Non-contact measurement Measurement, monitoring and detection
Level measurement
The Gamma radiation measurement system is used for the detection or non-contact continuous level measurement of liquids and bulk materials in reactors, vessels and bunkers. The chemical and physical properties of the product being measured do not affect the measurement.
Density measurement
Density or concentration measurement of alkalis, acids, saline and other solutions, starch, sugar, milk, etc. Monitoring of transformation processes such as polymerisation and crystallisation, measurement of the solid matter content in liquids, coal and mining preparations, and flue gas
desulphurisation installations.
Flow measurement
Precise mass flow measurement of solid matter on a variety of conveyor systems (belt, screw, bucket, etc.). The weighing system can also be used to determine the mass flow of “free fall” products in pipes or chutes.
Nuclear moisture measurement
Precise measurement of moisture in bulk solids: sand in the concrete industry, coke in the iron and steel industry.
Level, density and radiometric measuring system
Continuous level
and level alarm
Continuous level measurement and limit detection are performed by a non-contact device. The measuring elements can be installed externally enabling high-pressure reactors and corrosive products to be measured. Various installation configurations are possible for the level measurement. These are defined according to the type of vessel.
In the case of a rod source and point
scintillation detector, linearization of
the measuring signal is ensured by
distributing the source activity.
Alternatively, the measurement can
be performed with a rod detector,
plastic scintillator and point source.
Limit detection consists of a point
source and detector equipped with
one or more counters.
Continuous casting
The level of liquid steel in the casting
head influences the electromagnetic
field generated by the Eccast sensor.
This new generation of level
measurement for ingot moulds is not
affected by the level of powder in the
ingot mould and its highly precise
measurement is directly proportionate
to the level of steel.

Density measurement
Non-contact density measurement is adapted to all types of pipeline ranging from DN 25 to over 1000mm, and is also possible in vessels.
Colour, temperature, pressure or the chemical properties of the product being measured do not affect the measurement.
Installation is possible either externally on the existing pipeline or - especially on small diameter pipelines - by inserting a measuring device into the pipeline.
A measuring sensor with AM-241 sealed source is used for special applications.
The radiometric measuring method guarantees a high degree of operational safety and is maintenance-free even in extreme ambient conditions.
Source decay and variations in product temperature are taken into account to guarantee long-term precision.

Bulk flow measurement
Bulk flow measuring equipment for bulk products is easy to install on different types of existing conveyors using a measuring clamp. Non-contact measurement and operation
without moving parts eliminates wear and
tear. The assembly is very small and does
not require any upstream or straight
sections.
“Free fall” bulk flow measurement is also
possible. This is also an online, non-
contact measurement.
Nuclear moisture measurement
Continuous nuclear moisture
measurement is used to
determine the water content in
powders, pastes or bulk
aggregates. Several installation types are
possible: a bunker probe can be
installed inside the vessel or
bunker, or a surface probe can
be installed externally.
The moisture value is determined by the hydrogen content in a large volume of product. Measurement is not affected by variations in pH or in concentration of electrolytic components in the product.

Concentration, brix and µ-wave moisture meter
Micro-Polar Fluid
The Micro-Polar Fluid device is designed for online measurement of the concentration of a wide variety of products flowing through a stainless steel unit installed inside the pipe.
The device measures the entire product passing through the main duct or bypass. Direct measurements obtained by microwave technology are representative values for monitoring the quality and optimisation of the process.
Micro-Polar Brix
Supersaturation of massecuite is one of the important parameters which must be monitored during sugar production. Measurement of the dry substance content is absolutely essential to optimise, regulate and
improve sugar quality.
With years of experience in developing concentration measuring technology for the sugar production process, BERTHOLD TECHNOLOGIES is familiar with the demands for instruments required by customers in this industry.
We offer specially designed microwave sensors for taking measurements in pipelines, containers, crystallizers and any other components of the sugar production process.
6
Micro-Polar Moist
The Micro-Polar Moist measuring system is designed for online measurement of moisture in a wide variety of bulk products transported on belt conveyors.
The non-contact measuring device is particularly advantageous in this area.
Measuring on conveyor belts
The antenna pair and optional radiometric weight
measuring device are mounted on a joint frame. Radiation from the two measuring paths passes
vertically through the product.
Radiation by oblique transmission can be more advantageous in certain rare cases.
Evaluation electronics are installed in close proximity to the antennae. The circular HF cable is used as a reference for the measuring signal.
Measuring in chutes
Measuring the moisture of bulk products in a chute is particularly advantageous, as the fixed
geometry of the product to be measured
improves measuring precision.
Therefore, in many cases when measuring moisture in a chute, it is possible to dispense
with radiometric weight compensation.
Synthetic or ceramic chutes are available depending on requirements.
This system is suitable for measuring all types of bulk product with a maximum product
temperature of 500°C.
A round, stainless steel chute is available for special applications.
This flow cell has a PTFE lining with a nominal
diameter of 150mm.

Infrared and radio-frequency moisture
MCT-Series
The molecular bonds O-H, C-H and N-H are characterised by binding energy. They absorb infrared radiation according to several wavelengths specific to binding energy. The MCT measuring sensor generates these wavelengths which are absorbed in proportion to the quantity of constituent measured. The Infrared sensor uses a light source filtered by a rotating wheel containing up to 6 infrared filters. Wave trains generated in this way are reflected by the product’s surface and directed towards the sensor (via an optical system) by a temperature-controlled detector.
The latest generation of MCT 360 Near Infrared analysers brings laboratory precision to online operating conditions. Simultaneous follow-up of product composition can be directly accessed from the stand-alone MCT 360 sensor.
The main constituents measured are: sont : O-H
C-H
N-H

Radio-Frequency moisture measurement Online, mobile or on a lab table
Water has an extremely high dielectric coefficient which is usually 20 times greater than that of measured solid matter.
The emission of a radio frequency field is used to measure the
product/water dielectric component. This dielectric component varies
with the concentration of water in the product.
By simple calibration, the RFM 1000 series sensors can
determine the moisture rate in the measured products.
- Plaster board, Particle board, Plywood, OSB panels, Piling, Calibrated wood, etc.
- Whole grain cereals, Animal food, Whole coffee, etc.
- Cardboard, Corrugated cardboard, Pasted paper, etc.
High-Frequency moisture measurement
The sensor uses very low energy electromagnetic radiation absorption technology to measure moisture in cereal grains or other granulated products.
This system is mounted on a basic welding boss, measuring capacity or conveyor screw.
The sensor is easy to calibrate and offers an alternative to other devices, depending on process restrictions.

Solid and powder product flow
Flow monitors
Dynaguard GM01 indicates the presence of powder with a relay output for monitoring filter malfunctions.
Dynaguard K & V01 monitors the flow of bulk products according to an electrostatic measuring principle. The technology operates according to the physical phenomenon of electrical charges generated on solid particles by friction and breaking in the flow of bulk products in pipelines ranging from DN 10 to 300mm.
GM K
Dynaguard P01 monitors the flow of bulk and free fall products according to the microwave Doppler effect principle.

DYNAchute weighing
The DYNAchute weighing device is used for the highly precise measurement of free fall bulk products.
The weight of the bulk product is continuously measured on a section of the chute using a tried and trusted weighing technique, and the speed at which this weight slides down the chute is simultaneously determined by non-contact measurement. Mass flow is then calculated using these two absolute quantities, i.e. without calibration.
These 2 separate measurements have the considerable advantage of eliminating any negative influences caused either by variations in the product’s properties or by variations in flow.
Flow measurement according
to the µ-wave principle
This device has been designed to measure the flow of pneumatically-conveyed or free fall products with a particle size ranging from 1mm to 20mm. The device tolerates moisture variations of up to 12%.

Distance, speed and thickness
Distance measurement
The LDM 41/42 A is a laser distance measurement sensor used to measure distances from 0.1m to over 100m with pinpoint accuracy.
A given target can be clearly identified using a red laser beam.
The LDM 41/42 A is operated according to the reflection, morphology and quality of the measured target.
Speed measurement
The VLM device has been designed to measure the speed and length of a wide variety of products. It performs non-contact measurement and operates according to the physical principle of spatial filtering with a CCD sensor.
Surface structures of the matter which can be optically resolved are applied to the CCD sensor which deduces a frequency from the movement, based on which it calculates the speed.
Thickness measurement for the wood and particle board industry
Optimisation of particle board production involves mastering panel thickness,
weight and homogeneity parameters.
We offer various online monitoring systems for these parameters.

Radioactivity detection
Radioactivity monitoring and detection system
When a vehicle travels at a given speed between two terminals, GammaScan scans the emitted Gamma radiation for the presence of radioactive matter.
GammaScan is a versatile, stand-alone device which no longer requires a computer. As it is easy to use and quickly processes data, it reduces restrictions relating to vehicle load monitoring.
It detects the presence of radioactive matter in vehicles carrying scrap iron or waste.
The sensor frame is made up of two highly sensitive
scintillation detectors positioned just in front of the
weighbridge, and an evaluation unit for monitoring. An audible/light alarm installed in the LB 112 is
activated if the threshold set during commissioning is
exceeded, and the measured values are directly
displayed.
Analysers
Ash content analyser Non-contact measurement of the ash content in coal transported on a
conveyor belt is an essential factor for controlling material costs in thermal
power plants. Continuous moisture measurement can complement the analyser’s measurement to determine the NCV of coal.
Metal industry pickling bath analyser The pickling bath analyser is an online measurement device which continuously
determines the acid and iron content of strippers used in the steel industry to
remove deposits formed during hot rolling. Monitoring the correct composition of acid
is a decisive factor in producing a good quality surface with minimum use of acid.

Prevention of fires and explosions
System advantages Firefly preventive protection systems indicate the presence of
incandescent particles, sparks or flames and eliminate them
with extinguishing agents or neutralising gases before they
can reach hazardous areas.
Fire detection...
An effective prevention system must be capable of detecting "black particles", i.e. particles with a
temperature of approx. 250°C. Take for example the temperature of a match which has just gone out, i.e. approx. 500°C!
The detector measures the infrared energy emitted by incandescent particles and is equipped with
a multi-area system with provides it with an extremely high level of safety.
...and extinguishing
Different processes and their specific fire-related hazards require different water-based extinguishing
methods.
For powder products on pneumatic conveyors or free fall products, high-pressure injection of large water droplets in the form of powerful tapered water jets is the best solution for penetrating the material flow.
A mist of very fine water droplets is the most effective method for extinguishing flames in an open area or in the open air.
