HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE LPS NEWSLETTER ‘Non Sibi Sed Omnibus’ Friday 9th June, 2017 “I believe education in music, theatre, and the visual arts… is part of a well-rounded education and can provide so much joy, now and in the future.” - Rudy Giuliani - Mayor of New York City (1994 - 2001). I am writing this article fresh from my visit to our highly impressive Art Exhibition in the Hall. This is the first time we have held such an art show and every child is represented, some more than once, in a variety of techniques and genres. I hope you were able to get along to see all the wonderful items on display. Once again the talents of our students continue to amaze me and I think LPS is really lucky to have such dedicated teachers who encourage the talent of the children. The opportunity to buy the work and donate the proceeds to Benola, a cerebral palsy charity added a further charitable dimension to the event. Yesterday morning a group of 16 students from Years 5 & 7 and 7 staff visited the Premier Foundation Preparatory School in Makoko. They took some writing materials and old text books and interacted with the local children in some informal lessons. Next year the LPS community is aiming to provide some toilets for the school and create a water barrier to stop the ground floor flooding during the wet season. Tomorrow morning is the final of the Headmaster’s Cup at CIS in Lekki. The best of luck to our boys who we hope will return with the cup as champions. In a warm up match earlier this week two LPS teams drew their games with the French School. On Monday morning Key Stage 3 (Years 7 - 9) will be holding their musical assembly at 8am in the Hall. Everyone is invited to come along and enjoy. The end of the school year is coming upon us rapidly. Be aware that we have a full programme of events for the final week - Jungle Book, Prize Giving, Graduation, French Day, Inter-house Swimming Gala, End of Year Parties and much, much more so we look forward to seeing all the children at school. We have established a Community Notice Board in the Foyer where members of The LPS family can post events. Items can be handed to Kabir Fakus In the Admin Office. Don’t forget it is PTA Book Club on Thursday morning discussing ‘Born on a Tuesday’ by Elnathan John. “We think that exam results are very important but they don’t constitute a full rounded education.” - Barnaby Lenon - former headmaster of Harrow School, UK, now Chairman of the Independent Schools Council. From the PTA Book Club Book Review: The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives

‘’The Secret Life of Baba Segi's wives’’ is an eye-opening and extremely entertaining account of polygamy in a relatively modern day Yoruba household in Nigeria. The author introduces us to Baba Segi, a relatively successful, traditional, middle aged man who has four wives, Iya Segi, Iya Tope, Iya Femi and Bolanle.

The novel picks up at the point where Baba Segi is extremely concerned because his last wife Bolanle has been unable to get pregnant in the years they have been married, a problem that in his mind must be due to Bolanle as each of his other three wives have borne him no less than two children each. It becomes very apparent that Bolanle, due to her age and education is not a welcome addition to this household as the author takes her time to reveal. She takes us into the mind of each of the wives for us to understand their background, where they are coming from, the security they find in the polygamous set-up and the particular way in which Bolanle is such a threat to them.

As the book progresses, we find that as unattractive, annoying and arrogant as Baba Segi is, each wife for her own reasons and circumstances defines themselves from this polygamous set up and derives a strong sense of security from it.. even educated and intelligent Bolanle. It becomes apparent that the need to preserve the household and its workings are so strong that the wives (most especially Iya Segi and Iya Femi) will go to great lengths to make sure that nothing will stand in the way of their dominance of the home and all who live in it.

Baba Segi's wives have a most terrible secret, that is ultimately revealed at the end of the novel after the actions of the wives in an attempt to push Bolanle out have led to the most disastrous and tragic consequences. In the end, not even the truth in the light of the secret that is revealed, is strong enough to change the situation, and the novel ends as it begins with Baba Segi at the head of his household with his wives under his authority.

This book is beautifully written, managing to capture the culture and the reality of this polygamous household in a comprehensive manner. I would recommend everyone go out and get a copy of this book. It is a 'must-have' and a 'must-read' and in my opinion one of the strongest and well written books on the Nigerian literary scene of the last few years.
