COMMODORE
David K. Winkler
VICE COMMODORE
Martin W. O’Brien
REAR COMMODORE
Thomas H. Schlichting
SECRETARY
Charles Whittaker
TREASURER
Ernest E. Hardy, Jr.
Commodore Winkler called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM
Wednesday November 20th.
Secretary Whittaker read the Call of the Meeting, changing the
order of topics and adding a secretary's report.
Nominating Committee
In accordance with Article VII Section 2, The Election of a Five
Member Nominating Committee 5 members were elected from 9
nominees: Frank Buckley, Larry Floyd, Mike Gahan, Jeff
Meskell, and Alice Rielly. Having received the most votes, Lar-
ry Floyd became the chairman of the nominating committee.
Honorary Members
Commodore Winkler read the by law pursuant to Honorary
Members. Past Commodore Paul Clauss spoke on behalf of the
two nominees for honorary membership. Ralph R. Bagley and
William Crotty were elected Honorary Members by the re-
quired 4/5th vote.
Marina Expansion and Dredging Report
Dave Aloise and Bob Baum reviewed what has taken place on
Marine Expansion and Dredging during the past two years with
respect to engineering, testing and permitting. These ventures
have not been able to go forward in the permitting process be-
cause they have been on hold pending the outcome of an appeal.
The appeal process is now over. It is expected that the final set of
permitting and abutter agreement will be completed and submit-
ted in early 2014. Follow that bids will be sought. Both gentle-
man made it clear that dredging is the priority issue. The entire
area that encompasses the existing and potential marina area is
to be dredged. Because dredging can only occur on the winter
months, the earliest the project could go forward would be the
winter of 2014-2015. This will allow funds for the project to
continue to accumulate for the expensive project. Marina Ex-
pansion costs will cause no financial burden to CPYC as the
additional slips will be totally self funded. Once permitting for
thee two projects is complete, there is a window of 5 years for
completion.
Treasurers Report
Treasurer Hardy thanked Don Kearney for his assistance dur-
ing the transition. Thus far it has not been necessary to tap other
accounts to cover operating expenses which is an improvement.
All bills are paid and accounts are current.
Thanks to Tom Landers, now head bartender, the liquor inven-
tory has been markedly reduced. Food is not doing as well and is
being addressed. Activity and revenue are key to the club fi-
nances as the Pilot House income and dues are the main source
of the operating revenue.
Secretaries report
Secretary Whittaker reported that our regular member count is
down 13 from the same time last year, reflecting a decrease in
membership and revenue. Senior membership has increased by
5. The rate of new applications has held steady, the same as last
year.
Social Membership Bylaw proposal
Commodore Winkler, representing the BOD proposed the addi-
tion of a new class of membership, Social Membership, SOC.
He stated the reasons as being to increase overall membership in
the club, improve profitability of the Pilot House restaurant
through increased food and beverage sales, increase participa-
tion in other non boating activities, and enhance sociability at
the club.
Attending members were encouraged to review the FAQ sheets
that were sent out by email and available at the meeting which
addressed most potential questions.
After review of the proposal and discussion, the membership
voted to amend Article III Section 2 Classes of Membership to
define Social Membership by adding part E, and to amend the
concomitant articles and sections needed with inclusion of the
new Social Member class.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 PM.

The Lipton Cup Awarded to Sean McGinn
The Lipton Magoon Cup is awarded to an individual who has made an outstanding contri-
bution to further the reputation of CPYC as an entity in the sailing world. Originally do-
nated to the Town of Winthrop in 1930 for its 300 year celebration of its founding by Sir
Thomas Lipton, it was later won by CPYC skipper John Magoon. In 1971 he donated the
cup to CPYC.
This years recipient, Sean McGinn, joins an outstanding group of past winners with his
accomplishment of his 2013 Mini Transpac victory racing from San Diego to Hawaii,
singlehanded.
Below left Commodore Winkler presents Sean with the cup and a keeper. Sean’s entire
family attended the award ceremony. Congratulations Sean!

Many thanks to the crew that put Breakfast with Santa on and kept
this long standing CPYC tradition alive; the Girard Family, Janine
Stanton, Pete Towner, the Schlichting Family, Santa and his help-
ers, Dave O’Brien III, the elves, Frosty and Rudolph, and the set
up and clean up helpers. Though the weather forced the breakfast to
be moved, it still was a tremendous success.

Adult Sailing Wrap Up Party
Adult Sailing graciously shared their wrap
up and thank you party entertainment with
the CPYC membership. Members and
adult sailors enjoyed the smooth sounds of
the Ariel Strasser Trio in the Pilot House
on November 23rd. Thank you to the Ar-
anov’s for arranging this well attended
evening.
CPYC’s favorite pilgrims Alice Reilly,
above, and Ellen Reilly, behind the cam-
era, brighten Thanksgiving morning at
CPYC.
The Turkey Shoot Returns
A small but enthusiastic group bowled the
reactivated Turkey Shoot. Using a format
of three balls for the 1st string, 2 balls for
the second string, and a single ball in the
last string, veteran bowler Joanne O’Bri-
en won the event followed by Theresa
Herbert, Marilyn Rapchuck and Joe
Ciampa. All the bowlers were winners as
everyone got a turkey. Theresa plans to
continue and expand this event next year.
▲Doc Ciampa, Holly and Antea Schlichting
take their turns.
▼ Antea shows off her turkey.
Youth Sailing News
In November the Youth
Sailing BOD and parents
arrived at the club with
rakes, saws, clippers,
ropes and tarps in hand
to clear out the space for
the club 420’s, N10’s
and Lasers to be stored
for the winter season.
The space was cleared
of debris and weeds.
Since the racks that are
being built for the boats
were not ready yet, they
built temporary racks to
get the boats off the
ground. Now stacked and
well covered the boats are
protected and ready for
winter.
Stephan Greppi and his wife travelled this Novem-
ber to Sri Lanka. This picture was taken at an ele-
phants orphanage near Yala National Park in Sri
Lanka. Stephan also got a chance to sail in
the Indian Ocean. Surprisingly, sailing is
not very common, although the southern
coast of Sri Lanka and the Indian ocean are
fantastic places to go sailing.

The CPYC Burgee Has Been On A Travel Spree!
Cruising the Danube in December and visiting
Hungary, Austria and Germany, with shore
time in Budapest, Vienna, Melk, Passau, Re-
gensburg and Nuremberg were four couples:
Betsy & Mike Gahan, Karen & Larry
Baker (Larry is Betsy's brother), Kay & John
McGinn, and Denise & John Economides. In
the Army in Germany in the mid 1950's,
McGinn helped repair all of the bombed out
bridges along the Danube. He was a 17 year
old kid at the time.

ing Magyars.

◄ Michael Fischer & son
Michael, Jr. Michael
sailed a Star at CPYC a
few years ago. Now a suc-
cessful doctor in Vienna,
he took the group on a
city tour. They had dinner
at a great little restaurant that only the locals know
about and drinks at local hangout, the East Coast Bar.
Regensburg-Bratwurst Served Here. This little sausage
restaurant has been in operation since1320. Needless
to say, it doesn't conform to modern fire codes.►

dock. The Nuremburg- German National
Museum chronicles the rise and fall of the
Nazis in graphic detail. The 3 Amigos display the burgee in
Mike's suite aboard the Viking Aegir.
The Burgee Continues to travel ..
The Fairbrother’s toured ancient lands aboard the M/V Harmony G from Rhodes,
Greece, cruising the eastern Aegean
Sea landing in Turkey in the general area of
Izmir before going on to Istanbul.
◄The town of Lindos and its acropolis. This
town is half way down the east side of Rhodes.
There are three hundred steps to the top of
the acropolis. Half way up as you walk through
the gate of Knight of St. John fortifications is a
ship carved in the stone. The same stone is
thought to have been used for the original Nike.
Over the red part of the burgee, in the break of
the hill is a bay, almost a pool, named St Paul's
Bay. St. Paul put in here during a storm on the way to
Ephesaus. ( Very hard to get a picture of people and
the bay together because of the height.)
► The library at Ephesaus. This was the third largest
library in the ancient world. Dean is standing over the
tunnel that led from the library to what
was first thought to be a two story resi-
dence but turned out to be a brothel.
This gives new meaning to "going to
library."
◄ Presenting the CPYC burgee to
Captain Paramonas Starvopoulous on the bridge of the M/V Harmony G. (Dean
later gathered the burgee was given the place of honor, on your starboard hand as
you exist the bridge.)

Regatta Committee
Updates
The Regatta Committee is pleased and to
announce that CPYC will be hosting the
US Snipe Women’s National Champion-
ships Friday August 8 for a clinic and
racing Saturday and Sunday Aug 9 and
10. We will be looking for housing for
some of the women who will be racing.
Some of the top women sailors are ex-
pected to attend this event.
There are two US Sailing educational
events in the area for the first half of
2014. On January 25th Eastern Yacht
Club is hosting a certified club judges
program. The is a new certification pro-
gram which is intended to improve hear-
ings and judging at the club level. The
second area program will be a one day
club race officer certification seminar at
the Boston Yacht Club on April 12th.
Space is limited for both program. For
further information, prerequisite, course
materials, or to sign up, go to
www.ussailing.org .
Thus far this season there have been nine
scheduled days of racing of which four
have been lost; one blown out, two no
wind, and one icing with wind. The
standings are quite jumbled up for the
Fall series. On the days that they have
been able to race there have been be-
tween 8 and sixteen Laser and Interclubs
on the water.

Ladies Bowing Roll Off
Ladies bowling Roll Off was Wednesday
Dec 4th. Team Monday started strong in the
first string to take a lead over Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Thursday respectively. In
the second string Wednesday bowled very
well to take over the lead by 24 pins over
Monday, followed by Tuesday and Wednes-
day. Three teams were only 3 pins ahead in
the third string with Wednesday finishing on
top. Believed to have never happened be-
fore, Monday and Tuesday tied for second
place, by 23 pins, with Thursday 4th.
Team Wednesday was beset by illness and
injury to their regular bowlers Galina An-
derson and Kathy Trainor. Alternates Jane
Carideo, Nancy McHugh, Mary House-
man (pictured below) and Ellen Reilly
(missing to go to work) did a great job.

print and e-copy, and e-copy on Barnes and
Noble. Finding Home has been receiving
good reviews thus far.
Shannon is a busy working mother of two

Calling by Robert Galbraith (pseudonym

Quality of Life Survey
Town Manager James McKenna re-
quested that the following article regard-
ing a community health assessment sur-
vey be placed in the Windjammer.
The town of Winthrop and Mass General
are working together to conduct a com-
munity health assessment. The goal of
the health assessment is to encourage the
community in creating a comprehensive
picture of Winthrop's overall health and
a plan to improve it. Over the next 3
months data will be collected from those
who either live or work in Winthrop
through surveys and meetings. In the
spring, this data will be reviewed at a
community forum where residents will
have a chance to help prioritize issues
and develop a plan to address then. Fi-
nal report detailing this plan will be
shared with the community in Sept.
2014.
He survey takes about 10 minutes, and
the answers you provide are anonymous.
This means that identifiers are not linked
to your answers in any way.
To complete the survey, go to
www.town.,winthrop.ma.us and click
on the red “Quality of Life” Survey. OR,
pick up a hardcopy of the survey at the
Health Dept. in Town Hall, the Winthrop
Public Library, or the DeLeo Senior cen-
ter.
