April 24th saw the start of The Mallard St. Georges Beer Festival. With 18 beers and 3 ciders this was yet again a

very successful event for the Mallard. But the difference between this & most beer festivals is that Wayne Cadman, the host, used the event as a fundraiser for the MS Trust, a charity close to my heart as my daughter was diagnosed with MS 3 years ago.

Along with a tombola and a sale of old pump clips was a beer made for the festival & donated by our own National master brewer Colin Tweed. The Shed Brewery beer was called Shed IPA which sold out in 3 hours

on the opening evening. Many people travelled just to taste this beer but were too late. An excellent achievement by Colin yet again.

At the last Mallard beer festival, Wayne managed to raise £188 for The Alzheimer’s Society, this time however the total raised was £350. A big thank you Wayne and Mel, Colin and all that came to sample the excellent beers on offer once again.

On Saturday 31st May six of us ventured into Doncaster. John, Mike and Terry from Worksop, Steve and Mike from

Retford and Paul from Lincoln. We made our way to Doncaster mainly by service bus and bus passes.

Our fi rst port of call was the Corner Pin, Doncaster CAMRA’s Pub Of The Year 2014 and 2011, runner up 2010 and Spring Pub of the Season 2010, we were made very welcome by the landlady Ruth.

The pub has Casque Marque Excellence and offers CAMRA members 10% off Real Ale. Beers on sale included Northumberland Main Seam Mild, Original Northumberland Ale, Geeves No.1, York Brewery Guzzler and Doncaster Cheswold.

They have an annual beer festival during January / February and usually feature 10 ales. The pub is also renowned to have the best chips in Doncaster.

After quaffi ng approximately 3 pints we ventured to the... Doncaster Brewery Tap on Young Street, where

we were made most welcome by the landlord and Brewer Ian Blaylock and his wife Allison.

The pub opened January this year and is highly recommended, brewing from the premises will commence in the very near future. An offi cial opening along with a beer festival is planned once the brewery is up and running at the pub.

There were fi ve Doncaster Brewery Beers on sale plus three Guests also a draught Perry and Cider and a range of other ciders by tap from polypins as well as a range of bottled beers.

The Regular Tap Ale is “Gold Cup” a 4.5% Golden Cask Ale, only normally available elsewhere from the end of August to the beginning of October for the Leger Festival.

All the beers were in excellent condition and we sampled quite a few of them.

While we were there Ian the landlord was doing a radio interview with Andrew Lloyd of Sine FM for the Food Show which can be heard Fridays 2pm to 3pm, our Chairman Steve and a number of us were also interviewed for the show. A great pub well worth a visit.

Next on our travels was Cask

Corner, featuring 10 Real Ales, the Treasons Stout from Great Heck Brewery was in excellent form.

A very popular pub with real ale drinkers. Also features a very busy pool table.

As time was now getting on we ventured to the Little Plough, a favourite with Acorn Brewery Barnsley Bitter drinkers, in excellent condition, Bradfi eld Farmers Blonde also very popular.

A very busy pub featuring TV for sports enthusiasts and a range of three good real ales.

Directly next door we went into the Tut n Shive pub featuring fi ve real ales, the pub was very busy, a good atmosphere and a strong sports following and a strong value for money food menu.

Around 5.30 to 6pm we caught our various buses to Worksop and Retford and our Sec Paul dashed for the train to Lincoln.

A few of us carried on in various drinking establishments in Worksop and Retford to end what had been a great day out.

Some time ago, various CAMRA publications posted a request for information about the WRB, taken over

by Tennents in 1958 and demolished in 1962. Thanks for all information which arrived.

Visits we also made to archives in both Nottingham and Sheffi eld, Bassetlaw Museum in Retford, the Dukeries, the National Brewery Centre in Burton-on-Trent and, of course, Worksop itself.

The Worksop and Retford Brewery was a large employer and landmark enterprise for the whole of Bassetlaw. Worksop malt was critical to the success of brewing operations in Manchester and the Midlands. Victorian photographs provide an indication of the sheer size of the operation. Ornate wrought iron gates opened out onto a large eye-catching and decorative fi ve storey building, built from bricks of different colour in a style in favour at the time.

After almost four years, publication has fi nally happened. The almost forgotten story of what was once one of the towns foremost industries tells a story of a brewery that was both typical of many regional, independent breweries, and yet also unique in its creative use of marketing and iconography.

The illustrated publication is richly anecdotal and will be of nterest to anyone interested in either Worksop and its history, or with a passing interest in beer and brewing. It also provides the historical backdrop for the novel, ‘Beer, Balls and the Belgian Mafi a.’

The book is currently available on Amazon Kindle for ‘only’ £1.53, much less than the price of a pint of beer (unless it’s Sam Smiths) To buy, visit http://tinyurl.com/ptakjfm or http://www.amazon.co.uk/ then search using ‘beer Worksop’.

In addition, on Saturday, 17th May 2014, (1.30 pm -2.30 pm), Bassetlaw Museum, are hosting a presentation form the authors. Entry is free, but places need to be booked with the Museum.
