Preparing all students for success in a changing world
Committee met monthly to unpack factors associated with academic pressure and student stress
Student interviews and parent focus groups were used to collect feedback regarding what was causing student stress and ways to possibly address these concerns
Feedback was analyzed by the committee
A variety of in school and out of school factors caused students stress
Root causes of these factors were identified and recommendations emerged
Two parallel paths to address root causes Provide mindfulness/stress management training
for students Examine systemic factors that are currently
contributing to student stress
Grade weighting at the high school level School start times Homework Testing
Grade weighting at the high school level School start times Homework Testing
*tackle the highlighted items first and make potential
recommendations by the end of January
Honors and AP level courses are currently weighted which boosts a student’s GPA
Many students “game” the system by focusing only on courses that are weighted
Students do not select courses that may suit their future needs more appropriately
This encourages grade and course acceleration Fosters the myth that students need to take as
many of these courses as possible to get into college
Colleges and universities remove the grade weights when students apply
Concepts Eliminate weighted grades completely Cap the number of courses a student can
receive weighted grades for each year
Timing Implement for all students beginning in ‘18-19
school year Implement for incoming 9th graders in ‘18-19
and phase in over four years
