So Rebecca and I rotate each evening as to who puts down our daughter to sleep. Tonight, I get to have some time to myself while Rebecca hangs out with Alex for the next thirty-sixty minutes. Alexandria’s sleep patterns have shifted from the day she was born to when she learned to walk, now to that she knows the ins and outs of using a toilet. As you can imagine, Mom and Dad also have varying sleep patterns too.
Nevertheless we both appreciate the time to ourselves and the gift we give to the other that allows us to be the parent our daughter needs on any particular night. Tonight, I catch the break. Rebecca is upstairs with Alex while the two of them rest and settle in for the night. At some point, Rebecca will come down-stairs and we’ll watch a favorite television show and catch up on each other’s day.
I love the sermon topic for this recently preached that calls us to color outside the lines. As parents, there is no set pattern to raising our daughter. We have goals, values, and ways that we affirm are important. But, they may different from the next set of parents who are raising their child(ren) in the way that brings a reality for them.
Jesus colored outside of the lines too. The religious figures of the day were critical about how Jesus reached out to others who needed to experience love differently than the next person. But for each, it was important. How you raise your kid(s) might be different than how I’ve raised my three kiddos (two who are now adults). But the care and love we extend is that right amount of love and attention that brings us to the end of the day when we settle down into that space that reminds us we are not alone. We come to that space where Mom or Dad (or some form of parent) has brought us to that place where we belong.

DISPLAY A CROSS IN THE SANCTUARY DURING LENT
We would like to display crosses that belong to members
of the congregation throughout the sanctuary during
Lent from Sunday, March 8th through Palm Sunday, April
5th. If you have a cross that has its own stand or is on its
own pedestal that you would like to share in this way, please be sure to
label it with your name and drop it off during office hours in the church
office or bring it to church with you on Sunday. We are unable to use
crosses that need to be hung on a wall. The deadline for bringing them in
is this Tuesday, March 5th. If you have any questions, please contact
the office.
EASTER LILIES OR FLOWERING PLANTS
Help decorate our sanctuary on Easter Sunday with beautiful lilies and flowering plants Sunday.
You can purchase a lily or flowering plant in memory or in honor of a loved one. Beginning March 22nd, an envelope will be included in the bulletin to use for your donation. The cost is $10 per designated plant or lily. Payment is re-quested in advance. Payment may be by cash or checks payable to NSUMC, marked “LILIES”. You can place it in the offering plate or return it to the church office no later than Tuesday, April 7th.

WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY
Coming up March 4th through April 8th our Wednesday morning group will be studying “The Walk” by Adam Hamilton.
In The Walk, Adam Hamilton fo-cuses on five essential spiritual practices that are rooted in Je-sus’ own walk with God and
taught throughout the New Testament. Each of these practices is intended as part of our daily walk with Christ while also being an essential part of growing together in the church.

Easter Food & Clothing Drive

The ICM Easter Food & Clothing Drive, benefiting families in need at ICM Food & Clothing Bank, will begin on Sunday March 15 and go through Sunday March 29.
Collection bins for your donations will be in the Narthex.
There will be a list of suggested food and clothing items needed attached to the front of the bins. If you have any questions, please call the church office at 480-948-0529.

Bible discovery, Pre-K leaders, puppetry and drama. We also need volunteers to shuttle children from station to station. These positions are available daily or for the en-tire week. Bakers- We need a few bakers to supply our volunteer leaders with daily snacks (fruits and veggies are also wel-come). These volunteer youth leaders so appreciate the daily treats for “Leader Lounge.” It would be awesome if we could have four dozen items daily. Communion Milestone
Thank you to our first, second and third grade Sunday School classroom for sharing their “Communion Mile-stone” with us on Sunday, Feb 16th. The Sunday School teachers taught the children about the meaning of com-munion to help the students better understand a very im-portant part of the worship service. The children have lis-tened to the story of The Good Shepherd and Worldwide Communion and reflected on the idea that when we par-ticipate in communion we experience connection to peo-ple all over the world, to those who came before us, to those who are with us now, and to those who are yet to come.
Thank you to our Sunday School Teachers Carol Cham-berlin, Bev Blew, Susan Smith and Olivia Johnson for their dedication to our children every Sunday!
After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take
this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of
the vine until the kingdom of God comes." 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and
gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me."
VBS DONATIONS & VOLUNTEERS are INVITED
North Scottsdale United Methodist Church’s 2020 summer day camp is entitled “Knights of the North Castle.” This camp adventure will be held Monday, June 15 through Friday, June 19, 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at NSUMC. It is open to all children ages three through twelve. The re-quested donation is $45 per child for the entire week’s program. At “Knights of the North Castle” kids will discover how to serve others and share God’s love in this world. They will go on a quest in search of inner strength. This day camp offers energizing music, interactive bible puppetry, super science experiments, creative crafts, hands-on mission work, yummy snacks, and active games that are out-of-this-world! There will also be a 14’ waterslide for the campers to enjoy on Friday!

Lord’s Prayer Milestone
On Sunday, March 22nd, our preschool and kin-
dergarten class will be celebrating their Lord’s Pray-
er Milestone during our 10am service. The Sunday

School teachers have been working with the chil-
dren to help them learn this very important prayer. It
is a prayer that expresses God’s desire to have an
ongoing relationship with us. Parent’s please mark
your calendar for this celebration!! All participants
will receive a gift.
MANY, MANY THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO HELPED TO MAKE OUR ANNUAL MARDI GRAS SUCH A SUC-CESS! The celebration began during the 10:00am service with reflective prayer and sermon for the Lenten Season. We exited the service with the merriment of a New Orleans Jazz band to Fellowship Hall for a free luncheon. After the opening reflection attendees enjoyed jazz music and a traditional New Orleans’s meal of homemade gum-bo, rice, French bread, coleslaw, Cajun chicken (catered by Popeye’s) and King’s cake shipped direct from Haydel’s Bakery in New Orleans, Louisiana. A very spe-cial THANKYOU to Michael Caplan and his cooking "Krewe" for making the delicious Gumbo. An amazing time was had by all who attended!

Scouting Sunday Thank YOU!
Thank you to the scouts and leaders that joined us on Scouting Sunday to celebrate your hard work! We were so honored that you attended! The scouting organiza-tions do such a fabulous job of imparting knowledge on the children and youth. Their leaders offer amazing dedi-cation and leadership to all of these scouts.
Equally proud of how many congregation members stood up during the service to show their participation in scout-ing (as a scout and/or a leader) when they were younger.
VBS Volunteer Meeting Dates
It’s that time of year again, when we begin to plan for our “Knights of the North Castle” VBS Day Camp. This fun-packed camp will be held Monday, June 15th through Friday, June 19th, 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at NSUMC. At ”Knights of North Castle" VBS Day-Camp 2020, children will go on a quest in search of inner strength! Campers will experience scripture stories through drama, art, cooking, games, science and puppetry. There will also be a 14’ waterslide for the campers to enjoy on Friday! There are three (3) VBS volunteer meetings. We en-courage you to come to ALL MEETINGS so we can plan as a group: -Sunday, May 3rd @ 11:00am-11:30am in the Education office -Sunday, May 17th @ 11:00am-11:30am in the Education office -Sunday, June 14th @ 11:00am-1:00pm-decorate the church/pizza lunch included The curriculum and crafts are in, so if you are interested, you will be able to leave these meetings with the leader’s book for your area of interest, plus you will be able to see the crafts, and hear the songs. Again, this year we will have a pre-school classroom, so the little ones will not have to switch from station to station, but this concept re-quires more volunteers. You may volunteer one day or all five. We have many options. If you know anyone that would be interested in volunteering, please bring him or her to the meetings with you! We will meet in the Educa-tion Office (next to room #11).

Last year, Church and Society
surveyed the congregation to
determine the topics and issues
you were most interested in learning more about.
By far the topic of most interest was immigra-
tion. Over the next several months, Church and
Society will be creating an opportunity to learn
more about issues related to immigration includ-
ing written pieces, forums and opportunities to

In January, we hosted a forum to share the expe-
riences of the members of our congregation who
toured the border. We had over 50 people attend
and we think everyone learned something about
immigrants and the situation at the US/Mexico
Border. Thanks to all the presenters and to all
the attendees.
Pastor David is planning another trip to the Bor-
der. The dates and itinerary is still under discus-
sion. If you have an interest in participating in
this activity, contact Pastor David.
Our next planned activity around this topic will be
a facilitated conversation about NSUMC’s re-
sponse to immigration: Should NSUMC have a
position on immigration and, if so, what should it
be? The forum is planned for the last week in
April.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! Because of your generosity and support for our Suitcase Initiative we were able to fill and donate another 25 rolling duffels to OCJ Kids! As you may re-member these duffels are given to young people as they turn 18 and leave the foster care system. We will be filling and donating another 25 in April.
Feed My Starving Children Work Day Plan ahead and volunteer to help on Saturday, April 18th, from 11:30am to 1:30pm to pack nutri-tionally complete meals specifically designed for malnourished children. We will meet at the event….let us know when you sign up if you need to carpool. The location will be the Feed My Starv-ing Children Center, 1345 South Alma School Road, Mesa, where we were last year. Parking is availa-ble at the FSMC Center.
This event is organized by Feed My Starving Chil-dren (FMSC). Everyone is welcome! Please note that the minimum age to volunteer at FMSC is 5 yrs. old.
You must be able to work on your feet for two hours. This is a great event for families!
You can sign up at the Mission table after worship. Again, let us know when you sign up if you need to carpool. We have a reservation for 25 volunteers, but may be able to increase if necessary. Last year our Piecemakers quilters joined forces with RARE Science, Inc., a non-profit or-ganization that helps find cures for kids with rare dis-eases, and made 50 one of a kind bears for special one of a kind kids. Gifted RARE bears have a serial number specifically made for a child in our program.
There are millions of children with rare diseases. Since these diseases are not normally the focus, these children are often misdiagnosed and/or do not have medicines available for them. 30% of these children die before their 5th birthday. RARE Science believes and have already demonstrated that by em-powering Parents and Foundations with tools to navi-gate the healthcare system, build patient communities and clinical/research teams focused on these diseases, we can accelerate finding more immediate treatments.
The philosophy at RARE Science is that alone we all can make great contributions to our community but together we can make transformative change! Although all the bears will be made to specified guidelines and pattern, it is the contribution of each team members “stash” and donations that make each bear unique. Be a part of the RARE Bear Army!

HALLE WOMEN’S CENTER (operated by UMOM)
We continue to serve meals twice a month for the women who are living at the Halle Women’s Center. Note the word “living.” It is so exciting that these homeless women have a place to stay while they get their lives back in order, find a job and move to permanent housing! Our support continues to be important as they work through all the challenges they face. If you would like to make a cash donation, please put it in an envelope, mark it for this pro-ject, and drop it in the collection plate, mail it or drop it off in the church office.
BOOKS AND MAGAZINES
We are collecting books and magazines for the VA and prison libraries. Please continue to bring donations to the Mission Table in Fellowship Hall. Thanks to your dona-tions there is no cost to our Church to provide this service. Church volunteers do the work and deliver these items.
A place where our people are making a difference! Many thanks to the people who faithfully donate books and magazines to the Maricopa County jails through the church. Our gifts do not go unappreciated or unused. The church received a letter from the Library Manager for Mari-copa County’s jails thanking us for what we have given them. We have helped the inmates and help the library by allowing funds that would otherwise go towards acquisition of materials, to improve services instead.
DONATE EYE GLASSES
How many pairs of eye glasses do you have stuck in the back of a drawer? Pull them out and bring them to the Mission Table. They will be donated to the Lions Vision Program in honor of David Walter.
VETERANS INITIATIVES
We have partnered with Veterans Court to provide Bus Pass cards and other support to provide clothes and shoes for interviews. We also support the Operation StandDown effort for Veterans each year.
MORE MISSION NEWS
We will begin making a $200 per month donation for one year to the Justa Center to support their mission with homeless elderly members of the Phoenix communi-ty. We will support the Center for one year, and then con-sider what to do after that, i.e., to continue the support, change it, stop it, etc.
We are also supporting the ElderTLC project, which oper-ates here in north Scottsdale and provides gifts for low-income residents in senior care facilities in the Phoenix and outlying areas. ElderTLC believes that a gift such as a blanket, clothing, personal care items, or a baby doll (for
memory care) reminds seniors that their community cares. They are expecting to distribute over 3500 gifts and NEED OUR HELP.

SAVE YOUR COUPONS….
The Missions Committee has agreed to support a non-profit called Coupons for Heroes which sends
MANUFACTURER coupons to US military bases over-seas in order to help reduce grocery costs for military families. Coupons can be clipped or left on flyers or printed off of manufacturer websites. They can also be expired up to four months. Volunteers will clip, pro-cess, and mail them overseas. A plastic container will be placed on or near the Mis-sions table in Fellowship Hall for you to deposit clipped MANUFACTURER coupons or flyers. Please NO STORE coupons. Ask at the Missions table if you have questions.
