England Coast Path
Natural England should, by the end of June, confirmed and published its
final report for the first section of the Coastal Path in Norfolk (Sea Palling to
Weybourne). Work is proceeding on the next section, Hopton on Sea to Sea
Palling. I am acting as the local contact in developing proposals to be put
by The Ramblers to Natural England, and for then responding to NE’s
initial plans. By the time this is published, I will have met (with Ian
Mitchell) with Natural England to discuss their and our initial thoughts,
and will be working on a draft of the report to be submitted on behalf of the
Ramblers. I will have walked along the whole section, but I do not have the
local knowledge held by members and others who live near or walk
regularly along that section of coast. I would welcome all suggestions
about where the coast path should run for the best enjoyment of
walkers. Please contact me via [email protected] or 01362
691455. Thank you.

Ramblers path survey
We now have over 1000 survey reports covering over a third of all the
parishes in the county. Key features are
only a little over half of the paths meet all the legal requirements and
are easy or even possible to use
one third are not signed and/or not waymarked, making it
impossible for people to know where rights of way actually are
at the time they were surveyed, over a third presented difficulties
because the path had not been re-established over ploughed land or
through crops
more than one third of the identified difficulties were not reported to
the county council, suggesting that its own statistics should be
increased by half as much again to give a fair picture of the state of
the county’s paths

Life on the Board
As many of you will know, this April I was elected as a member of the
Board of Trustees for Ramblers nationally. Therefore, I thought I’d give you
a mini report on my first few month’s experiences.
Apart from a brief meeting after the AGM, my first proper board meeting
was in May and took place in Cardiff. The other two new trustees and I
started off with a number of meetings with key Ramblers staff members,
and with the chairman of the board. It was at this point that I first started to
grasp the significant responsibility I had taken on.
Following this meeting all board members had a “Welsh Tea” and met with
representatives of partner organisations in Wales. The board meeting
proper was on the next day, during which I was allocated responsibilities
for IT and for membership numbers (the latter was a surprise!)
As well as this board meeting, I have had teleconferences with the Finance
& Operations and Mission subcommittees, and also one on young walkers
groups.

The following paragraph relates to all walks advertised in this guide:
All sporting and leisure activities have inherent hazards associated with them and
rambling is no exception. In spite of the safety of members always being the
paramount concern, accidents will occasionally occur. It is important, therefore,
that when entering into the activity, each member appreciates that they have a
responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity and take all
reasonable steps to eliminate or minimise the potential for an accident to arise.
