Mission Statement Exemplars

Buffalo State’s Mission

Buffalo State is a diverse and inclusive college committed to the intellectual, personal, and professional growth of its students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Our mission is to empower students to succeed and to inspire a lifelong passion for learning. Buffalo

State is dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, service, scholarship, creative activity, and cultural enrichment.

Sample subordinate unit missions that align with the college mission by incorporation of common vocabulary:

EOP Mission The Educational Opportunity Program is committed to the intellectual, personal, and professional growth of its students. University Police Department Mission The University Police Department protects and serves Buffalo State by providing professional law enforcement services and actively promoting community involvement through progressive community policing strategies, problem solving, and a dedication to excellence education. Career Development Center The Career Development Center is dedicated to helping students fulfill the lifelong pursuit of purpose by providing services, access to information, resources, and experiences that address professional growth.

What is your Unit’s Mission Statement?

SMART Support Outcomes (Goals)

Developed from the unit mission, each non-academic unit should have a set of either Support Outcomes or Student Learning Outcomes, or a mixture of

both. Units will generally have between two and ten support outcomes. Support Outcomes should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable,

Relevant, Time-bound). Support outcomes may be similar to existing unit goals, objectives, actions items, or KPI’s, but for the purpose of our

institutional effectiveness and assessment initiatives, we have adopted the campus-wide term Support Outcome, based on national best practices. When

possible, support outcomes should align and have common vocabulary with the recently adopted Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs), Buffalo State’s

Strategic Plan and any other subordinate strategic plans in your area. Support outcomes should remain relatively consistent over time, and should only

change in focus if the unit’s mission is altered, which is unusual.

SMART Structure of a Support Outcome

Specific (Include an action verb that describes the behaviors, learning, or results expected from the service, program, or initiative, see page 7)

Define the goal as much as possible with clear language

Who is involved, What do I want to accomplish, Where will it be done?

Measurable (See page 8 for examples of typical non-academic measures)

Can you track the progress and measure the outcome?

How much, how many, how will I know when my goal is accomplished?

Attainable/Achievable

Is the goal reasonable enough to be accomplished? How so?

Make sure the goal is not out of reach or below standard performance.

Relevant

Is the goal worthwhile and will it meet your needs?

Is each goal consistent with the other goals you have established and fits with your immediate and long term plans?

Timely

Your objective should include a time limit. Ex. I will complete this step by month/day/year.

SMART Support Outcome Examples

Academic Affairs: By May 15, 2018, XX% of the undeclared undergraduate students who are on academic probation at Buffalo State will have a signed academic recovery plan on file. Student Affairs: The Office of Residence Life will increase the percentage of students who are satisfied with their student residence life staff by at least Y% over the previous academic year as measured by the skyfactor student survey administered in May 2018. Finance & Management: Events on campus sponsored by unaffiliated groups yielded $X,000 gross income in FY 2017 and will increase to $Y,000 gross income in FY 2018 as measured using generally accepted accounting principles by July 1, 2018. RITE: By May 2019, Buffalo State will increase the number of active Blackboard faculty users utilizing the gradebook function from #X faculty to #Y faculty, as assessed by Z report generated on May 1, 2019 and evaluated in a year-over-year comparison with Z report generated on May 1, 2017.
