Student Eligibility

• Eligibility to participate on a CIAC school team is a privilege that students attain by meeting the eligibility requirements established by the CIAC as well as any additional requirements set by their schools.

• Athletes and parents are responsible for knowing and abiding by all CIAC Rules. To safeguard your eligibility refer any questions to your school’s athletic director or principal. Both your athletic director and principal have access to the CIAC staff for interpretations and rulings.

Student Eligibility• In order to represent your school, you

must be a bona fide student and meet all CIAC eligibility requirements, including the school’s academic requirements.

• Student-athletes at all levels of play, e.g. freshman, junior varsity and varsity, must conform to all CIAC eligibility rules.

Student Eligibility• Eligibility for fall sports is determined by the number of credits

received toward graduation at the close of the previous school year, not the fourth marking period grades. You must have received credit in at least four Carnegie units of work for which you did not previously receive credit to be eligible for fall sports participation. This may include credits earned during the summer. Thereafter, marking period grades, not semester grades, are used to determine eligibility. You must take and earn passing grades in at least four quarter Carnegie units and meet the academic requirements of your school to achieve eligibility. For additional information on academic eligibility, consult your athletic director, guidance counselor or school principal. Also, see Appendix B in the CIAC Handbook for additional information on eligibility.

Family ID• FamilyID is a secure registration platform that

provides you with an easy, user-friendly way to register for our programs, and helps us to be more administratively efficient and environmentally responsible. When you register through FamilyID, the system keeps track of your information in your FamilyID profile so you enter your information only once for multiple uses, multiple family members and multiple programs.

• All registration will be done online during the “open registration” period. Athletes will not be allowed to play or practice until all information has been completed in the registration process.

When is it best time to contact a coach? Make an appointment to speak to them. Most Coaches prepare their practice times to the minute. Please respect their time and privacy. Parents may schedule an appointment with the coach or contact the athletic office so we can arrange a meeting if necessary.

We recommend that all conversations regarding an athlete follow the communication pyramid.

Athletic Director will only get involved after the communication pyramid is followed

• Concussion Management• The CIAC Board of Control at their November 2013 meeting passed a new

rule that requires all member schools to educate all student-athletes and their parents on concussions beginning July 1, 2014. The mandatory topics that must be covered include the following:

• the recognition of signs and symptoms of concussion• the means of obtaining proper medical treatment for a person suspected

of sustaining a concussion• the nature and risks of a concussion, including the danger in continuing to

engage in athletic activity after sustaining a concussion• the proper procedures for allowing a student who has sustained a

concussion to return to athletic activity• current best practices in the prevention and treatment of concussion• Further, CIAC also requires that all student-athletes and their parents

must sign an informed consent form developed by the school that attests they are aware of the signs and symptoms of concussion and return-to-play requirements. This consent form will be completed through the Family ID registration process.
