Nurse's Notes04/12/2019by Martha Covrig

NURSE’S NOTES NURSE’S NOTES NURSE’S NOTES NURSE’S NOTES

Eyes are an important part of your child’s health and good vision is one key to success in school. Vision

screening is done annually at school in Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th and 8th grade by the Oregon Lion’s Sightand Hearing Foundation (OLSHF) screening team. OLSHF uses a quick screening tool called a Spot VisionScreener. If students miss the mass screening or are in other grades and have signs and symptoms of visionproblems they may be screened by the district nurse on request. Symptoms of vision problems could be anyof the following (but are not limited to): blurry vision, haziness, squinting, headaches, or eye strain. There aremany things you can do to keep them healthy and make sure they are seeing their best. If a student hasbeen prescribed glasses or contacts, wearing them as prescribed is important. Sometimes eye patching isordered for some of our younger students. This is especially important and can prevent permanent visionloss. This web site has some good advice for healthy vision: http://www.webmd.com/eye-health/good-eyesight If your child is having trouble with their vision and you don’t have access to vision insurance/carelet your school know. Your child may qualify for a number of resources that I could share with you. Contactme through your child’s school office.

What are the best incentives for students?04/12/2019by North staffer

What are the best incentives for students, and when should we let our kids fail?

Some parents give kids an amount of money for each “A” earned, less for a “B," etc. That's an example ofextrinsic motivation, just like giving fish to a seal to do tricks— and it’s pretty good for the short-term,(although it can get expensive). But District 7’s mission as well as many parents— is to develop studentswho will be intrinsically-motivated learners over the long-term. How does a school manage to do that withoutthe incentive of money? Teachers focus on helping a child to understand that with every skill that theymaster, they are growing into adulthood: more brilliant with each passing day; more ready to succeed in thenext grade, high school; college; their first job; service to their community— wherever their life takes them!

So how do I motivate my child who diligently completed last night’s practice assignment, but accidentally leftit on the coffee table? My initial reaction is to grab it, snatch the keys, and head for the car, to bring it to themat school to save my child from a failing grade, loss of recess, or perhaps a preferred activity time... But as Ireflected on the situation, my thoughts changed. Taking the homework would not help my student to faceconsequences for not properly packing for the day; consequences that would be part of holding a job in thefuture... It wouldn’t force them to troubleshoot so that their lack of organization wouldn’t surface again _next_time. It won’t prepare them to be a lifelong, intrinsically-motivated learner! On the flip-side, letting my childsuffer the consequences in the short-term leaves me safe in the knowledge that between my discussion withthem, as well as that of the teacher, together we’ll develop a mature, responsible citizen in the long-term!
