ravens team meet Wickenheiser

bethany [email protected] north shore ravens bantam girls’ hockey team spentthe first full day of olympic competition in unforgettablestyle — watching the canadian women’s hockey team win itsfirst game and then meeting a women’s hockey legend.

the ravens won a draw organized by samsun electronics tomeet canadian team captain hayley wickenheiser and watchcanada trounce the competition in the first hockey match-up ofthe Games from canada hockey Place in downtown Vancouver.

ravens goalie and north Vancouver resident Kailynnsnelgrove, age 15, said that it was a great day for the 15 younghockey players. “it was a lot of fun. we got pictures andautographs from hayley,” she said.

the girls watched the canadian women hammer slovakia bya score of 18-0 — a record for most goals scored in olympicwomen’s hockey.

“it was a lot of fun, and the seats that we had were very nice,”snelgrove said. “it was a really good game to get to see.”

she said it was hard to pick a favourite moment in the day.“most of the game was the best, but being able to cheer forcanada and have them break the record was amazing.”

the team found out tuesday they’d been selected from teamswho registered early for a tournament scheduled for burnaby inapril. “i was super, super excited,” snelgrove said of her reactionwhen she learned she’d get to meet wickenheiser.

on sunday afternoon, snelgrove was back out on the icepractising with the rest of the ravens, but she said she plannedto be glued to the television over the next two weeks as thecanadian hockey teams take to the rink. “i’ll be following allthe hockey,” snelgrove said, adding that her expectations forthe canadian men’s and women’s hockey teams are “high, veryhigh.”

she’s also lucky enough to have tickets to watch one morehockey game, as the swedish and slovakian women’s teams faceoff on monday night.

north Vancouver friendsandrea nelson-lee andchristina duncan made itto the line-up for the tramride at the base of Grouse atabout 2:30 a.m. to find severalhundred fans already there— some of whom had campedout all night for the chance to

take part in the taping.“the core group of people

were screaming fans formichael bublé,” said nelson-lee, who managed to makeit in to the chalet to becomepart of the audience. “we werewithin six or eight feet of him.”

in contrast to the lackof snow that’s plaguedVancouver venues like cypressover the past month, atthe top of Grouse, “it wasnice and snowy. it was very

picturesque,” said nelson-lee.“Grouse mountain lookedgorgeous.”

nelson-lee said she wasimpressed with the tV show, which began taping at 4 a.m.in time to catch viewers at7 a.m. in their key easternnorth american market.among those featured alongwith bublé and u.s. olympichopefuls was b.c. Premier

Gordon campbell and celebritychef daniel boulud. as part oftheir olympic kick-off, todayshow hosts also made a pointof showing off Grouse’s Peakchalet, which has become Today’sbroadcast centre, along withinteraction with outdoor crowdsat the skating ring and bonfire.

today’s guests included k.d.lang and wayne Gretzky.

another person who couldn’tbe happier with the inauguralbroadcast was chris dagenais, director of communications forGrouse mountain resort.

dagenais said getting the TodayShow to broadcast from Grousehas been a goal he’s been pursuingfor about five years. “it was ahuge, huge coup for us,” he said.

dagenais said a big part ofGrouse’s appeal for the show was,“they didn’t want to be in anurban centre. they wanted to bein the heart of winter.”

Getting the show’s equipmentand setting up a studio at thetop of the mountain has been ahuge undertaking leading up tothe olympics, with thousandsand thousands of pounds of geargetting moved up in the sky ridein the past month. today, thePeak chalet is “a huge network ofwires and cameras and rigging,”said dagenais, and massive lightsflood the outside areas. “it lookslike something big is happening.”

Today, the top-rated u.s.morning news show, has aviewership of between two andfive million.

women were well back fromczech gold medallist martinasablikova, who set a trackrecord and finished more thantwo seconds clear of beckert.

Groves looked to be onpace to win silver, but fadedin the final three laps and waspassed by beckert in the finalstrides of their contest.

team canada flagbearerclara hughes placed fifth witha time of four minutes, 6.01seconds. cindy Klassen, a 30-year-old speed skating veteranand canada’s most decoratedolympian, stormed off the lineto vocal crowd approval, butwas clearly struggling near theend and placed 14th. Klassenrecently underwent surgery onboth knees.

Germany dominatedmen’s luge, with Felix lochclaiming gold and teammatedavid moeller winning silver.defending olympic championarmin Zoeggeler won bronzefor italy. samuel edneyproduced canada’s best-evershowing with a seventh-placefinish. jeff christie placed 14thand ian cockerline came 20th.

Georgian luger levanGureshidze did not compete.

France won a pair of goldmedals: Vincent jay in men’s10-kilometre sprint biathlon, and jason lamy chappuis inmen’s nordic combined.

canada’s jean Phillippeleguellec placed sixth in sprintbiathlon.

olympic title, much to the chagrin of canadian ski fans.the 25-year-old was born and raised in west Vancouverand began his career competing for the canadian team.but the canadian Freestyle ski association objected tobegg-smith scheduling training around the demands of hissuccessful internet business. the two sides couldn’t reach acompromise, and begg-smith decamped to the australiansquad, who didn’t object to his multitasking. a man of fewwords, begg-smith has since become a self-made multi-millionaire.

the north shore product turned self-made aussieplaced fourth in qualifying, something of a disappointmentfor a man widely regarded as the best mogul skier in theworld. his final run was technically precise, but slower andless ambitious than bilodeau’s.

bilodeau first made a splash in 2006, appearing at theturin olympics as an 18-year-old and later becoming theyoungest person ever to win a world cup moguls event.

among the ecstatic crowd at cypress mountain wasbilodeau’s older brother Frederic, who lives with cerebralpalsy. before the event, bilodeau vowed to have his brotherjoin him at the podium if he won a medal.
