By Dave ScottDon and Joan Daley do love to get away and they always seem to find the path less travelled and last fall was no different. The couple were in Southwest England attending their niece’s wedding. Of course they made sure to take the time to rent a car, hit the open road and see where their adventure would take them. One of the cool spots they checked out was the Eden Project, which according to the website (www.cornwall-online.co.uk) is a gateway into this fascinating interactive world of plants and people, a living theatre, exploring our global garden inheritance - revealing plants, as you’ve never seen them before. The Eden Project is a truly unique experience, in the heart of Cornwall’s Clay Mining country - a place to explore the amazing relationship that exists between the human population and the fascinating world of plants - and the extent that we depend on plants for our very existenceThe world’s largest geodesic domes at The Eden Project contain two distinct biospheres

for you to explore, the Humid Tropical Biome featuring a jungle environment and the Warm Temperate Biome, featuring plant species from

the Mediterranean, South Africa and California. Whilst outside there is a series of landscaped gardens where you can enjoy a diverse collection of plants from the Wild Cornwall section to the terraced tea slopes. Both Don and Joan found the Eden project unique, not just for the domes, but for the art work as well.Next up the couple headed off for a tour of St. Michael’s Island before heading out to Mouse Hole actually pronounced Mowzel, this beautiful quaint harbour town is just what Don and Joan needed and it was while heading back out onto the highway they passed a sign and in the corner of the sign was a small Canadian flag. The couple decided to back the car up and take a look… their interest peaked. The sign said Wolford Chapel, so our two adventurers decided to go take a look.Joan says they ended up driving down a one-lane road with grass growing out of the middle of it. They weren’t quite sure where it would all lead, but then they saw the Canadian flag flying

in front of this old stone church. That sense of pride came over them when you see our flag anywhere in the world. Rain was falling, it was a typical English day but that did not dampen the spirits of our two investigators. They pushed open the door to the small church… no one was around. They began to look around and at the front of the church they noticed fresh flowers. Someone had been here? Then they noticed a plaque and low and behold they had stumbled across the birth site and burial ground for one Lieutenant-General John Graves Simcoe and his family. Turns out that Don and Joan were at the church the Simcoe family had built and this was all their property. The two smiled at their discovery. So far from home… but feeling a sense of home within the walls of the church… visiting the site of Simcoe’s namesake. The couple spent some time at the site reading the plaques and taking some photos before driving off down the small one lane road with the Canadian flag in their rear view mirror, happy that they had seen the small sign that had lead them to a piece of Norfolk’s history!

By Dave ScottAttending something new can be unnerving and over-the-top rewarding. We all carry a speck of self-doubt or uncertainty in our minds… it happens that first day of school as a kid, we’re excited and scared; maybe that first date we feel nervous and happy; your wedding day is full of joy and appreciation. For twenty-four women, a few of these emotions were to be expected. Most of them did not know each other, but they all carried a common burden that had become a part of their lives and changed their outlooks forever.I watched this group of women enter the room, make small talk with one another, then sit quietly waiting for the session to begin.

You could see it in their eyes; that look of hope and apprehension. Small smiles crossed their faces. Some wore buffs on their heads, all focused on the speaker as they listened intently. They all knew that over the last six months to a year, everyone in the room had faced their own personal demons and had experienced the triumphs of their lives. There was a sense of a bond within the group that didn’t need to be discussed. Today they had gathered just outside of Simcoe for NEW DAY NEW ME, a free makeover session for cancer patients and survivors.I have done stories on this event in the past, and by far this one had the largest attendance yet. Volunteers from local businesses took time out of their day to come and provide the ladies with information, direction, and enhance their self-

confidence as their body images changed from their battles with cancer. With this being the biggest group yet, I found myself looking into the eyes of mothers, daughters, grandmothers… I saw strength and determination for the future. The fight is theirs… they are the survivors who will lead the way for others… their illness will NOT defeat their heart and soul nor will it take away their beauty on the inside or out.Thank you ladies for being leaders. You didn’t ask for it… but your strength will help others! This is usually the spot where we would thank the businesses involved, but knowing the group of women who organized this event… it isn’t about business… it is about love!

north shore runnersIt’s Who We Are

By Dave ScottThe sun was shining across the diamond at Memorial Park, as light wind drifted at the backs of the ball players. Some stood on the infield and others steadied themselves in the outfield as coach Jay MacDonald threw pitches to the batter at the plate. He was always reminding the thirteen and fourteen year old boys to be ready. He wasted no time, keeping them on their game, constantly reminding them of their responsibilities. It was easy to see that the kids understood their coach and worked hard to refine their skills. It was just after lunch, and as I stood near the left field line just beyond the dugout, I couldn’t help but feel the nostalgia of youth as I watched the players shagging flies in the outfield. The kick-up of dirt as the runner rounded the bases… it was easy just to relax and watch the practice… baseball kinda has that effect, it sucks you in and the next thing you know an hour has gone by and all you did was watch some kids play a little ball.Practice wrapped up and I headed over to chat with a few of the players. Jay introduced me to a few of the guys and told me that they were some of the leaders of the team. We began to talk and I noticed the rest of the players went to work cleaning up the diamond after practice, raking the mound and being proud of their ballpark. Not a word was said when the coach told them to get it done… no complaining, no ‘Why me?’... just focus. There was appreciation and pride in the game as well… I was impressed.

I had been informed that this minor bantam team was going to visit Cooperstown this summer… the Mecca of baseball, home to the Baseball Hall of Fame. It is the ultimate place for a ball player to visit. The boys told me that they would be playing nine games in Cooperstown against teams from all over the world… Japan and Saudi Arabia to name a couple. It will be a trip of a lifetime! These young men have been practicing indoors at Simcoe Composite School since early January and have been fundraising for the trip long before that. They have done a bottle drive, cleaned up properties for folks, and had draws to raise funds for the trip, all with 100% participation from the players. As an outsider looking in it was easy to see the strong team chemistry among the players. Most of them have played together for the past three to four years under Jay’s guidance. The flow of the group was evident on the field; they understood each other’s roles, their own strengths and weaknesses and were working together to become a better club… hey, exactly that a team should be.Sure these players are excited about Cooperstown, but they also have some unfinished business. They want to win the Ontario Baseball Association (OBA), which they lost last year in the finals to Barrie.I have no doubt they will achieve their goal… and as for Cooperstown… make us proud! This season will get rolling on May 8th at home against the London Badgers. If you would like to help the Giants with their fundraising please call (519) 428-2919.

I was looking at some old photographs the other day of me driving my Healey 3000 at the Silverstone Race Track, site of the Formula One race in England. That car was a lot of fun to drive, just like my favourite Volkswagen the CC 2.0L Turbo, with a manual transmission. In my mind I compared the experience of driving the big Healey and the Volkswagen CC.They are both great looking even though they are 47 years apart. But how can you compare a 1965 car with a 2013 car?In the Volkswagen CC the gearbox is silky smooth and it’s a 6 speed. The steering wheel is perfectly proportioned and is fully adjustable with radio, information centre and Bluetooth controls on it.Heating and air conditioning controls fall easily to hand and the seats are firm, supportive and have adjustable lumbar control. The sport suspension keeps the car glued to the road and when required the turbo charged engine can give you all the power required.Add to that a 600 watt 10 speaker sound system! Now in the Healey the gearbox was a bit of a brute. The steering wheel was the size of the London bus wheel, non adjustable and really needed to be muscled to steer the car.The back end could slide away if you did not pick a good line and have correct speed around the corner. There was no air conditioning but it did have a small heater. The radio was an option I did not have in my car.But one thing both cars do have is the ability to put a smile on your face while driving them.If you tried to purchase a 1965 Healey 3000 now it would probably cost you twice what a 2013 Volkswagen CC costs. If I had to pick which car I would want to own today it would want it definitely be the Volkswagen. Before any of you phone the 5 police officers who live in my area. I will drive it at the posted speed limits but I will find the most twisty roads I can to have fun in this great sports sedan. To me, this car sums up what I feel about Volkswagens,“It is the journey not the destination”

Three local organizations were the beneficiaries of a recent donation drive by Roulston’s Pharmacy locations in Simcoe, Port Dover, and Delhi. Customers who donated $1 were given a free draw ballot on one of three prizes, an Xbox 360 bundle, an iPod Touch, and an

Aeroplan card loaded with 20,000 Aeroplan Miles. All of the funds raised during the March campaign were shared equally between the three organizations, and each group received a cheque in the amount of $474.47, for a total of $1423.40.

To help celebrate volunteerism across Canada and recognize “Volunteer Week” (April 21 – 27, 2013), Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg wants everyone to understand how volunteers are vital to the existence of the crime fighting program. Very often when someone hears “Crime Stoppers” they automatically think that the program is a police initiative. This is a common misconception. In reality, Crime Stoppers is a nonprofit organization that is owned and governed by volunteers from the community. These volunteers make up a governing board of directors that is responsible for all decisions regarding tipster rewards, promotions, program operations and ALL fundraising to maintain the program. The volunteers who form the Crime Stoppers board of directors come from many different geographic locations and varied backgrounds, but they all have one goal in common - safer communities. They give freely of their time and are committed to stopping, solving and preventing crime in our neighbourhoods.

This dedication when combined with the outstanding efforts of the local media and police has led to outstanding success for the crime-fighting program. This year, Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk and Tillsonburg celebrates its 25th anniversary. Since inception in 1988, the crime fighting program has assisted the local police in the seizure of over $40.6 million worth of illegal narcotics, the recovery of more than $5.1 million worth of stolen property and the laying almost 5,400 charges.Crime Stoppers gives people an anonymous, confidential way to relay information to investigators without ever having to get involved as a witness. People can provide information by phone at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.helpsolvecrime.com and cash rewards up to $2,000 are offered for information that leads to an arrest or charge.

By MArG WErDEn nest building and watchingA few weeks ago, I wrote about Bird Studies Canada’s newest citizen scientist program, Project Nestwatch. (For more information, go to BSC’s website: http://www.birdscanada.org/ and click on “volunteer programs” and then “choose a program” and look for Project NestWatch.) Shortly after writing that column, I noticed debris piling up under our deck and on our patio outside our walk-out basement. As well, I noticed some piles of grass on the beam that supports the deck joists. There are perhaps a dozen openings between the joists that would be suitable for a nest and, after watching for a short while, I saw that the Robin that had had a nest there last year (or perhaps another Robin) had selected the site for this year’s nest. Unfortunately, the Robin was once again having some difficulty remembering which spot it was using for its nest and had

several (actually six at last count!) started. This happened last year as well and by the time the bird laid its eggs, it had only half completed three nests. The one she chose to use for her eggs was somewhat flimsy and I was surprised that it survived long enough to fledge the young birds. After watching these nest-building attempts for a couple of days, I decided to help the bird out. I gathered all the material she had brought to the beam and deposited in the various slots and piled them into the slot that seemed to have the biggest pile. Then I put chunks of wood in all the other slots. Now, I have to say that this confused her for a little while, but it wasn’t too long before she figured out which slot was the right one. Within 24 hours, she pretty well had her nest built. It was amazing how quickly it all came together once she was only working on one nest instead of six!A Robin’s nest is constructed by the female from the inside out. She first builds a somewhat unkempt foundation of grass and twigs and then tops this with a cup of mud lined with fine grass. Every time the Robin brought some nest-building material to the “building

site,” she would place it in the nest and then hop in and, tail up in the air and breast down, she would wiggle around a little to form a nice round cup. Once the grass cup was formed, she reinforced it with mud that was probably gathered from worm castings to make it heavier and sturdier. The nest was then lined with fine dry grass and is now about six inches across and about four inches high. Other materials that are often used by Robins to build their nests include paper, feathers, rootlets or moss.Typically, the nest site is chosen by the female and is usually on a horizontal branch hidden in or just below a layer of dense leaves. However, since so many convenient “human-made” structures are now available, they often use these. Robins have been known to nest in gutters, on outdoor light fixtures, in bird feeders, or just about anywhere that is flat and has some protection from the elements. In fact, they are happy to use purpose-made nesting platforms or shelves if someone is willing to make them. Plans are available on the internet. In the prairies, American Robins may build their nests on the ground or in thickets, while in Alaska they

sometimes nest on buildings or cliffs. Now, I’m waiting for the eggs to begin to appear. I laid a piece of plywood on the deck over the nest to keep it from getting too wet from the rain as the site isn’t exactly waterproof, but if I lift it up, I can see into the nest. My daughter tells me I have taken such an interest in this nest because I’m feeling some empty-nest syndrome after having one of my kids at home for the last few months. That’s not true!! I just want this Robin to have a successful clutch of chicks and I was feeling bad that she was making so much effort building so many nests and not getting anywhere. I hope she appreciates my assistance!

Hopefully, before too long, the robin that built a nest under our deck (left) will have a nest full of eggs as another robin did a few years ago (right) and will have a successfully fledged brood of young ones.
