The Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre was completed in September and will be functioning from November 17. It is the result of collaboration between Northland DHB and the community, led by The Northland Community Foundation.

Based at Whangarei Hospital, the purpose-built building replaced the existing cramped and inadequate cancer treatment facilities housed in the hospital.

“We have been excitedly watching the building progress from our window all year and the end result is just great,” says Oncology clinical nurse manager Maggie Prentice. “There is so much more space and patients are also looking forward to the move.”

She says over 15 staff will be based at the unit with others coming and going.

Named after the prominent Whangarei businessman and philanthropist, the Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre, is the result of a vision driven by Jack Broome and Karen Roach, which became Project Promise.

Fundraising events and activities have raised over $3 million towards the $5 million project and Northland DHB funded the remaining $2 million.

The Carney family trust also made a generous donation and Mr Carney’s widow, Mary, says the end result is a great achievement by the people of Northland who have contributed in many ways.

“This Unit will benefit Northland families with regards to treatment. I am very pleased to be part of this project and I know Jim would have been very enthusiastic about it too.”

NCF chairman Richard Ayton says, despite hitting a rough patch halfway during fundraising, he was pleased to announce the conclusion of a successful campaign.

“It’s pleasing to see the end result of everyone’s hard work.”

Northland DHB chief executive Nick Chamberlain says hundreds of cancer patients will benefit from thousands of treatments at the new centre each year.

“The community support has been astounding and I couldn’t help getting swept up in the energy and positivity of this project myself. There are so many people to thank — every contribution of time, money, fundraising, goods and services is gratefully and thankfully acknowledged.”

Promise to Northland fulfi lled

Raising three million in three years to build a local cancer treatment unit sounded nigh on impossible when first suggested but Northland has done it.

High beef prices good for kiwi farmersHigh international beef prices are an almost perfect storm for kiwi producers, according to Federated Farmers.

The organisation’s Beef and Fibre chairman Rick Powdrell says droughts in United States and Australia have decimated herd numbers and it may take years for stock levels to recover.

The shortage of available stock is expected to take years to fix, meaning the current high prices are likely to be around for a significant period.

“You can almost call it a perfect storm,” says Mr Powdrell. “Our members are pretty buoyant about it.”

The American droughts from 2010 to 2012 forced producers to cut stock numbers to cope with a reduced amount of feed. But consumer demand for the product remained high, meaning prices rose in the world’s largest beef market when production was low. That opened up opportunities

by Colin Patterson

for New Zealand exporters. It also means less competition for Kiwi producers in lucrative Asian markets, such as China.

That all happened when conditions in New Zealand — in most areas at least — remained reasonably good.

Mr Powdrell says current prices are unlikely to be a flash in the pan. “The long-term outlook is that it will take time for cattle numbers to rebuild. That would be the hope.

“All the indicators are that prices should remain high for the foreseeable future.”

Despite the public perception, Mr Powdrell says beef farmers are not rolling in money. “A lot of them are repaying debt. They’ve been through some pretty tough times. They’re also doing some repairs, maintenance and plant upgrades. They’re all things they can’t do when prices are low.” Beef and Fibre chairman Rick Powdrell

He then went to Massey University where he studied horticulture and business management. While

there he met with wife Rebecca, who is now a qualified veterinarian.

After finishing their studies they moved to Auckland. But in 2011 Patrick decided he needed a change.

So in partnership with parents Dermott and Linzi he bought the 17.5ha Ararimu Orchard in Maungatapere, about 12km west of Whangarei. The trio along with Rebecca moved north and started making something of their new acquisition.

“It was already planted in kiwi fruit and avocados,” says Patrick. He says he knew a little about kiwi fruit from his days in Hawke’s Bay but nothing about avocados.

“Having already been involved in business certainly helped,” says Patrick.

KIWI FRUIT AND AVOCADORECIPE FOR SUCCESS

BY COLIN PATTERSON

After five years working in an Auckland office Patrick Malley decided he’d had enough. He missed the fresh air of his family’s Hawke’s Bay apple orchard where he had grown up.

”We’re successful because we treat what we do as a business, not a lifestyle.”

His studies in horticulture and his parent’s background in orcharding meant they quickly got up to speed on the requirements of growing kiwi fruit and avocados. “We’re really focussed on doing things at the right time and the right place.”

Just three years after taking over Ararimu Farm the Malleys now run a business employing 40 staff, including 30 full-timers. They’ve also established a successful agricultural contracting business to provide work for their staff during the off-season.

Patrick Malley and his wife Rebecca left their Auckland corporate lifestyle to grow avocados and

kiwi fruit at Maungatapere near Whangarei

Patrick is also working to improve his skills and the way he runs his business. He entered and won the Horticulture New Zealand Young Grower of the Year award for Bay of Plenty (there was no competition in Northland).

Earlier this year Patrick and Rebecca entered the 2014 Northland Ballance Farm Environment Awards. “As we are fairly new to the horticultural industry we are always looking for ways to learn and to meet new people, so being involved in the awards seemed like a really good way to do both these things.”

Although they missed out on the big award, the Malleys were pleasantly surprised to win three category awards. One of them was the Massey University Innovation Award. This award recognises farmers and farming families who develop or embrace new technologies and systems, and have an established record of advancing farm or orchard practices for improved results.

The judges praised the ‘unparalleled level of innovation across the whole orchard’ and made special mention of the family’s staff management philosophy. Staff at Ararimu are paid a living wage and are encouraged to undertake additional

training in horticulture. Patrick says they entered the awards because they were a yardstick. “We want to see where we can improve. And what we can do better.”

He says one of the best things about the awards was meeting fellow competitors, finding out what they are doing and exchanging ideas. “All competitors were at the top of their game. But I was happy with what we are doing.”

Ararimu Farm uses compost and seaweed as a fertiliser and works to reduce runoff from the land. “We like to consider we are reasonably good environmental managers.”

Patrick says entering the awards was definitely worthwhile and he wants to encourage others to do so. “Almost all farmers and horticulturalists are sympathetic to the environment. There’s a lot of stuff that people are doing that will put them in good stead for this competition.”

Back on the farm, the Malley team are hard at work for another growing season. Recently they put covers over their entire kiwi fruit crop to protect it against PSA. “Whangarei currently doesn’t have PSA. The region is focussed on doing everything we can to prevent it getting here.”

The large steel span shed near Kerikeri houses many machines rare or iconic to Northland

agriculture. Stationary engines and memorabilia from the kauri days are also displayed.

The family farm was north east of Dargaville near the Wairoa River. Young Milton worked a double shift with his father breaking in 900 acres of ti tree and rushes using a David Brown 30 TD Crawler Tractor. His father bought it in Dargaville in the 1960s and was an early advocate. The Auckland Weekly News featured the machine’s demonstration

day where Randell senior recommended the 30 TD’s ‘6 aside Hooper giant discs and effective 9ft dozer blade’. Milton has since found that very same machine and restored it, complete with locally made blade, to become part of the collection in memory of his father.

Travelling much further afield, the collection’s Caterpillar 15 Crawler tractor recalls past polar explorations. Admiral Byrd took it to Antarctica to pull sledges in 1929 and in 1933. The blade was especially designed to push snow and the intake manifold has unique brass fittings to help it start in extreme

weather. The machine is currently undergoing restoration.

Another Cat is one of the biggest on display, the fully restored D8. Milton used it for many years working in a quarry at Tokatoka. The D8 is considered part of New Zealand earthmoving history and is justifiably included in the collection.

Alongside these, Milton has obtained three uncommon light agricultural crawler tractors — the International Harvester TD5, the Massey Ferguson Crawler tractor 135 and the David Brown TD 40. Both the International Harvester

TD5 and the Massey Ferguson 135 have the three-point linkage system, making them very adaptable machines. The English made David Brown TD 40 is rare since only a few were ever manufactured.

Bulldozers of the collection include the early Komatsu D50-11 used on a Taipa farm and in running order after being resurrected in 1964. Also noteworthy is an American made Cletrac (1932) with a Hercules engine.

The wheel tractors include some less seen machines, such as the Irish made Fordson (c1927) with solid rubber

Principal sponsors of Northland’s Electricity Rescue Helicopter Service, Northpower and Top Energy, are challenging Northlanders to dig deep to support their locally owned air ambulance service. The two electricity companies will together contribute a total of $150,000 to this year’s fundraising campaign, which is officially underway. It will run until late November.Top Energy CEO Russell Shaw says he is proud to still be supporting the service.“We have had our share of employees and their families saved by this service and I am constantly hearing from people in the community who have been helped by it,” says Mr Shaw.Mark Gatland, Northpower’s CEO, says every cent helps in the fundraising appeal.“Everyone involved in and around this service – from the paramedics to the volunteers, pilots, office staff and local authorities – is so committed to helping others. The least we can do is return that support.”This year’s campaign is again being supported by TVNZ’s Simon Dallow, along with former Black Cap Mark Richardson and many others.General Manager of the Northland Emergency Services Trust, Vanessa Furze, says the organisation is always grateful for the support Northland’s community gives it.“But we are also trying to get our message wider because we are so busy through the summer months due to the influx of tourists from outside the region. For that reason, we ask that those holidaying in the North also help us,” says Mrs Furze.“Since 1988, we have flown close to 17,000 flights and we are becoming busier by the year as our population increases, so we need ongoing donations.”People can donate to the 2014 Electricity Rescue Helicopter Appeal in three ways:• Return your Freepost official

donation envelope sent out to all Northland homes

• Donate at any Northland ASB Branch

• Internet banking donation to ERH Appeal: ASB - 12 3106 0046000 00.

tyres which served an Auckland County Council. It is kerosene petrol start and is complete with a rear winch — a unique machine. Milton went to Ashburton for the 6cyl 1944 Fordson, used for many years on wheat and cropping. There’s also a rare David Brown 2D garden tractor with mid-mounted application for using a range of implements.

Dominating the stationary engines is the 1907 Hornsby-Akroyd horizontal single cylinder engine used at Toia’s timber mill at Okaihau — it’s one of few still in working order.

“MOTAT people came up to look at it and it took four of us to turn it over,” says Milton. It was hand started using a spin fly wheel. The engine can run on alternative fuels such as waste or vegetable oils. The 1917 3hp Kauri is another engine, New Zealand made, with a single cylinder oil motor that runs on petrol and has a mounted preheating combustible chamber.

The Kauri also requires a blow torch to start it. Broadening the collection are lathes, earlier farm life items such as crank handle telephones, and a replica kauri diggers’ shanty, wash board and barber’s strop included! There are also vintage bottles, many recovered by Milton when digging drains on his reclaimed farmland where they had been tossed overboard from the kauri schooners.

LOOKINGBACK ON A

DATING BACK TO THE LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY, THE WHANGAREI AGRICULTURAL & PASTORAL SOCIETY BOASTS A PROUD HISTORY.

BY JOANNE SPEECHLY

SOCIAL ICON

During its time, the society has been known by several names but the one thing that has

remained consistent is its mission to promote and support the rural sector. With a vision to be the best A&P Society in New Zealand, the show remains the largest of its kind north of Auckland.

Records suggest that the Whangarei Agricultural & Pastoral Society has its origins in the Whangarei Farmers Club which was founded in the 1870s, and ran a series of market days loosely based on English cattle fairs. In 1899, it became the Whangarei

Pastoral & Agricultural Association, then the following year, ‘pastoral’ and ‘agricultural’ were switched around. Finally, in 1902, it became known as it is today.

The club’s early agricultural shows were held at John Rust’s saleyards, now 23 Rust Ave at the heart of Whangarei city, and then in Eugene Cafler’s paddock, where the Bank of New Zealand stands today. In later year’s, annual exhibitions were held at Kensington Park.

The 1902 name change meant that the society could become incorporated under the A&P Societies Act, which

would allow it to raise loans to purchase farmland and build a grandstand. The chosen piece of farmland was Kensington Park, as it had already become the town’s preferred racetrack, sportsfield and showground, so the society made the acquisition and entered into a tenancy agreement with the racing club. In Reminiscences of Early Whangarei published in 1936, Alexander Rust remembers agricultural shows and auctions at Rust’s saleyard and later, shows in Cafler’s paddock, which was also home to a ‘pugnacious’ and territorial ram and his flock and a donkey. Rust also recalls the existence of ‘Caledonian games, wrestling, quoits and other sidelines to attract the non-pastoral members of the community’.

In 1897, the show’s agricultural classes were small but of good quality and included horses, both draught and

Largest Selection of Jars & Bottles in NZFarmers markets are springing up across

the country, and with them has come a revival in bottling of fruits and vegetables.

Arthur Holmes Ltd is a family firm which this year celebrates 104 years in business, wholesalers of New Zealand’s largest range of glass and plastic jars and bottles for food, oil, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, scientific, herbal and homeopathic businesses, and all types of cottage industries.

“We specialise in supplying small quantities of quality jars and bottles and their respective closures, says managing director, Rick Holmes.

“Additional closures can be ordered

individually, and there’s no minimum purchase requirement.

“Preserving jars and bottles are our mainstay and these have had a marked increase in sales in recent years. Many of our customers now sell in the frequent weekend farmers’ markets.

“Today preserving is so much easier. Gone are the days of seals and bands. The modern cap now has a built-in rubber compound which when hot filled creates a vacuum once it has cooled, the twist finish allows the cap to be opened by braking the vacuum.”

Arthur Holmes Ltd supplies over 20,000 customers.

blood stock, male and female riders, Jersey and Shorthorn cattle, sheep, poultry and pigs. Indoor exhibits included dairy, baking, ham and bacon, flowers and fancy work.

In 1916, a winter show was introduced to complement the summer show and its popularity grew rapidly.

The Ham and Bacon Raffle was particularly successful and a popular pastime were the quiz shows, run by the Four Square grocery chain. After nearly 80 years, the Winter Show was put into recess in 1995.

Almost a century and a half on, the Whangarei A&P show is still the jewel in Northland’s agricultural and entertainment crown and the countdown for this year’s summer show has begun. To be held over two days, on December 6 and 7, at Barge Showgrounds, Maunu Road, Whangarei, it continues to build

on its long and successful reputation of bringing the country to town.

Entries for the livestock and equestrian competitions are now open and trade sites are quickly being snapped up by exhibitors wanting to showcase their products and services.

There will also be plenty of opportunities to learn more about what happens in the rural sector — popular attractions include shearing, spinning and weaving displays and milking demonstrations with the cuddly Suzie Moo.

Traditional A&P Show favourites, including the children’s Big Dig, carnival and vintage tractor rides, candy floss and hot dogs, complete the festivities

Trade exhibitor information and show schedules are available online at www.summershow.co.nz.

A&P Shows in recent times would not be complete without the ever popular carnival rides, side show attractions and candy oss!

A selection of equestrian events will be held on Friday, December 5.

The society is a not for profit organisation and is registered as a Charitable Trust and incorporated under the Agricultural and Pastoral Societies Act.

The Society is run by a board and has a strong membership base. New members are always welcome.

Health for All LifeProtoplasm is a living substance that fi lls the cells of microbes, plants, animals and humans containing all the compounds of life in a mixture of such minute components that it has defi ed analysis.

The cycle of life is really the story of protoplasm as it goes from microbes to all life above the soil, then back into the soil.

What matters is that the food eaten carries the protoplasm of the microbes grown with a natural balance of minerals.

The purpose of eating food is to recreate a population of soil micro-organisms in the intestines. Protoplasm from the microbes can then be absorbed into the blood. All plants, animals and humans live on protoplasm and microbes are the only living thing that can make protoplasm, so to operate at the top level you need micro-organisms in your soil.

One of the most benefi cial fertilisers for the soil and for the microbes is rock-dust. Agrissentials

are the pioneers of New Zealand volcanic rock dust which is ground down to fl our and blended with our live living liquid fertiliser Oceans 100, together with other BioGro certifi ed ingredients culminating in our Rok Solid full spectrum multi-mineral, microbial rich fertiliser. Within 48 hours this beautiful brew heats up to 60 degrees centigrade, composting all ingredients into one magical mix, ready to bring life, minerals and microbes to the soil.

Now, if you want to see and experience the heat, the wonderful aroma and the live nature of our Rok Solid environmentally friendly fertilisers you are more than welcome to witness this at our South Island plant (Mosgiel) contact Darryn Graves on 027 288 0140 or our North Island

plant (Te Kauwhata) contact Peter Baldero on 021 738 602. Agrissentials fertilisers are designed to re-mineralise the soil and pack the soil with micro-organisms and worms, satisfying two parts of the equation to grow plants and pasture (the other two parts being water and sunlight). Get these four essentials — minerals, microbes, moisture and sunlight, in the right amounts and growth will fl ourish.

The up and coming new technology is mans co-operative progression with nature. Nature has the capacity to yield all manner of farm produce far beyond our present expectations, disease and pest free and perfectly mineralised.

Everything emits energy, whether it is soil, water, air, chemicals or minerals. What makes each element different is the pattern of frequency at which it resonates. Some patterns and frequencies are detrimental to biological life and some are benefi cial. The new technology is about these energies and how we can best benefi t from them. With the help of science we will eventually be able to tune into these energies which will benefi t both quality and increased production, that’s what farming is all about.

It’s time to leave the chemical age and begin working with nature and the natural capital that she provides for all life. The change to Agrissentials system of working with nature is very minimal, but hugely benefi cial for you, your family, your farm and your environment.

Agrissentials are committed to healthy communities: so much so that in November for every tonne of Rok Solid or 200L of Oceans 100 you buy, not only will you will be making your soil healthy but Agrissentials will donate a further $3 to Movember, supporting men’s health. Save time and money with JackJawAn innovative product used by thousands of farmers, local authorities and contractors across the world is now available in New Zealand.

It’s the JackJaw range of peg and post extractors which is unique because of its patented design. The patented jaw and lever mechanism allows you to pull stakes and posts straight up out of the ground without bending them, keeping your expensive stakes straight for hundreds of repeated uses. Being a vertical lift, it doesn’t bend or damage

the pegs or posts. Traditional products like the popular steel star pickets have become expensive, so it makes sense to reuse old posts. The JackJaw helps you do that, saving farmers, contractors and property owners money because they no longer have to order new posts and throw out ones that would otherwise be damaged.

You don’t need to take our word for it. Hear what our customers have to say: “The Jackjaw removed four out of the five earth rods. We suspect the fifth one was attached to concrete.” Chris Higgins, Electrician.

“We trialled a Jackjaw on the Cambridge Bypass project on 36 waratahs. We started two crews — one at one end — one with our old extractor and the other with the JackJaw. When they met, it was JackJaw 30 — other model six. The guys with a JackJaw hadn’t built up a sweat. We bought it on the spot.” Andy Searancke, HEB Superintendent Cambridge Bypass.

“The JackJaws are becoming popular with our customers. Once they have used one, many have ordered multiple Jackjaws,” distributor Paul Herbison says.

Mowing in greener pasturesby Andy Bryenton

The days of pushing a mechanical rotary mower across acres of verdant lawn are far behind us — replacing the clack and clatter of blades with the purr of horsepower on any given Sunday.

And it’s quite an arms race out there, with lawn-care engineers vying to create the perfect machine to tackle the maintenance of even the wildest back yard.

In rural New Zealand, larger lawns (which quite often blend seamlessly into the acreage reserved for livestock) have often meant that a push mower was never enough — like TV’s Hank Hill, men of the land have developed an abiding respect for the convenience of the ride-on mower. Technology in this field has proceeded apace with developments in quad bikes, utes, tractors and other vital tools often lumped together under the unfair classification of ‘big boy’s toys’ — we know for certain that machines like the new Victa NXT lawn tractor are vital time saving, back-ache-reducing godsends.

Victa have been crafting mowers for Kiwi lawns for over five decades, and though they began in New South Wales, they have been embraced on this side of the Tasman for their powerful, no-nonsense approach to mower design. The NXT series is no exception, drawing on Victa’s alliance with parent company Briggs and Stratton to put more power at the driver’s command. That power comes from a Briggs and Stratton professional series flat v-twin — an engine with a similar layout to that found in a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Here, the two cylinders are laid out horizontally, and produce an ample 23 horsepower, driving a wide, 1.17 metre triple bladed cutting deck.

This means less passes to cut the average lawn down to size, but Victa’s engineers haven’t stopped with simply beefing up the NXT’s grunt. As very few lawns are flat, cricket-pitch expanses of easily tamed ryegrass, the NXT has been designed with stability and nimble turning in mind, enabling whoever is in command to handle this 263 kilogram

lawn tractor as deftly as a safety razor for edging and nipping around trees.

To enable this, the NXT has a tiny 35cm turning radius, and comes equipped with cruise control for those back-and-forth switchbacks. And, for that professional looking finish, it will cut down to a militarily precise 3.8cm, evenly across the yard. With Spring well and truly here, many folks are

looking at the riot of verdancy out the window with growing trepidation. The good news is, like modern utes, ATVs and other serious farming equipment, the ride-on mower is keeping pace with technology, offering better ride comfort

and ergonomics to match a boost in power and reliability. So it’s also worth mentioning that the NXT comes with another must-have automotive feature — a conveniently placed cup holder, for some well-earned refreshment as you survey a neat and tidy lawn.

Auckland drivers need tyres that work in the traffic, farmers need tyres that just work.need tyres that just work.

Choosing the right tyre saves you money: Don’t settle for original tyres that come Don’t settle for original tyres that come

already fitted to your vehicle. These are made to the vehicle manufacturer’s price and may result in a compromise on the tyre performance and life.

Farmers tackling rural terrain need a tough tyre that offers more traction, better handling and increased puncture resistance.

The first advantage most drivers mention after replacing the original tyres to Mickey Thompson Tires is the noticeable improvement in handling.

Mickey Thompson Tires have been making tyres in the USA for more than 50 years. If you want a tyre that stands up to everything you can throw at it, choose Mickey Thompson Tires.

When purchasing a new set of tyres ask for: • Deeper treads for more traction and

increased value for money. • Stronger tyres that carry higher loads and

offer increased puncture resistance.Mickey Thompson’s have:

Deeper tread depths, multiple patterns for every application, self cleaning designs and a bigger footprint for traction. If you get punctures, then Mickey Thompson Tires have stronger casings and wider steel belts for increased puncture resistance.

A D V E RT O R I A L

by Rachel Sorley, Environmental Fertilisers

On occasion, while townie kids were at kindergarten, I could be found down the back of the farm, holding up the bottle of a glucose drip into a sick cow.

Forcing grass to grow when it is normally dormant or slow growing through applying synthetic nitrogen fertiliser means that other nutrients (such as phosphorus and calcium) are used up faster than they would normally be throughout the year and the soil is not able to replenish what the plant needs from natural processes such as the weathering of rocks in the soil.

Results from the Reams Soil Test show time and again, that soils are low in calcium, phosphorus, humus — and this season, nitrate and ammonium-N (the result of all that rain over winter). So to get your clover growing this season (to replenish the soils nitrogen naturally), give the soil a boost with some fi nely ground calcium called EF Nano Cal (it also has the bonus of trace minerals and sugars to feed your soil biology).

Vets were called to the farm only in dire circumstances when head scratching and Dad’s animal health knowledge had been exhausted.

The role of vets on farm has changed signifi cantly since then, with vets much more actively involved with growing healthy productive animals over the lifetime of an animal rather than treating sick ones.

Recently I met a team of vets working as intermediaries between farmers and graziers for growing out young stock. While graziers feed the animals, the vet team tightly monitors their growth by weight gain, administers health treatments that will likely have the best long-term outcomes, and reports on feed recommendations for animals which are underperforming and need topping up. For them it’s about putting

the work in more at the beginning than the end and adding value over the animal’s entire lifetime. It’s more rewarding for the vet and the farmer.

This move towards preventative medicine and ‘whole-of-life’ care is based on the science that the environment to which young stock are exposed (especially feed and treatment) will have long-term impacts as they mature and throughout their lifetime. Benefi ts of a healthy start to life include resilience to disease, increased production, life expectancy and fertility.

Managing weight at critical times is a big part of putting the work in at the beginning rather than the end. With any luck this generation of kids will remember raising calves to target weights not raising hip-lifters.

If we are going to have another dry summer (I hope not), then now is the time to start applying EF Humus Builder. Humus helps store water in the soil so that it is available during the dry summer months.

Focus on Ef uentDealing with farm discharge

The Farm Dairy Effluent (FDE) monitoring programme is a council’s single largest compliance monitoring programme, accounting for almost 25 per cent of the total number of activities monitored on the New Zealand farming scene, and the Northland Regional Council is no exception.

promoting and enforcing compliance with standards set in resource consents and regional plan rules.

FDE systems are divided into consented (MCO) or non-consented (MNC) types. Non-consented systems — currently approximately 260 farms — are visually inspected and graded depending on compliance with the criteria for ‘permitted activities’ in the RWSP.

Consented systems — currently approximately 700 farms — are assessed against individual consent conditions and rules in the Regional Water and Soil Plan (RWSP).

All farm discharges are categorised as either fully compliant, minor non-compliant or significantly non-compliant.

All Northland farms are inspected at least once per season. Follow-up inspections are also made to all farms found to have significantly non-compliant discharges.

The FDE programme is fully documented in the Farm Dairy Effluent

Procedures Manual and is subject to both internal and external quality audits. The aim of the programme is to monitor the effects of the approximately 13,000m3 of farm dairy effluent produced daily during the milking season, and to protect water quality by

Under the NRC: • All farms are monitored every year between August and December (this is the period of peak effluent loadings).

• All visits are made non-notified. • Systems are checked for compliance with individual resource consent conditions and/or against the permitted activity rules.

• Wherever there is a discharge to water, samples are taken. These are tested for pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, faecal coliforms and NH4.

• A ‘whole of farm’ approach is taken — where any non-compliance with the rules for animal effluent or silage are found on farm — these are included in the statistics.

Youth looksat water quality

Farm effluent is at the centre of most concerns about the quality of Northland waterways, and it’s been the focus of 32 students attending the recent Northland Regional Council Youth Summit.

The students from throughout Northland gathered in Whangarei at the Onerahi Yacht Club where they looked at land based run-off and its effects on coastal environmental issues, along with other forms of waterway degradation, and what they could do to make a difference.

The day-long workshop brought together Year Seven and Eight students from 11 Northland schools, from Kaingaroa near Kaitaia, to Ruawai in the south.

They explored ways in which young people could play an active role in the future sustainable management of Northland’s coast and the catchments feeding it.

The students developed action plans to help sort local sustainable management issues. These included beach access in Opononi, controlling

Kaipara Harbour fish pests to improve water quality, fish dumping on Tokerau Beach, rubbish cleanups on the Tutukaka coast and managing wastewater, stormwater and runoff issues in Whangarei Harbour.

Northland Regional Council chairman Bill Shepherd says it was encouraging to see Northland students taking an active interest in protecting and preserving their local marine environment.

“The work of these students makes a real contribution to the health of Northland’s estuaries, harbours and coastlines. That’s important for all Northlanders,” he said.

The students’ efforts will contribute to the health of a number of Northland harbours including Bay of Islands, Hokianga, Whangarei and Kaipara, along with Ngunguru Estuary and the Doubtless Bay and Tutukaka coast catchments.

When the going gets tough these summer forages will help keep you going

A D V E RT O R I A L

With NIWA forecasting the high likelihood of yet another summer drought, farmers will need to plan carefully to avoid feed shortages during the fi rst quarter of 2015.

Pacifi c Seeds Territory Manager, Barry Smallridge, said the company’s range of summer forages had been developed to provide farmers with an extremely cost effective feed solution during these challenging periods.

“When planted and managed correctly they are very tolerant to drought conditions,” he said. The range includes two Brown Mid Rib varieties — BMR Rocket

(early fl owering) and BMR Octane, which is a later fl owering option — as well as Sprint and Pearler, all of which have received outstanding endorsement from growers during recent seasons.

Mr Smallridge said as well as being suitable for direct drilling, they can be used for green feed or the production of hay (Sprint preferred option), baleage (Sprint and

Pearler preferred options) and pit silage (BMR Octane preferred option). “These different varieties allow us to provide farmers with a hybrid option that’s best suited to their specifi c regional and stock requirements,” he said.

Feed analysis of Pacifi c Seeds BMR hybrids have shown a 3–6 per cent advantage over non-BMR hybrids, translating into an extra 0.3–0.7 MJ/kg.

Dargaville farmer Doug Butcher grew BMR Rocket on his property last season and was amazed at both the growth rate and the feed quality the hybrid delivered.

“During last season’s drought it was the only thing we had to keep us going,” he said.

“We planted it during November and took the fi rst cut at about 55 days, followed by another four cuts after that.

“It was easy to plant and manage, and when we started the cows on it during January it was the only green thing on the property.”

Sprint is an extremely palatable hybrid that can be available for grazing or cutting in less than 50 days.

Rapid regrowth allows for subsequent grazing/cutting within around 30 days.

It has fi ne stems with prolifi c tillering and provides greater fl exibility than summer brassicas.

Don Randle, who took 134 bales of Sprint off just 4.3 hectares was very impressed with its performance.

“The crop was bloody marvellous, feed quality was great and the cows loved it.”

Pearler is a high protein, highly digestible millet type that can be grazed early without any prussic acid worries.

It is easy to manage and can be grazed when it reaches Red Band gumboot height.

“Pearler fi ts really well into our forage range and it can generate similar livestock productivity during summer to what can be achieved with oats during winter,” Mr Smallridge said.

Kaipara Harbour showcase in Novemberby the Land Management Team, Northland Regional Council

In mid-November, the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group is hosting a two-day event to showcase and celebrate our special and unique taonga, the Kaipara Harbour.

This event provides an opportunity for those with an interest in the harbour or its catchment to get together with scientists, local hapu and a range of community groups to hear about what has been happening in the area and to share ideas about future efforts.

With major roads only touching on the upper corners of the harbour, the size and the grandeur of the Kaipara remains unappreciated by many, despite the fact that 33 per cent of Northland drains into the harbour.

With a catchment that extends from Towai in the north, and comes close to touching both east and west coasts, the size of the catchment matches its diversity in terms of soil types, landforms and land uses. It includes the rugged forest areas of Tutamoe, Tangihua and parts of the Russell forest, which contain the headwaters of many of the streams that eventually flow into the Kaipara.

The rain that falls on the pine forests at Mangakahia, the dairy farms on the Hikurangi Swamp, the sheep and beef farms at Hakaru and the avocado

orchards at Whatatiri all flows into the Kaipara Harbour, carrying with it anything it has picked up along the way.

The Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group came into being 10 years ago after Ngati Whatua raised concerns around the condition of the harbour. Issues such as sedimentation, nutrient enrichment, decline in fisheries and bacterial contamination are best addressed through an integrated catchment approach.

The partnership now not only involves Ngati Whatua and the various councils and government agencies with statutory responsibilities in the area but also a whole range of other research agencies, business and community groups that are working together to improve the health of the harbour. The approach is one that combines both a scientific and a Matauranga Maori approach to restoring the health of the harbour.

On November 15 and 16, the IKHMG will host Kaipara Moana — looking back… thinking forward at the Te Ao Marama Cultural Centre in Te Hana. The event aims to offer something

of interest to all — from farmers to environmental managers, industry to hapu and government and non-government organisations.

It will provide an opportunity hear about research underway around the harbour and catchment, to listen to the stories of those involved in projects, to

network and share knowledge and to contribute towards the future direction of the group.

Additional information on the Kaipara Harbour, the activities of the IKHMG and extra details on the upcoming event can be found on the website www.kaiparaharbour.net.nz.

Made For New Zealand Conditions

Ready, set, enter — Dairy Industry Awards 2015Organisers of the 2015 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards are encouraging people to take advantage of this year’s competition.

Entries are now being accepted for three categories — New Zealand Sharemilker/Equity Farmer of the Year, New Zealand Farm Manager of the Year and New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the Year.

The competition attracted 572 entrants in 2014 and national convenor Chris Keeping says organisers are hopeful of similar numbers in next year’s event.

“One of our key messages this year will be to encourage people to enter so they are better positioned to capitalise on any opportunities that may arise from a forecast period of lower milk payout.

“We recommend people use the entry process to do some strategic planning for their business career and the judging process, to fine tune their budget. The judges may also identify opportunities where other gains can be made.”

Mrs Keeping says the ‘phenomenal’ response to the dairy trainee competition, with nearly 300 entries received in 2014, has led to some changes — particularly around the timing of entries.

“The best way a new entrant in the dairy industry can progress their career is by entering the Dairy Industry Awards. It’s a no-brainer really and the word must be spreading.

“The competition is attracting those who are focussed and determined to do a great job on-farm, to raise their reputation and to move up to the next position.

“We haven’t had a former dairy trainee winner claim the sharemilker/equity farmer title yet — but it is only

a matter of time. The speed at which some are progressing in the industry is impressive!”

The Awards are supported by national sponsors Westpac, DairyNZ, Ecolab, Federated Farmers, Fonterra, Honda Motorcycles NZ, LIC, Meridian Energy, Ravensdown, RD1 and Triplejump, along with industry partner Primary ITO.

Entrants first compete in one of 11 regional competitions held around the country, with all regional winners progressing to a national final.

All entries should be received online at www.dairyindustryawards.co.nz by November 30.

Fur ther information on the competitions and entry process is available online.

New life for old buildingsTravel around rural New Zealand and you will soon pass by structures built originally for one specific purpose, only to be transformed into something completely different.

It may be a barn, a church, or even a humble shearing shed, but imagination, innovation, and a little hard work will have radically altered the intent of the original structure.

Creating a new home from a dilapidated old building intended for a purpose entirely different takes imagination, time, perseverance and foresight as well as a highly flexible approach to budgeting but if you are creative and resourceful, the end result can be great.

For the most part a rural building, be it on old church for a community long since absorbed into populations elsewhere — usually into an urban area, or a barn, or shearers’ quarters, will be found in nice rural settings, perhaps

with old established trees or shelter belts, and often water nearby.

When embarking on a renovation project you need to note that the grand purpose is to retain the unique character of such buildings while coping with structural and design problems as you uncover them. Old structures are a lot more work than building from the ground up.

Check first with the local council authority, to make sure you can begin conversion work. Just because you may have acquired an empty barn does not mean you will automatically be able to

convert it. Many barns, churches and other old buildings are restricted by the historic places people — or you may need the big tick from a church authority.

Another prerequisite will be to have any building properly surveyed before taking the big step of purchase and change. Architects and structural engineers come into play here.

Conversion opportunities are as diverse as the number of buildings around — farm buildings, rural churches, and in New Zealand, increasingly, abandoned rural schools and even the odd cottage hospital.

Amendments aim to tidy up building actby Andy Bryenton

The rollout of changes to New Zealand’s building act — the document which governs the standards and practices of the building industry — has changed the landscape within the industry in recent years.

The emphasis on responsibility has been passed on to project managers, builders and subcontractors in allied trades in a big way, making it more important than ever to engage only trusted, qualified tradespeople to work on your home or business build.

Now another round of amendment changes is set to become law, rolling out in two stages. The first has already been implemented as of October, while the rest come into effect on January 1, 2015.

The aim of these amendments, according to the Government’s body responsible for building standards and quality, is to provide peace of mind to customers, and to remove so-called ‘cowboys’ from the construction related trades altogether, through the provision of hefty fines for working without the right accreditation.

Right now, it is illegal for unauthorised people to work on a build — plumbing must be done by qualified plumbers, gas installed by qualified gasfitters, wiring by qualified electricians. If a builder is in charge of the entire project, he must have the right credentials too, and assure the provenance of his subcontractors.

by the amendment. As the onus goes on builders and project managers to provide longer guarantees and more binding contracts, groups such as the Certified Builders and Master Builders have already rolled out considerable initiatives putting them ahead of the curve of what the modern trade and its regulations demand.

As of January 1st all building work over $30,000 in value must have a written contract. Tradespeople will be required by law to disclose their credentials and current licensing status, or face heavy penalties.

There will also be an enforced one year ‘defect repair period’, during which a builder must repair any defects the customer informs them about — ‘no questions asked’.

Rules like these place a great responsibility on individual builders, and are rumoured by some to be a precursor to changes to the Resource Management Act enabling the fast-tracking of local authorities’ role in the pre-build process — a ‘red tape cutting’ move which was a key election issue.

Large, organised builders’ associations such as the Certified Builders already adhere to the codes of best practice and strict qualifications monitoring demanded

Fuel from the forests? The way has been paved towards a potential biofuels industry in New Zealand from forestry residues and reduced emissions from the fumigant methyl bromide.

Two recently completed Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) programmes have increased the biofuels prospect.

The Stump to Pump PGP programme, led by Norske Skog Tasman and Z Energy, has concluded its study into the commercial viability of a biofuels

business from radiata pine residues. “This programme has provided a significant amount of technical understanding around the potential to produce biofuels from forestry waste,” saisys, the director of PGP at the Ministry for Primary Industries, Justine Gilliland

“The programme has completed a comprehensive and rigorous assessment of all key aspects from feedstock characteristics and availability, to design and technical viability of a test plant, to fuel distribution and logistics,” she said.

“Having gained confidence that it is technically feasible, the next stage is to firm up the commercial viability and ensure that the products meet specifications for the intended markets and applications.

“This work may take two or three years and will be industry funded, at which point there is an opportunity to potentially continue towards plant development and ultimately commercialisation.”

The Stakeholders in Methyl Bromide Reduction (STIMBR) PGP programme set out to research sustainable and effective alternative treatments for methyl bromide.

“Methyl bromide is used as a fumigant for New Zealand logs and

other imported and exported primary sector products, It’s an ozone depleting substance, approved for quarantine and phytosanitary (plant health) treatments, so this PGP programme will have obvious long term environmental benefits.

“The programme identified that methyl bromide treatment rates may be able to be reduced by 40 percent. It identified promising methyl bromide destruction technologies, and developed a proof of concept for Joule Heating technology as a possible niche phytosanitary treatment for high value logs,” she says.

“The work completed by the programme will allow industry to keep up the good momentum as it seeks alternative treatments for methyl bromide and the development of technologies to reduce emissions to meet the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2020 deadline for no release of methyl bromide to the atmosphere.”

Evaluations of both programmes will now be carried out.

Thinking about schooling?A common question for parents is why they should take the option of boarding school for their offspring.

The rural isolation and lack of good educational facilities is an obvious springboard for any decision .

There are many reasons to go to boarding school. The academics, the athletics and the extracurricular activities are just a few of the considerations. But there’s more

Boarding schools traditionally hire teachers with degrees in their subjects. As well a large number of these experienced teachers have advanced degrees in their field.

Typically all are passionate about their subject and love to teach it to young people.

Because discipline is rarely a problem in boarding school, these talented teachers get to teach without having

to be traffic cops or paper pushers like their public school counterparts.

Most boarding schools have amazing sports facilities. The range of sports and teams is mind-boggling. You will find everything from squash to crew, hockey to basketball. So are equestrian facilities. Many boarding school fitness facilities make commercial fitness establishments look tame.

Theatre, dance, music, fine arts, in short anything and everything artistic is part of the opportunity which awaits you at most boarding schools.

It’s never easy to leave the nest. But pupils will will learn how to cope with life and all its many high and low points within a community of peers all under the watchful eye of experienced teachers.

Vital link in the rescue chainby Andy Bryenton

As boaties take to the ocean waves this summer for sports, recreation and that all important big catch, a key issue on the minds of prudent captains is of course water safety.

Checking that your vessel is seaworthy and ready for everything that our capricious coastal waters can throw at it is a top priority, with a checklist of safety equipment stowed and prepared for any eventuality. These days boaties can rely on a rescue ‘safety net’ which would have been the envy of their forefathers — an integrated effort involving the Coast Guard, Air Force and Navy should things go disastrously wrong.

Countless lives have been saved thanks to the efforts of these heroic services and others who have pitched in to assist those in distress on the seas, but making their job easier is always a wise investment. That’s why a key tool in the smart captain’s arsenal is a GPS locator beacon, able to summon aid from far over the horizon.

Similar to the ELT beacons carried by aircraft or the PLB personal locators taken into the wilds by outdoorsmen, EPIRB (emergency positioning indicating radio beacon) units are designed just

for maritime use. Some even activate automatically when they are immersed in water, saving lives should the crew of a foundering vessel be knocked unconscious in a disaster. EPIRB beacons send a radio signal which is picked up by a satellite above, then relayed to the appropriate rescue services, who can swing into action and deploy as soon as the message comes through.

Modern EPIRB units operate on the 406 Megahertz frequency, a channel monitored constantly by the staff of the Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand. It’s of supreme importance to check that your beacon works on this frequency — otherwise a call for help may not reach the right ears! Equally vital is registering your beacon to your craft — when the RCCNZ operatives receive a distress call, they can match the individual beacon to a database, finding out your home port, the size of your party, your estimated course

and other info to help send boats and aircraft to the right place to effect a speedy rescue. Boaties can register their beacons by following this free link www.beacons.org.nz/register.

As part of a co-ordinated emergency plan, these modern locator beacons are invaluable, but Maritime New Zealand stresses that a fail-safe option should also be in place — consider back-up,

such as old fashioned flares, strobe lights, audible horns or whistles, or a CB radio system to augment your EPIRB. And, if an accident of a different kind happens and the beacon is set off in error, it’s possible to call 0508 472 269 and cancel an unneeded rescue. There’s no penalty for setting off an EPIRB by mistake — it’s better to be safe than sorry!

New lifejackets for oldWith summer on our doorstep Coastguard has launched its ‘Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade’ campaign with a van laden with brand new lifejackets visiting boat ramps around the greater Auckland region.

Anyone who owns a lifejacket will be able upgrade their current one for a brand new fit for purpose lifejacket with a competitive trade in discount.

With boaties from many areas north of the Harbour Bridge choosing the Hauraki Gulf to visit, it is a great chance to upgrade their safety gear.

The Old4New initiative with the tagline — ‘Wear a lifejacket. It never ruined a day on the water’ began on November 8 at

Half Moon Bay Marina and will visit over 40 boat ramps over summer with two sessions per day from 6.30am–9.30am and again from 3.30pm–6.30pm. A full location schedule of ramp visits can be downloaded from coastguard.org.nz.

“This is a great way for Coastguard to get out and about to talk to boaties about boating safety. Having a fit for purpose lifejacket is vital when heading out on the water and the ‘Old4New

Lifejacket Upgrade’ Campaign makes it very convenient to get the appropriate lifejacket and the right fit. Our team will be on hand to provide advice and we hope as many people as possible take the opportunity to upgrade their old lifejackets,” said CEO, Coastguard New Zealand, Patrick Holmes.

“We are thrilled to bring this to communities around the region and really encourage the public to engage and take advantage of the opportunity. The campaign forms a key part of Coastguard’s advocacy for safe and enjoyable boating over the 2014/15 summer boating season.

Maritime Management Centre spokesman Neil Patchett said: “A primary aim of the project is to break down the perception that all lifejackets are just big, bulky and uncomfortable, and promote awareness of modern, functional jackets that can be worn in comfort for the duration of a typical day out in a boat.”

Debating a beef co-operativeAfter some lean years that produced a fair bit of hardship for beef farmers, their prospects are looking up as they enjoy high prices of up to $5.90 per kilogram for prime steers and with bulls fetching $6.00 a kilo.

The has been much debate in the media on ‘where to from here’. Some are advocating that the beef industry

should form a Fonterra-type co-operative — but on the opposite side of the coin are those who ask that if the Fonterra co-operative model is the way forward for beef farmers, how is it Fonterra can’t halt the fall in milk prices. The suggestion of a lack of modern-day farmer loyalty has also been raised as an argument that forming co-operatives does not guarantee continued farmer loyalty and supply.

It’s suggested many modern-day farmers like to enter into their own negotiations with independent processors and it is evident since the formation of Fonterra there has also been the establishment of a substantial number of independent proprietary milk processing companies, some with overseas shareholding and others like Open Country where the main shareholders are the Talley Group in the South Island who have acquired ownership of Affco — the former Auckland Farmers Freezing Company. Fonterra director Ian Farrelly, who rears 10,000 calves, said last week that the beef industry lacks a strategy

for adding value to the 1.9 million dairy farmer bobby calves which are processed every winter for veal and by-products.

Farrelly claims that if these calves were on-reared they could add billions of dollars in extra revenue to New Zealand’s agricultural export industry.

Depending on weight bobby calves can realise $2.10 per kilogram or $37.38 per head. If they were reared to 220kg–320kg weight range, at today’s prices they could realise from $1,200 to $1,800.

With regard to loyalty and what is good for farmers, I believe that today’s farmer should remember that history has shown that in the early years due to a lack of organised co-operative marketing, many farmers felt they were at the mercy of the skilled negotiators of individual companies whose offices and cool store facilities were located in Tooley Street, London. Dairy produce was all sold on the free market system with the directorates or proprietors of individual Tooley Street companies accepting full responsibility for sales and trading. They decided upon

London Tooley Street traders’ representatives used to deal directly with individual New Zealand dairy companies. It is said that a farmer’s yearly income depended on how much whisky was applied to the local dairy company manager during the negotiations.

For many decades 95.6% of New Zealand’s income came from products grown on its pastures. The New Zealand government eventually formed the New Zealand Dairy and the Meat and Wool Producer Boards in an endeavour to bring organised marketing of New Zealand’s agricultural products, with a guaranteed price system which was the price that the farmer received for his produce.

Over the years these structures have changed. It is important that we farmers should never forget the many years of hard work and investment that New Zealand farmers have committed to not only producing our agricultural products on the farm, but also being involved in the marketing and receiving our rightful share of market profits.

While there are some farmers who believe that they can better manage the marketing of their own produce, in the long term, I firmly believe that New Zealand’s farming history demonstrates that farmers who take the co-operative approach will win in the end.

Strong demand for sites at 2015 Field DaysWith only a few months to go, businesses will need to move quickly to secure sites for the 2015 Northland Field Days, says event coordinator Meagan Edmonds.

She says early-site registration has climbed 50% on last year “Anybody still on the fence on whether to attend the event next year will need to move fast if they want to come along.”

With an economy largely based on pastoral farming and forestry, Northland Field Days president Lew Duggan says the Field Days act as a showcase where farmers and forestry operators attend to get the supplies and services they will need for the next 12 months.

“It’s Northland’s biggest business event of the year, worth tens of millions in new business to the region,” says Mr Duggan. “Around 27,000 people attended the event this year alone, a figure we hope to top next year.”

An AUT Economic Impact Study in 2008 found that 1,250 people surveyed specifically went to the Field Days to buy something, with spending averaging out at $738 per visitor including food and accommodation.

Visitors to the 2015 event can expect a higher level of comfort and convenience. Mr Duggan says visitors will be able to access the site via a pedestrian-friendly walkway and buy tickets from newer, smarter gate facilities.

Businesses say a presence at Field Days helps raise their profile and generates new business. Bryant Tractors has had a site at the event

for 29 years. Director Murray Bale says it enables staff to see many potential customers in one place that they have been talking to remotely for weeks and sometimes months.

“This gives us chance to catch up with existing clients and hopefully get new clients to check out some of our products.”

Dargaville Honda owner Bruce McKenzie goes further saying, “If you’re not there you’re nowhere.” Dargaville Honda has been at Field Days for the past 12 years and Mr McKenzie says there is no comparison when it comes to lead generation.

“There is no other time of the year when so many people walk by your door,” says Mr McKenzie. “For what we spend

FMG’s Sponsorship and Events Manager Michelle Stevens says Field Days is excellent value for time and money. “Field Days is a great opportunity to get out and talk with clients and those thinking of joining us. Our philosophy is to give rural New Zealand a better deal, and getting out and meeting clients at events like this helps us achieve that,” says Mrs Stevens.

Successful mix of agribusiness and tourismby Joanne Speechly

It was love at first sight for Hans Roecoert, when he looked into the eyes of an alpaca for the first time — and almost two decades on, he’s still hooked.

After the chance meeting at the Kumeu show in the 1990s, the former chef and his wife Chris imported 30 alpacas and they now run a successful stud north of Helensville, on the Kaipara Harbour.

There are several facets to Waitakere Alpacas, including farming, tourism and the import and export of alpacas, which Hans says is the key to their success.

“Tourism is not always consistent, so we have to make sure we have other revenue streams and exporting is definitely one of those.”

The venture also includes group visits, a shop selling alpaca fibre and related products, a Bed and Breakfast farmstay, and Hans is also developing a fashion label of garments made from alpaca fibre.

From their pedigree stock of around 240 animals, Hans and Chris export prize animals to Germany, Holland,

Belgium, Taiwan and Asia, as well as meeting domestic demand in New Zealand. Hans also provides advice for people thinking of setting up an alpaca farm.

“Alpacas are easy to farm and eat less than cows, so with basic animal husbandry skills, they are ideal for a lifestyle block or small farm. They belong to the Camelidae family and were treasured by the ancient Incas for their fine fleece, which provided them with clothing, food, and companionship.”

Waitakere Alpacas — your One Stop Alpaca Shop — will hold open days on November 9 and 23 and December 7, giving people the opportunity to visit the shop, meet some alpacas, watch carding and felting demonstrations and learn more about these lovable, curious creatures.

There is no entry fee, so bring your family and friends, but please leave your dogs at home.

Hans and Chris Roecoert say alpacas make wonderful companion pets but are also an excellent business investment via tourism, fleece and breeding

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children.

There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.

What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition.
