• Basal zone hyperplasia • Spongiosis • Elongated papillae (>75%) • Intraepithelial PNMs and/or eosinophils

Achalasia

• Unknown etiology • Defect in peristalsis and LES relaxation

• Similar physiology to Chagas’ disease • Distal esophageal narrowing • Risk factor for squamous cell CA
