June Message from Board President Richard Stoll
Summer is almost here, so is the end of another Board year. Just finished a
General Meeting. This is the meeting to find out who is running for the Board and
Breeze editor. Surprisingly no one wants to get involved. The same people are
running, except Breeze editor. The people do not want to run because it is “too
much work”. If we all felt this way nothing would happen. I’m afraid that this park
will be like all the other parks. People will just live here, no activities, no dinners,
no breakfasts, no flea market, no Bingo, and no say in what is going on.
I have been on the Board for 5 years now and President for the last 3 years.
I’m not ready to give it up. I enjoy it so much. I enjoy seeing the happy residents
that get to enjoy the fruits of my labor. I know some of the other board members
feel the same way. If I am elected for another year, we will try to lighten the load
on board members.
Let me know if you want to discontinue the Breeze at the park. Someone
needs to step up. I will help with everything I can. Look at the Breeze in other
parks and all you see are advertisements. Nothing about what is happening in the
park.
Now for some good news. George Turk came for a visit in May. He said the
park has never looked as good. From what I have heard we are the most popular
park in Northern California. That has a lot to do with Miguel and his team. It also
has to do with the last several Boards.
Let us continue the trend. If you like what is happening, volunteer. We
don’t expect you to work at all events. The Board would like that also. If I’m re-
elected President, I will accept the challenge of changing this to accommodate the
Board and most of the residents. I’m going to challenge all the residents,
especially the new ones. Let’s get involved with the park. Start by asking your
neighbors to read the Breeze!
Have a great month and enjoy Hawaiian night!
MILLENNIUM MEMO “I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather, not screaming in terror like everyone else in the car.” What do you think is the most common complaint from residents at our Parks? Got any guesses? Dumpster abuse? Dog droppings? Parking? Children at the Pool? Feeding strays? All excellent choices, but the biggest complaint at The Tropics—narrowly edging out Dog Poop—is careless driving: speeding, running stop signs, that sort of thing. This is also Management’s biggest complaint about residents. Several residents asked me to address speeding again, specifically the question of… If Speeding Is Such a Problem, Why Isn’t Management Doing Anything? If the Union City PD can’t do much to stop speeding, running stop signs or reckless driving—and they can arrest, fine or impound cars—what can we do? We have a hard time keeping folks from parking illegally—and those cars aren’t moving! If you have any ideas that might limit reckless driving, send me a note. We’d love to be the first Community in California that stops speeding. Otherwise, unless you help us catch someone in the act, the only thing that might work is old-fashioned peer pressure. This discussion reminds me of my late father and how slowly he would drive—so slowly, in fact, that when we were on the freeway, even Amish people would honk. OK, you can go a bit faster than he did but please Drive Safely! Great Bond News! The City Council approved the refinancing, S & P gave the new bonds an “A” rating, we had a better-than-expected bond sale...and if all went according to plan, the new financing closed on May 8, a few days after I’m typing this. While this may not sound exciting, it’s great news for The Tropics. There will be a lot more money to spend on the Park, the Housing Assistance Fund will be fully self-sustaining…and next year’s Budget just got a lot easier to prepare! During the bond tours, I got many compliments as to how great your Park looks…and how much The Tropics has been upgraded since the last refinance in 2007. They even noticed the new $2,000 Stage Curtains. Thanks again to your amazing Maintenance Staff. A Mean Trick? One year I signed my Dad’s Father’s Day Card: “With love from your favorite son.” I figured it would be interesting to see which of us he thanked. Have your kids ever done that to you? Now have a Happy Father’s Day! George Turk
Manager’s Corner – June 2019 We have had cool windy days. but summer is just around the corner. Be sure to use lots of sun screen and drink water to keep hydrated when out in the sun. Walk earlier in the morning and wear light clothing in the evening while out for your walk as the sun can make it hard for drivers to see you and we want you to be safe. Reminders: Please park only in designated parking areas and not on landscaping and pavers. If you do not have an overnight parking permit do not park in visitor’s parking. No room in your driveway from 2 to 6am? You must park outside the park on Almaden. Drive the 15mph speed limit and STOP at stop signs. The life you save might be your own. Park Rules require pets be kept indoors and walked only with a leash. Do not leave food and water out for feral cats. This invites unwanted skunks and raccoons. We have had an occasion to call Animal Control to remove a sick raccoon from our Park. It is that time again -- Income Certification forms and Housing Assistance forms will be arriving soon and will also be available in the office for first-time applicants. Having completed my sixth year as manager, a big thank you to everyone for making my job still enjoyable. Thank you also to Kathy Vincent for sharing the burdens and the joys. We also have a great new maintenance team to help keep things moving smoothly in our Park. Enjoy your Summer. Nancy Payne Resident Manager
Editor’s note- I was just standing outside my home when I witnessed an accident: A car rapidly backed out of a driveway, on Palm near Maui. The driver didn’t bother to look where he was going. He struck an elderly gentleman, knocking him to the pavement. Is this how we want to live in our Park?

Friday JUNE 28, 2019 THE QUAKE
In 1904 an earthquake with a 5.4 magnitude on the Richter scale shook Oslo. Its epicenter was in
the Oslo Rift which runs directly through the Norwegian capital. There are recorded quakes from the
rift on a daily basis and geologists cannot be sure, but arguments indicate that we can expect major
future earthquakes in this area. When - nobody can say for certain - but we know that the density of
people and infrastructure in Oslo is significantly more vulnerable today than in 1904. What if a
massive earthquake is looming?Genre:
