Historic Cemetery Stroll @ Oakhill Cemetery - North

Thursday, June 25th We enjoyed this SO much last year that we are heading to a different cemetery to hear and learn more! This stroll will be full of amazing architecture and stories behind Grand Rapids' past power brokers. This guided tour will take us through the historic north side of Oakhill, a 75-acre park-like cemetery located at Hall Street and Eastern Ave SE in Grand Rapids. The cemetery is filled with grave markers, monuments and mausoleums that provide a tangible link to 175 years of history in the Grand Valley, and the people who built Grand Rapids’ one-time reputation as the Furniture Capital of the World.

The rigors of the walk are no more than moderately paced, and involves walking and standing, mostly on paved surfaces.

Tom Dilley is a local historian and member of the Grand Rapids Historical Society. He has led this tour annually and will share his passion with us! Depart center/9:00 a.m. Cost: $10

Fernwood Botanical Garden & Nature Preserve Thursday, July 30th

Located in Niles, MI, Fernwood began as a country home with 12.5 acres in 1941. During the years that followed, Fernwood became a popular gathering place for those who shared the owner’s love of nature, horticulture, and the craft arts. In 1964 Fernwood became a public place through the efforts of a Niles philanthropist. Additional land purchases increased the size to 105 acres, providing space for an arboretum, prairie restoration, and additional gardens. Although a docent will be on hand for our group, you may choose to wander on your own as well. You will have time to enjoy the gardens, walking paths to the St. Joseph River, nature center and visitors center. An on-site café can be enjoyed for your lunch on-your-own. There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy your time at Fernwood! We will be there from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Did You Know?

. . . that Maggie’s Attic Garage Sale appreciates you NOT bringing in donations the day of the sale. One week prior OR before would be great! . . . that if you need to cancel from an event it is appreciated if you contact Christine so she may offer it to someone on the wait list instead of you replacing them with a friend. . . . that many of our outings and day trips have the chance to “encore”. Meaning we can run it again if we get enough people to sign up! Always contact Christine to see how it is filling up!
