Dear Friends,

We are right in the middle of our ImagineMore Capital Campaign. Th is campaign will raise the dollars to build a dedicated Children’s Ministry Building, develop our courtyard area to be more comfortable and compelling, and to create more parking. We believe these three projects will take our congregation to new levels of eff ectiveness.

I want to share with you a little more about the Imagine More Capital Campaign, especially as it relates to the future Children’s Ministry Building. In my last congregation in Encino, Calif., we had a parochial school. If I could go back and run that school today, I would add a piece to the academic curriculum. I would add training in what I like to call “Th e Language of the Heart.” By this, I mean that everyone needs to be trained in how to get along with others and with themselves. Th e scriptures address this constantly. For example in Matt. 18, Jesus gives instruction on how to handle confl ict. Over the years, I have watched many people struggle in dealing with confl ict with others. Th is inability aff ects their marriage, parenting, their job, and every relationship they have. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says “Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted.” I have watched people go through the death of a loved one and submerge their feelings; oft en this aff ects their relationships and even their health, not to mention that it is just a painful way to live. God’s word has a great deal to say about all of this. Th ere are many passages in scripture that can teach us how to deal with others and even ourselves. Wouldn’t it be nice to teach it to our children. In so doing they can enter adulthood emotionally healthy, and able to have lasting relationships with others. Th is is part of what Jesus meant by the “Abundant Life.”

A dedicated Children’s Ministry Building will mean we can expand our programming for children to accomplish training like this. We will be able to off er more programs for children, and not have to compete for space with adults in the late aft ernoon and evenings. It will mean we will have a space for children they can call their own, and will be designed in such a way that children will fi nd compelling.

Yours Because of Him,Pastor John Steward

Below are details of what we’re working with ‘NOW’, and ‘THEN’ how we hope to increase our ministry because of the ImagineMore projects:

I. New Children’s Ministry Building Goals A. Education – NOW utilizing shared space , THEN having classrooms dedicated to age levels provides a sense of ownership “my space” by the kids which creates stronger, longer lasting friendships/bonds B. Support – NOW existing classes don’t have space that encourages intimacy due to it being “adult space used by kids”, THEN classrooms will be the same from week to week providing the consistency that children need with midweek support groups and classes, C. Equip – NOW we can only do work on Wednesday nights and Sundays for specifi c times, THEN we will be able to work throughout the week to develop spiritual and emotional health for kids and families at MOO and in the community i. Classes on parenting, active listening, solving problems with peers, etc. D. Th is building will be a tool to reach kids and their families for Christ and communicate that they are valuedII. Redesigned Courtyard Space Goals A. Fellowship – NOW we have limited tables and shade to spend time and connect, THEN we will have ample seating, shade, plus safe, fl at areas for kids to run and play B. Outreach – NOW we have limited area to do outreach events that provide space for seating/ eating/fellowship, THEN we will have seating/shade/area for concerts and serving areas to provide meals during events more easilyIII. Increased Parking Goals A. Ease – NOW there is impacted parking between services, THEN we will provide extra spaces plus with the redesigned courtyard we will have people coming earlier and staying later to visit with one another

Please pray about what God will do through you to reach into the community and fulfi ll the mission at Moung of Olives “To Know Christ and Make HIM Known.”

Eric & Melissa Lo’s Cursillo Experience

In Eric’s Words: My wife and I have worshipped at Mount of Olives for some time now. Melissa has attended since childhood and was confirmed here, we were married in April 2003 in this church, and both of our sons have since been baptized here. Two years ago, we felt called to become more committed and make this our home church for our family.

Both Melissa and I were seeking ways to grow our relationship with the Lord, as well as within the congregation here at church. We joined a small group introducing us to some great people, andwonderful friendships have devel-oped as a result. We knew of Cursil-lo because Melissa’s parents attended

years ago, and after seeing another couple from our small group return from Cursillo with their renewed enthusiasm to serve the Lord, we decided we wanted to attend ourselves.

I thought after my return, I would have a feeling similar to what you would after watching a “feel good” movie or reading an inspirational book. Boy, was I wrong! I can say it was one of the most powerful and life changing weekends I have had to date. The weekend jump started a new relationship with the Lord, and inspired me to find more ways to serve him. I’m very thankful to have experienced Cursillo, and would strongly encourage all of you to attend.

In Melissa’s Words: Eric’s weekend was held before mine, and after his return, I knew something special happened to him. I have since witnessed so much growth and change within him. He has truly become the spiritual leader of our family. It’s difficult for me to properly describe my experience at Cursillo - words simply cannot do it justice. I experienced closeness to our God that I never before experienced. The love that poured

out from Him over the weekend is something that has changed my life. It gave me a tiny glimpse of what Heaven and our Eternal life will be like one day.

In addition to my renewed spirit and willingness to serve the Lord, I also received another gift from Cursillo. I feel a new sense of unity within our Church as many other members have also experienced Cursillo. Our once small circle has grown into a much larger community, all in the body of Christ.

After growing up in this church, I can honestly say I feel more connected now than I ever have. Through the amazing experience of Cursillo, to our newfound unity within our church, we are excited to see where God leads us to serve him. We would encourage anyone seeking a renewed Spirit and a closer relationship to God, to get some additional information on Cursillo.

Stephen Ministers: Th e Aft er People People oft en ask, “What exactly is a Stephen Minister?” One way to put it is that Stephen Ministers are the Aft er People. Stephen Ministers are there:

... aft er the phone call you hoped you’d never get. ... aft er the divorce papers are served and the bottom falls out of your life.

... aft er the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you. ... aft er the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.”

... aft er the nursing home director shakes your hand and says, “Welcome to your new home.” ... aft er the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away-and the house suddenly seems empty.

... aft er the gavel goes down, the handcuff s go on, and your loved one is led away. ... aft er the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you ever dreamed possible.

... aft er you fi nd a pink slip with your fi nal paycheck. ... aft er your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out.

Stephen Ministers are the “Aft er People.” Th ey are ready to come alongside you - or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives - and provide comfort and support for as long aft er as needed. www.stephenministries.org

If you or someone you know is facing a crisis - large or small- and could benefi t from the caring presence of a Stephen Minister, email [email protected] or

Exerpts from “Insiders and Outsiders,” by Michael W. Rinehart in THE LUTHERAN, Feb 2012

“Th e turnaround of mainline churches will happen when we in those churches care as much about those outside the church as we do those inside. To embrace relevance, we will have to let go of survival...My theory is that mainline churches have ceased to be relevant to the culture because insiders trump outsiders everytime...Insiders are inherently change-averse. People don’t like change, especially those who have status in the church...Management consultant Peter Drucker once said, “When the rate of change outside the organization exceeds the rate of change inside the organization, the organization is doomed.”...In times of change, experience can be a liability, especially if the experienced

make the fatal mistake of assuming that what garnered success in the past guarantees success in the future...Nothing great is accomplished without risk...So what will give us the courage to take those risks? Th is takes us back to the beginning. Churches won’t adapt to the new realities until they care as much about reaching those outside as appeasing those inside...So here’s the plan. New policy. Every decision made by staff , council and committees is made on behalf of those not yet here. Every sermon choice, every hymn or song choice, every building and grounds choice, every spending choice is made with outsiders in mind. When we become a church for the

world, the outsider, when the pain of staying the same (and dying of irrelevance) for those already here exceeds the pain of changing (and sacrifi cing old ways) for those not yet here, we will be the church for which God incarnate came to this earth and gave his life.”

Namibia Ministry UpdateWe are proud to be this year’s Namibia Mission Team 2012! We are an all female team of mothers, daughters and college students: Andrea and Kaylee Karsh, Kris and Eliana Yelli, Deidre and Delaney Lindahl, Allie Harrison (USC), Stacie Messner (UCI), and Christina Hart (Penn).

Th e purpose of the 2012 Mission Team is to address a major need of the children at the Ark in Keetmanshoop – to tutor the children in English and Math. Praises to the Lord, one of the college students on our team is an English major and another is a Math major and tutor! Research shows that even the slightest one-on-one tutoring helps most children improve a great deal. We are excited to be able to help these young students improve their test scores and study skills; we will be in Namibia just before their fi nal exams at the end of July. Our overarching goal in working with Christ’s Hope International is to help these young people become cycle-breakers, so that they will not fall back in to a world of poverty, alcoholism and AIDS. Our Namibia Ministry asks for your prayers that we may assist the teenagers at the Ark to become healthy and God-centered young adults.

Th ank you for all your support in our many fundraisers to send this team of 9 to Namibia for two weeks.

We ask for your continued support with our upcoming fundraisers:• Saturday, May 19: Recycling – please drop-off any old electronics at the ROCK parking lot• Sunday, June 10: Blood Drive and Car Wash – donate blood while we wash your car

Join us Th ursday, May 3 at 7pm in the ROCK – Jos and Sylvia Holtzhausen, International Directors and Dave Kase, US Dir. of Christ’s Hope Int. will lead worship during the Young Adult Bible Study and Worship night. Th ere will be opportunities for Q&A about CHI Namibia and we encourage all past and future missionaries and especially our sponsors of the children in Namibia to attend this inspirational event.

We are planning a 2013 Mission Team led by Andy and Cathie Shaff er. Join our meeting the fi rst Sunday every month at 11am in the church offi ce large conference.

Th ank you for your continued support!

WHAT GOOD IS FAITH IN JESUS, IF...? Correspondence from Th e Justice Conference 2012 in Portland, Oregonby Jeff erson Denim, Director of Music & Creative Arts

Th e righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern. - Proverbs 29:7

If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sis-ter in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God

be in that person? - 1 John 3:17

Ah, Oregon. Have you ever been? It’s really quite beautiful. OK, it does rain a bit...but look at all the green! Jeff Rogers and I made a road trip up to the Oregon Convention Center in Portland to attend Th e Justice Conference in February. I should pause here to give a bit of back-story.

Recently at Creative Team meetings I had been asking for prayer regarding something the Lord was putting on my heart. It seemed to me there was a bit of a disconnect in my life - I love Jesus, but was feeling like there was something miss-ing. What good is faith in Jesus if it didn’t cause me to really impact the world I live in for good? Th e reputation of Christians in this world isn’t always a great one, and many times we bring it on ourselves. But what if people looked at us and said, “Oh, I know those Christians! Th ey are constantly trying to make the world a better place!” or “Man, those Christians sure care about people!” I think many times I haven’t recognized just how practical the gospel of Jesus is. I’ll admit it - I’m guilty of making it more theoretical than practical. Th en I saw an announcement online about Th e Justice Conference. I also saw that some speakers I admired were a part of the conference (Francis Chan, author of Crazy Love; Shane Claiborne, author of Th e Irresistible Revolution & co-creator of thesimpleway.org, etc.) So off to Oregon we went.

And we certainly weren’t the only ones. Over 4,000 people gathered together to pray/think/dream of ways to put their

faith into action and give of themselves to change the world for the better in the name of Jesus. Th e speakers and break-out sessions dealt with important subjects including (but not limited to) human traffi cking (more people are enslaved today than in the entire history of U.S. slavery), the problem of “fatherlessness” and how it eff ects society, and how to partner with government agencies to help feed poor children in your local area when school is out for the summer.

“We don’t do justice work just because there is need in the world - we do it to have the most amazing, fulfi lling

relationship with God.” - Mike Hogan, International Justice Mission (IJM)

It turns out that the Bible actually speaks of “justice” (looking out for the poor, the orphan, the widow, the foreigner, those in prison, the “least of these”) hundreds of times. Google it...it’s mind-blowing. It’s safe to say that God considers this a priority in how we should live our lives.

I learned of a coalition of churches in the Portland area that have decided to come together to fi nd ways to express the love of Jesus to the city. For instance, they went to the City Council and asked, “What is the biggest need here and how can we address it?” Th ey have now created quite a reputation for being people who demonstrate the love of God in a very real way.

“Preach the gospel at all times, use words when necessary.” - Quote attributed to St. Francis of Assisi

Putting faith into action is certainly a part of our DNA at Mount of Olives. In March, a team of us went to help serve lunch at Southwest Community Center in Santa Ana. I celebrate our involvement there. I also celebrate our connections to South County Outreach, our Namibia ministry and Th e R.O.C.K.’s recent trip to Skidrow. What if we looked at Mount of Olives Church as a kind of train-ing and mobilization center, preparing families/individu-als/small groups to go out and help people in need in our communities? In the spirit of “ImagineMore,” imagine us being at the forefront of feeding hungry children, helping equip people who are homeless into a job and housing, or adopting a local underfunded school to off er tutoring, painting old classrooms, or whatever they needed.

For me personally, I feel like I’ve been skimming over all of these biblical references for years. Th ere they were, hidden in plain view, and I was never really “seeing” them. I think I can see them now.
