SCOPE

This specification defines minimum technical requirements for design,fabrication, inspection, and testing of heavy duty centrifugal pumps.

INTRODUCTION

1. Requirements for centrifugal pumps are based on API 610, “Centrifugal Pumpsfor Petroleum, Heavy Duty Chemical, and Gas Industry Services”, EighthEdition, 1995.

2. Requirements of this specification are supplementary to API 610.

3. Paragraph numbers correspond to API Standard 610.

4. Requirements are identified as additions (“ADD”), replacements (“REPLACE”),and deletions (“DELETE”) to API 610.

5. Requirements of API 610 that are not revised remain applicable.

SECTION 1 - GENERAL

1.1 Scope

1.1.3 ADD

1. Reasonable savings shall be available (including costs ofinstallation and operation).

2. Vertical in-line pumps may be quoted, provided that all ofthe following conditions are met:

a. Purchaser will approve and specify acceptance of anin-line pump for service quoted.

b. Pump shall have a rigid spacer coupling. Pump shallnot be an integral shaft type.

c. Seal flushing shall prevent vapor from accumulating inseal zone. Seal flushing line shall have a strainer.

d. Maximum shaft deflection at throat bushing during mostsevere operating conditions shall be furnished.

e. Maximum throat loading under most severe operatingconditions shall be furnished.

f. Pump shall have replaceable throat bushing and wearrings.

g. Above 50 hp, motor shall be 1800 rpm or less.

h. Mechanical seal shall be replaceable withoutdisassembling pump.

i. Pump shall be motor driven. If a turbine drive isrequired, unit shall be horizontal.

3. If pumpage is highly erosive or corrosive or pumpagetemperature is 200°F or above, pumps shall not be verticalin-line type.

1.1.4 ADD

1. API and medium duty chemical process pumps will beevaluated by Purchaser.

2. Evaluation will be based on:

a. Initial pump cost.

b. Piping system cost differential resulting fromdifferent allowable forces and moments between APIand medium duty chemical process pumps.

1.3 Conflicting Requirements

1. Material requisition package (purchase order andsupplemental instructions).

2. This specification and data sheets.

4. Other referenced specifications, codes, practices, andstandards.

1.4 Definition of Terms

ADD

1.4.58 Light Liquid Service

Light liquid service is service in which the pumped liquid meetsboth of the following:

1. Vapor pressure of any component is greater than 0.044 psiaat 68°F.

2. Total concentration of any component of liquid is equal toor greater than 20% by weight.

The above definition shall be used unless otherwisespecified by government specifications or regulations inaccordance with API 610 paragraph 1.5.2.

1.4.59 Special Purpose Pump

A horizontal multistage pump over 1000 hp operating at 3600 rpmor greater.

SECTION 2 - BASIC DESIGN

2.1 General

2.1.1 ADD

The pump, gear, and pump driver manufacturers shall confirm thatthe quoted equipment design is proven. Manufacturer shall haveoperating experience with the same equipment in similar service.

2.1.4 ADD

1. Pumps shall be capable of at least a 10% head increase atrated condition by the installation of a new impeller.

2. The diameter of the impeller(s) provided shall not begreater than 95% of the maximum impeller diameter that maybe installed in the pump.

2.1.6 ADD

“Built-in” seal designs shall not be acceptable.

2.1.9 ADD

1. Single stage pumps in hydrocarbon service shall preferablyhave a suction specific speed of less than 11,000.

2. Horizontal multistage pumps in hydrocarbon service shallpreferably have a suction specific speed of less than7,000.

3. Vertical multistage pumps in hydrocarbon service shallpreferably have a suction specific speed of less than10,000.

4. Pumps in hydrocarbon service shall not have a suctionspecific speed that exceeds 12,000.

5. Pumps in hydrocarbon service with a suction specific speedbetween 11,000 and 12,000 (inclusive) shall be avoided.

6. Pumps in water or caustic service shall preferably have asuction specific speed of less than 10,000.

7. Pumps in water or caustic service shall not have a suctionspecific speed that exceeds 11,000.

8. Pumps in water or caustic service with a suction specificspeed between 10,000 and 11,000 (inclusive) shall beavoided.

9. If range of 10,000 to 11,000 for water or caustic serviceor 11,000 to 12,000 for hydrocarbon service is considered,the following shall be evaluated:

a. Impeller metallurgy.

b. Operating range with regard to best efficiency point.

c. Required minimum flow bypass rates (initialinstallation and operating costs).

d. Energy level.

e. Available NPSH.

10. If alternate pumps are available, pump with lowest suctionspecific speed shall be included in proposal.

2.1.11 ADD

The 10% head rise requirement for parallel pump operation may bereduced for multistage pumps to avoid excessive shutoff head.

2.1.20 REPLACE THE FOLLOWING PARAMETERS WITH

Maximum pressure drop (10 psi)

Fouling factor on waterside (0.003 hr x ft2 x °F/Btu)

2.1.29 ADD

Climatic design conditions shall comply with GEMS G-3D.

ADD

2.1.30 1. Single and two stage pumps operating at temperatures lessthan 300°F and three stage and more pumps operating attemperatures less than 200°F shall be suitable forinstantaneous start-up from ambient temperature.

2. For higher operating temperatures, a start-up procedurethat will ensure that rapid heat-up does not damage pump,

accessories, or seals shall be provided in the proposaland as part of the operating procedures manual.

3. Single stage overhung pumps operating above 2950 rpm with16 inch and larger impellers.

2.1.31 Pumps shall be selected based on:

1. Initial quoted price.

2. Operating cost.

3. Operating range with regard to best efficiency point.

4. Use of minimum flow bypass requirements (initial andoperating).

5. Maintenance.

6. Spare parts.

2.1.32 Except for small chemical injection pumps, tandem pumpingarrangement with one driver driving two or more pumps shall notbe used.

2.1.33 1. Minimum flow bypass, if required for satisfactory operationof quoted pump, shall be stated.

2. Actual operating capacity (above minimum continuous stableflow) shall be recommended for pumps requiring minimumflow bypass.

3. Impellers shall be sized to develop required differentialheat at recommended capacity.

2.1.34 Pumps and mechanical seals shall be designed for continuousoperation at a minimum of 50°F higher than specified operatingtemperature.

2.1.35 1. Single and two stage pumps at operating temperatures lessthan 300°F and multistage pumps at operating temperaturesless than 200°F shall be suitable for instantaneous start-upfrom ambient to full operating temperature.

2. For higher operating temperatures, the following shall beincluded in proposal and as part of operating manual toensure that pump does not incur damage due to rapid heatup:

a. Suitable start-up procedure.

b. Required monitoring equipment, including mechanicalseal(s).

2.1.36 Cooling water service pumps shall be of horizontally splitcasing construction with side suction and discharge nozzles.

2.1.37 Single volute pumps may be quoted only if normal capacity flowrate is at least 50% of pump’s best efficiency point flow withrated impeller diameter.

2.1.38 Cylindrical dowels or rabbeted fits shall be used to aligncasing components or casing and cover and to facilitatedisassembly and reassembly.

2.2 Pressure Casings

2.2.4 ADD

All parts of pressure casing for all pumps shall be designed for

the maximum discharge pressure, including barrel, double casing,and multistage pumps.

2.2.6 ADD

1. If operating requirements exceed the limitations of thistype design, manufacturer shall submit a recommendationfor a multistage, between bearing design pump.

2. If cost savings are significant and Supplier has operatingexperience, axially split cases for large pumps may be bidas an alternate for the conditions specified above,subject to specific Purchaser approval.

2.2.9 ADD

Center line supported pumps operating above 300°F shall have acasing guide or key slot along the center line and at eachsupport pedestal.

2.2.14 1. Multistage volute type pumps shall have each voluteoriented 180° from the preceding volute.

2. Pumps with 3 inch and larger discharge connections shallhave dual volute casings.

3. Pumps with 2.5 inch and smaller discharge connectionsshall have single volute casings.

4. Single volute pumps may be quoted only if normal designcapacity flow rate is at least 50% of the pump’s bestefficiency point flow with rated impeller diameter.

2.3 Nozzle and Pressure Casing Connections

2.3.3 Pressure Casing Connections

2.3.3.4 REPLACE WITH

1. Casing openings for piping connections shall comply withthe following table and shall be flanged.

2. If cast flanged openings are impractical, openings may beterminated with a welding neck or socket weld flange.

2.3.3.5 REPLACE WITH

1. Connections to casing shall comply with pump casingmaterial requirements, except that 11%-13% Cr pumps shallhave ASTM A 335, Gr P9 nipples, threaded and seal welded.

2. Threaded connection shall be seal welded. Seal weldingshall not be performed on cast iron equipment.

3. Nipple and flange materials shall comply with casingmaterial requirements rather than connected pipingmaterial requirements.

2.3.3.7 ADD

1. Plugs shall be seal welded.

2. Plugs that may require subsequent removal or plugs in castiron casing shall be 316 SS minimum, round head plugs,with shanks at least 1-1/2 inches long.

3. Threads shall be lubricated.

4. Tape shall be applied to threads of plugs inserted intooil passages.

5. Plugs shall not be plastic.

2.3.3.10 ADD

Flanged low point drains shall be provided in the followingservices:

1. Liquids that are toxic or injurious to personnel.

2. Liquids that will freeze or solidify at or above theminimum ambient temperature.

2.3.3.11 DELETE

“When specified”.

ADD

2.3.3.12 Purchaser connections shall be accessible for disassemblywithout moving equipment.

2.5 Rotors

2.5.1 ADD

An open impeller may be offered as an alternate quote inservices subject to crystallization at pumping temperature.

2.5.7 ADD

1. If alternate shaft diameters are available, the largershaft shall be included in proposal and provided.

2. The following shall be stated in the proposal:

a. Shaft diameter under the shaft mechanical seal sleeve.

b. For single stage overhung pumps, axial distance fromthe radial bearing center line to the mid point atthe impeller discharge area at the impeller outsidediameter.

c. For single stage double suction and multistage betweenbearing pumps, distance between bearing center lines.

ADD

2.5.11 Shafts and impellers shall not be plated for repair purposes.Repairs to rotating elements shall be subject to Purchaserreview and approval. For special purpose pumps, each rotor shallbe clearly marked with a unique identification number. Thenumber shall be on the end opposite the coupling.

2.6 Wear Rings and Running Clearances

2.6.4.3 1. Pumps operating with viscous fluids greater than 850 SSU orhot oil service at 400°F and above shall have wear ringclearances a minimum of 0.005 inch greater than those shownin Table 2.2.

2. Pump performance shall be based on the greater clearance.

2.7 Mechanical Shaft Seals

2.7.1 REPLACE WITH

1. Mechanical seals provided shall be replaceable withoutdisassembling pump.

2. Mechanical seals shall be provided for all applications,except as follows:

a. Shaft packing shall be provided if product containsabrasive particles and it is not possible to providea clean flush liquid.

b. Shaft packing shall be provided if pumped productcomposition, temperature, and/or gravity is notwithin the range in which mechanical seals can beexpected to operate satisfactorily.

c. Shaft packing shall be provided for flare drumcondensate service.

d. If packing is provided for nonflammable ornonhazardous services, refer to Appendix C.

3. A tandem seal arrangement shall be provided if specifiedon the data sheet or if pumped product:

a. Is benzene, gasoline, or lighter hydrocarbons.

b. Will auto-ignite.

c. Will vaporize upon exposure to atmosphere.

The seals provided and the seal arrangement shall besubject to specific Purchaser approval.

The barrier fluid system shall have a sensor that willdetect failure of the seal system, the barrier fluidsystem, or both. The non-pressurized fluid barrier systemshall be vented to the flare.

4. A high temperature metal bellows seal with graphite foilshall be provided if pumped product temperature is above300°F. The seals provided and the seal arrangement shallbe subject to specific Purchaser approval.

5. The standard mechanical seal face combination shall besolid (no thin applied coatings) silicon carbide (reactionbonded with 10% or less for silicon) and carbon graphite.

6. Seal materials not specified shall be:

a. In accordance with seal manufacturer recommendations.

b. Standardized as far as possible to minimize spareparts inventories.

7. Mechanical seals shall be capable of withstanding apressure not less than maximum pump discharge pressure.

2.7.3.17 DELETE

“When specified”.

ADD

1. A low pressure steam quench shall be used if:

a. Pumped product is flammable or toxic.

b. Product temperature exceeds 500°F.c. Recommended by seal or pump manufacturer.

d. Product leakage may leave coke deposits or solidify atambient conditions.

e. Product is near its atmospheric ignition temperature.

2. Water quench shall be provided if the pumped product isflammable or toxic and product temperature is below 500°F.

3. Water quench may be omitted if:

a. Cooling water is not otherwise required at the pump.

b. Pumped product is not expected to leave a watersoluble deposit at the seal face on the shaft.

c. Product is strong acid.

4. Pumps operating above 350°F or in hot water service shallhave seal flush coolers to maintain a maximum temperatureof 180°F in seal chamber without the use of stuffing boxjacket cooling.

2.7.3.18 ADD

Throat bushings shall:

1. Be non-galling.

2. Not extend within 1/8 inch of bottoming ring.

2.7.3.19 ADD

1. If a high pressure source requires pressure reduction in aseal recirculation system, the pressure shall be reducedwith an orifice in the piping.

2. Needle valves shall not be used.

3. Seal flush connections, whether in a seal gland or in thebody of a pump, shall enter the seal chamber in closeproximity to the seal faces.

4. Mechanical seal piping and appurtenances required by eachof the selected sealing plans shown in Appendix D of API610 shall be provided.

2.7.3.20 ADD

1. Throttle bushing shall be bronze in sweet service andmonel in sour services or in other services unsuitable forbronze.

2. Throttle bushings shall be required on the standardunpressurized dual mechanical seal.

2.7.3.21 Gland plates shall be piloted and contain locating pin to ensurethat gland plate will mate with pump in one position only.

2.8 Dynamics

2.8.1 ADD

1. For special purpose pumps or if specified on data sheet, alateral critical analysis shall be performed for eachmachine.

2. Calculated critical speeds shall be determined on thebasis of the intersection of the critical speed modes withthe support stiffness.

3. Critical speeds above the maximum design limit speed shallbe the calculated critical speeds.

Note: Concern is with calculated critical speeds and actualcritical speeds observed during running tests.

2.8.2 Torsional Analysis

2.8.2.1 REPLACE a. WITH

750 kW (1000 hp) or higher.

ADD

e. Special purpose pumps.

f. Dual drive pumps.

g. Pumps with a gearbox.

Train and train component natural frequencies, such as lateralcritical speeds (natural frequencies) of driver, couplings, anddriven equipment; system torsional; and coupling axialfrequencies, shall be indicated.

2.8.2.2 ADD

1. Operating speed of variable speed pumps shall be fromminimum governor setting to maximum continuous speed.

2. Margins shall be met with new and worn (double standardnew clearances) critical speeds.

3. Critical speeds shall be “wet” criticals, i.e., criticalscalculated with pump pumping specified fluid.

2.8.2.3 ADD

2. Antifriction bearing pumps shall have vibration measuredon bearing housing (vertical, horizontal, and axialdirections).

3. Name, model number, and latest calibration date ofvibration transducers and analyzer used for vibrationmeasurements shall be recorded on the test log.

4. If proximity probes are used, slow-roll runout at eachprobe shall be measured and recorded.

2.9 Bearings and Bearing Housings

2.9.1 Bearings

2.9.1.1 ADD

1. If tilting pad bearings are supplied, a bearing mandreland checking procedure shall be provided to determine theshaft bearing clearance.

2. Thrust collars shall be removable for seal replacement.

3. Special purpose pumps and other pumps specified on datasheet shall have hydrodynamic radial bearings.

2.9.1.2 ADD

For special purpose pumps, the following shall apply:

1. For special purpose pumps, pump active and inactive thrustbearing load shall be calculated with worn seals (at leastdouble standard clearance) and coupling lockup and shallnot exceed 50% of bearing manufacturer’s rated thrustbearing load capacity or 50% of loading shown in AppendixB of API 612, whichever is less.

2. Load carrying capability shall be based on the specificapplication regarding speed, lubricant, and minimumlubricant temperature of 120°F.

3. Sizing basis shall be subject to Purchaser review andapproval.

4. The thrust bearing shall be renewable without removal ofthe pump rotor.

5. Michelle type thrust bearings shall not be rated greaterthan the equivalent self leveling, Kingsbury thrustbearings.

6. Maximum load (two times new initial internal clearances)calculated shall be used in selecting antifriction

2.11 Materials

2.11.2 Castings

2.11.2.1 ADD

For special purpose pumps, all pressure containing castingsshall be visually examined to MSS-SP-55 at the foundry prior toany other non-destructive testing. Repairs shall be performedat the foundry using Purchaser approved welding procedures.

2.11.2.3.1 ADD

1. Steel castings may be repaired by welding in accordancewith applicable ASTM specification.

2. Chaplets not completely fused into pressure castings andother defects in castings other than cast iron shall bereplaced by weld metal equivalent to casting composition.

3. Repairs shall not be performed by any other method.

4. Casting shall be heat treated following any repairs.

2.11.2.3.2 ADD

Only cast gray iron or nodular iron in water service less than200°F may be repaired by plugging.

2.11.3 Welding

2.11.3.1 ADD

1. Welding shall comply with GEMS G-7M.

2. Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) shall not be used for castingrepair or attachment welding.

3. Welding and heat treatment procedures for 11-13% Cr pumpsshall be submitted by pump Supplier for Purchaser reviewbefore fabrication begins.

4. Weld metal and heat affected zones shall comply withhardness limits of 225 BHN for alloys up to 2.25 Cr-1 Moand 241 BHN for 2.25 Cr-1 Mo and above.

2.11.3.4.2 ADD

After heat treatment and again after final machining, welds thathave been back chipped or gouged shall be magnetic particleinspected comply with ASTM E 709. All visible linear indicationsshall be completely removed, repaired and re-examined.

2.11.3.5.6 REPLACE WITH

1. Suction and discharge nozzle welds shall be 100%radiographed for all alloy castings and for carbon steelcastings operating in excess of 500 psig or 500°F.

2. Carbon steel castings of lesser pressure or temperaturerating shall be magnetic particle inspected.

3. All welds requiring radiography shall be checked prior tomachining using fine grain film.

4. Radiography and interpretation shall be to ASME SectionVIII Division I, paragraphs UW51, UW52, and UW53standards.

5. If specifically approved by Purchaser, ultrasonics orother methods may be considered.

6. Suction and discharge nozzle attachment welds shall be100% radiographed for alloy casings and for carbon steelcasings in excess of 500 psig or 500°F.

7. Carbon steel casings of less rating shall be magneticparticle inspected.

2.11.3.5.7 Connection welds shall be continuous fluorescent wet magneticparticle inspected.

2.11.3.5.8 Special purpose pumps shall have a weld map.

2.11.4 Low Temperature

2.11.4.2 ADD

For services with operating temperatures below -20°F, the partsindicated below shall have impact strength of not less than 15ft-lb Charpy V notch, for any specimen, in accordance with ASTME 23 at lowest temperature:

1. Casings, including nozzles, flanges, and weldments.

2. Impellers, including cover, disc, blades, and welds.

3. Shafts.

SECTION 3 - ACCESSORIES

3.1 Drivers

3.1.1 ADD

Motors shall comply with GEMS L-2M, L-3M, or L-5M.

3.1.4 ADD

1. Motor horsepower shall cover the curve of the impellerfurnished.

2. The motor’s service factor shall not be used to cover thecurve of the impeller furnished.

3. If this requirement oversizes the driver (except for unitsoperating in parallel), an alternate quotation conformingto the horsepower requirements of paragraph 3.1.1 shall besubmitted.

4. Unless approved otherwise, motors for centrifugal pumpsshall not have fractional horsepower.

3.1.5 ADD

Construction in cryogenic service shall be stainless steel.

3.1.6 ADD

1. The motor driver starting torque capability at 80% voltageshall exceed the speed-torque requirements of the drivenequipment by a minimum of 10% along all points on thedriven equipment speed-torque curve.

2. For special purpose pumps, a driven equipment speed torquecurve superimposed on the motor driver starting torquecurve shall be submitted for approval by Purchaser.

3.1.8 ADD

1. Vertical pumps or vertical “in line” pumps shall havevertical motors

2. For vertical “in line” pumps, drive motors above 75 hpshall be 1800 rpm or less.

3.1.9 ADD

1. Vertical steam turbines shall not be acceptable.

3.1.13 1. Motors with hydrodynamic bearings shall have magneticcenter indicators.

2. Dual drive (motor and turbine driven) pumps shall use aone way freestanding automatic clutch between pump andturbine. Turbine and speed reducer (if used) shall be freewheeling.

3. Dual drive (motor and turbine driven) pumps shall beinstalled such that pump is driven from opposite ends.

3.2 Couplings and Guards

3.2.2 ADD

1. General purpose pump couplings shall be Koppers, Thomas(with stainless steel discs), Waldron, or Purchaserapproved equal.

2. For special purpose pumps, connections between pump anddriver shall be:

a. Suitable forged steel, flexible, spacer type couplingswith tapered (1/2 degree angle per side) hydraulicfit hubs locked in place.

b. Couplings shall be Lucas contoured diaphragm.

c. Couplings shall allow continuous operation with doublethe estimated cold to hot thermal growthmisalignment.

d. Disk natural frequencies of Lucas couplings shall be aminimum of 10% away from operating speed range.

e. Lowest lateral speed of coupling/spacer shall be aminimum of 20% above maximum continuous speed.

3. One common hydraulic coupling mounting fixture shall beused for all train components.

4. Coupling guards and bearing housings for Lucas contoureddiaphragm couplings shall be designed for installation ofa continuous lubricated coupling.

5. Supply and drain connections shall be in bottom half ofcoupling guard.

6. External feed and drain lines for lubricated couplingsshall be classed as auxiliary piping.

7. Bellows shall not flexible diaphragm expansion type.

8. Coupling guards shall be designed to limit the skintemperature.

3.2.8 ADD

1. Special purpose pumps shall have couplings and coupling

2. Component residual unbalance shall be U = 4 W/N or 0.01ounce-inch, whichever is less.

4. Above 3500 rpm or 500 horsepower, couplings shall bedynamically balanced in accordance with AGMA 515, Class 9.

3.2.9 ADD

1. “As set” dimensions for limited end float couplings shallbe furnished.

2. If a limited end float coupling is required, motorprovided shall have minimum end play of 1/2 inch.

3.2.12 ADD

1. Coupling guards shall be easily removable withoutdisturbing coupled equipment.

2. Coupling guards shall be non-corrosive, non-sparkingcolor-fast fiberglass.

ADD

3.2.13 For special purpose pumps, the following shall apply:

1. Coupling elastometers shall be neoprene or hytrel.

2. The pump shaft and coupling stresses shall be determinedon the basis of the potential maximum horsepower of thedriver or the pullout torque of the motor.

3. Couplings and coupling-to-shaft junctures shall be capableof continuous operation at 175% of the maximum continuoustorque. Maximum continuous torque is maximum continuouspotential horsepower turbine drives and 225% of full loadtorque of induction motor drivers.

4. The horsepower rating of the coupling to shaft junctionfor each shaft end in the pump train shall be at leastequal to the horsepower rating of the respective coupling.

5. Blueing tapes shall be taken in accordance with AppendixH.

6. Each different size shaft end of pump train shall have amatched set(s) of ring and plug gages in accordance withAPI 671, Appendix F.

7. Coupling guard vent required by API 671, paragraph C.4.3,shall have oil mist eliminator/filter breather.

8. Space coupling and spacer, if specified, shall be paintedwith an identifying yellow band.

3.3 Baseplates

3.3.1 ADD

Baseplates shall comply with Drawing 1S-1855, Rev. A, andparagraph 3.3.8.

3.3.2 ADD

1. Pump baseplates and elevated equipment supports shall befabricated from steel.

3.3.4 ADD

b. A minimum of 1-1/4 inches high.

2. If the mounting plate is excessively high, a boxedpedestal fabricated from 1 inch plate with a solid steelsingle plate (minimum 1-1/4 inches) top baseplate deckshall be used.

3. Pipe columns with rails or plates for driver mountingshall be unacceptable.

4. Mounting bolts for all components shall be sized such thata minimum of 3/16 inch radial difference is providedbetween the bolt and the hole diameter in the equipmentfeet.

5. Pump and driver shall be aligned by the pump manufacturerprior to shipment.

3.3.7 ADD

1. Corner seams and structural steel member attachment weldsshall be made using full penetration welds.

2. Baseplate decks shall:

a. Be fabricated as a minimum from 1/2 inch steel plate.

b. Cover the entire top frame.

3. Deflection of the baseplate deck shall be zero with pumpfully mounted.

4. Baseplate frame shall be fabricated from structural steelmembers fully enclosing the frame peripheral with aminimum of four structural steel cross members located tosupport the pump, gear, and driver, not to exceed 3 feetbetween cross members.

3.3.8 ADD

Outside edge of grout holes shall be a maximum of 18 inches fromany wall of the bulkhead section served.

3.3.9 ADD

Each bulkhead section of frame covered by deck shall have aminimum of one 4-inch diameter grout hole.

3.3.13 REPLACE WITH

Pedestal cooling shall not be required.

3.3.14 ADD

1. Alignment positioning screws shall be provided tofacilitate longitudinal and transverse horizontaladjustments for each drive train component.

2. Equipment feet shall be drilled with pilot holes for usein final dowelling.

3.3.20 ADD

Fasteners for attaching the components to the baseplate and thebaseplate jackscrews shall be provided.

3.4 Instrumentation

3.4.3 Vibration, Position, and Temperature Detectors

3.4.3.1 ADD

For special purpose pumps with hydrodynamic bearings and allother pumps specified on data sheets, the following shall beprovided:

1. Two radial vibration detectors located 90° apart withineach bearing housing.

2. Two axial position probes that sense surfaces not greaterthan 6 inches from thrust collar at thrust end of eachmachine.

3. One event probe per revolution in each machine.

ADD

3.4.3.1.1 1. For special purpose pumps, pumps specified in paragraphs3.4.3.1, 3.4.3.4, and 3.4.3.5, and pumps specified on thedata sheets, noncontacting vibration, axial positiontransducers, and accelerometers shall be provided.

2. Detectors and their mountings and calibration shall beprovided, installed, and tested in accordance with API 670and 678.

3. Two radial vibration detectors shall be located 90 degreesapart at each bearing housing.

4. Accelerometers shall be identical and maintain theiraccuracy to 250°F. The system shall consist ofaccelerometer, mounting blocks, protective covers,extension cables, interface modules, and conduit.

3.4.3.1.2 1. Each axial position probe shall monitor a different axiallylocated surface (in accordance with API 670, Figure 13).

2. Each speed shall have one reference probe.

3.4.3.1.3 Each radial probe’s position shall be located such that probewill sense an unplated ground surface with no more than 0.25 miltotal mechanical and electrical runout and not closer than twoprobe tip diameters from any change in shaft diameter or objectfor all conditions of rotor axial float and thermal expansion.

3.4.3.1.4 1. Probes shall be installed in removable probe holders.

2. Holder shall be mechanically locked to bearing housing.

3. Probe shall be mechanically locked in holder.

4. Holder’s sleeve shall be removable as a unit while pump isrunning.

3.4.3.1.5 Probes shall be located such that any oil spill is minimizedduring probe change out.

3.4.3.1.6 Proximitors shall be installed in a junction box mounted on thepump baseplate.

3.4.3.1.7 1. Bently Nevada 3300 series vibration and position detectionequipment shall be provided.

2. System shall consist of probes, probe holders, proxmitors,monitors, power supply, probe cables, signal cables,conduit, and console housing.

3. Probes shall be identical to Bently Nevada model 21508 orPurchaser approved equal and shall maintain accuracy to atleast 350°F or pump discharge temperature, whichever ishigher, and not be affected by oil and/or water.

4. Probe holder and housing assembly shall be Bently NevadaModel 21000 or Purchaser approved equal.

3.4.3.2 REPLACE FIRST SENTENCE WITH

For special purpose pumps and pumps specified on data sheets,hydrodynamic thrust and radial bearings shall be fitted withbearing metal temperature detectors.

3.4.3.3 REPLACE WITH

For special purpose pumps or as specified on the data sheets,the following shall be provided:

1. Monitors with connecting cables to vibration, axialposition, accelerometer, and bearing temperaturedetectors. Detectors shall be provided, installed, andcalibrated in accordance with API Standards 670 and 678.

2. One dual voting thrust position monitor for each axialposition measurement and one dual plane monitor for eachradial bearing with alarm and shutdown circuits toindicate vibration from the x and y probes on the samebearing.

a. Outputs from both x and y probes on a single bearingor both axial probes shall exceed preset limit toinitiate a unit shutdown.

b. Each monitoring device shall have a first-out featureand relay to activate one common alarm and one commonshutdown on both the main and local control panels.

c. Each monitor shall have a shutdown bypass feature.

d. The monitors shall be installed in the main controlroom and shall meet the requirements of the areaclassification as shown on the data sheet.

e. Recommended alarm and shutdown settings shall beprovided.

f. System shall consist of monitors, power supply, signalcables, conduit, and console housing.

3. Vibration monitoring units capable of providing individualvibration output signals from each vibration transducers.

4. Monitors with separate adjustable time delays (0-30seconds) for alarm and shutdown modes.

5. Vibration detectors with integrally mounted monitors thathave an external time delay relay which bypasses theshutdown action when starting the machinery.

ADD

3.4.3.3.1 The pump train shall have Bently Nevada 3300 or Purchaserapproved equal accelerometer monitoring equipment.

1. The system shall consist of accelerometers, mountingblocks, protective covers, extension cables, interfacemodules, monitors, power supply, signal cables, conduit,and console racks.

2. Monitors shall be Bently Nevada dual acceleration monitormodel 3300/25 with dual meter face comply with API 678,paragraph 3.8.1, or Purchaser approved equal. Each monitorshall have capability to accept high and/or low passfiltering.

3.4.3.3.2 The pump train shall have bearing temperature monitoringequipment installed in the same control panel with the vibrationmonitors.

3.4.3.3.3 Recorder outputs of 4 to 20 milliamps shall be provided forinput into the process control computer for display in thecontrol room to the operators.

1. Data observed shall be peak to peak vibration in mils fordisplacement transducers 0 to peaks inches/sec forvelocity transducers, 0 to peak Gs for accelerationtransducers, mils displacement for axial position, anddegrees Fahrenheit for temperature monitoring.

2. A minimum of one OK, one alarm, and one shutdown relay permachine train shall be made available to the plantcomputer.

3.4.3.4 Horizontal pumps 800 hp and larger with hydrodynamic radialbearings shall have radial vibration probes in accordance withparagraph 3.4.3.1, subparagraphs 1. and 2.

3.4.3.5 Horizontal pumps with hydrodynamic thrust bearings shall havedetectors described in paragraph 3.4.3.1, subparagraphs 2. and3.

3.4.3.6 1. Horizontal pumps between 250 hp and 800 hp shall have oneaccelerometer.

2. Horizontal pumps shall have one detector per bearinghousing in direction of least stiffness.

accelerometer transducers as follows:

1. Each casing of the pump train shall have one accelerometeras follows:

a. Input and output bearing of each speed increasingreducer.

b. Input bearing of turbines and motors.

2. If practical, accelerometer shall be orientedhorizontally.

3. Mounting blocks shall be used for attaching theaccelerometers. These blocks shall be at least 3/4 inchthick of 316 stainless steel and have the followingfinish:

a. Mounting surface flatness 0.0008 inch TIR.

b. Mounting surface roughness 16 micro inch RMS.

c. Mounting hole perpendicularity ±5 minutes.4. The base of the housing shall be drilled to accommodate

the block and for mounting, as the housing cannot toucheither the block or the accelerometer.

3.4.3.8 For special purpose pumps or as specified on data sheets, thefollowing is required:

1. Each journal bearing shall have two dual junction embeddediron constantan ungrounded thermocouples in loaded area,installed in accordance with Drawing 11S-2682.

2. Thermocouples shall be recorded, trended, alarmed, andindicated in main control room on process computer.

3. Sensor lead connections shall not be made inside machine.

4. Thermocouple leads inside bearing housing shall:

a. Be adequately protected and secured to prevent damageduring normal operation.

b. Exit from bottom half of bearing housing through oiltight penetration fitting.

c. Terminate in thermocouple head mounted on outside ofbearing housing.

5. Thermocouple leads shall be plainly marked in thermocouplehead to indicate sensor location and service.

3.4.3.9 1. Four shoes of thrust bearing (two active and two oninactive side) shall have embedded iron constantanungrounded thermocouples, installed in accordance withDrawing 11S-2682.

2. Shoes shall be trended, recorded, alarmed, and indicatedon an analog chart recorder.

3. One thermocouple from loaded and unloaded side shall betrended, alarmed, and indicated on process computer.

4. Sensor lead connections shall not be made inside machine.

5. Thermocouple leads inside bearing housing shall:

a. Be adequately protected and secured to prevent damageduring normal operation.

3.5 Piping and Appurtenances

3.5.1 General

3.5.1.4 ADD

1. Barrier type seal systems shall have a forced circulationsystem.

2. Buffer liquid reservoir shall not be located more than 3feet laterally (horizontal axis) from seal gland.

3. Bottom of buffer liquid reservoir shall be a maximum of 1foot above pump shaft centerline.

4. Reservoir shall have a minimum capacity of 2 gallons.

3.5.1.5 ADD

The piping shall terminate with one flanged connection for eachrequired service at the edge of the skid or baseplate. Purchaserwill provide only off-skid piping.

SECTION 4 - INSPECTION, TESTING, AND PREPARATION FOR SHIPMENT

4.1 General

4.1.3 REPLACE WITH

Purchaser shall as a minimum be notified 5 working days beforewitnessed or observed tests.

1. Inspections and testing shall comply with Inspection andTesting Requirements Sheet (ITRS - P-2M13I) and thisspecification.

4.3.1 General

4.3.1.1 ADD

NPSH tests shall require written notification of successfulprevious test.

4.3.1.2 ADD

1. Test agendas shall be submitted for pumps rated over 500hp and multistage pumps.

2. Each agenda shall include a description of the test loop,setup, instrumentation, acceptance criteria, and specificstep by step test program.

4.3.1.5 Special purpose pumps shall be tested in accordance with thefollowing:

1. Witnessed thermal transient (rapid heat up and rapid cooldown) test at rated flow. Pump flow, suction pressure, anddischarge pressure shall be recorder. For duration oftest, vibration, pump suction temperature, thrust bearingtemperature, and pump casing temperatures shall becontinuously recorded.

2. Witnessed or observed 4 hour mechanical test a minimumcontinuous flow. Pump flow, pressures, power, speed,filtered and unfiltered vibration, lube oil temperatureand pressures, and bearing temperatures shall be recordedas a minimum at 15 minute intervals during first hour andat 30 minute intervals thereafter for duration of test.

3. Witnessed or observed start/stop integrity testsconsisting of a minimum of 15 starts and stops. Vibration,coastdown time horsepower, suction pressure, and dischargepressure shall be recorded. Successive starts and stopsshall demonstrate that metal transfer or dimensionalchanges occur at close running clearance in pump.

4. Witnessed or observed complete unit test consisting ofpump, gear (if any), driver, and auxiliaries. Gearvibration test shall not exceed 0.15 inches per second(ips) peak unfiltered or 0.10 ips filtered at any gearboxrotating speed.

4.3.2 Hydrostatic Test

4.3.2.1 REPLACE a. WITH

Pumps shall not be segmentally tested.

REPLACE c. WITH

Auxiliary equipment exposed to process fluids and mechanicalseal flushing liquid coolers shall be tested at least 1-1/2times maximum operating pressure (150 psig minimum).

4.3.3.1.5 ADD

Pumps specified for oil mist lubrication shall have dynamictests performed while using Supplier’s oil mist supply system.

4.3.3.2.1 ADD

1. Pump shall be run at least 2 hours after all bearingtemperatures have stabilized.

2. A complete set of mechanical data shall be recorded very15 minutes at every performance test point and high oiltemperature excursion.

3. Mechanical data shall include vibration measurementsspecified in paragraphs 2.8.3.7 and 2.8.3.8.

4.3.3.3.2 ADD

During running test, oil temperature shall be raised to high oiltemperature alarm setting on oil console.

4.3.3.3.3 ADD

Pump suction pressure during performance and mechanical runningtests shall not exceed rated suction pressure specified on datasheet.

4.3.3.4.1 ADD

1. Following performance tests, Purchaser shall have optionto open and check pumps for evidence of internal rubbingand sleeve bearing damage. For example, bearings or closeclearance parts shall not have measurable dimensionalchange or metal transfer.

2. After cause of any rubbing is corrected, pump shall be runagain and rechecked.

4. Rotors that require trimming of an impeller shall berebalanced in accordance with this specification.

5. Special purpose pump rotors not disassembled for trimmingshall be rebalanced using a minimum of three correctionplans.

6. For special purpose pumps, if any of the impellers aretrimmed, the pump shall be retested in accordance withthis specification.

4.3.3.4.4 During test, mechanical operation of equipment and testinstrumentation shall be satisfactory.

4.3.3.4.5 For special purpose pumps, in addition to test log of vibrationamplitudes, the following vibration test data shall be recordedat each shaft probe of equipment being tested:

1. While pump is operating at maximum continuous speed, attrip setting, and during hot oil excursion, a plot shallbe made of overall unfiltered vibration amplitude,compensated and uncompensated for runout versus time andfrequency.

2. An oscilloscope photo or graphical display of 2 cycles ofoverall unfiltered vibration signal at 500 rpm and maximumcontinuous speed (MCS). MCS trace shall overlaysynchronous (1/rev) component of same vibration signal.

3. Plots showing vibration amplitude of overall unfilteredvibration amplitude, compensated and uncompensated forrunout and synchronous (1/rev) vibration and phase angleversus speed of acceleration and deceleration shall bemade before and after mechanical/performance run.

4. At 10% speed increments from 0 rpm to trip speed, a“waterfall” or “cascade” plot of compensated anduncompensated for runout vibration amplitude versusfrequency. Vibration frequency sweep shall cover a rangefrom 0% to 600% of maximum continuous speed.

5. “Nyquist” or polar plots of vibration amplitude(compensated and uncompensated for runout) versus phaseangle from 0 rpm to trip speed. Plots of orbits filteredto running speed and unfiltered at maximum continuousspeed shall be provided.

6. Eccentricity polar plot showing shaft location in bearingclearance versus speed during runup and coast down. Plotshall indicate overall bearing clearance, vibration probe,and pressure dam or tilting pad locations and loadeffects.

7. Test shall verify that lateral and, if entire train istested, torsional critical speeds of equipment traincomply with paragraph 2.8.2. Main and spare (if specified)rotors shall be given an unbalanced response test inaccordance with procedures in API 617, paragraph 2.8.1.9.

8. Results of unbalance response tests shall be overplottedand compared against calculated curves using sameplacement of unbalance and weights and vibration probe

4.3.3.4.6 1. For special purpose pumps, running tests and mechanicalchecks shall be completed and subject to Purchaser approvalprior to removal from test stand.

2. For other pumps, running tests and mechanical checks shallbe completed and subject to Purchaser approval prior toshipment.

4.3.3.4.7 1. Hydraulic power recovery turbines, if performance (load)tested at less than rated speed, shall be mechanicallytested as a pump (no load) at rated speed for a minimum of2 hours.

2. Mechanical testing shall be at both low flow and ratedcapacity.

3. Flow, pressure, speed, filtered and unfiltered vibration,lube oil temperature and pressures, and bearingtemperatures shall be recorded at 15 minute intervals.

4.3.4 Optional Tests

4.3.4.2 Complete Unit Test

4.3.4.2.1 ADD

1. If gears are provided in pump drive train and are to betested with pumps, gear contact pattern shall be checkedafter completion of performance test.

2. Gear contact pattern shall be centralized on gear mesh.

3. Contact shall be uniform and not less than 80% of toothface width.

4. Gear mesh shall not have surface damage on any portion.

5. Accelerometer over all unfiltered levels shall not exceed4 g under any combination of load and speed.

4.3.4.4 Auxiliary Equipment Test

4.3.4.4.1 ADD

1. Gear shall be checked after completion of performancetest.

2. Gear contact pattern shall be centered in gear mesh.

3. Contact shall be uniform and not less than 80% of toothface width.

4.4 Preparation for Shipment

5.2 Between Bearings Pumps (Types BB1-BB5)

5.2.1 Pressure Casings

1. Selection of thrust bearing size shall includeconsideration of thrust loads from pump and thrustrequired to slip coupling.

2. Shaft coupling lockup shall be calculated based on 0.25friction factor between sliding surfaces of coupling atdesign horsepower, design speed, and coupling pitchradius.

6.2.1.6 Proposals for centrifugal pumps shall be arranged in thefollowing sequence:

1. Data sheet (P-2M13S1).

2. Pump performance curves.

3. Exceptions to specifications.

4. Scope of supply.

5. Price information.

a. Pump.

I.1 Lateral Analysis

I.1.4 Damped Unbalance Response Analysis

A plot of rotor mode shape for first and second critical speedstiffness. No shaft modes shall fall at bearings or vibrationprobe location.

h. A rotor response curve of vibration (mils-peak to peak oz-in. unbalance) versus speed form 0 rpm to 30% abovecalculated second critical speed. Response curve shall bescaled such that maximum vibration is at least 3 incheshigh on ordinate.

i. Calculated response of major and minor diameter of shaftorbit at bearings, mid span, and couplings from 0 rpm tomaximum continuous speed shall not be greater than 40% ofrotor’s running clearance. Rotor response at bearingsshall not be greater than 40% of steady fluid filmthickness. Bearing fluid film thickness versus speed shallbe shown on this curve. Amplification factor shall not begreater than 5.

j. Separation margin of encroachment from all lateral modes(including rigid and bending) shall be at least 20% overmaximum continuous speed for rigid rotor systems or 15%below any operating speed and 20% above maximum continuousspeed for flexible shaft rotor systems.

k. A plot of log decrement versus rotor speed andhydrodynamic loading shall be provided for each rotorresonant frequency for the allowable variation in bearingclearances. Effect of seals and bushings shall beindicated separately.

APPENDIX V - TRANSIENT TORSIONAL ANALYSIS

1. Two independent analyses shall be performed.

2. The analyses shall be performed by compressor manufacturer, as well asone other mutually agreeable supplier or consultant.

3. Compressor manufacturer and consultant shall provide strain gage data ona previous application to substantiate the analyses.

4. If discrepancies develop between the analyses, the analysis resulting inthe higher stresses shall be used to size the components.

5. All analyses shall be completed prior to released of components formanufacturing.

6. Couplings shall be sized in accordance with API 672. Couplings shall notbe Holset type.

7. The train shall be designed for an infinite number of starts assuming:

a. The fatigue strength in torsion of 1/4 the fatigue strength intension.

b. Shaft material damping is equivalent to 2.0% of critical damping.

c. 10 torque cycles per startup.

d. 100% starting voltage.

8. The analyses shall include the following:

a. A Campbell interference diagram of torsional natural frequencies andexciting frequencies of first and second harmonics of running speedand 2 times slip frequency.

b. Mode shape plots of the normalized torsional amplitude versus axiallength along the train for first and second natural frequency.

c. Speed (0% - 100%) versus time curves for 100%, 90%, 85%, and 80%voltage using the anticipated compressor loading during startup.

d. Curves of motor mean torque, motor pulsating torque, and compressorstartup torque versus speed (0% - 100%). The motor torque curveshould be at 100%, 90%, 85%, and 80% voltage.

e. Plots of torque versus time for each shaft as the train passesthrough the highest stressed resonance with 100%, 90%, 85%, and 80%starting voltage.

f. A tabulation mean and peak stresses for each shaft provided in e.These shall include the stresses in shaft ends, coupling spacers,disc packs, diaphragms, and coupling bolts.

g. Interference fit capability of each coupling/shaft end.

APPENDIX W - BLUEING PROCEDURE

1. The coupling bore shall be checked on a coordinate axis checking machine.The check is to confirm that:

a. The bore of the coupling is round and straight with the centerline ofthe coupling.

b. The sides of the taper are straight, i.e., the taper does not have abow or bulge in it.

2. The results of the coupling bore check shall be presented in tenths of amill, at two diameters 90 degrees apart.

3. Burrs, nicks, or raised edges at the ends of the taper or at the “O” ringgroove shall be dressed as necessary.

4. The serial number of the coupling shall be recorded.

5. Spare couplings shall be marked with a distinctive yellow band.

6. The shaft end/coupling fit shall be checked in the following manner. Thissame procedure can be used to check the fit between the shaft and a ringgage, the ring and plug gage, or the plug gage and the coupling:

a. The shaft end, plug gage, ring gage, and coupling bore shall bedegreased and cleaned with a solvent. All “O” rings have beenremoved.

b. A 0.0001 inch thick coat of evenly applied Dy-Kem soft blueing shallbe placed on the bore of the coupling or ring gage.

c. Coupling shall be fit to shaft end (tapped not rotated).

d. The coupling (straight off) shall be removed. The blueing transferfrom the bore to the shaft end shall be observed. If the blueing onthe shaft end is visible from approximately 5 feet, too heavy a coatof blueing was used.

e. The blueing can be permanently recorded by lifting it from the shaftend with strips of transparent tape. Strips of 1 inch widetransparent scotch tape shall be applied from the large diameter tothe small diameter of the taper. Gaps between the tapes shall not begreater than approximately 1/2 inch.

f. The tapes can be peeled from the shaft end and permanently stuck to awhite sheet of 8-1/2 inch x 11 inch writing paper. The lines on thepaper shall be visible through the blue tape. If the writing linesare not visible, the original coat of Dy-Kem soft blueing was tooheavy. A minimum of 90% contact is required.

7. Documentation required on this permanent record shall be the following:

a. Date.

b. Purchaser estimate number and project name.

c. The serial numbers of the mating components.

d. The names of the people performing the test.

e. Which end of the tapes were at the large diameter of the shaft.

f. The location of any “O” ring grooves or oil distribution grooves.8. Color copies of the 8-1/2 inch X 11 inch sheets shall be provided.
