    SVC to Host Graduate School Fair

    The Mark Skinner Library hosts Music from the Shelves at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29.

    This family concert, a part-nership between Manchester Music Festival and Mark Skinner Library, features the string quartet of Joana Genova and David Lisker, violins; Ariel Rudiakov, viola; and Benjamin Capps, cello, playing music from classical to jazz, Ellington to Vivaldi.

    Music From the ShelvesThe Bennington Center for the Arts will host

    the prestigious Oil Painters of America 2012 Eastern Regional Exhibition from Sept. 29 through Oct. 28, with several events taking place this weekend with the visiting artists.

    Opening events include lectures, demos and a display of work by the artists who will be paint-ing around Bennington on Friday, Sept. 29. Starting at 9 a.m., Master Signature Artist and show juror Kenn Backhaus will conduct a paint-ing demonstration. At 2 p.m., guest lecturer Michael Cassin from the Sterling and Francine Clark Institute will present a talk on three of the Clarks most pre-eminent artists, Winslow Homer, Frederic Remington and John Singer Sargent.

    An opening reception for the artists will begin at 5:30 p.m. All of the above events are free and open to the public. The evening concludes with a concert by folk music legend Tom Rush at 8 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $35.

    We really hope that those around the area interested in art will be able to come and spend time with us for this exciting weekend, said Gallery Director Shirley Hutchins. Some very talented artists will be here, and the educational opportunities for artists and art lovers alike are wonderful.

    The Oil Painters of Americas goal for the show is to assemble the finest display of repre-sentational oil paintings created by their mem-bership. More than 90 pieces were juried into the show by artists from as far away as Alabama and Newfoundland. The total awards will be approxi-mately $11,500, including a $4,000 Best in Show award. All work is for sale.

    Amherst College professor Michele Barale will discuss the work of novelist Willa Cather in a talk entitled Willa Cathers Prairie Landscapes at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the First Congregational Church in Manchester. The talk is part of the Vermont Humanities Councils First Wednesdays lec-ture series.

    The European immigrant farmers in My Antonia and Cathers other novels fail nearly as often as they succeed. Professor Barale will examine the relationship between Cathers art and her very tangi-ble earth.

    Barale is the Thalheimer Professor of English and Womens and Gender Studies and Director of the Writing Center at Amherst College. She has a long-time interest in Willa Cathers writing and photogra-phy. Her recent publications on Cather have focused on Cathers attitudes about artistic inspira-tion.

    The Vermont Humanities

    Councils First Wednesdays series is held on the first Wednesday of every month from October through May. Talks in Manchester are held at First Congregational Church unless otherwise noted, and are hosted by Mark Skinner Library. All First Wednesdays talks are free and open to the public.

    The Poultney Chamber of Commerces 23rd annual Chili Cook-off is, of course, the main event in town on Saturday, Sept. 29, but there are a lot of events going on around the cook-off itself.

    More than 25 chili artists are expected bring at least five gal-lons of chili for the event, which goes on rain or shine.

    Cooking begins at 8 a.m., music starts at 10 a.m., and tast-ing runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Admission for tasters is $8 and includes a tasting cup and samples of all the chili avail-able.

    Among the cooks, the overall winner will take home $300 and will claim the title of Vermont Chili Champion. The second-place finisher gets $250.

    There will be $100 prizes for best chili by popular vote, best student chili and best vegetari-an chili. The best theme booth will get $50.

    A silent auction will be held as part of the Chili Cook-off.

    Those interested in donating to the silent auction should call Valerie Broughton at 236-2790.

    The cook-off is just part of a full day of events in downtown Poultney, and the day does get going early.

    Registration for the Poultney Rotary Chili Cook-Off 5K Fun Run begins at 8 a.m. at The Station, corner of Main and Depot streets in Poultney.     Making Strides Event Kicks Off Cancer Fundraising

    Does your dog like to dock dive? Do you enjoy watching the dock diving excitement? If so, mark your calendars for a splashing good time! The Lake House Pub and Grille in Bomoseen is hosting the fourth annual dog dock diving compe-tition to benefit the Rutland County Humane Society. The fun will take place on Sunday, Sept. 30, at The Lake House Pub and Grille. Registration begins at 11, practice jumps begin at noon and competitive jumps begin around 1.

    Each dog will get a practice jump and a competitive jump. The 10 dogs with the longest jump will reach the finals for a

    third jump. There will be prizes for the top three jumps for length as well as biggest splash and most comical!

    Tickets are $5 for entry or viewing and can be purchased at The Lake House Pub and Grille, The Pet Cage (Rutland) and the RCHS shelter (Pittsford). Tickets can also be purchased at the door.
