NIU arranges programs to train the PKPI scholars in understanding and practicing the basic elements of academic writing that are standard in international academic publication. Why NIU? The 2015 PKPI Program

Introduction

Northern Illinois University offers the opportunity for doctoral students studying

at Indonesian Universities to participate in “The 2015 PKPI Program” at

Northern Illinois University, USA. By joining this program, the students will

work under the supervision of a selected professors to develop and advance their

research projects or articles for publication. NIU arranges programs to train the

PKPI scholars in understanding and practicing the basic elements of academic

writing that are standard in international academic publication.

Why NIU?

With seven degree-granting colleges, NIU offers 60 undergraduate majors, 70

graduate programs, and more than 20 fields of studies leading to doctoral degrees.

NIU is located in the city of DeKalb, Illinois, just 65 miles west of Chicago.

NIU has a strong reputation in Indonesia and is currently developing academic

partnerships with several Indonesian universities.

Some of the notable NIU alumni from Indonesia include Ryaas Rasyid, Affan

Gaffar, Anies Baswedan, Riswandha Imawan, Andi A. Mallarangeng, Ichlasul

Amal, Ramlan Surbakti, Nico Harjanto, and Philips J. Vermonte.

Facilities for PKPI Scholars:

Access to the NIU library’s reference materials, databases and the Donn V. Hart

Southeast Asia Collection.

Research mentorships with an NIU professor.

Weekly class on how to publish in international academic journals.

Free seminars on campus.

On-campus housing, which includes a meal plan with some amenities (internet

access, computer lab, and writing center).

O’Hare International Airport pick-up and return.

One-day tour to Chicago, including courtesy visit to the Indonesian Consulate.

Program Fees and Expenses:

PKPI scholars are responsible for covering their own travel and expenses

(accommodation, meals, health insurance, daily allowance) while in the United

States and for program fees. Successful applicants are encouraged to apply to

DIKTI to cover these costs.

How to apply?

Please submit a letter of application along with your abstract/research plan (300-

400 words explaining the topic of your research, research question, and

theoretical contribution) and curriculum vitae to Professor Judy Ledgerwood,

Director of the NIU Center for Southeast Asian Studies, at: [email protected]

All of the required documents as mentioned above should be written in English.

Successful applicants will receive a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) indicating when

they could start the program, their mentors, and the cost of the program.
