Kitchen Tour TimeHard to believe that we are gearing up for our 6th Ultimate Up North

Kitchen Tour! ̃ is year the tour features 12 stunning kitchens scattered along an equally stun-

ning route that leads from Burt Lake near the tip of the mitt, down to Glen Arbor in the Sleeping

Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Our kitchen designers have outdone themselves this year, and, as

always, we couldn’t make this tour happen without our generous homeowners.

˜ e tour has become such a fact of life in my yearly calendar that I’ve come to associate it with

the harvest, October and the changing season (sweaters, ÿ res, warm apple pie …). Very ÿ tting, I

think, since gathering in the kitchen is what makes the “coming inside time of year” so special.

Which brings me to a kitchen design trend that especially spoke to me this year: range hoods that

are built-out to look more like ÿ replace hearths than the industrial-vibe stainless and/or stainless

and glass we’ve come to know.

My favorite take on the hood-as-hearth idea in this year’s tour is Angela Goodall’s stacked-stone

masterpiece in kitchen #12. It is handsome, timeless and evokes an ancient call to gather round the

ÿ re—just like any hearth should. Stove as hearth. So ÿ tting. So much the reason why our Ultimate

Up North Kitchen Tour continues to be such a draw.

Hope to see you on the tour!

Welcome to the 2013 Ultimate Up North Kitchen Tour!Saturday, October 12! Twelve fabulous kitchens scattered along the spec-tacularly gorgeous Northwest Michigan coast are open for your viewing.

Th is tour wends through some of Northern Michigan’s most charming towns—Brutus, Conway, Petoskey, Boyne City, Traverse City and Glen Arbor. Th e route is stuff ed with delicious eateries and delectable boutiques that can turn the tour into an unforgettable experience. While most folks won’t make all 12 kitchens in a day (the reason we price the tour so reason-ably), with some forward planning it is possible to see most of them.

As always, we thank our partners in this tour, the talented and professional designers of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). We are so thankful to the volunteers from Child and Family Services of Northwestern Michigan who are dedicating their time to this event. Likewise, we are delighted to say that the tour benefi ts this wonderful organization.

Read on for a sneak preview of the kitchens—and away we go!PRODUCED BY:

Designer Kathy McCreight’s mission in this kitchen in a family cottage

on Burt Lake was twofold. First she updated the 1970s-era kitchen while

preserving the rustic spirit of the rest of the cottage. Secondly, she needed

to provide the homeowners with a place to settle for casually eating, serv -

ing, visiting, working at laptops, drinking morning coffee … where they

could enjoy a lake view.

Kathy used rustic alder cabinets and a coffee-toned ash floor to harmo-

nize with the knotty pine paneling in the rest of the cottage. A backsplash of

rough-cut, stacked quartz stone plays off the stone fireplace in the adjacent

living room. By strategically mounting a glass-fronted wall cabinet atop

the counter cabinets, Kathy created the illusion of an old-fashioned hutch.

Gold-toned cielo de oro granite on the perimeter countertops and on the

island emphasizes the room’s warm tones.

And that island: Kathy knew it had to be large and multi-functional—so

she designed a 49-square-foot dream staging area (custom shaped to fit the

room) that switch-hits from working to entertaining. A pop-up outlet is

there when needed and disappears when not—charge a laptop, heat a

crockpot stew. Likewise, a built-in lift-up mixer shelf makes getting out (and

putting back) the KitchenAid mixer a breeze. The island even has a file

drawer to store paper work. But the best seats at that island, of course, are

the four that look directly out the new sliding glass door that frames a pic-

ture-perfect view of Burt Lake.

Kitchen designer Brooke Anderson worked

with homeowner Mimi Boon to imbue the

kitchen of her new condominium on Crooked

Lake with a sense of elegant tradition. Glazed-

white, pillowed (meaning the rails are raised

and rounded) cabinets add understated lux -

ury. Two tiers of wall cabinets lend coziness

to the cathedral ceiling that rises 10 feet at

its peak. The custom-fabricated range hood

is camouflaged inside the cabinetry, a touch

that helps minimize modern sensibilities and

highlights an Old World feel.

Antarctica granite has the rich luster of

marble, while hand-molded subway tiles feel

as though they could be antiquities. The Old

World look continues down to the hand-

scraped, wide-plank cherry floors that are

stained a dark mahogany. The gorgeous

island countertop is maple, stained to match

the floor, and made by Northern Michigan’s

own Michigan Maple Block company.

Craig Rose, owner of Hearthside Grove Luxury Motorcoach Resort,

wanted his resort’s clubhouse kitchen to be welcoming to resort guests

and to function as a professional kitchen for hosting cooking demon -

strations. Enter award-winning kitchen designer Dawn Whyte, who

found herself faced with an additional challenge when she took on the

job: one side of the kitchen is a steel bi-fold door that opens to a seated

auditorium, meaning that Dawn had only three walls on which to hang

cabinets, mount countertops and set appliances.

This designer thrives on challenges, so no problem there! By outfit-

ting the kitchen with a 21-foot-long peninsula and two islands, Dawn

gave the kitchen ample space for work, storage and staging. The

kitchen’s high-end Wolf /Sub-Zero appliances and a commercial sink

faucet make motorcoach resort guests and their visitors happy to

cook. Wood grain ceramic tile flooring offers the look of the real thing

but will hold up to anything anyone using the kitchen dishes out.

Dawn used color and texture to create a room that transcends

straightforward function. Scandinavian gray cabinetry glazed in a

warm lemon shade sets a crisp yet homey tone. Marblelike Cambria

Torquay counters add an elegant touch that is contrasted by a wall

covered in rustic stacked stone. An exuberant Soho glass tile back -

splash mirrors the variety of neutral, earthy tones in the kitchen. The

final touch, twin glass and stainless chandeliers designed by Dawn’s

business partner, Renee Guthrie (Renee Guthrie Design), are a bril-

liant, whimsical touch.

The upshot is a kitchen that does everything Craig wanted and

more: When he and his wife Edith want to invite more guests to din -

ner than can comfortably fit in the kitchen of their nearby renovated

Victorian, they move the party over to the kitchen that feels like

home, only bigger.

Pat Campbell loves cooking and he especially loves cooking break -

fast for his grandchildren. And now that designer Jill Brecheisen has

helped design the kitchen of his (and of his wife Ellen’s) dreams, he is

going to love cooking even more. The kitchen is set on the lake side of

the Campbell’s new classic-style cottage. Like the rest of the cottage,

the kitchen is outfitted with the kind of architectural details that spell

vintage Northern Michigan cottage: beadboard ceiling, painted wood

beams, double-hung windows, hand-scraped wide-planked wood floor

and handsome custom trim. Cabinetry panels disguise the modern

KitchenAid dishwasher and Sub-Zero refrigerator.

While the cabinets are all cottage-white, a prep and storage island

embellished with furniture-style legs and stained pewter gray lends an

air of tradition. A butler’s pantry outfitted with wine storage rounds

out this beautifully efficient kitchen. Marble countertops, a matching

marble range back splash and the pale blue ceiling pull the white and

gray color theme together.

With its mantel-style hood that matches the cabinetry, the range is one

focal point of the kitchen. But for Pat and Ellen, the true focal point will be

when they turn from the stove on summer days and see their grandchil-

dren seated at the custom beadboard banquette across the room.

In 1970, when Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore offi cially

became a part of America’s magnifi cent national park system, the

world-class dune and water vistas that stretch along Lake Michigan’s

eastern shore in Northwest Michigan were relatively unknown out-

side the Midwest. Over the course of four decades, the National Park

Service has carefully opened up and interpreted this precious land-

scape—35 miles of mainland shoreline and the Manitou Islands—to

people from all points of the globe. The 1 million-plus annual visitors

to this park invariably leave inspired by its beauty and refl ective about

its interplay of cultural and natural resources. After spending their

days hiking, swimming, fi shing, boating, lazing on sandy beaches,

splashing in azure water and gazing at fi ery sunsets across the water,

visitors also come away relaxed and rejuvenated—blessed by the fore-

sight that preserved a national treasure. Sleeping Bear Dunes National

Lakeshore’s growing acclaim was highlighted in the summer of 2011

when Good Morning America viewers voted it the “Most Beautiful

Place in America.”

The production of Beautiful Sleeping Bear Dunes was truly a joy

for MyNorth Media (publishers of Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Maga-

zine and MyNorth.com). We thank the staff of the Sleeping Bear Dunes

National Lakeshore for helping to make the book a beautiful tribute to

a most beautiful place.

Working closely with homeowners Matt and Courtney Fruge,

kitchen designer Carolyn Andrews oversaw the transformation of a

90s-era, bright blue and white kitchen into a sophisticated, contempo -

rary space for cooking, dining and entertaining. Step one was removing

two walls to meld the once-cloistered kitchen into one large, wonderful

great room.

Within the large room, Carolyn helped the Fruges lay out a highly

efficient kitchen that revolves around a generous island equipped with

a cooktop, prep sink and seating. Catalina-style white beadboard cabi -

netry adds a cottagey touch. Ceiling-mounted cabinets over the island

are outfitted with glass doors on each side to allow easy access to serv-

ing pieces that are worthy of being displayed under glass!

Dark-stained maple floors make a handsome contrast to the white

cabinets, and stainless appliances create a streamlined look. In a final

touch, Matt faced the island base in the same stone he’d used on the

fireplace that sits across the room. Beyond creating balance in the

room, Matt points out that the stone is durable enough to withstand

any amount of careless kicking

his two young sons might dish

out over the years.

Like any renovation project, this

one had its wrinkles, but Matt says

that Carolyn was more than up to

the job. “It was a pleasure to work

with Carolyn,” he says. “Problems

came up, but she was quick to

solve them.”

human experiences.”

Elk Rapids Northville

Northern Home & Cottage OCT|NOV 2013 NHC29

Once again, kitchen designer Sandra Bargiel demonstrates her skill

for blending styles and materials to create kitchens that are paragons

of good taste. In this case, homeowners Madelyn and Bill Ryan wanted

a kitchen that is as at home staging elegant Saturday evening cocktail

or dinner parties in their Old Mission Peninsula home, as it is hosting

quiet breakfasts for just the two of them. To that end, Bargiel fused the

Neoclassical style that defines the home’s other rooms with contempo-

rary materials for an ideal balance of sophisticated and intimate.

The backdrop of this kitchen is contemporary white cabinetry turned

out with classic details, such as two-step crown molding and furniturelike

bases. Black granite countertops are another contemporary touch—one

that is balanced by the warmth of a chestnut floor. An iroko table-height

counter performs butler service for elegant parties as well as a spot to

sip coffee for two. Bargiel chose the woods for their warm brownish cast

instead of the reddish tones of other hardwoods.

The earthiness of a seagrass limestone backsplash is the foil for a sophis-

ticated built-in wine bar situated between the kitchen and the living area.

The outcome more than met the Ryans’ expectations. “We love coming

home to this space—Sandra was the designer who actually listened to what

we wanted and provided it down to the last detail,” Madelyn says.

30 MyNorth.com

When Kirsten Pappas decided to refit the 1990s kitchen in her

century-old church-turned-home, she had three directives for kitchen

designer Sandra Bargiel of Bay Cabinetry & Design Studio: Make it

fun, make it different and make it comfortable.

Sandra knew she could do all that—and that she could bring the

bold colors that Kirsten uses in the rest of the home into the kitchen.

Ah, but Job One? To reflow the large but inefficient kitchen area and

rip out the homely oak cabinets. The heart of Sandra’s new plan is

a generous island that combines a black granite counter top with a

stainless prep counter. “I love the flow,” Kirsten says. “It allows for

several chefs preparing food at several work stations, as well as a nice

social setting for those who prefer to sit and relax.”

Sandra selected contemporary high-gloss, acrylic-wrap, black

cabinets—a choice that simultaneously anchors the kitchen’s bright

lime and turquoise wall colors and acts as a reflector for them. Five of

the cabinets are lift-up style, a selection Sandra made for their ease of

access and their hip Euro look.

Slate-colored ceramic tile and glass pendant lights round out this

energetic room that can han -

dle everything from entertain-

ing to the comings and goings

of a house full of teenagers.

BAC Design Group’s senior designer, Marty Rhein, collaborated

with artisans and craftsmen to blend the homeowners’ love for con-

temporary and traditional style into one cohesively classic kitchen in

this hilltop home with stunning views of Grand Traverse Bay.

Classic details in the semi-custom cabinets consist of inset and

full-overlay style construction, as well as countertops fabricated with

both quartz and granite materials. Stainless steel appliances, satin-

nickel plumbing fixtures and pewter hardware combine to lend a

polished finish. The off-white painted and pewter-glazed outer cabi-

nets complement the custom gray-stained island base, as do perim-

eter warm gray quartz countertops. The island’s granite top unifies

the home’s neutral tones into one cohesive visual theme. A modern

pattern of slate and glass tile in the backsplash echoes the slate floor-

ing in the beautiful four-season room just off the kitchen. The overall

neutral-toned finishes are contemporary, yet classic and successfully

bring the outdoors in.

36 MyNorth.com

This Angela Goodall–designed kitchen in a new Long Lake Peninsula

home feels as deliciously comforting as a hot cross bun. Cream cabine-

try in two tones, inset doors and deep crown molding combine for tra -

ditional tastefulness, while a built-in cherry hutch and a cherry island-

base spice the soft golds and toasted tones (think fresh from the oven

baked goods!) of porcelain floor tile and typhoon Bordeaux granite.

Homeowner Judy McEvoy displays her collectables in the hutch

as well as on a custom mantel set into the range hood. A backsplash

that combines subway tiles and reflective bits of tin enhances the

feel that the hood/mantel is the hearth of the kitchen.

While the island (embellished with traditional, elegant table legs)

invites seating, the kitchen is made for cooking—a fact borne out in

the white-enamel apron sink with its gooseneck faucet and the pot

filler that hovers over the range. Judy and her husband, Steve

Zavodny, love baking as well as cooking, so Goodall opened up the

pantry entrance to make room for a baking nook complete with a

second oven. The area is such a pleasant place for a baker/sous chef,

it helps keep both wife and husband in the kitchen—happily!

Homeowner Patty Ray tells us that she happily plays sous chef to

her loves-to-cook husband Scott. “But we both absolutely love our

kitchen,” she adds. “It is the soul of our home.”

Kitchen designer Marty Rhein’s recipe for this stunning kitchen, in

a Craftsman-style walkout set above Lake Michigan’s Good Harbor

Bay, relies on the drama of contrasting shades of dark and light.

Handsome Manchurian rustic walnut floors and black granite coun-

tertops present potent foil to a flood of whitewashed surfaces that

include the cupboards, wainscoting and V-groove ceiling.

Handsome architectural details manifested in custom trim and

inset cabinetry lend the room a classic air. But Patty’s favorite part just

may be what you don’t see: a large hidden pantry (with a secret access

door) that adds functionality-plus. “I love, love, love it,” she says, adding

that her favorite part of the pantry is a tablecloth rack that was Marty’s

design solution for wall space that couldn’t be used for shelving.

The floor plan includes a spacious island that Patty says allows sev-

eral people to cook at the same time and is also a great spot for laying

out a buffet or working on a craft project. Factor in the adjacent four-

season porch, and it is no surprise that the kitchen is the shining soul

of this home.

Working with the homeowners, kitchen designer Kristen Myers

used as her design cue the stunning expanse of Sleeping Bear Bay

shoreline out the window of this new home. Her first design choice

was a tawny-colored ash floor that set the tone for maple cabinetry

stained in oregano and glazed in a nickel shade: Think sand dunes

covered in beach grass and driftwood.

Beyond inset doors, the cabinetry is purposely simple to evoke the

feeling of a rustic beach or farmhouse. Likewise, the ample central

island, stained to match the cabinetry, is clad in V-groove panels that

echo old beadboard. Kristen softened the effect of the stainless hood

by topping it with a maple valance, further accentuating the kitchen’s

rustic feel.

The island, like the perimeter counters, is topped in bianco

Romano granite with its naturally dynamic pattern of steely gray and

blue veins waving across a creamy background. Syzygy glazed tiles

in watery shades, set into the stone-colored, hand-glazed subway

tile behind the range, pay more homage to the Lake Michigan view

outside the door.

Two dishwashers, a double oven and top-performing appliances

make entertaining in this kitchen as easy as a lake breeze.

With seven grandbabies (and their parents) frequent visitors to her

Glen Lake home, Nancy Killen was ready for a kitchen update. On her

wish list: a new 48-inch Wolf range, more counter space (staging area

for bottles, formula and snacks!) and more storage space.

There was also the matter of some outdated painted cabinetry that

needed a new look. But the Killens did love the timeless look of wood—

as played out in their kitchen in a hickory floor, knotty pine paneling,

beadboard ceiling and wood cabinets—so Goodall encouraged them to

preserve all of that while also adding updated touches.

The new kitchen sports handsome cherry cabinetry with inset doors,

a buttercream-finished island base and a Joshua Tree–green hutch

(bottles, formula and snacks!). New chocolatey brown petra imperial

granite countertops provide a yummy touch, as does the caramelly via

appia granite snack-bar wing Goodall designed on to the island.

Nancy got her Wolf range, too, and more. Goodall clad the hood in

stack stone with a cherry base, warming the space by evoking the sen -

sibility of a hearth. Handsome, cozy and extremely functional, the

Killen kitchen is ready for whatever seven grandkids dish out.
