The North Star Dakotan is a publication of the North Dakota Humanities Council. The NSD is a project that began in the mid 1990s by the late Everett C. Albers and D. Jerome Tweton as a way to get quality North Dakota Studies content to North Dakota educators at no cost. This issue of the NSD examines the ramifications of the American Civil War and the tertiary battles that were fought in Dakota Territory as a result of the Dakota Conflict of 1862 in Minnesota. General Sibly and General Sully led union forces in 1863 and 1864, west into Dakota Territory as punitive campaigns against the Sioux.
