youth in and around the West Town community through mentorship as well as educational, service, artistic, and recreational activities. These initiatives support students’ academic achievement, provide them with positive alternatives to destructive behaviors, and foster an ethic of service in the entire community. In 2009, Project YES! coordinated 32 AmeriCorps members in 6 schools and 2 community organizations.

5Annual Report 2009

After 2 years of meticulous research and planning, the largest program endeavor ever undertaken by Northwestern Settlement finally opened its doors in temporary space on September 8, 2009 – Rowe Elementary School.

Rowe Elementary School cultivates the desire and expectation to go to college by teaching scholars and their families how to succeed academically and socially. Teachers deliver an academically rigorous curriculum infused with unique social and emotional support opportunities through the integration of other Settlement programs such as AmeriCorps, House In The Wood, Adventure Stage Chicago and the After School program... Our school will serve 150 kindergarten, first-grade, and second-grade scholars during the 2009-2010 school year and will grow to over 600 kindergarten through eighth-grade students by 2014.

Many steps and partners were needed to make this exciting dream a reality for Settlement families, staff, boards and supporters. Through the Chicago-based Renaissance Schools Fund, the Settlement was introduced to Bain & Company, a global business and financial consulting firm with a deep interest in actively participating in public education reform. The two organizations joined forces in 2008 to create a new elementary school based on

intensive research and national best practices. From designing the school strategy and operating plan to supporting preparations for opening, significant Bain consultant resources have been devoted to ensuring a top-caliber educational experience for all students.

In 2009, the Rowe family – John, who serves as Chairman and CEO of Exelon Corporation, his wife Jeanne, and their son Bill, an attorney – joined the team along with Exelon Corporation, adding to the financial and operational strength of the newly named Rowe Elementary School. The Rowes have long supported education reform in Chicago, with a special interest in charter schools. As naming donor, the Rowe family has shown a remarkable willingness to commit their time, energy and resources to helping Rowe Elementary School reach its goal of becoming one of the best elementary schools in the city.

An intensive recruiting effort brought outstanding leadership and instructional staff from across the country to be the founding faculty for our school. In the coming first year of operation we will focus on the very important tasks of implementing our data driven instructional model, building a strong culture, and finally, locating a permanent home for the school.

For nearly 120 years, the Emergency Services Program helped neighbors with short-term crises, providing a quick and caring response to their needs. All of the families and individuals in the Emergency Services Program complete an intensive in-take/needs assessment process. This program is comprised of a food pantry, direct assistance program, financial assistance program, crisis counseling, referrals, and holiday assistance. The need of our neighbors continues to grow each year, and the Emergency Services Program served 2,517 families in 2009. More than half of the neighbors that sought assistance from another program at the Settlement also received assistance from the Emergency Services Program. In 2009, the Emergency Services Program distributed 392,024 pounds of food to needy families.

The Settlement also serves as a central point around which many other events and services are offered, such as holiday family events, adult education, and social activities. English as a Second Language classes, provided in partnership with City Colleges, teach basic grammar and conversation skills to Spanish, Polish, and Ukrainian-speaking adults. The Golden Agers Club provides weekly social support activities for adults aged 55 and over, including Bingo, special events, and field trips. Settlement facilities are also available to outside groups on the evenings and weekends, including Alcoholics Anonymous, Chicago Alternative Policing (CAPS) meetings, and neighborhood associations.

“I think our audience values Adventure Stage Chicago because they feel challenged and engaged by our work. They recognize themselves onstage and are compelled by those situations that feel familiar. And it doesn’t really matter that we’re a “theatre for young audiences.” Even the adults in the crowd were 10 years old once and not much changes, despite the times. My job is to make sure everyone in our audience leaves feeling like they’ve been on a journey that respected their intelligence, their curiosity, and their imagination.”

– Tom Arvetis, Producing Artistic Director of Adventure Stage Chicago

Adventure Stage Chicago (ASC) creates dynamic theatre for young audiences that activates the imagination, inspires dialogue, and celebrates community among families, educators, and artists. ASC also offers professional development through workshops in addition to artistic residencies and resources that offer concrete ways to incorporate drama in the classroom. From across the City of Chicago, 32,653 theatre patrons, including 13,653 students and 310 educators enjoyed ASC’s dynamic performances and educational services in fiscal year 2009.

The CCT Gallery is a community art gallery that showcases 3 professional shows of artists’ work and 1 student show each year. The Gallery is open to the public and displays paintings, textiles, sculpture and photography of Chicago-based artists. 300 guests visited the gallery in 2009.

Auxiliary BoardsThe Settlement is supported by 6 active Auxiliary Boards: Associates Board, Chicago Board, Evanston Woman’s Board, North Shore Board, Park Ridge Board, and Winnetka Board, in addition to the main Board of Directors. Over 250 members participated in social and fundraising activities to support the Settlement in fiscal year 2009. Members contribute to annual fundraising events in addition to contributing their time to service projects within Settlement programming. Auxiliary Boards’ fundraising proceeds benefit both general operating and program specific needs.

Imagination and Collaboration at Adventure Stage Chicago

Teachers, students, and parents alike discover and enjoy theatre for young audiences at Adventure Stage Chicago. Sarah Rose Graber, ensemble member and teaching artist, learned about ASC during her senior showcase performance at Northwestern University when she was invited to audition for a show. Having studied children’s storytelling and theatre education as well as performed for young audiences, she finds it “so rewarding and fascinating to watch children be challenged by a show. And, learning to express yourself, carry yourself with confidence, speak clearly, think critically – those are hugely important skills for middle-schoolers!” As a teaching artist, Sarah explains that teaching storytelling is “an amazing way to connect. Theatre is ensemble-based, so a group of people need to come together, work collaboratively, and share universal experiences. Storytelling helps kids use the arts as not only an outlet for expression, but a way to solve problems.” In the future, Sarah will continue to explore and develop as both an actress and teacher by participating with ASC in “a community that truly values theatre as an essential part of human existence.”

A Home-Away-From-Home at House In The Wood Camp

When you first meet Tuesday Bankston-Williams, you notice both her warmth and her commitment to her kids. “Robert is my youngest. Leander, my oldest, is overcoming the challenges of autism.” In a world where people usually stare, gawk, or whisper about her family, Tuesday was relieved to finally find a home-away-from-home at House In The Wood where she and her boys have attended Family Camp for the past 5 years.

Tuesday was worried about the transition to House In The Wood for Leander, but she found that the staff “really cared about both of my sons as individuals. They related to us and really connected with my sons. House In The Wood is a whole other world. To watch these city boys swim in a lake for the first time, understand what nature brings to their lives, and feel at peace…that’s the best reward for a mother.”

Each year brings change for the Bankston-Williams family. “I never owned luggage before. But after our first year at camp, I bought some because I knew we would keep going back! By the second year,” says Tuesday, “They hired a counselor who worked with people with autism. To have an understanding, enthusiastic counselor waiting for Leander at the front gate made us feel so special.”

This past year, Tuesday herself began exploring: “There was Yoga for moms, and I also took up walking. I was walking down Bay Road one morning, realizing that I needed to make a commitment to my family’s health, and it just clicked – now we walk as a family nearly every day!”

“House In The Wood offers a safe space staffed with caring adults in a world that is often dangerous and abusive for our campers. We teach and model valuable life lessons that our children have not had an opportunity to learn either in the family or at school. We allow our children who often have adult responsibilities at home an opportunity to have fun and learn more about themselves as they play. We offer structure and discipline to help them sort out their priorities and manage their lives. And lastly, we open up their world and help them experience new and different ideas, activities and ways of doing things.”

Mind, Body, and Soul: Holistic Family Care at the Settlement

Marylynn Villanueva and her 3 kids were robbed 2 years ago just before school started. “We lost everything and the kids had nothing. The Settlement gave us new shoes, clothes, and school supplies. What a blessing! I really admire the Settlement’s commitment and I’m so grateful.”

Marylynn’s children – ages 7,11, and 13,– have participated in Head Start, School Age Programs, and Summer Adventure Camp. “My kids have grown up here,” says Marylynn. “It’s their second home, their hang out spot. You feel friendliness right when you walk in.”

As a full-time certified nurse, Marylynn’s top priority is finding quality care for her children while she works. Settlement services exceeded her expectations. ”My children are more than prepared for school. They understand the basics, and more! I’m looking forward to helping my children not to be scared of success. I’m up for that.”

Marylynn is also looking forward to building a career. Reaching for a higher degree will provide job satisfaction in addition to more opportunities for the Villanueva family: “We are trying to purchase our dream home. I want my kids to say, ‘My mom did this because of us.’ It’s a long journey, but I know we can get there together.”

Emergency Services: From Helped to Helper

“I literally could not get groceries to feed my family,” says Caroline Silva. “When I got laid off from my customer service job, when we got our 30-days notice, a lot of people were hit hard. Some were even crying.” Thankfully, Caroline knew just where to turn..

Caroline first heard about the Settlement when a friend recommended that she enroll her son, Elias, in Head Start. “I knew the Settlement had a food pantry, but I didn’t really know how much it helped people.” For Caroline, her total savings and unemployment income are too high to qualify for LINK, Illinois’ food stamp program. But without her regular income, she had to cut down on basic expenses in order to keep a roof over their heads. “No matter who you are, Emergency Services can help. Any little bit helps. The Settlement has really helped us make ends meet.”

Since she is not working, Caroline has decided to give back by volunteering. “Staying home is so hard when you’re unemployed, so I come to the Settlement to be active and involved.” By helping out at the food pantry, Caroline has learned a lot about those the Settlement serves: “One time, this older lady told me that her food stamps had run out. But it was the middle of the month, so she got some groceries to tide her over. Another lady told me that the Settlement saved her family from eviction because they got rental assistance.” Volunteering keeps Caroline busy as she looks for a job through a local employment agency. In the meantime, she plans to start school in January to study law enforcement in order to give her family more stability. “I keep telling Elias that ‘knowledge is power’ so I need to set the example by taking responsibility for our future.”

"We don’t categorize people as clients here, they are our neighbors. And we treat them with respect and dignity. Our neighbors aren’t numbers to us and they know the Settlement will go the extra mile for each of them. In Emergency Services, we provide quality care for neighbors in crisis.”

- Belna Reyes, Director of Emergency Services

In Memory of Daniel W. Vittum, Jr.

We would like to say a special thank you to our friend Dan Vittum, who passed away this summer. As Board Chair and General Counsel for many years, Dan was the champion for our Centennial Capital Campaign, which resulted in the opening of Evanston Hall and the Vittum Theater/Adventure Stage Chicago. He also led our efforts to co-found Noble Street Charter School in 1998, which subsequently paved the way for our own Rowe Elementary today. Dan’s legacy to the Settlement is enormous, and we will always remember him with gratitude and love. His dedication will forever benefit children and families in Chicago.

Our Mission and Vision

Northwestern Settlement helps low-income families and individuals take personal responsibility, explore opportunities and options, and become or remain

self-sufficient by providing a central point around which social and specialized services, education, arts and collaborative programs can be accessed.

The Settlement equips its neighbors with the tools they need to succeed. Our entire program is based upon the concept of individual and family

self-help, and the underlying philosophy that every person deserves to maximize his or her potential to become a productive member of

society. Through more than 70 different programs and services, our staff and hundreds of volunteers work with nearly 8,000 neighbors each year through core programming and 32,000 through our theater.

All programs are interwoven to provide a continuum of services and opportunities to the families who access our services. We focus on providing resources to our neighbors in three key areas: assistance for the immediate short-term

crisis; knowledge, opportunities, and support to break out of poverty over the long-term; and access to a network of additional programs and services.
