May 29, 2014
Hosted by
26 Main St N, Unit 1
Callander, ON
4:30 pm to 7:00 pm
Thursday,
June 26, 2014 Mini-Trade Show
Business After Hours
at Best Western See page 8 for
booth information
Two presentations were sched-
uled at the May board meeting.
Cst. Merv Shantz, Games Man-
ager for the Special Olympics
Ontario Winter Games (see
below) and North Bay Hydro
(see page 6 for more details).
President Shogren also re-
minded everyone that this is the
last week to have an opportunity
to participate in the North Bay
Hydro survey for the businesses
(found on page 2). Please take
two minutes and provide your
thoughts regarding hydro and
your business.
President Derek Shogren of-
fered sincerest congratulations
to the North Bay Battalion on an
exceptional first season. The
players were top notch, along
with the management and
coaching staff. He also thanked
the great support of the fans and
businesses who came forward to
sponsor and ensure our success
in getting OHL back in our re-
gion.
Another highlight was the
President’s congratulations to
Walker’s Van & Storage who
celebrated 25 years in business
recently.
The President gave credit to all
those that helped organize the
recent Job Fair that offered the
opportunity to over 475 atten-
dees seeking employment. He
was pleased to say that the
company he manages were
successful in finding new hires
as were other companies that
were seeking employees.
Congratulations went to
Canadore College on their part-
nership with Sikorsky Aviation,
as they recently acquired a Si-
korsky Helicopter for training
maintenance at their aviation
campus.
The President congratulated
Lois Krause on her retirement
from the North Bay Regional
Health Centre Foundation.
The North Bay Community
Foundation hosted their gala
dinner and the President noted
that they made over $26,000 for
the foundation. This was their
first dinner without their foun-
der, the late Jack Burrows.
President Shogren also offered
our thoughts and prayers to our
oldest living Past President
(1959) Herb Brown on the
recent passing of his wife.

At left: Chamber
Director Cliff
Pilon thanks
Todd Wilcox and
Umar Waqas of
North Bay Hydro
for their presen-
tation at the May board meeting. The presentation included past and future forecasted
rates for hydro for businesses, and what a typical breakdown in hydro costs for a
business looks like (48% Provincial Global Adjustment, 22% HOEP Provincial Charges,
13% Federal and Provincial Taxes, 5% Ontario One transmission, 4% Debt Repayment
Charges to Ontario Electricity Financial Corporation and 4% North Bay Hydro). It was
interesting to note that the 4% for North Bay Hydro is broken down further to almost
60% for upgrading infrastructure and equipment as well as maintenance of the lines,
with a lean administration of only 13% of the 4%. Conservation projects from 2011 to
2014 have proven a savings of $3.5 million.
