WELCOME TO THE 42ND ANNUAL
NORFOLK HARBORFEST® 2018
THE HISTORY OF NORFOLK HARBORFEST®
It began 42 years ago when the Norwegian Tall Ship Christian Radich came to call on Norfolk, a waterfront community that had no city-owned property on which to dock a ship. The ship was docked three blocks from Town Point at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and 13,000 people crossed her gangway in just one and a half days. Over the next two years, City planners and leaders created berthing to accommodate more ships, and a waterfront public park was planned. Norfolk Harborfest® was born. Today, tall ships from all over the world frequently call on the City of Norfolk and nearly half a million visitors gather on the downtown waterfront each year for this annual celebration of our region’s rich nautical heritage. The traditions of the East Coast’s Premier Waterfront Festival are celebrated with nautical history, maritime events, visiting vessels, children’s activities, local, regional and national entertainment. Festivities stretch from the Waterside District to the Historic Freemason Harbor.

The spectacular Parade of Sail, under the direction of the Virginia Pilots Association, will enter the Downtown Norfolk Harbor on Friday, June 8 at 12pm. Following tradition, this impressive fleet will include tall ships, character vessels, sleek power cruisers, sailing craft, antique and classic wooden boats, military vessels, tugs and more! Thousands of onlookers stationed at vantage points along the Elizabeth River will be able to witness this expansive fleet as it dances down the river towards Town Point Park.
Coastal Riverine ForceForged from our rich coastal and riverine heritage, the Coastal Riverine Force regained prominence following the USS COLE and 9/11 attacks and is the only Navy Force that defends designated high value assets against a determined enemy. Catch demonstrations on the Elizabeth River on Friday, June 8 at 4pm.
Ultimate Build-a-Boat, Boat Building Contest and Race The very popular and zany Ultimate Build-a-Boat Challenge begins on Saturday, June 9, when teams construct boats from scratch in various engineering and decorative designs in the hope that their design will survive the test of Sunday’s Ultimate Build a Boat Race! Sunday, June 10 at 3:30pm, the competing teams place their boats, and boating skills to the test with an all-out race to the finish line! This nail- biting event is one not to be missed!
18th Annual Dawana Jennings Memorial Yacht Club Rendezvous Local boat clubs, yacht clubs, and marinas from around the Hampton Roads area come together for the 18th Annual Dawana Jennings Memorial Yacht Club Rendezvous in the Freemason Harbor. 34th Annual Chesapeake Bay Workboat Parade and RacesThe Chesapeake Bay workboat is a type of traditional fishing boat used in the Chesapeake Bay. Watermen use these boats year round for everything from crabbing and oystering to catching fish or eels. The Chesapeake Bay Workboat is the official Virginia State Boat. Because of the decline in the seafood industry, the Chesapeake Bay waters that once flourished with these beautiful handmade boats has become a scarce sight. The Chesapeake Bay Workboat Parade on Saturday, June 9 at approximately 2:30pm highlights the

Elizabeth River Tug MusterThe muscle men of the harbor bring their tugboats out for an all-out demonstration of power and agility in the popular Tug Muster Saturday, June 9 in the Elizabeth River. LANDSIDE ATTRACTIONSThe Colours Junkanoo Street Party 25 members of the world famous parade unit from Nassau, Bahamas will travel to Norfolk to perform “rushouts” throughout the weekend. Making music from goatskin drums, cowbells, whistles, horns and conch shells and wearing beautiful and vibrant handmade costumes – these are must-see performances!
Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating ContestThe Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest is a culmination of a qualifying circuit conducted throughout the United States. The 42nd Annual Norfolk Harborfest® Fireworks Display presented by WAVY TV 10
The Norfolk Harborfest Fireworks
Display, produced by Pryo Shows
of Tennessee, is one of the largest waterfront
pyrotechnics shows on the East Coast.
Be prepared for the unexpected as the
sky is filled with an explosive display of
light choreographed to a patriotic musical score
throughout the Waterfront in honor of the Naval
Station Norfolk Centennial celebration. The
Fireworks show is scheduled for Saturday night
at approximately 9:30pm and will be fired from
a floating platform on the Elizabeth River. The
2018 Harborfest Fireworks Show is dedicated in
honor of Spencer A. Coleman (1933- 2017), one
of the original founders of Norfolk Harborfest

fireworks fan than Spencer! We are truly grateful
for his vision, leadership and many years of
