• Human development till date has always been enthroned upon the exclusivity of purpose and in the course the other related ecological aspects has always been down played upon.

• The devastating result we are facing when nature is trying to balance the imbalances we created.

• Use of chemicals is one major aspect which created a huge imbalance in the ecology to the extent that the existing species are mutating to a highly resistant and dangerous form posing serious threat to man kind.

Introduction

Alexander the great conquered the world but died of a mosquito Bite !

• On these line of thinking four ex-army officers with a scientific research oriented approach ventured into vector borne disease control and environmental sanitation control solution in 2006.

• ISHA LIFE NOMOS was started with this endeavor to find :

• Eco-Friendly• Non-Toxic• Non-Polluting• Natural Vector Control Solution

Nature carries within her self all the solution of any problem

• Malaria kills over 1.2 million people annually • Dengue fever together with hemorrhagic fever is worlds fastest growing vector born

disease.• Nearly half of the worlds population is infected with at least one type of vector born

pathogen (CIESIN,2007; WHO,2004a)• Over the past 30yrs – following decades during which many mosquito born human

illness were controlled in many areas through the use of habitat modification and pesticides ,Malaria and Dengue fever have re-emerged in Asia and Africa and emerged in Europe (Gubler,1998,2007;Roos,2007;Yergolkar et al. ,2006) .

• According to national drug policy on malaria (2010) P.falciparum which causes 50% of the total malaria cases is resistant to chloroquine which is the main drug for first line treatment.

• In second line treatment artemisinine based mono-therapy has been put off and combined therapy (ACT) has been made compulsory

According to WHO and NVBDCP

ISSUES

• If we look at the history of vector control in India : The preDDT era included use of larvivorous fish oils and paris green in breeding sites.

• In 1944 DDT was introduced and tried in Assam Burma front in allied army camps of second world war with excellent results.

• Henceforth in 1953 National Malaria Control Programe(NMCP) was launched and riding on the success of it National Malaria Eradication Programe(NMEP) was launched in 1958.

• A set back to this program with resurgence of malaria happened in 1966 as An.culicifacies became resistant to DDT and HCH.

• Malathion and organophosphate insecticide was introduced in 1969 in Gujarat and Maharashtra and with in four years the species became resistant.

• In 1980 synthetic PYRETHROIDS, Deltamethrin was introduced and in the last decade of 20 th century , Cyfluthrin and Lambda Cyhalothrin were introduced.

• Presently, insecticides belonging to different groups viz. ,organochlorine , organophosphate and synthetic pyrethyroid are used for public health sprays.

• You will be amazed to find An.culicifacies has developed resistance to all group of insecticides used so far in public health program.

Resistance

Associated hazards of human concern

Despite the fact that governments across the world spend millions of dollars on vector control the reality is that the problem is still not under control. Disease, morbidity and mortality rate continue to rise. Below poverty line people suffer the most due to non-affordability of personal repellents

Escalation in costs of development of new insecticide molecules

Pesticide residues

A major issue faced by the world is the resistance developed by these vectors to insecticides. Continuous and prolonged use of chemicals make the new generations immune to the insecticide resulting in higher concentrations being used which further damages the environment besides being harmful and toxic to humans.

• A survey carried out by the National Institute of Malaria Research, New Delhi, covering both users and medical practitioners in urban and rural areas in nine states of India found out:

• Mosquito repellents widely used in the country are harmful to health and suggests their use be avoided or discouraged

• 11.8 % of the users of Synthetic Pyrethroids across all age groups and both sexes, "complained of a variety of acute toxicity effects either soon after or within a few hours of use of repellents of those using DEET-based cream”

• 11.4 % reported skin reaction and itching.

• “Although symptoms disappear shortly after withdrawal, those who do not suffer acute toxicity and continue to use these repellents for extended periods may suffer neurotoxic and immunotoxic hazards”

Vector Control Market Failures

The arsenal of safe and cost effective public health insecticide is being depleted by restrictions for various reasons eg insecticide resistance, unacceptable side effects and non recognition.

Resistance Issue

Lack of suitable insecticides for Vector control in the Industry project portfolio.

No contact action to mosquitoes within the new class of insecticides, (Fiproles, CNIs, etc.)Fast KD, low tox, low rate, good residuality target profile needed.

Depletion of the Vector Control Arsenal (adulticide)

No new public health insecticides have been developed for mainstream vector control in last four decades.

The small market for public health pesticides, contraction of agro chemical industry and loss of commercial public health expertise have contributed to commercial disengagement. As a result there is a paucity of insecticide choices for public health use.Cost/Time to Develop a New Insecticide in Vector control

Insects use receptors to identify food sources, mates and to be generally aware of the environment; insects typically have approximately 65 different olfactory receptors

Five key receptor genes were isolated from American cockroach, fruit fly and mosquito

Olfactory receptor genes (chemoreceptor genes) that are odor sensingNovel biogenic amine receptor genes that are neurotransmitters

The genes were incorporated into model cells that mimic receptors in insects

A screening process was developed using calcium ion and cAMP assays to quantitatively determine effectiveness of insecticides on model cells

The Technology

Completely Nontoxic !

Why Nomos ?

Page 14: Nomos

• Receptors detect specific molecules that stimulate the insect to action (food, mating, etc) These volatile molecules bind temporarily to the receptor

• Natural plant essential oils contain molecules that may have a similar structure but bind permanently to the receptor

– Cause the insect to be repelled (or at higher concentrations killed)

• Technology utilizes cloned insect chemo-receptor

– Chosen receptors not found in mammals, focused toxicity on insects

Completely Nontoxic !
