The New Hampshire Fish andGame Department is going elec-tronic! Beginning with the 2014license year, regular hunting andfishing licenses will be comput-er-generated and printed by theagent on regular paper, just aslicenses purchased online or atWal-Mart are done now. Morethan half of hunting and fishinglicenses sold in N.H. (53%) arecurrently purchased online or atstores that use an automatedsystem. New Hampshire is oneof the few remaining stateswhere regular licenses are hand-written.

A handful of agents around thestate are already using the new

point-of-sale (POS) system as

part of a pilot project that beganin August, and things are goingwell, according to Fish andGame Licensing Supervisor SuePerry.

When 2014 hunting and fishinglicenses become available inmid-December, all Fish andGame license agents will beissuing hunting and fishinglicenses via the automated sys-

tem. Hand-written licenses willno longer be available after the2013 license year ends.

One change under the new sys-tem is that, starting with the2014 licenses, a $2 transactionfee will be charged per licenseform. This fee will go to thevendor, Sovereign SportsmanSolutions (S3), for the automat-ed system to cover the cost of itsoperation, just as online license

buyers currently pay a transac-tion fee.

The new automated systemoffers many benefits:

The New Hampshire Fish andGame Department will gainfaster access to critical licensesales data, which can takemonths to get under the old sys-tem. It will also save on printingand shipping costs, since pre-

printed license forms will not beneeded.

For consumers, the license-buy-ing transaction will be faster andeasier. In many cases, theirinformation will already be inthe system.

Fish and Game license agentswill find their administrativereporting is streamlined,

because end-of-month reportswill be computer-generated,saving them time and effort.They will save time on transac-tions at the counter, as well,

aided by helpful "prompts" toassist them during license sales.

"This should be a positive

change for everyone, because itwill allow Fish and Game tooperate more efficiently andeffectively, using technologythat has been adopted nation-wide with positive results," saidPerry.

North Conway, Goldberg usedhis talents in businesses rangingfrom furniture and antiques toreal estate and sporting goodsventures. He displayed WhiteMountains art in his stores,enticing visitors to start collect-ing. Many current collectionshave roots in his artistic savvy.

Museum Director CatherineAmidon says the exhibition cel-ebrates Goldbergs commitmentto cultivating collectors ofWhite Mountains art. Thescope of the images is broad; artis from around the WhiteMountains, including Maine. Ithighlights the diversity of whatthey bought, sold and collect-ed, she says.

The seven pieces in the exhibi-tion are on loan from the HoodMuseum at Dartmouth to whichRobert and Dorothy Goldberg

bequeathed their collect ion.This is an excellent opportuni-ty to strengthen the ties betweenthese two museums that share

such strong regional interests,Amidon added.

Greetings, and thanks for join-ing me for another week. First,its nice to know I am not theonly one who isnt perfect. Acop was responding to a burgla-ry in progress and came across akid. It turns out the kid was notinvolved in the burglary, but inthe commotion there was, in thewords of DeKalb County PoliceChief Cedric Alexander, anunintentional misfire (asopposed to an intentional mis-fire?) The unnamed 16-year-oldwas hit in the arm. [This is True]

Next, in case you missed it,principal Patricia Beaulieu ofCharlotte Avenue ElementarySchool in Nashua posted a state-ment to the schools websitesaying the playground game oftag was being banned due torecent injuries, WMUR-TVreported. Playgrounds offer achance for children to beactive, Beaulieu wrote.However, playgrounds alsohave risks, and numerousinjuries have resulted recentlyon our playground, promptingus to review school playgroundrules with all students. As you

know, the traditional recessgame tag involves one or more

players chasing other players in

an attempt to tag or touchthem. However, the force withwhich students tag variesgreatly. Some parents said they

believe the ban takes safety toofar. One incident leads to,Lets ban everything, one

parent said. Our kids should bewrapped in bubble wrap andsent to school. It seems kind ofsilly. Some parents said thereare more hazardous playgroundactivities that are not banned atthe school. (By the way, how are

Nashuas football teams doing?)

A father is charged with severalcrimes after investigators saidhe took aim and fired at hisdaughters friends. CarltonWalker Jr. is charged with twocounts of abduction, two countsof use of a firearm in the com-mission of a felony and twocounts of firing into an occupiedvehicle. Walker, investigatorssaid, held two teenagers at gun-

point with a shotgun when theydropped his daughter off at hishome. Walker was upset, inves-tigators said, because the friends

brought his daughter home late after 12:30 a.m. When thefriends tried to leave, Walker

blocked the driveway, accordingto investigator. He then pulledout a shotgun and ordered hiswife to call police. He wantedthe friends charged with abduc-tion. But when deputies arrived,it was the father charged with

pulled the trigger hitting her inthe chest and killing her. Delcidadmitted to detectives he wastrying to scare her. [ABC15

Its a guy thing, okay? AnOklahoma high school student

said he was suspended for refus-ing to change out of a breastcancer awareness shirt reading,Save the Scenery. JeremyAlexander, a junior, said hewore the shirt, which wasdesigned by a student at theschool and sold in cooperationwith the Twin Peaks restaurant,to class and the shirt resulted inhis suspension from school.Alexander, whom officials saidwas only sent home for theremainder of the day, said hisshirt reads Twin Peaks on thefront and says Save theScenery on the back. SeniorDeric Winters, who designedthe shirt, described the schools

policy as double standards.Students said the school previ-

ously sold T-shirts readingSave Second Base and Bigor Small, Save Them All. The

principal of the school admittedthe school previously sold theSave Second Base T-shirts.[UPI] Busted!

When I commented on my pick-ing the pasture, my wife told methe average horse leaves about50 pounds of, uh, droppings aday (we have 2-1/2 horses). Ididnt Snope it, but I am not sur-

prised.

I am still amazed that we areelated when gas drops to say$3.39 and think thats wonder-ful. And when politicians doanything!

So texting and driving is illegalin NH, but going before thecourt is a case to determine ifreading a text while driving isokay. Just between us, I dontthink court is needed for thatone.

About a month ago, Atticus andI sat on the familiar steep rockledges about a hundred yards

below the summit of MountPotash. We had the mountain toourselves, and if you had stum-

bled upon us you wouldnt havethought anything was wrong.We sat as we usually do side-

by-side, sipping water, enjoyingthe view, enjoying the silence.Rising up in front of us stoodPassaconaway, Son of the Bear;West and East Sleeper; and theTripyramids. We know these

peaks as well as we know somefriends; thats how familiartheyve become to us throughthe years.

Potash is an interesting moun-tain to climb. Its only a 3.6mile round trip, but there aresections that are pretty darnsteep. Although there isntmuch elevation gain in the

beginning, over the entire 1.8miles it rises up 1,480 feetwhich tells you how challengingit can be.

Potash is part of the SandwichRange that runs from WatervilleValley in the west over toChocorua in the east. The peakshave a different feel to them,almost primitive. The trails arerough and dark. Many of themountains are named for leg-endary Indians. I like it there

because it is rarely crowded onmost of the lesser known peaks

and it feels as though climbingthrough those woods is like hid-ing inside of a secret. The foresthas a mythic texture to it. Itsthe stuff of Tolkiens hobbits,elves, and dwarves.

On that hike a month ago wedidnt make it to the top.Atticus had enough of theclimb. He was happy to sit andtake in the views where wewere. It was during a rough

point between his second andthird chemo treatments, and his

blood levels were dipping lowerthan they should be. While hewas moving slowly over thetossed rock and tangled root ofthe mountain, he was happy tokeep moving. As if often thecase, we checked in with eachother to see how the other isdoing. I do it by watching himand asking him. He asks with a

particular look in his eye. Its alook halfway between contem-

plation and concern as he stud-ies me. I typically say, Imokay. How about you?Sometimes he will toss his headas if to nod and then look up thetrail, an action Ive taken tomean Im ready when youare.

But since the cancer came andthe amputation and the chemo,

we move more slowly. Lately,we spend a lot of time walkingtogether. Instead of followingAtticus, he spends just as muchtime following me. Its a sign ofthe chemo but also of times tocome as he grows older. Itsokay. We simply adjust as wego as we always have.

I never worry about whether ornot Atticus can do something.Hes always found a way toexpress what he wants or needs.And on that day, just a hundredyards or so below the mountain-top he wanted to sit for a while.So we sat. We looked out at a

place we call home. When it

was time to get up I asked him,Do you want to go say helloto the top, or do you want to go

home?

He turned to go home.

He had no trouble making itdown the mountain, and heseemed content, if not happy,and he was very healthythroughout the night and duringthe next day.

When I told another hiker aboutthis a few days later, she asked,Why didnt you pick him upand carry him to the top?

Because he didnt want to go.

Im not sure if she thought I wasbeing flippant or not, but it wasnot my intent. Atticus alwayshas a say. Its how weveaccomplished what we have. Itry to put him in the best posi-tion to succeed on a mountain

by making good choices and helets me know what he can andcant do. Hes very self-assuredin this way.

On that day, Atticus had hadenough of going up. So insteadwe went down and then we wenthome and all was well.

Yesterday, on the same toughtrail, we took our time. Imfighting the lingering grip of a

cold with congested lungs whileAtticus is getting ready for hisfourth chemo treatment. But itwas clear that hes feeling betterthan I am. While we stoppedand rested frequently, some-times for me to cough, others totake in the views or a bit ofwater, we continued going up.When we reached the place westopped at just a month before, a

place weve passed more thantwenty times on the way up thisrugged peak of 2,680 feet, we

passed on by and made the lastleaps and bounds to the top.

Again we had it to ourselves, aswe usually do. He climbed tothe highest point, took in the

view; sat and took it in somemore. We ate our late lunch anddrank, and the breeze came and

the clouds parted, and blue skieswere revealed as were the rustcolored valleys below show-ing off the lingering leavestucked in the waves of ever-greens for as far as the eye cansee.

Atticus looked at me, and Iknew to pick him up. Wewalked over to the edge, and he

put his head next to mine asweve done more than a thou-sand mountaintop times.Together we took it all in. I saidmy simple prayer, Thank you.I dont know what he says, butthe expression of peace andtranquility in his eyes, the heav-enly sigh, the way his fullweight relaxes into mine, I thinkit also equates to a prayer ofgratitude.

In life, there will always be peo-ple who tell you what youshouldnt be doing. RecentlyIve received a few letters from

people scolding me for hikingwhile hes going throughchemo. These are the same kindof people who told me long agowe shouldnt be hiking in thewinter or hiking in any weatherat all because Atticus was just

too small. I tend to ignore theadvice of self-proclaimedexperts and consider instead the

communion of two souls fromdifferent species when we aretogether on high.

Its sacred and trusted momentssuch as yesterdays, and whathappened just over a month agoon the same mountain that tellsme when a needle is slid into anartery in Atticuss leg and the

poison of chemotherapy isinjected into his little body tofight the poison of cancer that assoon as he lays his head uponmy hand and our foreheadstouch and eyes meet as theyoften do on a trail well be justfine. Just as we always have

been. Just as we always shallbe.

Bath residents Karen Fesler andState Representative LindaLauer were among a select

group of individuals thatreceived awards at the NewHampshire Nongame &Endangered Wildlife Programs25th Anniversary Dinner onSaturday, October 5 at theGrappone Center. Certificatesof Appreciation from the pro-gram were presented to individ-uals who have performed distin-guished service to help preserve

New Hampshire's non-game,threatened and endangeredwildlife species. Karen andLinda, along with Jean Enofrom Greenland, received theConservation Team Award fortheir work with the UNHCooperative Extension's"Speaking for Wildlife" pro-gram. The program, which has

been in existence for approxi-mately three years, providesfree educational talks to localgroups and schools on wildlife-related topics.

This was an unexpectedhonor, said Fesler. To us, theSpeaking for Wildlife pro-gram is just a way to give backto the community and help pre-serve the character of our adopt-ed state. Weve given talks toa number of local organiza-tions, added Lauer, and werealways looking for more oppor-tunities. Both Fesler and Lauerare graduates of the NewHampshire COVERTS pro-gram, which provides 25 indi-viduals each year with 3 daysof in-depth training in wildlife

habitat conservation and foreststewardship. In exchange forthe training, participants agreeto return to their communitiesand motivate others to becomestewards of the state's wildlifeand forest resources.

proposed a plan for starting anafter school Lego Club follow-ing a survey that showed 42 outof 61 kids would like to partici-

pate in such a program. Caleb

has always had a fascinationwith Legos and was happy tofind out that so many other kidsat his school shared this interest.He and his mom,the third gradeteacher at BVS, presented their

proposal for a weekly, 90minute, after school Lego Clubto Principal Mary Snowman.

After being given the greenlight, the two quickly got busysecuring funding and volunteers

for the club. The Schools PTOmade a generous $800.00 dona-tion to help the program getstarted. This money was used to

buy essential basics: wheels,windows, roof tiles, and lots of

bricks. Legos are many things,but cheap is not one of them.Additional fundraising wassought out and delivered fromlocal businesses, family andfriends of Bath Village School.

In addition to third gradeteacher, Kristen Avery, facilitat-ing the club meetings, firstgrade teacher, Caiti Fullertonhas volunteered her time aswell. And of course there arethose behind the scene parentsthat help out in so many ways

without even giving it a secondthought.

Each meeting starts with a snackprovided by member familiesand a review of the clubs guid-ing principles:

L= leadership lead by exampleand model positive behaviorE= empathy show understand-ing of another's situation andfeelingsG= golden rule treat others theway you want to be treatedO= ownership take responsibili-

ty for your actions and makeamendsS= safety protecting self andothers from harm

Next students visit stations theyare interested in, not having to

participate in all stations if theydont want to: Free LegoBuilding, Lego Quests, LegoGames, Lego Hero Factory,Lego Speedorz, Lego ipad/computers, Lego Reading,Lego Writing, Lego arts andcrafts, and Lego Stop Motionmovie making. Students areable to showcase their creationsfor the entire school to see

before they are recycled andreused at the next meeting.

Establishing a school wide LegoClub promotes social skillslearning. Social skills are a very

hard group of skills to teach tokids and especially challengingfor students with AspergersSyndrome, an autism spectrumdisorder. This club providesauthentic learning opportunities

that foster positive school cli-mate and acceptance of stu-dents unique differences. Thereis a lot of building going on andit isnt all with Lego Bricks.

Top story! I am so sick and tiredof the way our government hasbeen running! PERIOD!

What a bunch of whiny, prissy,too good for us bunch of crybabies we have in office, run-ning our government.

People in the USA are fed up, asthey should be. This is no longera government by the people forthe people, its more like a gov-ernment by the government forthe government.

Our politicians, yes, from thePresident right on down to thelast little house member whohas to lock the door before theyleave. This government of oursright now, has stooped to newlows.

With ratings lower thanplumber Joe ever thought possi-ble, our political officials justkeep on sinking lower andlower.

They cant work together, theycant stand each other andinstead of working for the

American public, have simplystarted working for themselves.

A government shutdown! Soinstead of cutting the red tape atthe top of the political realm,they instead cut everything tothe blue collar federal workers.

As they are still getting paid bythe way. This crew of self right-eous people at the top, see noth-ing outside of Washington. Butwait, they saved us as usual,right at the last minute. Give it arest!

They are all in it for their own

personal gains, instead of work-ing together for the people ofthis country - and it never ceas-es to amaze me at how low they

will actually go to keep theother side from gaining just alittle.

This is no longer about what isright for the country. This is nolonger what is right for the

world and it certainly is nolonger doing what is right forthe people of this nation. Its allabout them.

I for one am totally fed up withit. It no longer matters if its

Democrat or Republican, as itseems neither wants to give aninch, never mind doing what isright.

Its all about them. Once youhave a government that has lostits focus and has lost its faithwith the people, ... well, we arein for a long tough journey!

Is there not something so wrong,when a government can contin-ue to pay out billions in over-

seas funding, but choose to shut

down their own country, fur-lough their own people andclose down memorials, parksand forests that Americans useeach and every day?

I am somewhat amazed andbemused that there are still peo-

ple, other than politicians, whoare willing to sing the praises ofObamacare in a public

forum. I find it somewhat akinto someone pointing out thewonderful qualities of theTitanic as it sinks to the bottomof the Atlantic.

Obamacare has never reallybeen about healthcare. Itsalways been about expandingthe reach and power of the fed-eral government, taking awaymore of our Liberty and makingus more dependent upon a cen-tralized government for our wellbeing. It is the jewel in the pro-

gressive/socialist crown thatObama seeks to wear. Vladimir

Lenin once declared that;

socialized medicine is the key-stone to the arch of the socialiststate.

This legislation is, quite frankly,a mess and the attempts toimplement it have thus far beena disaster. It was written largelyin secret by people who I canonly assume are socialists intheir heart of hearts and votedinto law by lock-step Democratswho never read it. I believe thatit was intentionally written in away that discourages people

from reading and understandingit.

I sincerely hope that people areclear about which party hasbeen unwilling to negotiate inregard to the current stalematein Congress. Obama and thecongressional Democrats haveexempted themselves and manyof their cronies from the effectsof this bill, but they are unwill-ing to delay the floundering

implementation of this assaulton Liberty for the rest of usbecause they dont want it tak-ing effect in close proximity tothe 2014 elections.

Why is it that the ones who areso indifferent to the rights of

Then, we have our locals, wholove the free booze and foul lan-

guage that they have at theirbonfires, and neighbors acrossthe river can hear as clear as ifit were in their own yards.

Their is NO reasonable causefor this stupidity. The localauthorities either say they can'tor they just ignore all of this.

Well, I for one would like to seea respect for others resolu-tion in the Town of Warren. Thiswould eliminate any loud andobnoxious noises within a rea-

sonable distance of neighborswho might object.

After all, this only occurs whenout-of-towners arrive. Enoughis enough.

This article was last posted inMay and I think it needs to beshared again with my readers; Ireceived 4 calls in the past weekabout this scam. I have had cus-tomers say they have receivedcalls from Microsoft that theircomputer was infected by avirus. Here is narrative fromScott Brande of WindowsSecrets of what happened to himwhen he got one of those calls;

Scott's description of how thescam played out:

"This morning I received a tele-phone call (the second such callin two weeks) about infectedfiles on my computer; the callerthen offered to fix the problem.Suspecting a scam, I decided to

play along.

"I think it was the same callerboth times. He had a strongaccent, the kind I'm used tohearing on outsourced helplines. I asked the caller's name

both times; the first time hereplied, 'Mike Tyler,' and thesecond time he was 'Andrew.'He began the call by saying thathe's with Microtek, an author-ized supporter for Windowsoperating systems. (My spellingof the company's name was aguess; the caller never spelled itout.)

"I asked immediately whetherthis was a sales call. Withoutdirectly answering my question,he launched into what soundedlike a script. He stated: 'Ourservers have received informa-tion from your computer thatindicates it is infected.'

"When I questioned him abouthis company, he told me I'd find'Microtek' listed on [an online

business directory] as if alisting in the directory were

proof his call was legitimate!When asked where the company

was located, he replied,'Houston, Texas.' I then askedfor his employee ID; he gave me'MSCE079502.'

"(After the call, I ran an onlinesearch and came up with aMicrotek in Houston; it's atraining facility for businesscomputer users not a techni-cal-support center. I assume thecaller just picked Microtek'sname off the Web. I don't

believe the real Microtek hadanything to do with the bogustech-support call.)

"Changing topics, I asked howhe knew my computer wasinfected. He replied that hiscompany is an authorizedMicrosoft Partner and, because Iuse Microsoft Windows, mycomputer sends notifications toMicrotek servers.

"I then asked how he knewabout my specific computer; hestated that his server getsupdates from my PC. He thenasked whether I ran WindowsUpdate. When I said yes, hewent on to say that Microtekservers got the informationabout infected files in my sys-tem via Windows Update.

"I countered, stating thatWindows Update goes only toMicrosoft servers notMicrotek servers. But he simplyrepeated that Microtek is anauthorized Microsoft Partner.

"Next, I asked him which one ofmy computers was infected (Ihave several at home), to whichhe said something vague about aMAC address. When askedwhich MAC address he had formy machine, he would stateonly that, for 'security reasons,'he couldn't tell me the MACaddress (even though it was myown PC).

"At this point, I expressed mydoubts about all this informa-tion. But he was quite persist-ent; he stated that 'some of ourclients in your area have been

affected by the infected files onyour machine.' He then claimedI had upward of '1,000 infectedfiles.' When asked who theselocal clients were, he said hecouldn't tell me that (of course).

"I asked how his clients'machines could possibly beaffected by my home computer.He didn't answer this but wentdirectly to the following: 'OK,I'll show you the infected fileson your computer.' He instruct-ed me to enter .inf into the Startmenu search box, then declaredthat all these files were 'infected'(that .inf stands for 'infected' or'infection').

"At that point, I said I didn'tbelieve that was true; it was myunderstanding that .inf was a

particular type of file that comeswith software installed on mycomputer.

"At this point, he ended the call probably because I knew that.inf didn't refer to infected files.As it was, I'd had him on theline for a good 15 minutes.

A customer called me and saidthat when she asked how muchthe cleanup will cost the guyreplied $300.00 when she saidshe was not going to pay thescammer started deleting pic-tures of her late husband fromher computer. If you get such acall just hang up, I hope thishelps any questions you can
