Club Captain’s Report

With the two major Club events, Awards Dinner and AGM behind us we can now concentrate our efforts on

planning events for the new Club year. Welcome aboard to new committee members Maxine & Robert

Steele (Secretaries), Karen Thomas (Newsletter Editor) and David Heilbron (Committee).

Thank you to a few of our North Shore members braving the weather to venture out and display their

vehicles in Birkenhead for the Auckland Heritage Festival. Many children were thrilled to sit in a vintage car

sounding off the horn, Ahoooga. Rumour has it the following weekend your Club Captain and his First Lady

were spotted at Silverdale outside the Big Red building. Dressed in period costume showing off a rather

nice maroon Fordor Sedan we handed out flyers promoting the Silverdale Pioneer Village Open Day, also

part of the Auckland Heritage Festival. Our flyers proved successful in attracting some of the first visitors to

the Village. All in all, the Club members supported the Festivals and generated interest in the A’s and the

Club. Helping the communities thrive.

I hope to bring some warmer settled weather back from Australia this month as Kay and I are taking a break

on the Gold Coast. I remind you of our Tech Night at Restoration and Panel Wairau Valley on Wednesday 9

November. We will look at Model A Ford restoration work along with other vehicles in the workshop for

repair. Proprietor Steve Simpson is retiring early next year, so this will be a good opportunity to see a

restoration panel shop in operation. Also do not forget our Christmas Party Sunday 27 November at

Auckland Botanic Gardens. Christmas is not far away.

Hi there Model A folk

The role of secretary was available at the AGM and after discussion with Jenny Levinson (who was no longer in a position to carry out this role) a decision was made by Maxine and myself to give it a go. Reading through the notes made by Jenny and prior to her, Karen, finds that we have big jandals (summer is coming) to fill. In the following months I will endeavour to keep Club members informed via the monthly newsletter regards the main points raised at the committee meetings. This will ensure Club members know what is going on and no surprises are sprung. The main focus of the October meeting was -

The obligation of the Club to the new health and safety act, and what we as a Club, and as

individual members at Club meetings, need to do to ensure we are complying in a sensible manner.

The question of liability insurance was raised and further follow up is required to understand just

what liability the Club could be exposed to and how the ongoing cost of insurance would be of

benefit.

Long term, planning of events for the calendar year was undertaken.

Discussion regards the layout of the monthly newsletter with ideas and thoughts from Karen were

discussed. Robert Steele, Secretary

Hello Fellow Model A’ers

Invoices for 2016/17 subscription renewals have been sent out – many thanks to all those who have already sent payment. Your invoice also shows your Model A(s) recorded in the Club’s database. It’s always good to know our Club info is current, so be sure to let me know if this needs updating. By the time you read this (or not read it, as I hear some only read the tech stuff), Christmas will be less than two months away. Late October I’m again helping to install the wonderful animated Christmas windows in Smith & Caughey’s department store, on Auckland’s Queen Street. Try to find time to check it out before Christmas. And if you have young children/grandchildren, don’t miss the Enchanted Forest and chance to meet Santa (top floor …book ahead online). For out-of-towners, the 27 November Club Christmas Party is an ideal time.

Quick question. Heard of ModelAosis? It’s a strange and recurring affliction affecting many 1000’s of people around the world. And that includes you and me! Aren’t we lucky!

Model A regards,

Ralph Levinson, Treasurer/Memberships

Editor’s Comment - Wow what a challenge! Thank you for electing me as your

new Editor, I will assume this challenge with all good intentions hopefully with not too many hiccups. When I was first approached about undertaking this role my immediate thought was - no way! After discussing it with my family the idea didn’t sound that bad after all so here I am ready to give it a go. Please be patient this is a new avenue for me but I will get there. In my experiences I have noted that a newsletter in any Club is the bringing together of people from all walks of life and sharing their experiences with what we all have in common, in this case the Model A. I remind us all that the purpose of our Club is to enjoy, restore, preserve and protect the Model A Ford Automobile and to foster a spirit of good fellowship and family participation through the use of the Model A Ford. I will endeavour to do this through the newsletter but I do need your HELP. If you have had any experiences with your Model A, no matter how big or small, share them with us all. I will print your stories for other Club members to read and together we will ensure the good spirit of the Club remains. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to contribute any articles - this is your Club and your contribution is valued. I hope you enjoy my first newsletter as much as I have enjoyed putting it together. Happy motoring – Karen

Heritage Festival – Birkenhead Auckland Saturday 01 October - Rob Brown

Watch out everyone! I have to make the most of this. Page 4

During the Auckland Heritage Festival our Club was asked to provide some cars for display at the Birkenhead shopping centre. Six local cars paraded through the main streets and parked outside the library beside the jazz band. Our Captain and Kay helped set the scene by dancing in era costume to the toe tapping music. Not so easy dancing on concrete we were told. The Pirongia Clydesdales were giving wagon rides throughout the day and the sound of their high stepping clippetty clop gait was almost as good as a well-tuned Model A idling at full retard. Much interest was shown in the cars by the

young, very young and older. Klaxons had a good workout and Grandson Angus had a particular interest in wheels.

AUCKLAND BOTANIC GARDENS

Sunday November 27 – 10.30-11.00am

Logan Campbell Building 102 Hill Road, Manurewa

This year the committee have decided to try something different by holding the Christmas Party at the beautiful Auckland Botanic Gardens. This is 64-hectares of beautiful gardens and native forest located in Manurewa and home to more than 10,000 plants. There is something for everyone at this magical place.

The Club will supply cooked ham, chicken, cutlery, plates, napkins etc. Members with surnames beginning with A – H are requested to bring a salad while those beginning with I – Z are requested to bring a dessert. Apart from tea and coffee which will be provided everybody should bring their own drinks. Please bring along the children / grandchildren with a wrapped and named present for each child. Santa has been busy sewing his jacket in preparation for this day so do not disappoint him.

To keep your minds sharp there will be a Garden Walk Around Quiz along with prizes.

For those travelling from Auckland the gardens are located on the left hand side of Hill Road after taking the Manurewa Exit off motorway and turning left into Hill Road. For those folk travelling from the South you should take the Takanini Exit off motorway and head north on Great South Road going through Manurewa and turning right into Hill Road.

A portion of the public car park will be roped off for our use. Look for handsome club members wearing hi-viz vests to direct you to a park.

Footnote: Auckland’s Botanic Gardens have both indigenous native plants and exotic imports. The site is complemented by beautiful lakes and there is an award winning Children’s Garden. The gardens are adorned with sculptures by leading New Zealand artists. The gardens include sections devoted to threatened native plants, roses, edible plants, perennials, African plants, a rock garden, palm garden, urban trees and a Gondwana Arboretum. There is a native forest, magnolia garden, herb garden and orchards. It is a relaxing and beautiful site to enjoy. The gardens also have a mini-train, the “Wiri Rambler Train”. This takes visitors around the garden on a tour every Sunday throughout the year. Visitors can take a self-guided tour on set routes including the Native Plant Identification Trail, Permanent Sculpture Trail, Native Forest Trail, Puhinui Stream Forest Trail and the Sustainable Water Trail.

I recently discovered that an odd unknown tool that has been lurking in my tool box for years, is for fitting the early style gudgeon pin with the centre lock sprung ring when assembling rods and early split skirt pistons. It worked a treat and I am happy to lend it to club members. If you have good early pistons especially oversize and with pins don’t throw them out they might be still usable. John Castle, Life Member.

Just a reminder about the 13th National Model A Rally to be held in Napier Easter Weekend 2017. The National Rallies are held every two years and you may well remember the fun we had in Wanaka South Island last year. Presentation of Clock to NIMAFC

A unique Model A Clock, made by one of our NIMAFC members Mr Dave Williams from Onerahi Whangarei, was presented to the club at the AGM recently. Mr Williams was unable to attend but instead asked his friend Wade Alexander Alexander to make the presentation on his behalf. The clock cut out of tin in the shape of a Model A and then carefully painted painted with all the features of a Model A was gratefully This was in appreciation for the received. It is evident to see that Dave has definitely put in a lot of man l lot of manhours to create this masterpiece. Dave wanted to thank the club for their show his gratitude and fellowship towards the club. A big thank you from us all. Stephen Upson accepting the clock

SPEAKING FASHION

PEARLS – ALWAYS CORRECT (except sport of course)

Pearls, real and simulated, were very popular in the Model A era. Both were advertised in catalogues and magazines throughout our years. Pearls have been popular with notability and the upper classes for centuries, and, as I’m sure you know are still popular today. The oldest surviving necklace is 2,000 years old. They only became available to the middle and lower classes when they became artificially made. This was accomplished in 1899 by Kokichi Mikimoto in Japan. Cultured pearls, which are artificially, stimulated in a mollusc to produce, became more affordable, and became a popular import in the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Faux pearls are made of shell, coated glass and ceramic. To find out if your pearls are real, check them with your teeth. If they feel “gritty”, they are real. They feel smooth or slippery, they are not. Since they have been popular for so many years, and are still popular, the only way to tell if they are from our era is by the clasp. There were also “seed pearls”, which were very small (less than 1mm in size). These were often clustered together in a rope. The “Choker” is 14-15 inches long, the “Matinee” is 20-24 inches long, the “Opera” is 30-36 inches long, and the “Sauteur” is up to 60 inches long.

Pearls have been popular for centuries, and even today are still a favored choice of jewellery. Given a new lease of life by Chanel in the 1920s, long strands of pearls suddenly became popular once again. Pearls were not only present in necklaces, but also in brooches – sometimes incorporated with the ‘white on white’ paste style, earrings and bracelets. Pearls really are a timeless jewellery item, and can be worn in so many different ways – perhaps proving

why they are still so popular.

“MINOR IMPROVEMENTS!” written at 19th October – by Keith Humphreys

I started creating a Model A Speedster/Special six years ago when the Lancia Lambda that we owned at the time broke its crankshaft and we had to wait 18 months and some $8500 later to get one made. From past experience I knew Model A’s to be simple and robust and that new crankshafts were available off the shelf for $950. After the recent South Island jaunt, taking in the Irishman’s Rally at Fairlie, I felt that a few aspects of the car could be improved: It leaked too much oil despite modern one-piece seals front and rear. There was inadequate suspension travel. The electric fan mounts were useless. The petrol tank had cracked. Roger Anderson of Model A & T Spares, in Napier suggested that we take the motor to Graham Miller of B &H Engine Services in Palmerston North, Graham is also a Model A owner and between them they had the oil leak issues sussed. So, first it was out with the motor and a quick drive to Palmy and back to deliver the motor. Next it was body off to access the rear mounted petrol tank and off with the front and rear axles. The radiator, petrol tank and diff went to a very talented friend for remedial work and the original front axle was located in Clevedon where the chassis was fabricated. I cleaned the front axle, painted it and set about re-installing it only to discover that it was a ¼” too small at the radius arm yokes. A quick phone call assured me that it would fit and I had a pair of spacers made for that purpose. However when I came to fit the brake shafts, they simply didn’t fit. It turned out to be a ’32-‘36 axle which also has a bit more drop in it than a Model A axle. In the meantime Graham from Palmy rang one morning to say all looked good and he was confident that the oil leaks could be fixed. The same afternoon, he rang again to say that they had tested the crankshaft and that it was cracked! This came as something of a shock as it had been tested before any work was done on it originally. Not a problem I thought, Roger has new crankshafts listed in his catalogue at $2964, but a quick phone call soon dispelled that notion as he hasn’t stocked them for a while, being too expensive and slow moving. From there emails issued from my computer to all and sundry only to discover that Snyders were out of stock too, (US$1585) but Scat could help.

Conditions are a bit tight in the garage

In my mind I could see no point in putting another second-hand one in which would require re-grinding, counterweights added and balancing, and then with the motor putting out more than twice the original horsepower, still be a liability. As we have entered an event in January, we wanted the crankshaft air-freighted out. We also explored getting a new crank machined from a billet, but although we got positive responses to that query, it looked like it might take longer than we could afford and the cost was still an unknown. In the end, Graeme McNeil and Derek Thomason both came up with propositions to land a crankshaft here, but Derek’s source (Snyders) had none in stock, and due to the pressure of time we went with Graeme McNeil who offered a new crankshaft landed including GST for $4-4500. This is comparatively cheap compared with the two Lancia Crankshafts we’ve had made and at least they’re available! In the meantime, having realised the later front axle wasn’t going to work, it looked like the original front axle was still available but that turned out to be wrong, and we were lucky to pick up a bare axle from Errol McAlpine. That’s now cleaned and painted and will be installed this weekend. With luck we’ll have it all back together by Christmas?

../continued page 10 Page 9

Page 10: NORTH ISLAND MODEL A FORD CLUB INC NEW ZEALAND Model A Torque · Welcome to the North Island Model A Ford Club Inc. The purpose of our club is to enjoy, restore, preserve and protect

Minor Improvements cont../

Expecting the crankshaft almost to have arrived, we were somewhat deflated when Graeme McNeil rang to say that he had just learnt that the crankshaft hadn’t been dispatched and in fact wouldn’t be available until November the 5

th.

Very Frustrating! I attempted to contact SCAT by email and phone without success as they appear to have counterweighted crankshafts listed. Finally they did come back to me but there was a 4-6 week delay until the next batch would be machined up and that was too much of a set-back. In the meantime I set about installing the original front axle. Keeping in mind that the chassis is 2” deeper than standard and the radius arms go to the chassis, not the bell housing. The 4” dropped axle was narrower giving less lock and less travel. It also required a “goose-necked” tie rod which flexed enough to allow the passenger’s side wheel to shimmy. I had fitted a steering damper which cured the problem but also made the steering a little bit heavier and didn’t allow the steering to self-centre quickly enough after going around a corner. I also had an adjustable drag link, necessary to get full lock on both sides with a shortened pitman arm. First I discovered that the drag link was hitting the chassis at each end of its travel so a standard pitman arm cured that. Next I discovered that the adjustable drag link was jamming on the perch bolt as it’s bulkier at each end, so an original drag link was resuscitated and fitted, where-upon I discovered it would only work fitted one way. This continual two steps forward and one back tests one’s patience, and frustratingly it had taken quite a lot of engineering work to get the dropped axle functioning satisfactorily in the first place. At the Fraser Car night, I was delighted to learn that Steve Driver could use the 30 thou. shell bearings out of my motor for a motor he’s doing up, it seemed to make something positive out of this soap opera!

Hi, I was at the Hershey Pennsylvania USA car meet last week. While walking the car parts flea market, I met one of the originators of your club. I"M SORRY I NEVER GOT HIS NAME. He was totally surprised that I read your club's newsletter. I told him I enjoyed reading the newsletter, and I was happy to read about all the events you plan for your members and their A's. The gent was a very nice guy, and a pleasure to speak with. He told me he recently bought a Model A coupe. If you know of whom I am writing, tell him I write Hi !!! Wayne Duprez, New York, USA

Technical Night – Fraser Cars – Wednesday 26 October

After having this venue in mind as a club visit for some time, it was great to see so many people make the trek to Beachhaven. There were even representatives from the Waikato and winterless North. Scott Tristram, the owner of Fraser Cars spoke almost nonstop for 3 hours about the construction of his cars and also low volume vehicle certification. Who has checked the website to see if their Model A mods are over or under the line? Of particular interest was the all brazed chassis construction of the Fraser’s and their awesome power to weight ratio. Malcolm Clarke of Bygone Autos also showed us his workshop where there was a very original old Holden and a Jaguar V12 alongside his Rover V8 race car, and an American pickup in the yard. There are never two vehicles the same in this workshop. At the same locality you can have your torque wrench calibrated, or get some pinion preload spanners made from plate steel by abrasive water cutting. May have to be another night. - Rob Brown

McLean’s Island Swap Meet is held every year and is a social gathering of many members from various car clubs around the country as well as the general public. You need to be interested in vehicles, machinery, motor accessories and general ‘junk’ to enjoy yourself. Drawing crowds of many enthusiastic people from all walks of life, I am told it is a “must see”. This I am yet to find out. If you are holidaying down South this time next year or have nothing to do, mark it on your calendar. You might find it interesting or should I say

find more ‘junk’.

Malcolm Elliott wanted clarification the annual subscription would be $45.00 + $30.00 if a posted newsletter is required and was concerned members without email addresses would still receive mailed newsletters at the Club’s cost. Ralph confirmed the small number of members without email addresses would continue to receive newsletters by mail.

Murray Ashby mentioned sharing a physical copy of the newsletter was part of the enjoyment in belonging to the Club. Ralph pointed out Life members (such as Murray) would still receive printed copies.

There was discussion about the alternative of cutting back on costs and trimming to a lower budget.

Terry Costello pointed out the NIMAFC subscription is the lowest of the many clubs he belongs to. He felt we should even index subscriptions to the inflation rate in future.

David Mossman mentioned the MAFCA annual subscription has increased to US$70.00 (NZ$96.00).

Following the above discussion, Ralph Levinson put forward a Motion to increase the annual subscription for both Individual and Family Memberships to one amount of $45.00. Seconded, John Castle. Approved unanimously. Motion carried.

Ralph Levinson also put forward a Motion that the charge for a printed/posted copy of the newsletter for 11 months be $30.00. Seconded, Anne Perkinson. 1 Against. Motion carried.

Club Captain’s Report The Club Captain’s Report was circulated prior to the meeting. Club Captain, Stephen Upson moved that it be accepted. Approved, Errol McAlpine. Seconded, Vivien Burgess.

How to get two extra Horsepower from your Model A!

M9604 Dick Jordan’s Model A Ford bogged down while getting shell at Jordan’s (Kukutango) Island. This shell was used around troughs, in gateways, on roads and as aggregate in concrete. Alan Jordan 2113001 (Photo supplied by the Helensville and District Historical Society)

THE FORDY FIRST PSALM (From the Model A Ford Club of Colorado)

The Ford is my auto, I shall not want. It maketh me to lie down in muddy roads, It leadeth me to the repair shop. It troubleth my soul. It leadeth me in the path of ridicule for its name’s sake. Yea, though I ride in the valleys I am towed up the hills. I fear much evil when thou are with me. Thy roads and thy springs discomfort me. Thou prepares a blow-out in the presence of mine enemies. Thou annointest my head with oil; The radiator runneth over. Surely, if thou followest me for the rest of my life, I shall dwell in the poor house forever.

Looking down the long Model A Assembly Line at Ford River Rouge Plant

Henry Ford started out in 1915 buy buying 2,000 acres along the River Rouge, west of Detroit, intending only to use the site to make coke, smelt iron and build tractors. His plans changed and by the late 1920’s Ford had built the complex up to the point where it included virtually every element needed to produce a car: a blast furnace, an open hearth mill, a steeling rolling mill, a glass plant, a huge power plant, and an assembly line that was first used during 1927, the last year

the Model T was produced.
