Moscow

When you drive through the Palouse country surrounding Moscow and wit-ness its amber waves of grain, the song “America the Beautiful” will certainly come to mind. Golden wheat and barley fi elds, bright yellow canola fl owers, and emerald-green pea fi elds are all set against an azure sky. Nestled in the lus-cious fi elds of the Palouse is Moscow, home of the University of Idaho, one of the West’s most picturesque campuses. Be sure to see the gothic style adminis-tration building, visit the arboretum, or attend the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.

The city of Moscow is an eclectic mix of small-town friendliness and college-town energy. The downtown area is full of interesting shops and restaurants and is adjacent to tree-lined neighbor-hoods where children play and families gather. Plan a visit to the Appaloosa Museum, which celebrates the breed’s noble history with the Nez Perce Tribe. The many events held at the univer-sity should be on your itinerary, from sports to theater productions. You’ll be impressed with all there is to do in this small Idaho town.

Timber Country

From Moscow, you can meander through rolling fi elds, past beautiful mountain meadows, and up into timber country to see magnifi cent stands of Cedar, Tamarack, and Fir trees. Take Hwys 3, 6, and 8 through the towns of Princeton, Harvard, Santa, and Troy. Take a short hike to Elk Creek Falls near Elk River, a classic tributary falls set in a peace-ful, shaded gorge. The mountains offer great camping in the summer, hunting in the fall, and perfect terrain for winter snowmobiling.

Lewiston

At the confl uence of the Clearwater and Snake Rivers, Lewiston is the city at the lowest elevation in Idaho at only 738 feet above sea level. That is why you’ll see barges being loaded with northwest wheat or paper products at the Port of Lewiston. Lewiston’s location makes it an ideal base to use when exploring north central Idaho, with many lodging and dining options from which to choose. Walk or bike along the Snake River and pause at Hells Gate State Park for a cool water retreat and a visit to the Lewis and

Clark Discovery Center. Lewiston has a quaint downtown area with shaded streets, historic buildings, and the cam-pus of Lewis and Clark State College, home to numerous regional events.

Hells Canyon, America’s deepest river gorge, should be another “must see” on your list. Experiencing the rapids from a jet boat will make it even more memorable. Guided excursions are launched from Lewiston, White Bird, and Hells Canyon Dam.

Orofi no

A loop tour from Lewiston will land you in Orofi no, where Dworshak State Park offers boating and camping on the 54-mile, tree-lined shoreline of Dworshak Reservoir. While in the area, note the 717-foot high Dworshak Dam—it is the tallest straight-axis dam in the Western hemisphere. Consider a detour off Hwy 12 onto the Gold Rush Historic Byway (Hwy 11) through the Weippe prairie, where the Nez Perce Tribe welcomed the exhausted Lewis and Clark expedi-tion. Continue on to Pierce, a mining-era town that celebrated its 150th birthday in 2010. Explore the region’s history by stopping in at the Clearwa-ter Historical Museum (Orofi no) or the Bradbury Memorial Logging Museum (Pierce), or by attending Pierce’s 1860 Days celebration.

Camas Prairie

However you leave Lewiston, you’ll be driving uphill. If you take scenic Hwy 95 southbound, you’ll pass the Nez Perce National Historical Park and Spalding’s Mission through a picturesque canyon. You’ll emerge onto the bucolic farm-lands of the Camas Prairie, named for the camas fl owers native to the area. For something a little different, con-sider staying in a yurt in the forests of Winchester State Park near the park’s 104-acre lake. Then visit the nearby Wolf Education and Research Center where you’ll have the rare chance to glimpse wolves in their natural habitat.

In Cottonwood, stop in at Dog Bark Park—Idaho’s most unusual bed & breakfast inn—and see Sweet Willy Colton, the world’s largest beagle. He will inspire you to visit his owner’s chainsaw art shop. One of Idaho’s oldest and best museums is also near Cottonwood—the Historical Museum at St. Gertrude’s, adjacent to a beauti-ful chapel, with marvelous views of the Camas Prairie.

Grangeville anchors the southern end of the prairie. Here, Idaho’s great out-doors beckon with summer whitewater trips, fall hunting trips, and winter snowmobiling. Stop in at the visitor’s center to see a replica of the Tolo Lake mammoth, unearthed nearby in 1994. For a genuine backcountry trip, take Hwy 14 to Elk City or Dixie and be liter-ally on the edge of the largest wilder-ness area in the lower 48 states.

« Elk River Backcountry Byway

This 57-mile wildlife viewing opportunity begins at either Orofi no or Bovill on Hwy. 8 and meanders past small ranches and through evergreen forests deep into the backcountry. At Elk River, take a short hike to see Elk Creek Falls.

This beautiful byway—along Hwys. 12 and 13—is the easiest way to trace the Lewis & Clark Expedi-tion route along the Clearwater and Lochsa Rivers. The Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail lies on the mountainous ridges above the 191 mile drive.

« Gold Rush Historic Byway

A gold strike in 1860 brought prospectors across the Clearwater River and up into the mountains

above. Bursting with fascinating history and wild-life, this 42.5 mile route begins east of Orofi no

« Lewis & Clark

No visit to north central Idaho is complete without exploring Hwy 12, the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway, which meanders along the Lochsa and Clearwater Rivers. Begin your own excursion at Lewiston on the Washington border or Lolo Pass on the Montana state line. High above the rivers on mountain ridges is the most pristine section of the Lewis and Clark Trail, much the same as when the expedition passed through this area over two hundred years ago. After an exhausting month-long trek across the Bitterroots Mountains in Montana and back into Idaho at Lolo, the expedition arrived at the Weippe Prairie in September of 1805, weary and starving. The Ni Mii Pu (Nez Perce Tribe) welcomed the strang-ers and ensured their survival. They were considered the most hospitable tribe the party encountered. To learn more about the Nez Perce history and culture, stop at any one of the 38 sites on the Nez Perce National Historical Park, the only national park that cel-ebrates a people instead of a place. The headquarters at Spalding has an impressive museum and visual pre-sentation, and is a good place to get an overview of the sites that you may want to visit. At the Lewis and Clark Discovery Center (Hells Gate State Park in Lewiston), you will learn more about this historic exploration of the mountainous American West. Afi cio-nados may want to join the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation Annual Meeting, scheduled annually at the Nez Perce Tribe’s Event Center at the Clearwater Casino Campus.

White bird and Riggins

Between White Bird and Riggins, you’ll follow the mighty Salmon River through the valleys and canyons it carved into the mountains. Along the way, you’ll see whitewater rafts—this area is Idaho’s whitewater capital. You can book half-day or week-long river trips from Lewiston, White Bird, and Riggins. From White Bird, you can drive down into Hells Canyon to Pittsburg Landing, a picnic area and boat launch on the Snake River. Riggins, with its numerous river outfi tters beckoning you, is a fun place to stay, with its casual small-town atmosphere. It is the closest town to Heaven’s Gate, a van-tage point into Hells Canyon—North America’s deepest river gorge—in the Seven Devils Mountains. Inquire locally before driving up, since the elevation is over 8,407 feet, and the road can be challenging.

If you’re in Riggins in the spring, plan to see the Salmon River Jet Boat races, the fi rst leg of the U.S. Championship Jet Boat series, where world-class competitors conquer the rugged waters at unbelievable speeds.

Fishing enthusiasts will love the area’s steelhead runs in both spring and fall. Idaho is the only inland western state with ocean-run salmon and steelhead.

Visit the Historical Museum at St. Gertrude’s and take a self-guided tour of the chapel. Attend the Raspberry Festival there in August for arts and crafts, a car show, a quilt display, and of course—raspberry shortcake.
