Tony also supplied the picture for the front cover.

Kumari has once again given permission for her ilatest interview to be published in this magazine, this time with Sian Williams. We thank both Kumari and Sian.

The next issue should be out by the end of April Iso youi’ll be hav-ing two in the month) and then we’ll be back on track.

Congratulations to the eight clubs who will be contesting the North Wales Cup and Plate competitions at Parc Eiirias, it should be a cracking weekend of top quality rugby.

By the time the next issue is published, we’ll be a lot nearer to knowing if RGC are going to make the promotion spot to the Pre-miership. Like the rest of the rugby folk of North and Mid Wales, we wish them all the best for the run-in. Exciting times ahead!

Wrexham U10 v Newcastle U10 by Chris

Bala RFC will be hosting two major touch rugby events this sum-mer, one for elite teams and the other for fun.

Touch rugby will be kicking off in Bala every Thursday evening at 7pm from 31st March 2016 over the summer. It is open to men and women aged 15 or over. No prior experience is necessary and the only equipment you need is a pair of boots! The club will also be hosting two rugby tournaments this summer, one for elite teams and the other for a bit of fun.

The mixed open touch rugby tournament will take place on Satur-day 25th June 2015. This event is the final series in four national touch rugby tournaments organised by the Welsh Touch Associa-tion (WTA) and will be attracting some of the best teams across Wales.

A team must consist of a minimum of six players with at least three ladies on the pitch at any one time. It costs £150 per team to register and concessions are available for junior teams (mostly consisting of players under 18 years of age on the day of the tour-nament) or teams that bring non-playing qualified referees.

The game will be played under the Federation of International Touch (FIT) rules. If you are interested in playing or register-ing a team in the tournament then contact Harry Guttridge on 07882712660 or [email protected]. The closing date for registration is Monday 20thJune.

The chairman of Clwb Rygbi’r Bala, Tony Parry, said “We are very proud to be hosting this event and it is the first time that the national touch series has been hosted in North Wales. We hope that it will raise the profile of touch rugby in the region and inspire local people to take up the game.”

The fun day tournament takes place the weekend after the WTA mixed open, on Saturday 2nd July. Referees will be more relaxed with the rules and there will be a coaching clinic in the morning to bring people up to speed with the game. Players can either regis-ter a team before the event or just turn up on the day.

This event will be combined with the usual fun day activities, such as the tug of war, obstacle course and sheep racing. There will also be a beer tent to keep the athletes and spectators hydrated.

One of the event organisers, Harry Guttridge, said “These two tournaments offer something for everyone. Bala are aiming to field at least one team in the mixed open and the more experienced players can train for this over the coming months. Those that are new to the game or just was a bit of fun can enter the fun day tournament instead the following weekend.

We are pleased to welcome back player coach Ceri Redman this year who is busy putting together a ladies team. She’s already got plenty of volunteers and they will start training three months earlier this year to make the most of the light evenings.

Last year we were lucky enough to have specialist coaching in Bala from Wrexham Raptors every other week and a few of our players went on the represent North Wales in the National trials in Swansea. We want to build on last years success and will be working in close partnership with the WTA, WRU and Wrexham Raptors to deliver regular skills clinics and quality coaching at Maes Gwyniad”.

WTA Programme Manager, Matt Adams, said “It’s fantastic that newly established clubs will be hosting rounds of the WTS this year. It’s particularly pleasing to see the series being hosted at Bala RFC by Bala Touch and at Ystrad Mynach by Caerphilly Chargers. The exposure of the game will be increased in those areas and hopefully result in more local people wishing to take up the game.”

The Deputy Minister for Cul-ture, Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates, has announced that Parc Eirias will benefit from the £5million Welsh Govern-ment loan scheme to update its facilities, which will include the addition of a new 3G pitch.

Parc Eirias will receive a loan of almost £1 million to update its facilities with a new 3G rugby /football pitch, an artificial bowl-ing green, a hydrotherapy pool, multi-purpose activity room and dedicated ATP hockey surface.

The Wales Collaborative Sports Facilities Group will also be providing £300,000 in funding. With almost £900,000 from Conwy County Borough Coun-cil, the total investment in the project will be £2.19million.

The Deputy Minister said: “We launched our Sports Facilities Capital Loan Scheme to help local authorities find new and exciting ways to encourage whole families to enjoy and take part in sporting activities in their area.

“We recognise that this is a challenging financial time for authorities and I am pleased we are supporting them to cre-ate the right facilities in the right places, breaking down barriers to sport so that people of all abilities, ages and backgrounds can enjoy its many benefits.”

The Welsh Government’s Sports Facilities Capital Loan Scheme was introduced on a pilot basis to provide local authorities with the opportunity

£1m Welsh Government loan to update Parc Eirias facilities

to apply for an interest free loan to make them more inclusive, attractive and accessible and ensuring they meet the needs of the local area.

Councillor Graham Rees, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Marketing and Leisure, Conwy County Borough Council said: “We’re delighted that we’ve been able to secure this Sports Facilities Capital Loan to con-tinue the development of Parc Eirias as a Regional Centre of Sporting Excellence; it will help us provide first clasas commu-nity facilities that will be avail-able, and in excellent condition, all year round for local sports clubs.”

Parc Eirias has been a major catalyst for the growth of rugby in North, allowing key matches, such as tonight’s U20s Six Nation decider, to be hosted in the region. The addition of 3G pitches is expected to boost this development further.

Welsh Rugby Union Group Chief Executive Martyn Phillips said: “Eirias has become a centre of excellence for North Wales rugby in all senses of the word. As the home base for Wales U20 for the past five years, the facilities on and off the field and the outstanding staff have helped the side to flourish, culminating in a Grand Slam decider this weekend.

“Having invested heavily in an academy structure for north Wales, we believe the new 3G pitch and facilities will enable more youngsters from the area,

such as Rhun Williams, one of the form players in the Wales Under 20 side, to reach their full potential within north Wales, through our regional perform-ance pathway, and the addition-al facilities will allow a greater focus on women and girls.

“In addition, the new 3G pitch will provide an important training and playing facility for community rugby clubs in the area, along with the delivery of community coach and referee education.”

Further Information--The Sports Facilities Capital Loan Scheme provided loans of up to £1million to local authori-ties for projects that met the scheme criteria. These were interest free and must be repaid within ten years. The loan is for capital projects only.

The scheme was a pilot and an evaluation has been under-taken. It concluded that overall the scheme was welcomed and the process was comprehen-sive and clearly administered. However, it was evident from the evaluation that if Minis-ters were minded to run the scheme again, the appetite for the scheme at that particular juncture would need to be as-sessed.

Last year the Welsh Govern-ment announced that local authorities across Wales were able to apply for £5million in interest free loans to improve local sport and recreational facilities.

PWLLHELI v LLANGEFNIPictures kindly supplied by Pwllheli RFC.

The Bethesda rugby girls took to the road recently for their first ever tour.

The under 13’s 15’s and 18’s enjoyed watching the Wales v Italy men’s game in Seven Sisters Rugby Club and what a warm welcome they had there along with a some parents, coaches and manager.

They then had a quick visit to their hotel before being taken for a mystery trip which no one knew anything about Unbeknown to everyone, Yvonne Dignam the team manager and Simon Dignam, senior coach, had called in a few favours and arranged for the girls to meet with the Wales Women’s team for a meet and greet at their hotel before their game with Italy the next day.

The girls were gob smacked when shown into a room and greeted by the whole team, coaching staff and physios. They were wel-comed by team captain Rachel Taylor who introduced the team, they then went on to say a bit about how they prepare before a match.

The girls then got a chance to ask questions and each Wales player answered in great detail about how they got into rugby and what the girls should be doing to get into international rugby.

Then the cameras came out and a few selfies were taken.

Rachel mentioned in her talk about how they prepare for games that they have a little sing song so the Bethesda girls gave them a song. They were amazed and this time it was the Wales team who had their cameras out.

Then it was time to announce the next surprise. The girls knew they were going to watch the Wales v Italy women’s game on Sunday but Rachel announced that it had been arranged that they were the guard of honour for the game. The girls left on cloud nine back to the hotel.

Bethesda Girls get Welsh team surprise

On Sunday the surprises kept coming, nine of the girls were chosen to be match ball girls for the game and after welcoming the teams on the field in the guard of honour the girls took to their places for their role of ball girls.

Our youngest player had the most important job which was to take the ball to the centre of the field for each play and she did an amazing job each time along with the rest of the girls. Those girls watching and the parents also had a very exciting game but not the score they wanted.

The journey home was a bit quieter with very tired girls and par-ents but didn’t sleep much too busy with Facebook and tweeting their new friends, the Wales women’s team, and sharing their experiences. And what an experience it was.

Billy McBryde stepped off the bench and up to the mark to kick Wales Under 20 to a last-gasp 18-15 victory over Scotland with the first action of his debut in his Dad’s native North Wales. Robin McBryde, the Wales forwards coach, had driv-en the length of the country from the Welsh training camp in Cardiff to Colwyn Bay to watch his teenage son take on the much fancied Scots and it ended up as a very worthwhile journey.

He may have had to wait until the 79th minute to see Billy come onto the field, but he stole the show with his nerveless, left footed penalty that put Wales into the lead for the first time in the game. With his Scar-lets’ clubmate, Dan Jones, having an off day with the boot a week after scoring 20 points in the victory over Ireland in Dublin, McBryde was called onto the field when Wales were awarded a 79th minute penalty 35 metres out from the Scottish posts.

With the scores tied at 15-15 it was going to be a hero or zero moment, but the talented teenager kept his nerve, struck the ball sweetly and hit the target to give Wales the lead with a minute left on the clock.

The Scots arrived with their tails in the air after their first win at this level over the auld enemy and with a magnificent driving line-out they managed to weather an early Welsh storm and build-up a 10 point interval lead at Parc Eirias. The Welsh forwards simply had no answer to the Scottish line-out in the first-half and conceded two tries from that phase. To be fair, Wales grabbed a try of their own from flanker Shaun James from a five metre line out, but their best weapon was their scrum.

It took 48 minutes before the Italian referee blew for the game’s first scrum, but the Welsh pack wasted no

time in demonstrating their dominance in that area by bagging a penalty. Once again it was to prove a great weapon for Tom Phillips’ side.

Wales head coach Jason Strange had installed Scotland as firm favourites ahead of the game and for long periods it looked as though he had been right to do so. Their half-backs controlled territory very well and in the openside flanker Matt Smith, one of their two try scorers, they had the best player on the pitch, even though the Welsh scrum half Reuben Morgan-Williams picked up the official Man of the Match award.

The Scots soaked up 20 minutes of intense Welsh pressure playing into the wind and grabbed the game’s first points when their accomplished outside half Rory Hutchinson kicked a 21st minute penalty. Within three minutes the lead had grown to eight points after Smith was worked over from the second of two driving line-outs that took the Scots half the length of the pitch.

Jones was wayward with his kicking all night an after he had missed a penalty and great break from Morgan-Williams took the home side deep into the Scottish 22. The lively Keelan Giles was held up in the left corner, but Evans converted the close-range line-out into a Welsh try.

Scottish prop Murray McCallum followed suit before the break and Hutchinson’s conversion gave the confident Scots a handy interval lead with the wind to come at their backs in the second half. But it was Wales who came out of the blocks quickest in the second half and who dominated the territory.

They found a way, along with the referee, to counter-act the Scottish line out and it was the skipper Tom Phillips who cut the gap to one sore four minutes after the re-start with a second home try. Jones was narrowly wide with his conversion attempt off the touchline.

The try that levelled the scores from Ospreys flyer Giles was right out of the top drawer, with the centre Harri Millard and full back Rhun Williams showing great handling skill to release the wing. Once again Jones couldn’t hit the target of the touchline, but cometh the hour, cometh Billy McBryde.

As Jones left the field with a side strain when the penalty was awarded to Wakes, the youngster raced onto the field and took complete ownership of the situation. The kick was on the right side of the field for his cultured left boot and over went the match winning penalty.

Wales U20 16 v France U20 10Pictures by Tony Bale, Report by Welsh Rugby Union

Billy McBryde returned to the scene of his match winning debut for Wales Under 20 two weeks earlier to mastermind a brilliant Welsh performance that earned them a third successive triumph with a 16-10 win over France. McBryde showed nerves of steel by coming on to kick the decisive penalty to beat the Scots at Parc Eirias in round two of the Under 20 Six Nations Champi-onship, and the Scarlets outside half landed three penalties and a conversion to earn Wales a win that leaves them as the only unbeaten side in the tournament.

It means Tom Phillips’ side will head to Ashton Gate to face England in a Triple Crown showdown on 11 March with a possible first Grand Slam at this age group in their sights. The last time they won their opening three matches was in 2013, when they went all the way to the final game against England at Parc Eirias before losing 28-14. They have twice finished second since it went to Under 20 in 2008, but have yet to clinch a Triple Crown, Grand Slam or championship title. But after this superb showing against a much fancied French outfit they can head to Bristol full of confidence.

The French cause was hindered by a red card for wing Gabriel N’Gandebe after 56 minutes following a reckless challenge with his feet on Welsh full back Rhun Williams as he chased a kick ahead.

That earned him a second yellow card and left the French a man short for the final 24 minutes. Moments later man of the match McBryde kicked his third pen-alty and Wales had their noses in front at 9-7.

The first-half had seen France dominate the early exchanges and try to out-muscle the home side. But the Welsh pack were having nothing of it and they secured two scrum penalties which McBryde kicked to build a six point lead.

His opposite number, Anthony Belleau, had already missed the target with two shots at goal and Wales were thankful to hold a 6-0 lead at the break. But that didn’t last long as France came racing out of the blocks at the start of the second period.

Some solid approach work from the forwards left Wales short-handed on their right and Biarritz centre Alex Arrate was able to cross on the overlap for a try which Belleau converted to edge his side one point ahead.

The Welsh defence, led by inspirational skipper Tom Phillips and his workaholic back row, kept chopping down the French attackers and it was a midfield raid by the centre pairing Harri Millard and Joe Thomas that paved the way for Mc-Bryde’s third penalty just short of the hour.

Back came the French with another Belleau penalty to regain the lead, but then McBryde launched a move from just in front of his own posts that enabled Keelan Giles to show off his twinkle-toes . The Ospreys star sped up the left wing out of his 22 to maximise the space left by the red card shown to his opposite number.

Harrsion Keddie was up in support when he was cut down 30 metres out and eventually it was left to replacement prop Leon Brown to throw the try scoring pass to right wing George Gasson to complete an 80 metre score. It was a sen-sational effort which McBryde improved to open up a six point gap.

The outside half had a chance to drive a final nail in the French coffin with a 75th minute penalty, but this time he was wide. It didn’t matter, though, as Wales held on for a famous win.

Wales U20 35 v Italy U20 6Pictures by Tony Bale, Report by Welsh Rugby Ujnion

Wales Under 20 made history as they delivered a first junior Six Na-tions Grand Slam since 2005 as they overcame a nervous first-half to finally put Italy to the sword at Parc Eirias and emerge with a 35-6 victory. Tom Phillips’ side were all fingers and thumbs for the first 40 minutes as they let the sense of occasion get to them. They dropped the ball, conceded territory and were very much the second best side for long periods as the rugged Italians turned on the power.

But three second half tries turned the game on its head after the sides changed ends with the scoreboard level at 6-6. It meant Wales added the Under 20 Grand Slam to the Triple Crown they won against England last weekend - their first triumph at Under 20 level in the nine seasons games have been played at the age group.

Phillips now joins Stephen Jones (U21 - 1999), Paul James (U21 - 2003) and James Merriman (U21 - 2005) as a Grand Slam skipper and it was the Scarlets’ back row man’s charge down from a defen-sive kick out of the Italian 22 from the second half kick-off that settled the nerves and sparked a major second half revival.

There were two penalties a piece from the respective outside halves in the opening half and Italy briefly led 6-3 when Matteo Minozzi kicked his second goal. But Dan Jones levelled the scores with the final kick of the first-half and whatever was said in the dressing room at half-time certainly did the trick.

The forwards took charge, the Welsh scrum destroyed the Italian set-piece and off the back of their work the outstanding Harrison Keddie picked up two tries as Italy were swept aside on a wave of pride, passion and Welsh panache.

Wales had failed to put together any of the phase play that had enabled them to trounce England a week earlier in the first-half, but with some strong words from the coaching team of Jason Strange, Geraint Lewis, Chris Horsman and Richard Hodges no doubt ringing in their ears they were a transformed side after the break.

Jones kicked a penalty to edge his side in front after 46 minutes and then the direct approach from the home pack paved the way for Ked-die’s first try from close range. Jones added he conversion and then improved a driving line-out try from Scarlets’ openside Sean Evans.

That try came seconds after Italian prop Daniele Rimpelli was sent to the sin-bin for a senseless off the ball dump tackle on Harri Millard. There was a third home before Rimpelli returned, this time from right wing Joe Thomas.

Another Jones conversion extended the lead to 24 points before that man Keddie added the final seal of approval to an outstanding season for the Welsh youngsters with a second close-range, power try that came with the final move of the game.

Wales will now move on to the Junior World Championships in Man-chester this summer as one of the form teams - and one of the teams to beat.

Scorers: Wales: Tries: H Keddie 2, S Evans, J Thomas; Cons: D Jones 3; Pens: D Jones 3. Italy: Pens: M Minozzi 2.

Wales Under 20: Rhun Williams (RGC); Joe Thomas (Ospreys), Harri Millard (Cardiff Blues), Owen Watkin (Ospreys), Keelan Giles (Os-preys); Daniel Jones (Scarlets), Reuben Morgan-Williams (Ospreys); Corey Domachowski (Cardiff Blues), Dafydd Hughes (Scarlets), Dil-lon Lewis (Cardiff Blues), Shane Lewis-Hughes (Cardiff Blues), Adam Beard (Ospreys), Tom Phillips (Scarlets, captain), Shaun Evans (Scarlets), Harrison Keddie (Dragons)

RGCRGC 19 v Carmarthen Quins 25 RGC fall just short in

heroic Swalec Cup effort RGC 19 v Carmarthen Quins 25

Report by Dave Jones, Pictures by Alan Skeates

It was a case of so near and yet so far for RGC as they exited the SSE Swalec Cup at the hands of Principality Premiership side Carmarthen at Colwyn Bay.

Saturday’s quarter-final tie at Brookfield Drive saw the Championship hosts push their opponents all the way only to fall just short at the final hurdle.

RGC had caused a sensation by knocking out Premiership outfit Aberavon in the previous round, but there was to be no double giant-killing for the Gogs.

The visitors ran in three tries with fly-half Craig Evans kick-ing two conversions and two penalties to put away their Championship opposition.

There was barely a score in it for much of the game as both sides traded the lead.

RGC opened the scoring with an opportunist try after a quick turnover sent the ball across the park to wing Tiaan Loots, scorer of the key touchdown against Aberavon,

Loots evaded one tackler and crashed through another three to score, but James Lang’s conversion sailed wide.

Carmarthen were rewarded for their long spell of pressure with a try under the sticks for centre and North Walian Iolo Wyn Evans, converted by Craig Evans.

And Quins put themselves further ahead with a try in the corner for wing Lee Williams just before half time.

RGC hit back immediately after the restart with a try from Evan Yardley, this time converted successfully by Lang.

The hosts had a chance to edge themselves in front but Lang’s penalty kick hit the post.

Afon Bagshaw burst through midfield for a certain try after a battle at the 10-metre line, but play was called back for a scrum near halfway.

The visitors put themselves in front with a penalty from Evans to make it 15-12, but RGC full-back Bagshaw crossed the whitewash soon after.

He was on the end of some sharp passing play in the Quins 22 and burst through the defence to score.

Lang’s conversion made it 19-15 to the hosts with 20 min-utes left and the sizable home crowd were dreaming of the semi-finals.

But the Quins hit back with vicious efficiency as Williams leapt into the try area for his second of the afternoon, leav-ing a simple conversion for Craig Evans.

It was a case of so near and yet so far for RGC as they exited the SSE Swalec Cup at the hands of Principality Premiership side Carmarthen at Colwyn Bay.

RGC 26 v PONTYPOOL 11

5th March, 2016 - report by DaveJones, North Wales Newspapers

Player-Coach Josh Leach said Saturday’s magnificent result at Parc Eirias reflected the remarkable progress made by RGC as they claimed their first Championship victory over mighty Ponty-pool in five attempts.

Leach was particularly pleased with the quality of defending the team produced, as well as the stamina shown to clinch the game in the last 20 minutes.

“We worked really hard in training during the week and it really showed in that final 20 minutes,” said the scrum-half.

“We were especially brilliant in defence, although we could have been more composed with the ball at times. “But this was the first time we’ve beaten Pontypool and for us to come off the field 26-11 winners and still having more to give was so pleasing.

“The squad has come on so well in the past few months. They are mainly young lads but they are so willing to learn. We’re a very tight-knit group and are improving all the time.”

Leach added: “In the first half we didn’t make the most of our op-portunities.

“Although we led at half time, Pontypool were still very much in the game and pushed us back at the start of the second half and went ahead, but from there we got a grip.

“We’d said beforehand we could win it in the last 20 minutes and that’s what happened, but our hard work of the first 60 meant we could go on and do that.”

Pontypool took an early lead through a Clayton Gullis penalty which had originally been awarded to RGC for a knock-on, but was reversed after the home side showed a lack of discipline.

The hosts had a chance to equalise via a penalty from the centre spot, but although James Lang’s kick had the distance it sailed just wide.

RGC upped the pressure and grabbed the game’s opening try following a lineout, Lithuanian lock Zygimantas Radzius touching down in the corner.

From the kick-off the Gogs were penalised for crossing and Gullis restored the Ponty lead via a penalty.

Back came RGC and close to the interval home pressure told when an excellent dummy by Lang allowed Andrew Williams to ground in the corner.

Lang’s conversion looked good but the ball came back off the posts and half time arrived with a 10-6 home advantage.

A lively start to the second half saw both sides threaten before ‘Pooler claimed a try through wing Nathan Brooks.

RGC responded well and a penalty given for a high tackle was booted between the posts by Lang.

Another Lang three-pointer boosted the home lead to 16-11 enter-ing the final quarter.

Ponty pressed but then RGC made a superb break from defence and to huge cheers from the crowd Lang went over in the corner.

And the win was sealed when great hands led to Tiaan Loots add-ing a bonus-point clinching touchdown.

BARGOED 23 v RGC 20

12th March, 2016 - report by Scott Lawson, RGC News

Pictures kindly supplied by Liz Bryan

RGC were edged out by Bargoed in an enthralling encounter down South, which was nip and tuck for 80 minutes.

Coach Phil Davies took plenty of positives out of the game “we played some good rugby today and the players executed the plan we had coming into the game It shows how far we have come that we can be disappointed in a result due to a couple of errors”

As expected the game opened with the home-side testing RGC upfront, and the Gogs were putting in some good tackles. RGC were then going through some good phase play, and were able to make some runs from Andrew Williams and Huw Worthington.

James Lang put the first points on the board with a well kicked penalty to settle a few nerves.

RGC were clearly looking to get behind the Bargoed defence, and Alex Schwarz was kicking well from hand, with his fellow backs chasing down well.

Bargoed were winning the arm wrestle in the scrum, and the referee’s whistle was going on favour of the last years League Champions. As the game went on the home-side were looking dangerous making some clinical breaks from Humphries and Protheroe which meant much of the game was played in the RGC half. The Gogs were putting up a strong defence and the home-side knocked on at key times spurning the opportunities .

Lang missed a penalty before Mathew Hurley stuck over 2 kicks to take the lead. Bargoed had another decent break with a kick and chase but great covering work from the boot of Afon Bagshaw to clear the bouncing ball on the try-line to prevent the try.

Lang was next to earn some defensive plaudits with a big tackle as the try looked on. The home crowd were becoming more vocal, but RGC were able to quieten them down with a big driving maul wish was held up on the line, just as the away crowed were start-ing to celebrate

Lang levelled the score with a another penalty but as the half-time whistle approached the pendulum swung in Bargoed’s favour when Evan Yardley was giving a yellow and Hurly made it 9-6 at the break.

The home-side looked to make the man advantage count from the start of the 2nd half and they pressed RGC back towards the line, just when it looked like the score was on RGC worked the turno-ver and as result Carwyn Ap Myrddin was able to kick a loose ball

RGC edged out in enthralling game

down the pitch and outpace the Bargoed players before offloading to Andrew Williams to take the ball under the posts. It was a great try highlighting RGC’s defensive work along with the fitness to break the length of the field. Lang made the simple conversion.

RGC needed to play for territory but were unable to clear the lines from kick off, and the pressure was back on them.

RGC failed to collect their lineout and the try was gifted to Bargoed with a simple conversion from Hurley. Momentum was with Bargoed and they ran the ball again, and it was no surprise that another try came with Grant Rogers crossing the whitewash. Hurley once again hit the extras.

In seasons gone by RGC would have been out the game, but the mind-set of the team this year is much stronger and they re-grouped, focused and went again. The pack drove, worked hard and pushed the home-side back before Schwarz made a dart but was held up on the line.

RGC were going through the phases and it was Andrew Wil-liams who took the ball and crashed over the line for his 2nd of the game. Lang hit the conversion to make it 23-20. Tiaan Loots made a break down the line but was tackled into to touch, as the home crowd became more nervous.

In the final minutes Bargoed were given a penalty and took the kick into touch as they looked for the bonus point try. Hurley over-cooked the kick and in the end RGC came away with the losing bonus point and remain in 4th place with 8 games to go.

LLANHARAN 0 v RGC 80

19th March, 2016 - report by Scott Lawson, RGC News

Pictures kindly supplied by Liz Bryan

RGC put in a professional performance against bottom club Llan-haran when the racked up 12 tries in a big away 80-Nil away win.

With the SWALEC Championship promotion race looking even tighter with the Bargoed and Pontypool results on Friday night the Gogs knew what was needed from the first whistle.

The early 11am kick off they got an early wakeup call when the Llanharan centre broke through the defence and 3 missed tack-les. It was probably the alarm RGC needed as put down the first score when the ball was spread from left to right for winger Tiaan Loots to go over for the try.

The players were looking to offload keep the ball moving and some great hands from Shaun Lonsdale, James Lang and Cam Davies led to a Will Bryan try. Lang hit the 2 points.

Afon Bagshaw was next to run over the line, after he evaded some tackles to go in for try number 3. Lang was successful again with the boot.

As the clock ticked to 23 minutes the Gogs picked up the bonus point try when Will Bryan got the score. Lang was on form again with the extras.

They didn’t rest up after that a score and they looked dangerous every time they had the ball, especially Tiaan Loots who made big yards when ran.

Kelvin Davies got on the scoresheet with a try that was down to power rather than pace, as he crashed through some bodies. It was another conversion from Lang.

The RGC full-back also impressed in defensive work when he ran to collect a Llanharan kick and whilst under pressure he picked up a bouncing ball with one hand on the run.

TATA STEEL 17 v RGC 12

26th March, 2016 - report by Dave Jones, Daily Post

Pictures kindly supplied by Liz Bryan RGC suffered a blow to their hopes of a top four finish in Swa-lec Championship when they lost a tight game at Port Talbot on Saturday.

Having beaten the South Walians 57-0 at Colwyn Bay last No-vember, the Gogs made the long trip to the Saints’ ground with confidence, but it was a very different affair in the return.

In difficult conditions underfoot due to heavy rain, handling the slippy ball proved hazardous for both sides.

There was quite a feisty opening to the game with Tata badly missing an early penalty attempt.

And it was the visitors who struck first when following an attacking lineout Tom Hughes touched down under the posts, James Lang adding the conversion.

The home side were awarded a penalty for a scrum offence by the opposition and Diggy Bird split the posts for 7-3.

RGC’s Ziggy Radzius looked to be on his way for a try but put a foot in touch.

A fine tackle from Lang prevented a Steel score, but persistent pressure from the hosts eventually led to a penalty try which Bird

Gogs suffer blow to top four hopes

As the half time whistle approached try number arrived Cam Dav-ies and Loots combined before passing to Bagshaw for his 2nd try of the game. Lang kicked another conversion.

The points racked up in the 2nd half and the tries count racked up. Substitute winger Sam Jones sprinted down the line for the score and Lang made it 47 nil.

Lang picked up 2 tries in the half including one from the halfway line when his sidestep opened up the defence and he powered down the pitch for a great solo score.

The home side did get back in the game and worked the Gogs defence hard for spells, but some big tackles and a strong RGC wall of bodies stopped them crossing the whitewash. The old heads off Kelvin Davies and Bryn Williams made sure they kept focus on the defensive work.

In the end RGC ran in a further 3 tries from Danny Cross, Richard Hopkins and Cam Davies as the half wore on.

The Gogs didn’t stop playing for the full 80 minutes and Lang fin-ished the game with impressive 30 points, 2 tries and 10 conver-sions as they closed the gap on 3rd place Pontypool.

converted to make it 10-7 at half time.

The conditions were not helping the Gogs’ fluent style of rugby at all and while the travellers often got into good positions errors proved costly.

Then Tata took a big step towards the win when Ross Pritchard went over for a try which Bird improved to establish a 10-point lead.

To their credit, RGC never gave in and Radzius crossed for a try in the corner which went unconverted but reduced the arrears to five points.

And the Gogs pressed hard in the closing stages for the winning score, Tim Grey making a great break out of defence, but the final pass was intercepted and Tata Steel celebrated the victory.

Welshpool Under 10 v Newtown Under 10Rydal Penrhos Prep School won the Cooper Cup after a thrilling second leg display against Colwyn Bay.

The gifted rugby stars gave themselves plenty to do after the first encounters, but better weather and improved performances resulted in them retaining the trophy recently. The U8 side got them off to a flying start and triumphed 12-5 thanks to a majestic display from the tricky Biv Gilmartin, who was one of the standout performers on show.

This was further boosted by the U9 side, who came away with a hard fought 7-5 victory with fine displays from James Gilmartin, Henry Hibbert and Telor Jones. Rydal Penrhos’ U10 side ensured that the cup was retained after a 21-7 victory over their Bay rivals, with John Dick mustering a performance of genuine quality to get the home side over the line.

Needing a draw or victory to win the cup outright, the U11 side began well and Callan Earle gave them the lead with two stunning tries to put the home side 14-0 up. A fine team move resulted in Jonathan Osbourne crossing the line to ensure that Rydal Penrhos went into the interval with a 19-0 advantage. The visitors responded magnificently after the break and tries from Thomas Belcher and Will Austin brought them to within five points in the closing stages. Austin notched his second try of the game soon after, but Shae Clark missed a conversion to ensure that the final score finished 19 apiece much to the delight of the home fans.

Head of Boys’ games Jamie McLeod, said: “The lads made it hard for themselves in the first leg, but to come out and perform under pressure as this did was magnificent. “It was a real group effort and they showed tremendous character to not only retain, but win the Cooper Cup once again, so I am delighted.”

Bethesda Girls with the Welsh team

Nant Conwy U15 Girls 48 v Caernarfon U15 Girls 22 Following report kindly supplied by Eifion Harding.

The sizeable crowd who witnessed this pulsating encounter were kept thoroughly entertained throughout with the commitment and heart shown by all who took to the field being rightly praised. Nant took the honours on account of being better organised out wide although it took them a little time to realise where their most potent threat laid.

The opening exchanges saw individuals attacking with venom but the defences were coping well with numerous copybook tackles thwarting promising moves. Nant were first to open their account with livewire captain Heledd Roberts’s quick thinking capitalising on a transgression close to the Cofi line. Her quick tap and go saw her reach the try line and also convert. Before the Cofis could summon a riposte Heledd Roberts had repeated the feat to put the home team comfortably in the driving seat.

Gradually Caernarfon found a foothold in the Nant half and Number 8, Mali Quaeck went on an unstoppable charge from the back of a scrum to record the Cofis opening points.

Praise could be heaped on numerous individuals, Ffion Jones at scrum half for the Cofis was a revelation as regards tackling whilst Nant flanker Non Pyrs was highly effective in all facets of play. On the stroke of halftime good support play by back rower Mali Williams, another who was a thorn in Cofi ranks throughout meant that she was at hand to ground following a another Roberts break. The second half opened with the best team try of the evening. After regaining possession from the kick off the ball was swept swiftly along the backs for Ella White to ground out wide. The Co-fis to their credit kept plugging away, with a determined break by standoff Sophie Ellis from her own half out foxing everyone and although caught within inches of the try line she was able to reach and place the ball on the whitewash.

Nant standoff Sara Roberts was equally fleet of foot as she made the most of quick recycled ball to drift through the defence and score also allowing Heledd Roberts the conversion. With the ball being spread wider the Caernarfon backs were challenged but stern resistance was shown by the likes of Nel Hughes in the tackle area.

The ebb and flow persisted with constant harassing close to the Nant line leading to Caernarfon captain Amy Roberts being the first to react when the ball squirmed loose and thus grounded close to the posts meaning that Beth Whittle was also able to add the conversion. However another Nant short penalty charge drove at the heart of the Cofi defence and when they opted to go wide Lea Thomas found space out wide to squeeze in at the corner.

The Cofis themselves crossed the twenty point marker with their fourth try coming from rampaging Number 8 Mali Quaeck but couldn’t grasp the necessary cohesion to make further inroads and as all were beginning to tire a series of Nant drives saw Mali Williams notch her second try of the evening before the final play saw Mali Sion’s turn of speed bisect the defence to give Heledd Roberts another conversion.

With the advent of the RGC West Cluster Club imminent many on display should be certainties to feature prominently in the forth-coming months and will provide stern opposition to all who cross their path.

Kumari Tilakawardane caught up with North Walian Sian Williams who recently became Wales’s first professional rugby player when the RAF granted her ‘elite athlete’ status.

The announcement was of course huge for Sian personally, but also marked a defining moment in women’s rugby, and Welsh sport in general. Sian, who has been in the RAF for over seven years has been granted a two year release in order for her to concentrate fully on her rugby career. This means she’ll be training full time as a professional athlete at the Centre of Excellence in the Vale of Glamorgan, where she’ll work on core skills, prehab, strength and conditioning.

Sian’s shining international career has been long in the making: she started playing rugby aged 7 at Mold RFC and played alongside the boys until she was 12. “When I first started playing there weren’t any girl’s teams in North Wales, and very few Women’s teams,”

Sian says. Sian represented North Wales at U16 and U18 level while also playing at Chester, and then Wales U20 while she was at Bath Ladies. In 2011 she won her first cap for Wales, and has played club rugby for Worcester and represent-ed Wales in the sevens since 2012.As well as all that, for the last seven years Sian has also been in the RAF, and has represented their Women’s team and the Combined Services Women’s team. “Day to

day work consists of loading and unloading air craft from cargo planes to passenger jets, planning and executing the movement of RAF personnel and cargo by air, checking-in passengers and cargo flying out on operations, operating forklifts and other vehicles to load freight for transport, and planning air craft loads using logistical IT systems.”

That seems like quite enough to be dealing with, let alone also hav-ing an international rugby career. “It was hard work to juggle both working full time and playing rugby but luckily for me the RAF has been very supportive,” says Sian. “I love playing rugby so much that I wouldn’t let anything get in the way of getting to train-ing and playing every weekend. It just became normal to travel hours upon hours to training and games.”

Sian doesn’t think it’s more dif-ficult for North Walian girls and women to get the chance to play for Wales, despite frequently hav-ing to spend hours travelling up and down to Cardiff. “There are currently five Gogs in the squad, so the opportunities are available,” Sian notes. “I would say it takes a lot of hard work and dedica-tion – the girls who travel down from North Wales are our most dedicated players.”

Sian also points to the develop-ment going on in the North Wales region, particularly for girl’s and women’s rugby. “The opportuni-ties have grown massively,” she says. “Rachel Taylor [RGC West regional rugby coordinator] is do-ing a great job to grow the sport in North Wales.”

Sian has represented Wales since 2011 and Wales sevens since 2012, but says her proudest mo-ment to date came this past season when she captained the sevens team at the European Champion-ship and the World Series Quali-fiers.

There can be no doubt that the women’s game in Wales is improving constantly - Sian’s ap-pointment as our first professional female player perhaps best exem-plifies that, but results in recent years also demonstrate how much the game is growing here. Wales were ranked in the Top 10 nations in the world in the first ever Wom-en’s World Rankings, released by World Rugby last month.

“Our biggest ambition as a squad is to qualify for the World Cup in 2017 and get some good team performances and wins this Six Nations,” says Sian. So far this tournament Wales have won two of three, pulling off a huge win over France last weekend. Going into the match France were ranked second in the world, and the loss

to Wales knocked them down to third, showing how competitive the women’s game has become. Two wins is a great return so far, but with tough games against England and Italy to come, the Welsh squad fancy their chances going forward. “It’s about growing as a squad and getting as much game time as possible before go-ing into the World Cup so we have a wealth of experience going into that tournament.“

When I sat down with Wales captain Rachel Taylor, she talked about RGC’s facilities and we discussed how great it would be if Wales Women could play at Parc Eirias in the future (Wales’ home base this year is Neath). “Yes, the facilities up at RGC are amazing,” Sian agrees. “It would be great to have a home for Wales Women up in North Wales; it would help the growth of the game, and get more girls playing rugby.”

Until this (hopefully) happens, rugby fans in North Wales can watch live streams of Wales’ matches online.. “Media coverage plays a huge part in highlighting the game,” says Sian. “It’s also about gaining more support from people who may have not watched or been interested in women’s rugby before.”

Women’s rugby is one of the fast-est growing sports in the world, and the inclusion of sevens in the Olympics will generate an even bigger profile. North Wales now has a growing scene for girl’s and women’s rugby, and with Rachel Taylor involved in development it’s only a matter of time before even more talented Gogs will represent Wales.

Sian herself would like to help develop the next generations of Wales stars: “Fingers crossed it is a long way off but I would have to stay involved in rugby after finish-ing playing. I would like to go into coaching to help keep women’s rugby growing and help it receive the recognition it deserves.”

Lastly, I asked Sian if she had any pearls of wisdom for Gogs out there who might be thinking of taking up rugby for the first time and inevitably she gave a proper professional answer. “I’d just say give it ago and you will enjoy it. Playing rugby will grow your confidence, enhance your personal skills and you will make friends for life.”

Everyone in North Wales can be massively proud of Sian making history, and I for one can’t wait to see what she’ll achieve next.

New kit and washing machine already under their belts, they now go forward in the competition with the chance to win a rugby legend training session.

A chance entry into a Facebook competition organised by AEG Grassroots Rugby has won Dolgellau RFC’s newly formed girls rugby team with a momentous amount of kit and a new top of the range AEG washing machine to clean it with.

The Marian girls were one of twenty teams country wide to win the kit and also gain entry into the next stage of the competition. Amongst the bundle of full Canterbury rugby strip which consisted of shirts , shorts and socks, were twenty boot bags, water bottles, two ball bags and twenty balls.

Along with the kit the club also won a top of the range AEG wash-ing machine which has been put to good use considering the winter weather conditions of North Wales pitches.

But it hasn’t all finished there as the girls are now entering the next phase of the competition which could see them as one of the top three clubs to win a training session at the Marian Ground with a rugby legend. Last years legends included Will Greenwood, Scott Quinnell, and Austin Healey.

They have now provided a required team shot and a hundred supporting words to enter them into the next part of the competi-tion. In true Mawddach Valley tradition the girls have put together

the hundred words to a stunning vocal parody of the Welsh rugby song ‘Bread of Heaven’. It was videoed at Ysgol Y Gader last Wednesday.

The newly-established club begins to thrive and then suddenly foldsSeptember 1928 to May 1934

The AGM of the 1933-34 season was held on 18 May 1933 at the Anchor Inn, now the headquarters of the club. It wa chaired by J. Rice-Jones in the absence of the Presi-dent W. T. A. Jones. His wise pre-season words of advice to the players were: ‘May I suggest players start vigorous training quite early so that they are in fine fettle when they contest their first game. Rugby is not like playing ping-pong, Yo-Yo or any-thing of that kind, but a hard and exhaus-tive struggle and it behoves everybody who take part in it to respond to the call of the captain. That can only be effected by per-sistent training and practice’. Modern senti-ments indeed!

The secretary reported a successful sea-son both from the financial and teh playing point of view. The finances were good be-cause of the success of the Annual Dance. Players had been asked to subscribe one shilling per head for home and away games for the first time. This had resulted in a total of £9.15.0. Receipts amounted to £50/6/2 with £28/5/0 paid for transport. £5 was paid for ground rental.

The first game was a local derby which was won by the School. The game was reported to have had its full quote of keenness which sometimes developed into overzealous-ness. Six players were engaged in a North

Wales trial at Wrexham when a depleted side lost to Oswestry in November. Games were lost to Old Caldeians and Colwyn Bay but a convincing win over Wrexham by 26 points to 0 gave much confidence to the team.

Following the North Wales trial, Ken Rob-erts was selected for further honours for N Wales at Bridgend. The Boxing Day fixture against Old Birkonians resulted in a 12 points to 0 victory.

In the new year, Wrexham exacted revenge by beating 14-man Ruthin side by 6 points to nil. January and February resulted in de-pleted sides being defeated by Welshpool and Wrexham. In the Wrexham game three Ruthin School masters turned out for the Town side. A match was postponed in late February to allow players to travel to Edin-burgh to watch the Scotland v Wales inter-national match. Nothing changes!

A Charity match was organised by the Headmaster of Ruthin School, this time with a Watkin Thomas XV taking on a Mor-gan Phillips XV. The match was played in front of the Lord Lt. of Denbighshire whose charity would provide clothing for the un-employed families of Denbighshire. Tom Leathes, the auctioneer’s son, who had tri-als for English Schools, was a schoolboy at Ruthin School at the time and is the only player we were able to find who represent-ed the Distric team in the 1930s. He now lives in Pentre Coch and was able to pro-vide us with much more useful information about the club in the early days.

Ruthin played their last five matches of the season in March 1934 winning three and losing two. The team selected to play in this match on 3 March 1934 was:

Ken Roberts, Roy Roberts, J. W. Roberts, T. G. Jones, R. A. Williams, A. J. Caley, Pe-ter Hughes, F. Whelan, R. P. Williams, T. M. Jones, A. Findlay, D. Williams, Hollister Owen.

Sadly, it was the last match to be played by Ruthin Rugby Club until it re-formed in 1960. Unfortunately, and somewhat un-expectedly, due to the financial climate in the mid-1930s, the committee felt it had no option but to wind the club up for the time being.

In the last recorded committee meeting held on 8 June, 1934, the following simple statement was recorded by J. Rice-Jones, the club chairman: ‘The continuance of the club was viewed from all angles and found to be undesirable.’

The Denbighshire Free Press carried the following report about the club’s demise in October 1934:

‘Lovers of the game locally will regret the decision at a general meeting of members to wind up the Ruthin and District Rugby Club. Financially there has been little cause for anxiety all along, the chief barrier to progress being the limited playing strength of the club. In recent seasons it has been increasingly difficult to raise a side having regard to the fact that young men in the dis-trict do not appear to be sufficiently inter-ested to take up the game, the committee had no alternative but to disband the club. Rugby football has undoubtedly made good strides in North Wales and Ruthin Rugby Club has done much to foster the game in the county of Denbigh. This season a new club has been formed in Mold and on Saturday last Mold were assisted by broth-ers Ken and Roy Roberts. We understand that a few other club members have been asked to play for the new club’.

Under the economic recession which was gripping the country in the mid-1930s it is hardly surprising that players, many of whom were self-employed or had been forced to move from the area to find work, felt unable to commit themselves to the club.

Rupert Moon resignation - WRU Chief makes shockannouncement at North Wales meetingRGC’s Rupert Moon has resigned from his position to move to pastures new and will complete his contract within the next two weeks.

WRU Chief Executive, Martyn Phillips, shocked the North Wales rugby fraternity tonight at the NWRU Council meet-ing when he announced that Rupert Moon had tendered his resignation and would be leaving the Region in the next couple of weeks. Martyn publicly thanked Rupert for all his tremendous hard work during his time in North Wales and stated that it was hoped that a replacement for Rupert could be found by the end of the season. Phil Davies would continue in his current role.

Alwyn Jones, North Wales’ elected member on the WRU Board stated: ‘It is no coincidence that the profile of the game in North Wales has increased dramatically in the time that Rupert has been with us. He will be a hard act to follow and, on behalf of all those involved in rugby in North and Mid Wales, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Rupert and wish him well for the future’.

For once the conditions were favourable enough to allow these most dedicated of players to show what they are capable of and for the loyal band of supporters it soon became apparent that there is plenty of po-tential at hand to feed the prospective Pirates Cluster Club in a months time. Some of the players on view were clearly far more experienced than others but all were eager to learn and it was only the habit of support-ing the ball carrier continuously that ensured that Caernarfon were able to draw clear on the scoreboard.

A brisk opening period saw the Cofis on the attack with a clean Lucy Owen break bringing play deep into Bethesda territory and with good support and link play by Amy Roberts she freed centre Elan Jones to score the opening try. Fellow prop Cara Usher then recycled well for ever dominant stand off Sophie Ellis to draw in the cover before releas-ing fullback Beth Whittle who outsprinted the rest to score close to the posts and convert.

Bethesda drew some comfort from the willingness of evasive centre Stephanie Parry to attack at speed but the tackling of Cofi scrumhalf Ffion Jones was a revelation therefore nullifying many attacks at base. Sophie Ellis then broke through from the base of the scrum to score granting Beth Whittle another conversion. Ellis was again in on the act as she gathered a loose ball and popped the ball to inside centre Mar-tha Morgan for another five pointer.

Pesda scrumhalf Efa Glain was industrious throughout and linked well with standoff Erin Wyn who often got the better of the first would be tackler and was instrumental in putting her team on the front foot so allowing fullback Ceri Williams to finally break Cofi resistance and score a much deserved try following a determined charge.

Prominent Number 8 Mali Quaeck then scored following a pick up from the base of a scrum before a debut charge from Shannon Clark allowed Sophie Ellis to feed Amy Roberts who grounded deftly despite the close attention of numerous tacklers.

During the second half the Cofis maintained the pressure and were able to add to the score line with another Mali Quaeck charge. Wing Elin Jones then drifted into midfield and when finally stopped found Elan Jones at hand to gain her second five pointer.

With players beginning to tire, more gaps appeared and the final points of a thoroughly entertaining encounter saw Amy Roberts yet again sup-port Mali Quaeck to find herself free and score out wide. Good work by Bethesda’s Penny Carr led to another break by Stephanie Parry only for Mali Quaeck to track back all of fifty meters to halt her inches short.

The final Caernarfon total comprised of the five from nine conversions that Beth Whittle succeeded to convert.
