Roger, who will appear at the Howard Assembly Room on 21st March, is well known as the pre-senter of Poetry Please on BBC Radio 4. He was recently honoured with a CBE for services to literature and the Freedom of the City of Liv-erpool for good behavior! His new book of poems ‘As Far As I Know’ is both hilarious and surreal.

08 LIFE AND STYLE
Louis’ connection with Leeds came about when he befriended a young Eng-lishman in Paris – John Whitley, who like Louis had studied sciences at the University of Leipzig, and shared his fascination with current scientific and technical advances. Louis originated from Metz, northeast France, where his father was an army major, and a friend of the pioneer photographer Daguerre – photography was an early interest. John Whitley’s father, Joseph, ran a brass foundry in Hunslet, Leeds, and was an enthusiast for technical innovation and development.

THEY LIVED IN LEEDSLOUIS AIMÉ AUGUSTIN LE PRINCE 1841-1890
Artist, Iventor, Film Pioneer
By Eveleigh Bradford
ON A BRIGHT DAY IN OCTOBER 1888, A SUBURBAN GARDEN IN ROUNDHAY BECAME THE SETTING FOR A PIECE OF MOVIE HISTORY. LOUIS LE PRINCE CARRIED HIS HEAVY PROTOTYPE CAMERA OUT OF HIS IN-LAWS’ HOUSE, OAKWOOD GRANGE, AND ASKED FOUR OF HIS FAMILY TO WALK ROUND THE GARDEN WHILE HE FILMED THEM. ALTHOUGH ONLY SECONDS SURVIVE, THEIR IMAGES WERE CAPTURED FOR EVER IN WHAT HAS BECOME KNOWN AS THE ROUNDHAY GARDEN SCENE, GENERALLY ACKNOWLEDGED AS THE FIRST MOVING PICTURE. LOUIS LE PRINCE WAS TO BECOME FAMOUS AS THE FATHER OF CINEMATOGRAPHY – AND AS THE MAN WHO DISAPPEARED.

“I wanted to have a beer that was unique to the pub”, said Myrtle manager Scott West-lake. “Many breweries rebrand their beer for pubs but it is purely imitation. I approached Simon Bolderson at Ridgeside and we discussed barrelage. We felt con-fident that Simon could produce a unique beer and I could sell enough of it to warrant brewing it. What he has come up with is a pale session ale at 4% ABV – Ridgesides only 4% beer – and we decided to name it Myrtale.”

If the ground is frozen but not snow covered, and you’re not able to keep on top of the weeds, you can spread well-rotted manure and compost as another way of suppress-ing weeds. Brush snow off small trees and shrubs to stop damage and break-ing branches. If the weather is just too cold or wet to venture out, this is a good time to start planning for the rest of the year. It’s not too soon to start sowing early crops but these do need some heat, start to chit early potatoes even if you are only growing in large pots or tubs. Check any pots of forced bulbs for growth and bring them into the light if you haven’t already done so.

HOPEFULLY THE WEATHER WILL BE KIND AND THERE ARE SOME DAYS WHEN WE CAN SPEND AN HOUR OR TWO IN THE GARDEN. TAKE A WALK AROUND BUT, IF THERE IS FROST AND SNOW, KEEP OFF GRASSY AREAS. WHERE POSSIBLE, PICK A STEM OR TWO OF SWEET SMELLING SHRUBS FOR THE HOUSE, LOOK OUT FOR THE FIRST SNOWDROPS PLUS THE BUDS OF HELLIBORES AND ACONITES.

ALBUM LAUNCH DAN BEESLEY & THE S.S.S.S.S. Get Romantic
The release of this superb album was celebrated with a barnstorm-ing gig at Sela, which saw the band on cracking form. Having seen members of the S.S.S.S.S. play with other combos in the past, I knew to expect something special but I was absolutely floored by a faultlessly performed set of blistering, vigor-ous Blues-infused Rock ‘n’ Roll par excellence.

ith the New Year comes the inevitable vow to get fit, lose weight and start caring about our health. Expensive gym memberships are bought and by March, they’re a distant memory. ‘I’ll go tomorrow’ turns into next week and so on, until all healthy intentions have become drowned in a world of ‘too busy.’ So how do we break the cycle?

Worn Out? Tired?Worried About Falling?Would you turn the clock back 10 years if you could? Would you do it today?
I’m Jason and this is my friend Joan, 83. She limped round Meanwood with a stick, exercise was painful and she couldn’t get up if she fell down. Joan’s social scene was suffering and her body couldn’t keep up with her busy life. Joan had an epiphany one day and swore she’d take action to improve her quality of life. She began learning TaiChi at Meanwood’s Temple Holistic Centre in May 2011.
18 months later, Joan has turned the clock back 10 years. She has better balance, her health and her memory have dramatically improved and she loves life again. She is also half way to winning the legendary Black Sash!To discover the secret to renewing your energy and restoring your youth like Joan, switch off the telly and join us. You’ll turn your biological clock back 10 years and live life on YOUR terms again.
“You are never too old or too young, too healthy or too sick, too fat or too thin to do TaiChi”
We’re enrolling just 12 new students in January so don’t miss out, take action now!
Give it a whirl for nothing…Call 01133 19422 and quote ‘fountain of youth’ to book your FREE, no obligation masterclass today

Exclusive and Specialist weight loss programmeAre you keen on losing weight permanently?
Do you want to be fit and healthy for life?
Do you want to be able to wear anything you want and feel confident?
Do you need help managing weight related medical problems?
Have you lost weight with dieting and put it back?
If you answered YES to any of the above questions, you need to read this…
Why do all my diets fail? Most diet plans fail in the long term. This is because your body learns to conserve energy with significant calorie restriction. Most diets are low in calories or they may place emphasis on a certain food type. For example, it may be a low carbohydrate or high protein diet. Some fad diets which are not evidence based can be harmful to your body. Most diets are based on the concept of reducing total calorie intake and suppressing your appetite to make you feel full. This approach may not be suitable for you and even if you are successful, you may not be able to maintain your weight loss. Some diets can be so dangerous that they could irreversibly damage your health.
One size does NOT fit all! Each one of us has a different physical, psychological, genetic and hormonal make up. We think differently, feel different, have different metabolic rates and have different hunger patterns. This is why we do not benefit from diet plans and weight loss programs. They are not designed for your body. A plan which helps someone to lose weight may not always be beneficial; even if it does help, it is not for long.
So what’s the solution?A weight loss programme should be personalised to your emotional, social, hormonal and psychological needs. It’s important to remember that weight loss is only one factor in your journey to gaining health. You also need to be happy, confident, successful and have a high self esteem. With weight loss your medical problems associated with body weight should improve. Conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, poor mobility and infertility should get better and in some cases be completed resolved.
Why are we different? We are a specialist team of Consultant Physicians, Specialist Dietitians, Bariatric Surgeons, Clinical Psychologists, Obesity Physiotherapists, Expert Patients and Fitness Experts. We provide comprehensive care with the aim of helping you lose weight and maintain it for life without surgery. We thoroughly analyse your medical and psychological state before providing you a personalised programme with long term support.

THE WOMAN BEHIND JESSICA ENNISBEHIND EVERY GREAT ATHLETE IS A TRUSTED PHYSIO
IN SPORT, WE TEND TO HEAR ABOUT PHYSIOTHERAPISTS WHEN ATHLETES ARE INJURED – VITAL AS THEIR INPUT IS THEN, THEIR REAL ROLE IS ACTUALLY ENSURING THAT THEIR ATHLETES REMAIN INJURY FREE. THEY ARE THE ‘MECHANICS’ BEHIND THE SCENES! LITTLE DID WE REALISE IT, BUT WE HAVE A ‘HOT’ TEAM OF PHYSIOS RIGHT HERE IN LEEDS WHO HAVE COME INTO THEIR OWN OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS.
