Your national security history magazine without malice.
U nasionale veiligheidsgeskiedenistydskrifsonder kwaadwilligheid. Om die verlede te bewaar sonder om in die verlede te leef.
To preserve the past without living the past.

Wie is ons? / Who are we? We are an informal group of police and defence veterans who would like to foster an interest in South Africa’s police, defence and national security history from 1652 with cut-off-date 1994; when the new South Africa came into being. We only tell and explain what we did; for we were the “on the spot” eyewitnesses! In fact we are the ones you saw on TV and in the news reels of the time following orders from parlia-ment. However we have to debate the incidents because our memory is fallible as we grow older. In the terms of the day "we earned the T-shirt and right to tell our stories for you to enjoy with malice towards none." In the suburbs we see so many gardeners wearing those T-shirts! We all can learn from the past.
Administration We are mainly a “one-man-show”, so if we do not respond immediately to your email
– please send a reminder to [email protected] or phone Hennie Heymans at
012-329-4229. We are mainly “writers” and very bad “clerks” – history is such an all
absorbing subject; we have do much reading, research, scanning, liaison and other
tasks - so sometimes we tend to forget, however that’s one of the bonuses or plights
when we get old. We always have vacancies for volunteers, editorial contributors
and the like.

Voorblad Die SAP vier 75 jaar diens in die “ou” Transvaal.
Editorial Although history tends to repeat itself, there is always a lesson to learn from history!
We study history mainly to avoid mistakes made in the past. We also have to know
where we come from, so that we know where we are heading to. There is also a
lesson in history for the current administration and our children. As a former member
of the South African Police Force I was filled with nostalgia and a sense of pride
when I paged through this 27-year old edition compiled to celebrate 75 years of
sterling service to the public of South Africa in the Eastern Transvaal by the former
South African Police Force. We were one “big police family”.
During 1994, in the place of the South African Police Force, we have established the
‘new’ South African Police Service. For more or less than 80 years we had the “old”
police force made up of all sorts of people who qualified to gain entry into the ranks
of the police. To distinguish the “new” police service from the “old” force we are
referred to in some quarters as the “Apartheid Police” of South Africa. Page though
the memorial issue when the force celebrated 75 years service in the Eastern
Transvaal – today a ‘new’ province called Mpumalanga - and you will be amazed at
the various specialised police and detective services rendered then to the people of
South Africa. The borders of Eastern Transvaal and some names of towns have
been changed.
As a former policeman, not a politician: My colleagues and I have tried our utmost
best to make the police force a symbol of decency. A body of police is there in the
first place to serve and to protect. In serving the public it is never necessary to ask
payment for police services rendered - except under very special conditions. We did
not regard ourselves above the Law; we knew we were subject to the Law like any
other citizen. Although subject to the Law; we were also, over and above, subjected
to the Police Act, the Police Regulations, Police Standing Orders, Force Orders and
the newest High Court decisions. We had to write police examinations before we
could be promoted. Paging though this edition one finds that many advertisers were
satisfied clients of the police and their support made that commemorative edition
possible.
Lately I was fortunate to attend a few lectures on policing; one of them tackled the
area of specialization in the police. It has been proved the disbanding of specialised
units was a great disaster. Mr Jackie Selebi – second commissioner and not a
policeman - was the designer of this ill-fated and badly conceived plan. Since the
6
appointment of Mr Selebi the Police Service has been plagued by the appointment of
unsuitable commissioners; I must be fair: I think under the circumstances Mr Cele
did a good job! He gave direction to bewildered police who were merciless killed and
hunted by criminals. A sad feature indeed today is that many people are
unfortunately afraid of the police, while others are not even bothering to report crime.
Some of those that report crime do it only for insurance purposes. Without good
crime intelligence and honest statistics no police can combat the criminal onslaught.
A good police service needs good, dedicated professional men and women loyal to
the government of the day and the people of the country.
