Meals On Wheels West Board of Directors
Thank you Maura for your years of service!
Maura Winesburg, who served as Chair for two years recently resigned. Mrs. Winesburg dedicated more than 8 years of service on our Board of Directors. Her leadership is greatly appreciated by all. A. Carson Bond ,who was elected as our new Chair , is a volunteer who has been delivering meals for 13 years! She became a member of the Board of Directors in October, 2009. Due to Carson’s efforts MOWW launched Miss Lilly’s Pet Program in September 2012 teaming up with Bebe Flynn and her cookie company. Carson’s dedication to the clients and their pets personifies the goals of the agency to reduce both hunger and isolation.
New Board Members Join the Team
Jamie Lemon, Executive Assistant Manager of Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel hit the ground running by joining Team Meals and running the 2013 ASICS LA Marathon charity relay with his wife Heather. Mr. Lemon is serving as the co‐chair of the October fundraising event committee. The Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel is once again hosting the event. Melissa Sweeney of LotusLand Group has already applied her marketing expertise to jazzing up the Meals On Wheels West entry into the Santa Monica July 4th parade. Signs and banners were designed in keeping with the hero theme of the parade. For MOWW ‐ clients, donors and volunteers are all heroes! Rick Tell, of Rick Tell Consulting also brings his marketing expertise to the table. Rick is actively participating with both the Event Committee and the Marketing Committee. Best known as the “genius” behind the James Bond franchise, Mr. Tell’s creativity is already benefitting the agency. Angela Vassallo works at St. Johns Hospital as their Epidemiologist. Angela’s efforts on the Board will focus upon outreach to clients being discharged from local hospitals. Angela will assist MOWW to promote the role of the medical profession in making referrals and advancing the idea of food as medicine. Christine Cassiano is a member of the Santa Monica Rotary Club and Co‐Founder of ARC2 Communications, a healthcare communications agency focusing on women’s health issues. Her dedication to empowering clients in their pursuit of health and wellness will inspire her efforts on behalf of MOWW. Continued on Page 6

Girls Bake Treats for Clients At Ella Rose's 11th Birthday Party in July, she and her friends baked dozens of brownies and cookies. Rather than enjoying the treats themselves, they packaged them up with special notes of greeting and gave the treats to Meals On Wheels West to be distributed to the homebound neighbors! What a special birthday girl ‐ pictured front center. Ella is the daughter of Diane Rose, Canter at Beth Shir Shalom in Santa Monica.

We don’t stop laughing because we grow old…. we grow old because we stop laughing.
I asked the teller at the bank to check my balance, she
leaned over and gave me a push!
I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
I joined a health club last year, spent about $300. I haven’t
lost a pound. Apparently, you have to go there!
The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.
Laughter really is the BEST MEDICINE

Dear Friends,
The theme of the Santa Monica’s July 4th parade was “HEROES.” At Meals On Wheels West I am surrounded by heroes every day. Donors, volunteers and clients are my heroes. The contributions of funds, time, energy, compassion and caring move the wheels. Together as a team we reach out to the most vulnerable in the community and bring them food and friendship.
Thank you, my HEROES ,for providing the resources needed to respond to the daily need for nourishment. Unfortunately hunger doesn’t have a quick fix.
Thank you for donating your time and using your own car and gas! Thank you for buying a neighbor lunch! Thank you for trusting us to look out for your parents!
Warmly,
Highlights of 2012‐2013 Fiscal Year
The home delivery of food and friendship has gained a rainbow of colors, the fragrance of flowers, and a friendly bark.
Volunteers: A record breaking 447 volunteers delivered meals! Students, corporate employees, active seniors and lots of other neighbors have shared their time and their smile with homebound clients. Many of these volunteers help out on a weekly basis.
Pet Program: Since September 2012 Centinela Feed and Pet Supplies has been helping MOWW to provide food for 25 pets. Thanks to Banfield Charitable Trust the program is sustainable. More volunteers are needed to distribute pet food!
Fresh off the Vine: Produce is being recovered from both the Wednesday Santa Monica Farmers Markets and Sunday Palisades’ Market and distributed to clients all week long. Avocados, apricots, plums, oranges, berries, zucchini and peaches are just some of the fresh produce the farmers are donating each week!
Emergency preparedness: 3 day emergency food supplies have been distributed to all clients. Training for volunteers is ongoing. Everyone needs to be prepared themselves so they can then help others! Update your emergency kit!

Attention Clients!
Refer a friend to Meals on Wheels West and get a $20 credit towards your monthly invoice.* $20 * Referred client must be on our program for a minimum of two weeks in order to receive bonus.
Allie and Toby enjoy their weekly visits!
All volunteers from Meals On Wheels West deliver more than just a meal, they deliver the local newspaper, fresh produce from the Farmers’ Market and a caring smile along with the meals. Allie (pictured in pink) is a volunteer who goes well beyond the basics. Together with her delivery partner Toby, the ladies spend time with each neighbor often taking out their trash and even doing the dishes. The ladies enjoy sharing stories from their own lives and in return listening to fascinating stories of the lives of the homebound neighbors. “Enjoying the people you visit is a primary reason to volunteer” according to Toby. Ruby (pictured, not her real name) is one of the clients that Allie and Toby adore. A frail woman of 98 years, her charm and great personality shine through despite an aging exterior. Like most of the MOWW clients, Ruby is very happy to be living independently in her home. She
says she is never giving up and she is happy with her life. Ruby became a Meals On Wheels West client in July of 2011 and Allie has been visiting her every Monday since.
Our Board members who are not new deserve just as much attention!
Richard L. (Rick) Cupp, Jr. is the Vice Dean & John W. Wade Professor of Law at Pepperdine Law School. Rick delivered meals in Malibu for several years prior to joining the Board in 2009.
Len Lanzi is currently serving as the Treasurer and as Co‐Chair of the Event Committee. Len is in his fifth year as an active member of the BOD. Len is a Rotarian active on the international scene and Executive Director of LAVA.
Kathrine Russell has been on the Board since 2008 and presently serves as the Secretary of the Board. Kathrine is a financial advisor at Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC in Beverly Hills.
Melissa Dagodag is an attorney and her expertise has been an asset to the Board of Directors since 2007.
Rob Sherman is a marketing and branding professional who created MOWW’s beautiful logo and website. Rob has been sharing his expertise with MOWW for the last five years and serves as co‐chair of the Marketing committee.
Don Spector is an original Mad Man who can be counted on to participate in a parade or a marathon! His marketing savvy has been a great asset to MOWW since 2009.
Peter Taffae, President of E‐Perils Insurance, has been an active and dedicated member of the Board since 2004. He has contributed significantly to the Event Committee and Nominating committee process.
Tish Tisherman currently serves as Vice‐Chair. She plays an important role handling the hiring of new employees and recruitment of new board members by serving as Chair of the Board Development Committee. Tish became a board member in 2010.
Meals On Wheels West appreciates the time and energy that members of the Board devote to advancing the mission of the agency.
Gifts & Grants Although space doesn’t allow us to print all our donor’s names, we want you to know that every
contribution is greatly appreciated and goes directly to providing food and support to our neighbors. Acknowledgements are for gifts received January 1, 2013 ‐ June 30, 2013
