It looks like we may actually have an autumn and winter this year - Yahoo! I don’t know about you but I am enjoying this fall weather – I must be getting old! It seems that activities are increasing with the cooler weather, both in our community and in our CPM chapter. This article is dedicated to making sure you don’t miss out on

all the happenings with CPM at the state and local levels!

At the state level the 2014 membership drive has begun. We now have an on-line renewal process! It is faster and easier for everyone to renew his/her membership. You should have received an email from Ben Green or me about alumni association renewal. Please share these messages with your colleagues that may not be taking advantage of this opportunity to continue their growth and development as a manager. And remember, that if you paid dues for your 2013 membership you do not need to renew for 2014! YAY!

Speaking of state memberships, the Florida Society is looking for someone proficient in Excel who is interested in serving as the State Membership Chair. If you enjoy playing in Excel this would be a fun position for you!

Please let Sabrina Hartley or me know if you are interested in serving CPM at the state level.

On a local level, the second week of November is going to be a busy one for NFCPM. We have an excellent speaker scheduled for our Tuesday, November 12, meeting at the Leon County Community Building, 918 Railroad Avenue, @ 11:30-1:00. Dr. Pat Smith will provide us with information on how we can stay fit at work. I know this will be great information for many of us busy CPMers who struggle to fit healthy habits into our schedules. That same week, on Thursday, November 14, we have our annual NFCPM Symposium. This year we have another fantastic keynote speaker, Dr. Jerry Osteryoung, bestselling author and Tallahassee Democrat columnist. Dr. Osteryoung will give a presentation on becoming better leaders. The cost for the symposium is only $25.00 and is not limited to CPMers, so invite a friend. We are limited to 100 participants so please

make sure to register early.

November also brings with it the last chance for NFCPM officer nominations. The president, vice president, and treasurer positions are all available for election this year. If you are interested in serving the local Chapter in a leadership role please send an email expressing your interest to either of our Nominating Committee members, Angela Baldwin or Trella Lofton. The election will take place at the December Chapter meeting on Tuesday, December 10, @ 11:30-1:00, same location.

Now is the time to complete this 2014 membership form (click the blue link) and join the Florida Society of Certified Public Managers. For the rock-bottom price of $40 you can be part of this growing prestigious organization. As the first state-based CPM alumni association, our new organization has spent the last five months laying the foundation for a successful organization and a strong statewide network. Allow me to update you….. New Chapter Development – Our network is expanding with the creation of a new Northwest Florida Chapter. The chapter is working on its foundation documents and securing officers. The FSCPM will be voting on formal recognition and is working with the chapter to facilitate launch and future activities. We continue to look for opportunities to expand chapters and their audiences across the state. Website – The FSCPM website has been revamped and is regularly updated to be a timely and useful resource. You will find rich information for each chapter, a link to purchase CPM merchandise, and monthly updates in the ‘President’s Message.’ We will continue to enrich this resource with on-line learning opportunities and expanded information and links. Our Facebook page is also a growing resource. We continue to expand and update our on-line presence to serve our members statewide. On-Site Training – We are coordinating with program administrators (Ben and Dan) to deliver free, on-site training at various locations across the state. These trainings are tied to the program teaching schedule and require flexibility as class dates and locations are confirmed. The training sessions will initially be free to CPM graduates; providing continuing education to CPMs as well as reconnecting graduates with program staff. We will deliver on-going training through electronic and/or on-line means for CPMs that are not in the vicinity of an on-site training. 2014 Symposium – We are in the early planning stages to host a truly statewide FSCPM symposium with representation and input from each of the state’s chapters. This is going to be a great statewide event that you will not want to miss. In conjunction with the symposium, we are examining and revamping the FSCPM statewide awards. This event will provide training, recognize CPM chapters and activities across the state, encourage networking, and allow you to engage in a way that will ensure continued deliverables that meet your needs.

Join us as we continue to grow our ranks and services to Florida’s Certified Public Managers. You make a difference every day, and part of our mission is to make sure that your

CPM designation represents more than a certificate on the wall. You put in the hard work. You got the training and skills. Now, join us as we continue to grow and support those

skills. Please contact me with any questions or suggestions. I look forward to sharing in our greatness.

I admit I do slightly follow football, but I am not the biggest football fan; however, I do know that in the game of football a team scores a touchdown when they are able to cross their oppo-nent’s goal line while maintaining possession of the ball. I also know that there are many similarities between football, life, and leadership. For example, just as football players are looking to score touchdowns on the gridiron, leaders too are looking to score touchdowns in their workplaces, in their communities, in their homes and even in the federal government. So what are touchdown leadership principles? What are those top principles that will put significant points on the scoreboard, that will leave opponents confused and bamboozled and will eventually lead to a win. Touchdown leadership principles are those tried-and-true strategies, which leaders use to get results, and there are four touchdown leadership plays straight from the leader’s playbook guide that I would like to share with you. The first touchdown leadership principle from the leader’s playbook is conflict resolution. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stand in mo-ments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” A touchdown leader is someone who stands up for what they believe in and for what is right. It is a person who stands up for their beliefs while also being respectful of those people who have different viewpoints. It is a person who does not give up on, as Spike Lee says, doing the right thing. They don’t give up, give in or throw in the towel for doing what is good and what is right. The second touchdown leadership principle is walk the talk, and it is a principle that is taken from the LEX leadership class of the same name, which is offered on a regular basis through the Office of Learning and Development. For leaders when it comes to walking the talk character is the key. Character is who you are as a person when no one is looking and this principle is critical for a good leader. In fact, I think it is one of the most important plays in the leader’s playbook. The third touchdown leadership principle is mentoring. A good leader must always be developing future leaders and leaders who will one day take their place. I know we sometimes think that leaders will reign on their thrones forever, but this is not the case. Leaders only have a small window of opportunity to make a difference. A small window of opportunity to positively impact the lives of others and to motivate people to be better than the person they were yesterday. If you think life is short, leadership is shorter!! The last leadership play is one my Dad taught me after he was diagnosed with cancer. This particular touchdown leadership principle is near and dear to my heart and it’s a play I carry with me at all times. It’s the play way the quarterback is at the 50-yard line and he sees a player in the end zone. He throws the football. It flies through the air, passing all his opponents, and then lands squarely in the hands of his receiver…touchdown!!!! My father called this touchdown leadership principle chess not checkers. In order to win in chess you have to have vision. In chess you need to think not only one move ahead but sometimes two and three moves ahead. Leaders must too have vision. They too must be willing to think two and three moves ahead. Now that you know the top four leadership plays, what will you do to exercise your touchdown leadership skills? Leadership is not easy and neither is football. There will be times in leadership, as well as in football, where you have winning plays and losing plays but in order to even win you have to get in the game. Happy holidays and may you continue to develop your leadership skills!!

October NFCPM Meeting Overview by Denise Barber, NFCPM Secretary

President Pam King was unable to attend the meeting due to a conflict at work. Vice-President Travis Knight welcomed everyone and thanked them for attending. Travis announced that the 2014 Membership Form is on the FSCPM website. Membership is $40/year or $70/two years. Travis reminded attendees that Dr. Smith, a local chiropractor, is the presenter for November, who will talk about incorporating healthy living habits into the workplace. In December the Chapter will have a Holiday party, with networking opportunities, games, food, etc.

Secretary Denise Barber announced that the Symposium registration form is on the website. Registration is $25 and there are three payment methods: 1) pay by check or cash at today’s meeting; 2) mail a check to Treasurer Kim VelDink (address on form); or 3) if your agency is paying for it go through My Florida Market Place (MFMP) and use a P.O. Kim can help you with that process. She can be reached at [email protected]. The Symposium, Public Management in the Real World, is on Thursday, November 14, from 9:00-3:00, at the Betty Easley Center at Southwood.

Election Nominating Committee members Angela Baldwin and Trella Lofton were unable to attend the meeting. However, Chapter members seeking to run for office, or nominate someone for office, should contact them @ [email protected] and/or [email protected].

Treasurer Kim VelDink announced that we were reimbursed (by FSU) for the money for graduation so we now have over $1,800 in our account. We earned $200 on the Macy’s fundraiser and $50 (so far) on the Wharf Express fundraiser. We are waiting for the balance of the money from the Wharf Express.

Volunteer Coordinator Sherry Valdez recognized and thanked Cheryl Farner for volunteering @ the Swing Dance in September. Sherry and Travis encouraged members to volunteer whenever possible. Several members are volunteering at WFSU’s fundraiser next week. Information about upcoming volunteer opportunities is included in the monthly newsletter, or you can contact Sherry Valdez @ [email protected].

Statewide CPM President Sabrina Hartley gave an update on what is going on at the state level:

On-site training dates have shifted due to the FSU CPM training schedule. However, the FSCPM is committed to making these on-site trainings happen (free of

charge, initially, for CPM graduates).

FSCPM will look to the local chapters to identify a 2014 symposium representative to participate in planning and implementation of the FSCPM Annual

Statewide Symposium; the date is TBD. Stay tuned for more details.

The 2014 Membership Drive will be coming to your in-box soon, and I encourage everyone to sign-up and be a part of this growing organization (membership

form available online). It’s a super deal for $40 - you can be a part of something great.

Fred Wollet, Communication Committee Chair, apologized that the newsletter was mailed out late and vowed to do better in the future. Additionally, Fred asked that members submit articles for the monthly newsletter. Articles can be emailed to Fred @ [email protected] or to Denise @ [email protected].

CPMers Julie Kates and Denise Barber were this month’s presenters. Their presentation was entitled “BAZINGA - Interviewing the CPM Way”. The material was interesting, informative, and entertaining. Howard Greenfield won the free lunch. Mary Rouis, Twanna Smith, and Travis Knight won the door prizes.

The next meeting is on Tuesday, November 12, from 11:30-1:00, @ the Leon County Community Building, 918 Railroad Avenue. Guest speaker is Dr. Smith, local

chiropractor, who will talk about incorporating healthy living habits into the workplace.

This is the month—Time to Vote!!! Per the Chapter’s Bylaws (available upon request via email) the officers shall be nominated and elected following this process: NFCPM members may make nominations for officers beginning October 1 and ending on November 15 for officers to be installed the following January. Nominations may be made by direct electronic mail to Angela Baldwin ([email protected]) and Trella Lofton ([email protected]), the NFCPM Board members in charge of the election. Ms. Baldwin and Ms. Lofton will promote the election and encourage member participation via emails, newsletter articles, the Facebook page, and the Chapter website. They will also ascertain all nominees’ qualifications to run for office. During the 2013 election process, Angela and Trella will receive nominations of candidates for the offices of President, Vice President, and Treasurer. In the event there is more than one nominee for a position, a ballot, which includes the email addresses of the Board members in charge of the election, will be created and distributed to the members by electronic mail no later than November 30. If there is only one nominee for an office, that office will be filled by voice vote of members present at the December meeting. Members must submit their votes in a format as directed by the Angela and Trella. All votes/ballots must be received by November 30. Votes/ballots received after that date will not be counted. They will be responsible for the counting of ballots and report the results of the election to the Chapter President no later than December 5. The President will inform the newly elected officers of their impending installation, which will occur at the January meeting.

better.” - Bill Bradley, former U.S. Senator

best of everything.” - Anonymous

Win People to Your Way of Thinking—Begin in a Friendly Way 7. Don’t Worry About Criticism—Do the Very Best You Can 3. Be a Leader—Ask Questions instead of giving orders 8. Prevent Fatigue and Worry—Learn to Relax at Work 4. Break the Worry Habit Before it Breaks You—Keep Busy 9. Keep Your Energy and Spirits High—Put Enthusiasm Into Your Work

5. Cultivate a Mental Attitude that will Bring You Peace and Happiness - Adapted from www.dalecarnegie.com

When Albert Einstein was making the rounds of the speaker's circuit, he usually found himself eagerly longing to get back to his laboratory work. One night as they were driving to yet another rubber-chicken dinner, Einstein mentioned to his chauffeur (a man who somewhat resembled Einstein in looks & manner) that he was tired of speechmaking. "I have and idea, boss," his chauffeur said. "I've heard you give this speech so many times. I'll bet I could give it for you." Einstein

laughed loudly and said, "Why not? Let's do it!" When they arrive at the dinner, Einstein donned the chauffeur's cap and jacket and sat in the back of the room. The chauffeur gave a beautiful rendition of Ein-stein's speech and even answered a few questions expertly Then a supremely pompous professor ask an extremely esoteric question about anti-matter formation, digressing here and there to let everyone in the audience know that he was nobody's fool. Without missing a beat, the chauffeur fixed the professor with a steely stare and said, "Sir, the answer to that question is so simple that I will let my chauffeur, who is sitting in the back, answer it for me."

How Government Works - Adapted from http://lifestyle.resourcesforattorneys.com

The government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert. Congress said someone may steal from it at night; so they created a night watchman, and hired a person for the job. Then Congress said, "How does the watchman do his job without instruction?" So they created a planning division and hired two people, one person to write the instructions and one person to do time studies. Then Congress said, "How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?" So they created a quality control (QC) division and hired two people, one to do the studies and one to write the reports. Then Congress said, "How are these people going to get paid?" So they created a payroll division and hired two more people a time keeper and a payroll officer. Then Congress said, "Who will be accountable for all of these people?" So they created an administrative division and hired three more people: an Admin Officer, Assistant Admin Officer and a Legal Secretary. Then, one year later, Congress reviewed the operation of the desert scrap yard and said, "We have had this command in operation for one

year and we are $22,000 over budget. We must cut back overall costs!" So they eliminated the night watchman.
