Summary

Noranda Exploration Co., Ltd. of Timmins, Ontario, performed an exploration campaign on their Joffre Property in February and March 1993. The claims group is located in the North-East corner of Joffre Township, located approximately 100 km South-East of Chapleau, along the Canadian Pacific Railroad. The 1993 program evaluated the following: line cutting; HLEM; and total field magnetics.

The ground geophysics aimed to detect the presence of conductive sulphides in a volcanic environment. The occurrence of soil geochem anomalies represents a good indicator for such sulphides.

The HLEM survey outlined a weak electromagnetic conductor coinciding with a magnetic axis. The magnetics confirmed the North-South strike of the geology. Additional geophysics, namely Induced polarisation, is recommended prior to any diamond drilling of those conductors.

Introduction

In February and March 1993, Noranda Exploration Co., Ltd. completed a exploration program on their Joffre property, North-East corner of Joffre Township, in Porcupine Mining Division.

A previous geological reconnaissance mapping campaign had confirmed the presence of favorable volcanic units for the occurrence of VMS type deposits ( Noranda Exploration, Summer 1992). Felsic and mafic metavolcanic bands are interbedded with sericite schist, biotite schist garnets, and minor pyrite.

The objective was to detect the presence of electromagnetic conductors along the favorable felsic-mafic contact. The magnetics was carried out in order to assist the geological mapping, and to also to detect magnetite and/or magnetic sulphides such as pyrolite.

Property

The property is located in the North-East comer of Joffre Township, at approximately 100 km South-East of Chapleau, Ontario. The claim block # 1190904 consists of 10 units of 16 hectares, for a total of 160 hectares. Claim posts are delineating the block with a post every 400 metres on the perimeter of the claim group. Witness posts were used where the presence of lakes and/or streams exclude the possibility of normal staking. The staking sketch is included on the next page.

Past Work

There is no past work recorded in the assessment file of the Mine Office. The only public information available are the regional aeromagnetic of the GSC, and the geological compilation map of the Ontario Geological Survey.

Access

The property can be reached by Highway 144 and than through a forest road heading in the west direction ( Bisco road ). The access is possible with normal pick-up truck to the South-East comer of the claim block.

Field work

The field work was performed by Rayan Exploration, from Timmins, Ontario, during Winter 1993, from February 20 to Mars 3, 1993. It consisted in 10.8 km of line cutting, 8.8 km of magnetics, and 8.8 km of HLEM. The presence of lakes and streams are reported on the grid lines. The CPR railroad and the access road are also outlined on the grid map.

HLEM survey and Instruments

The electromagnetic survey, namely HLEM, was carried out with an Apex Parametrics unit which consists of a receiver ( serial # 1040 ) and a transmitter, link together by a reference cable of 100 metres. The measurements represent the induced field in the subsurface, expressed in Wt of the primary field when the coil are maintained coplanar. Reading were taken every 25 metres systematically, on every line of the freshly cut grid.

During this survey, coils were both maintained horizontal, therefore they were not laying in the same plan where irregular topographic relief was present. It seems also that the nominal coils spacing of 100 metres was not constant throughout the survey. It generated "cable shortening" effects of fairly large amplitudes. For 1.0 metre of coils spacing variation (1.0 *X*) there is 3.0 Wi of difference in the reading of the in-phase component. The out-of-phase component is not affected by cable shortening and non-coplanarity of the coils.

Both effect are due to the relative position of both coils, and are purely geometric. Therefore, it reflects on each frequencies with the same amplitude in *fa of the reference field. Therefore, it is possible to discriminate between subsurface ( real ) conductors and geometrical conductors by comparing the response of the lowest frequency with the highest frequency (3555 Hz)

Magnetic survey and instrument

The magnetic survey was performed with a pair of magnetometers: a running unit; and a static unit, used as a base station. The latest was used in order to compensate for diurnal magnetic variations. Therefore, the final magnetic relief depends only on variations of the magnetic susceptibility in the subsurface.

The magnetometers are build by EDA Instruments, of Toronto. The running unit and the base station are both OMNI IV models. Readings were taken

systematically at 12.5 metres interval, at 2.0 metres above the ground level. The base station was monitoring the total magnetic field with a reading interval of 30 seconds.

Presentation of results

The results are presented on four maps included in this report. The scale is 1:2,500. Those maps are:

Magnetic results

The magnetics relief is fairly developed with amplitudes of 2000 nanotesla ( nt) above the background. Band of ultramafic intrusives and mafic metasediments are reported on the regional geological map of Noranda. The general strike is oriented in the North-South direction, similar to the inferred geology. All magnetic source dip steeply to the East (app. 750 ).

There is a perfect correlation between a magnetic axis and an HLEM conductor, on line 600N, SOON, and 1000N. The conductor will be described further. It is the strongest magnetic response observed on Joffre grid. The anomaly is likely caused by the presence of magnetite concentration, interbedded with minor conductive sulphides. Other mag highs are probably caused by mafic/ultramafic formations.

HLEM results

The HLEM survey allowed the detection of three bedrock conductors, all of poor conductivity. We also observe variations in the in-phase component that are likely caused by variation in the coils spacing as described above in the method description. Therefore, the interpretation of real conductors are based mainly on the out-of-phase response, which is independent of geometrical configuration of the coils.

Conductor A extends between lines 400N to 1400N. and stations 500E to 625E. There is a perfect coincidence with a mag high from lines SOON to 1000N. Because of the variations of the in-phase component, an exact evaluation of the conductivity-thickness product is not reliable. However, the out-of-phase

response suggests that we are dealing with a real bedrock conductor, despite the presence of a lake that extends with the same strike as the EM conductor.

Conductor B and C both extends in the western part of the grid, and correspond to the presence of a lake, such as for conductor A. In this case, however, there is no correlation with the magnetics. Therefore, the potential of those conductors for sulphides concentration is not as good as for the previous one. Any additional work on this anomaly would require more geological and/or geophysical support.

Conclusion

The actual geophysical campaign allowed the detection of weak HLEM conductors caused by the presence of minor sulphides in a volcanic environment. Since we are in presence of weak conductors, additional geophysical work would be recommended before any drilling of those conductors. An induced polarization survey would allow to test the real potential of those conductors.
