Around 9,300 bicycle helmets will be going to children across Ohio thanks to a partnership between the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). ODOT is contributing $25,000 to the campaign with the Ohio AAP kicking in another $14,000.

The effort is part of the Ohio AAP’s Put a Lid on It! Bike Helmet Safety Awareness campaign in conjunction with Bike Helmet Safety Awareness Week May 2-10, 2015

“We are incredibly grateful for ODOT’s support of our Put a Lid on It campaign, and look forward to this partnership,” said Melissa Wervey Arnold, Executive Director for the Ohio AAP. “With ODOT’s support, we will be able to supply three times as many bike helmets to children than we did last year.”

At an event in Columbus, Yay Bikes and CoGo Bike Share joined ODOT and Ohio AAP to distribute bike helmets to local organizations across the state and provided training sessions for biking education, including how to properly fit children with bike helmets.

A combination of efforts is necessary to effectively increase helmet usage rates among Ohio children including

raising awareness of the benefits, encouraging model behavior among adults, distributing bike helmets to Ohio children and advocating for supportive public policies.

“Spring is here and children getting out to enjoy the great outdoors on their bikes. We want them to be as safe as possible by having the right equipment,” said ODOT Director Jerry Wray. “We’re happy to be a partner in this effort to get helmets to children who may not otherwise have easy access to them.”

As part of Ohio’s transportation system, the state has 4,207 miles of bike routes and trails, including the Ohio to Erie Trail which connects Cincinnati and Cleveland. Since 2008, ODOT has invested $60 million into the Safe Routes to School program which builds sidewalks and improves street crossings and encourages children to walk or bike to school safely.

To learn more about Bike Helmet Safety Awareness Week, visit the Put A Lid On It Facebook page at www.facebook.com/bikehelmetsafety or the Chapter website at www.ohioaap.org. To learn more about the Ohio SRTS program visit: www.dot.state.oh.us/saferoutes.

Kalahari Resort, Maui Sands Resort, and Rain Waterpark. KID PERK: No water wings needed; zero-depth entry pools and special shallow pools for toddlers make it fun for all ages. Plus, complimentary life vests are offered at most parks for extra safety.

4 Ghostly Manor Thrill Center – Don’t let the name fool you, there’s very little that’s scary about this family-fun place. Beyond the popular haunted house, families enjoy a roller-skating rink, indoor play area, black light miniature

golf, XD-3D movies, and arcade games. KID PERK: Kids got a lot of pent up energy? Let them jump, slide, and bounce it out in one of Ghostly Manor’s giant inflatable obstacle courses and slides.

5 Island Tour Train/Fun Pack – A great way for families to experience Put-in-Bay. The tour train offers a narrated island tour with on/off privileges at the popular sites and attractions. The Island Fun Pack is a packaged-deal that

matter your age. Then, get your sea legs over to the Maritime Museum to learn about Lake Erie shipwrecks, pirates, and boats. The Milan Museum features a multi-building campus featuring a blacksmith shop, general store and carriage shed along with a toy house and glass collection. There are also a number of rides, games, and shows throughout the park that kids and parents can enjoy together. My name is Kimberley Bodi and I attend Vanguard Tech for business management and will be graduating in the Class of 2015. My hometown school is Port Clinton High School. At PCHS I am in the drama club where I played Widow Blairhouse in the play Headin’ to a Weddin’, a redneck comedy.

I placed first in Fundamental Spreadsheet Applications through the Business Professionals of America. With this group I got to travel to Columbus for state competition. I have received a letter award certificate for excellence in the area of school activities, community service, student achievement and citizenship. I have volunteered at the first Conestoga in Port Clinton.

I plan to pursue business management after graduation.

My name is Chris Cheek. I am a senior at EHOVE in the Criminal Justice program. My home school is Margaretta Local School. I have attended Margaretta since I was in preschool. I am an honor roll student with a 3.5 GPA. I am a third year letterman in football and a first year letterman in basketball. I was awarded the Career Student for the first nine weeks at EHOVE this year and have received two Academic Awards in Social Studies and History.

My favorite subject in school is History and my favorite thing about school is seeing my friends everyday. My favorite memory about school is when a kid fell off the back off the bleachers during our 3rd grade music program.

After high school I will be going in to the Air Force. I live sometime in August and will be in Security Forces. I plan to pursue a career in Criminal Justice while I am in the Air Force. My advice for students is to stay in school and work hard as you never know where your education will lead you.
