Things are heating up and now that the official planting sea-son is upon us, there is excitement for the 2nd annual explosion of fresh food in the Pub-lic Produce Garden Perhaps this is true of your own gardens too!

The Kamloops Film Society announced the Ju-ried Prize winners for the 5th Kamloops Indepen-dent Short Short (KISS) Film Festival follow-ing a public screening held Thursday, May 17 at the Clocktower Auditorium at Thompson Rivers University. The “short short” in the KISS name connotes the temporal nature of the competition entries, which must be five minutes in duration or less.

A 1st prize of $500 was awarded for “Supervil-lain” by Dusan Magdolen. Dusan, who has been submitting a short film in the KISS Competition for five years, took the top honour for the first time.

The echo’s own editor, Jody Tippett, moon-lighting as a filmmaker, earned herself $250 for her animation “So Long Holly” which took second place. Kelly Aulin placed third with his short titled, “Committee. A Youth Prize, for filmmakers 18 years and under, was awarded for “The Letter”, by Kora Vanderlip. Two Special Jury Prize were also awarded. The first for Mise en Scene went to Kora Vanderlip, for her arrangement of scenery, while a prize for editing was awarded to Igor Kostin for “Unbreak-able”.

Following the screenings, the audience had the opportunity to vote for their favourite and “Supervillain” was once again recognized. Igor Kostin and Bruno Mazzotta were each awarded the TNRD Short Film Award at the Ka-mloops Film Society’s Kamloops Independent Short Shorts (KISS) Film Festival. The prize, worth $150, was given to short films that best de-pict a place, person or attraction in the TNRD in an interesting and compelling way. “Kostin and Mazzotta should be commended for their origi-nal, and very different, takes on what they find fascinating about the Thompson-Nicola Regional District,” said Vicci Weller, executive Director of the Thompson-Nicola Film Commission. A spe-cial mention went to Archie and Chayla Wilcox of Chase, who produced and directed the animat-ed message film Under Pressure about the need to recycle to help save the planet. While the ani-mation is cute and funny, and the film is an over-all delight, the message is strong, according to Weller.

The Kamloops Film Society stages an annual KISS competition, which is open to film entries from all independent filmmakers living in Kam-loops and the surrounding region of Interior BC as part of its mission to support and encourage lo-cal filmmaking.

Shoes bound for Nicaragua go directly to people in needKay Bingham elementary School is spearhead-

ing a colossal shoe drive, that began on Monday, May 14 and runs through to Friday, June 15. All of the shoes collected will go directly to people in need in Nicaragua.

Students have been learning about a small com-munity in Nicaragua and gaining an understand-ing of challenges that face these citizens each day. The small village of Jiquillilo has been ravaged by

civil war, decimated by a tsunami, and plagued by extreme poverty. It is the students’ hope to make a change in the world and deliver much needed shoes to those in need. All of the shoe donations will be personally delivered by members of the Kamloops community bound for Nicaragua.

Kay Bingham elementary will be making their drive for shoe donations as public as they can and would definitely appreciate your support! Please

individually network with people you know and donate as many shoes as you can get your hands on. Make this a huge success for Kay Bingham elementary School and Nicaragua!

Shoe Drop Off for the general public will be at Kay Bingham elementary, 950 Southill Street, next to the road, at the end of the large field with no playground equipment. Donations accepted between 9am and 1pm on school days.

The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Kamloops and Area Chapter has invited the National CCSVI (Chronic Cerebro Spinal Ve-nous Insufficiency) Society to host a CCSVI in-formation session in Kamloops, BC. This infor-mative afternoon session will provide patients, caregivers, and the general public with the lat-est information on CCSVI and its relationship to Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological diseases.

CCSVI describes a theory in which portions of the venous system (the body’s network of large and small veins) in the head and neck are narrowed or blocked and therefore unable to ef-ficiently remove blood from the brain and spi-nal cord (central nervous system). The term was coined by Dr. Paolo Zamboni. following find-ings about an apparent association between CC-

SVI and MS in June 2008, following a study of 65 patients.

NCS Board members will present current CC-SVI research. The speakers will also be avail-able for questions and answers following their panel presentations.

Admission is by donation to the Kamloops and Area Chapter at the door; however, we re-quest attendees pre-register for this event as there is limited seating.

The session will be held at the Desert Gardens Community Centre, 540 Seymour Street in Ka-mloops. This location is fully accessible and has plenty of parking. Refreshments will be served.

For more information about the local Kam-loops and Area Chapter, or to register for this event call 250-314-0773 or email [email protected].

To BC Salmon Farmers Association

A few weeks ago I saw you respond negatively to a letter asking for inde-pendent testing of your farmed salm-on. Now 2 of your farms have tested positive for the highly contagious IHN virus, resulting in the ordered killing of your stocks. Without any proof you place the blame of your outbreaks entirely on wild fish, while deceptively proclaiming IHN won’t harm wild salmon. Those studies you

quote were done on adult salmon, yet you don’t mention numerous studies showing IHN to be deadly to juvenile wild salmon, you know, the innocent ones now swimming past your filthy infected farms. While worlds lead-ing labs are confirming a myriad of “european strain” diseases from store bought BC farmed salmon, you not only deny those findings as well, but arrogantly still refuse independent testing! This has many of us ques-tioning your ethics or lack thereof.

Since your main argument with inde-pendent lab results is about “foul play” or “contamination” why don’t you accompany your fish to the lab, just to make sure there’s no hanky panky going on? If your fish are as squeaky clean as you claim then there should be no problem. The public and wild salmon deserve to know!

BlsC founder wins national award Dr. Gordon Gore, a well-

known local educator, author and founder of the very popu-lar Big Little Science Centre on Holt Avenue, has received the Natural Sciences and engineering Research Council of Canada “NSeRC Awards for Science Promotion”. The annual award honours individuals who make out-standing contributions to the promotion of science in Canada, encouraging popu-lar interest in science or developing science abilities. This is one of many hon-ours given to this distin-guished educator. He is a prior recipient of an award of BC Science Teacher of the Year, the Science Teachers’ Distinguished Service Award and the BC Association of Physics Teachers Lifetime Award. In addition he has received the BC Lieutenant Governor’s Award, the Order of British Columbia and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Thompson Rivers University in 2007. Dr. Gore obtained a B.Sc. in chemis-try and physics from McGill University and a M.ed. degree from UBC. Until his retire-ment he taught in BC, most-ly in the Kamloops area, at high school and college level. His philosophy of a ‘hands-on’ approach as the most effective way of teaching and education of students, led to the formation of the Big Little Science Centre in 2000. This is an important and popular educational resource and tour-ist destination in the Southern Interior and Dr. Gore is still a primary contributor to its programmes.

NORTH SHORe eCHO May 30, 2012 n 5 Business profile

After 40 years in the same location, 228 Tran-quille Road, Robo Car Wash is a fixture on the North Shore.

The business was start-ed in the early 70’s by a group of business men from Kelowna. At that time, the business was a Texaco franchise and the automatic car wash used original touchless technol-ogy out of the U.S.

Current owner Rob Phillips bought the busi-ness in1980. The wash was converted to a hand wash soon after opening. Rob remarks “In Cana-da, our cars are subject to harsher conditions than the southern states where the original car wash equipment was effective in getting cars clean. We have more than thin coat-ings of dust or dirt to deal with. The touchless tech-nology in the 70’s was not advanced enough to get our vehicles clean enough, to really clean your car you need to gen-tly add some friction to the process”.

When considering the goal of long term paint and trim preservation with our freezing Cana-dian winters and blistering

summers, your car is there for you during the best and worst weather so show-ing it some appreciation and giving it the recogni-tion and love it deserves is easy at Robo Car Wash. In addition to the car wash and vacuums for your use, their team also offers inte-rior cleaning, and exterior waxing so your car can shine inside and out. For 24 hour convenience use their touchless car wash or one of their 5 U-do bays.

Robo Car Wash is an independent esso service station offering both full and self service and is one of the only stations on the North Shore provid-ing Superior propane fuel to their customers, fill-

ing both automobile and barbeque cylinders. They also sell and refill propane tanks. The gas station and car wash are open 7 days a week so taking care of your vehicle couldn’t be more convenient. Full ser-vice at the pump means they will fill up your tank, check the fluids, pump up your tires and clean your windows before you get motoring.

This convenience is complimented by their store open 24/7 and SO espresso & Bistro, a ser-vice that brings many pay-at-the-pump motorists in-side. You can stop in and grab a coffee, sit down to a great breakfast or en-joy a fresh sandwich with

hearty soup served by their friendly employees who are doing their best to make sure your experi-ence is a good one.

Brenda Brookbank, Store Manager shares that they currently have a team of 40-45 staff members and over the years they have employed a lot of lo-cal youth. Some of these former employees are now customers. The ma-jority of their customers are regulars and the team really gets to know them personally. This is what sets Robo apart.

Stop in and give your vehicle the pampering it deserves, with the conve-nience you deserve. Hap-py motoring!

An outdoor concert Sunday June 10, at 2:00 PM will feature Vancouver Island roots music supergroup Three Worlds, an interpretive blend of eastern, Latin Jazz, Blues, African, Pan-Asian, and Celtic Folk influ-ences. The concert will be held next to the Tranquille Farm Fresh market at Tranquille on the Lake. Doors open at 1:30 and tickets are $10 cash at the gate. This is the first public event at the restored historic areas at Tranquille on the Lake and entertainment Manage-ment is thrilled to be producing the concert.

Collectively, Three Worlds has over 100 years of performing experience, has produced over twenty-five albums with a million copies sold worldwide and has earned a number of Juno and Western Cana-dian Music Award nominations. Comprised of award-winning guitarist Brad Prevedoros, acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Greg Joy, and percussion master Niel Golden, their collectively created debut album was re-leased in the fall of 2011 and features the trio’s own in-terpretive blend of eastern, Latin Jazz, Blues, African, Pan-Asian, and Celtic Folk influences.

Percussionist Niel Golden specializes on the tab-la (Indian hand drums) and is known for his mas-

terful interpretation of Indian classical music, blues and other world music styles. Niel also performs and composes on the new and elusive Hang (pronounced Hung), a flying sauceresque instrument from Swit-zerland invented in the year 2000. Greg Joy brings a fusion of celtic, baroque, and folk-rock to the mix through his mastery of the hammered dulcimer, flute and guitar. Guitarist Brad Prevedoros, renowned for his instrumental virtuosity and exuberant live perfor-mances, brings the latin, jazz and flamenco element to this shared musical adventure that is grounded in many traditions and yet, brand new.

Government invests in Seniors’ projects throughout our region

Seniors across the nation will soon have new opportunities to volunteer, mentor younger generations and help raise awareness of elder abuse thanks to funding through the New Horizons for Seniors Program.

Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops Thompson Cariboo made the announcement that seven New Horizons for Seniors programs will begin throughout the riding for a total of $134,142. McLeod made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finely, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, and the Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors).

“Our government recognizes the diversity of skills, knowledge and experience that seniors contribute to our society and the econo-my,” said McLeod. “Through initiatives such as the New Horizons for Seniors, we are helping to ensure that seniors maintain a high quality of life and continue as active, participating members of their communities.”

Projects in the Kamloops region include: “Elders Tanning our Hides Program” at the Interior Indian Friendship Centre, in which seniors will engage in mentoring others in their community by teaching youth the skills of hide tanning.

“Secwepemc Elders & Youth Cultural Mentoring Initiative” sponsored by the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council. Seniors will vol-unteer as mentors to youth within the Secwepemc community by elders teaching traditions and culture to the youth and community members.

Renovations and improvements to the Maple Room at the North Shore Community Centre. The organization will renovate their kitchen and appliances to continue to support social participation and inclusion of seniors with dinners, exercises, and educational workshops.

“Storytelling / Legacy Book:Transferring Traditional Knowledge Through Sharing Memories Project” sponsored by the Secwepemc Cultural Education Society. The organization will engage seniors in the community by facilitating with band elders to mentor youth in cultural activities and the production of a legacy book.

new computer woesGerrad bought a computer, even

though he had never even used a typewriter before. After investi-gating the computer, he decided to call the help line. A friendly voice explained step by step how his new machine worked. All went well until the voice told him to press the space bar. After studying the keyboard, Gerrad said; “I’ve got the latest model and it doesn’t have a space bar.” But after further explanation, he managed to find it.

A week later, Gerrad again had problems and called the help line. An instructor was then sent to his house for training. After a few minutes, Gerrad’s head was spinning. “You don’t need to go any further,” he sighed, I don’t understand a thing.”

To cheer him up, the instructor said: “Hey, there are people who understand a lot less than you. Last week we had someone on the phone who didn’t even know where the space bar was!”

Air Bud on Netflix sounded exciting in theory.

YOur HOrOSCOpEGEMINI (May 22-June 21) You can make favorable changes in your home environment. Don’t promise to deliver the goods if you aren’t positive that you can meet the deadline. Take part in stimulating debates that will allow you to show off your intelligence. Relation-ships will be erratic this week.CANCER (June 22-July 22) Difficulties with older females in your family may turn out to be quit trivial after all. Don’t be too quick to judge. Catch up on correspondence. Get together with friends for some competitive physical activities.LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Romantic opportunities are evident if you get involved in large groups or organizations. Get involved in groups that can offer intellectual stimulation. Don’t let anyone take credit for a job you did. Travel will be favorable. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sept 23) Put your thoughts into action. One-sided relationships are likely. Be discreet about your feelings, and hold back until you find out a little more about the person who’s coming on to you. Financial gains can be made.LIBRA (Sept 24-Oct 23) Travel may be confusing. You may want to take a look at your direction in life. Your personal life will be dis-rupted if you have been too busy with business. Arguing won’t help.SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) Chances are they are jealous. Stand up and propose your ideas, and you’ll be surprised how many people will follow you. Overindulgence may be a problem. You may get upset with peers or relatives.SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) You are able to make changes in your home that will be favorable to all involved. Your magnetic, out-going personality will capture hearts. Join groups of a humanitarian nature. Business and emotional partnerships will run smoothly..CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) You can make money if you pursue your own business. Be aggressive and colorful, and you will get your way. You will be subject to pushy individuals if you get involved in uncertain organizations. Try not to take everything so seriously. AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) Someone you work with may be try-ing to make you look bad. Get some sound advice and help setting up a workable budget. You can mesmerize anyone you meet with your cultured attitude and outlook. Look into making changes to your per-sonal papers and don’t neglect those bills that have been piling up.PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) You’ve been hurt before and could be again if you don’t play hard to get. Plan to get together with someone special later in the day. It’s time you let your true feelings out. Your personal situation is fluctuating.ARIES (Mar 21-April 20) You may be emotional if you allow your lover to take advantage of your good nature. You may find that getting together with colleagues after hours will be worthwhile. Be prepared to deal with groups and organizations of greater magnitude. Sudden changes regarding work and colleagues are apparent.TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Your emotional reaction will be depen-dent upon your partner’s responsiveness. You could have trouble per-suading others to accept your ideas and opinions. Having your own business is a good idea.
