[ cover Image Inspiration ]Our cover and featured fashion shoot “Voyages Extraordinaire” was inspired by Jules Verne, the 19th century, French author best known for his novels Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, A Journey to the Center of the Earth, and lastly, Around the World in Eighty Days. His novels were rich with extravagant voyages and adventures set in the romantic Victorian Era. This was the era of the newly invented steam engine and through-railways and steamships, which opened up the opportunity for leisure travel and adventure for the first time. What could be a better metaphor for wedding planning than an extraordinary voyage? Isn’t that what you, the bride, is embarking upon? I would like to share with all of you that my

mother, Josephine Mary Marks, passed away on September 6. Before you offer any condolence, I must tell you that my mother was happily married to my father for

53 years. She was 16 years old when they married and their love for each other never waivered. They raised my two brothers and I on a truck driver’s salary and the love that they shared in our home was readily apparent to all of us.

We may not have had the newest sneakers or jeans but we knew we were loved. I believe that my love for weddings and all things beautiful was passed on to me from my mother and father. Although she always supported my endeavors, she was extremely proud of my acquisition of this magazine. She constantly showed it to everyone she could and would proudly say, “This is my son’s magazine.” She was absolutely giddy when my children appeared in the last issue. She was then able to say, “Look, these are my grandsons.” Marriage is a very special thing. It requires patience and compromise. It involves giving and occasionally admitting one’s own faults. But, it yields tremendous rewards if it is

nurtured properly. Peace, love, companionship, and a sense of purpose await those committed to this magical institution. I urge all of you soon to be married couples to persevere through the tough times. Love unconditionally. Be kind and generous to your spouse, especially when they may not always deserve it. I saw these traits firsthand and they leave long lasting effects that span generations.

This issue is our best one yet. I have the best magazine staff around. Everyone works tirelessly without complaint. I am blessed to have each and every one of them. I wish that I could say more about this issue but space doesn’t permit. I also feel like it sort of speaks for itself. I am very proud of this issue as we continue to grow. [ featured couple ]Kristen Thornton and Kevin DaigrepontKevin Daigrepont is the head chef and manager

at the Presidential Palace Reception Hall in Kenner. Kevin’s family owns the reception hall. Kristen Thornton also works there as a server, while at the same time attending college. The couple were co-workers for 7 months before they began dating on New Years 2009. At the stroke of midnight, they shared their first kiss and a wonderful courtship began.

“We love to just talk, communicate and continue to learn each other,” Kevin says. They also enjoy spending quality time together at the movies or at nice dinners. In keeping with Kevin’s profession, the couple shares a major passion for gourmet food. They also spend a lot of time with their dog, Sasha, and enjoy bringing her to the lakefront and to different parks around town. They dated from 1-1-09 to 8-14-10, when Kevin popped the question.

While relaxing by the pool one night, when Kristen least expected it, Kevin proposed on one knee in the pool with only his head and the ring sticking out of the water! Kristen accepted Kevin’s proposal and a wedding was on the horizon. Although the wedding planning has been crazy, the couple insists that it will all be completely worth it. After all, they are both in the business and know what to expect. Kristen says, “I think both of us would agree that the honeymoon has been the most important and fun part of our planning process! We can’t wait to relax on the beach in Cabo!” Kristen and Kevin’s ceremony will take place at the St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. They decided that since they are both Catholic, it would be the most memorable and amazing place for their ceremony to be held. The reception is of course going to take place at the Presidential Palace. Where else? They intend on enjoying an amazing night of food, fun, family, and friends.


Kristen and Kevin chose John Michael Photography to photograph their wedding. John’s Tuxedos will provide the tuxedos for Kevin and his groomsmen. A Regal Limousine will provide transportation for the couple and their respective families.

Q: I am planning a wedding and I want to invite all of my friends and family. I cannot seem to fit everyone in my headcount. I really don’t want to cut anyone from the list but need to, what should I do? – Tara Matherne, Metairie, La.

WISE BRIDE: It is understandable that you want to invite everyone to your wedding. This is an age-old problem. Traditionally, family comes first. But if your friends are more involved in your life, invite your friends. Think of it this way: Make the goal to surround yourself with people that are truly happy for the two of you. That will help you make the decision of whom to cut. Happy planning!

Q: I am Methodist but my fiancé is Catholic. I always dreamed of walking down the aisle of the church that I grew up in. My fiancé says nothing would make his mother happier than seeing him get married in the Catholic Church. I have no clue what to do because we do not see eye to eye on this. – Morgan Eppling, New Orleans, La.

WISE BRIDE: There needs to be compromise (every great relationship includes it). Communicate with your fiancé; make sure that whatever decision is subsequently agreed upon is done together. Perhaps appeasing his mother in some other way can end the stalemate. I would generally side with the bride’s wishes over those of the groom’s mother. It is your day, fulfill your dreams.

Q: I'm worried about wedding guests distracting from the ceremony by arriving late. What can I do to prevent this? – Lily Garcia, River Ridge, La.

WISE BRIDE: Don’t be overly concerned about starting punctually. A few minutes of anticipation has never hurt anyone. If guests are clearly still filtering in, give them a minute to find their seats. Communicate your worries to your ushers in advance. It is their duty to help your guests settle in. When the situation is calm, begin the ceremony. After all, you only get to do it once.

Q: My mother-in-law is too involved with my plans. I would like her input on some things but she is taking over my wedding. What’s the best way to go about toning her down? – Tamicka Rogers, New Orleans, La.

WISE BRIDE: The best way to go about the situation is to only invite your mother-in-law to appointments that you would like her to attend. Call her in advance to set up these appointments. When it comes to personal moments like dress shopping, simply go without her. Make sure to call her and tell her how it went. Simply letting her know how the appointment went may be all that she needs to still feel included. Communication is key.

Our cover model Heather Nicole Pardew or “Heady” is set to marry Ryan “Owl” Dwyer on 11-11-11.

Ryan is a set decorator in the New Orleans film industry and Heather is a painter and model. She is currently under contract with Metro Models & Talent of New Orleans. Aside from being a strikingly beautiful couple, they are two of the nicest, kind-hearted, generous people that one could ever hope to meet. They are a very colorful and artistic couple that will unquestionably enrich the lives of anyone who has the pleasure of meeting them. We caught up with Heady recently and would like to share our conversation regarding their upcoming nuptials.

NWG: HOW DID YOU MEET? HEATHER: I was in graduate school and filling in for someone at a little restaurant off the Carrolton streetcar line. This unbelievably jovial force came barreling in the shop wearing the biggest smile and hair in New Orleans. I said my usual, “Would you like naan with that?” He looked at me and said “Naan thank you, naan for me today!” And that was it! If I can appreciate anything - it’s a good pun. Owl proceeded to come in for lunch the next three days in a row. On the third day I told him, “You know, I won’t be here tomorrow...(long pause)...so you should probably go ahead and ask me out today.” We went out the next night. We celebrate our anniversary each year by eating lunch there.

NWG: DESCRIBE YOUR FIRST DATE.HEATHER: The first time we went out it was just for drinks. I met him at his house and we ended up barhopping on Frenchman Street. We watched some great live music and came back to his porch the rest of the night. We sat, talked, and we danced to Sam Cooke and Carla Bruni playing on my iPhone. It was annoyingly magical.

NWG: HOW WAS THE COURTSHIP?HEATHER: A few days after our first date, I asked Owl if he could appreciate a good party and he said that yes, he was up for anything. My parents were throwing a huge engagement party for a family friend that coincided with my mother’s birthday. It was in my hometown of Jonesboro, Arkansas, which is a 6.5-hour drive from New Orleans. We decided to surprise my mother for her birthday and drive in that day. Owl wore a bright red velvet smoking jacket and stole the show. A week after that, Owl asked me to move in with him and I told him he was crazy. Then, about 8 months later - I moved in. I knew when I started gardening that I had absolutely no intention of ever leaving this home - whether at this address or another.

NWG: HOW DID HE PROPOSE? HEATHER: We were all at the family restaurant, Charlie’s Steak House, during Mardi Gras. Nearly my whole family was in town and it was late. Owl got up to “help” serve the spumoni. My engagement ring was lodged in the pistachio flavor as he asked me if he could be my husband. I said very nonchalantly “That’s cool.” My sisters were freaking out crying and I was as cool and collected as a cucumber. I was just happy. It was like all my anxieties and worries melted away in that moment and I was as calm as I ever have been in my life. It was a beautiful night.

NWG: HOW HAS THE WEDDING PLANNING PROCESS GONE SO FAR? HEATHER: Honestly, I’ve been pretty calm throughout the whole process... and Owl - he’s always calm (one of the many reasons I love him). I feel that no matter what, at the end of the day...as long as Owl and I both show up that’s all that really matters. Anyone else that contributes to the celebration of us “showing up” is icing on the cake. NWG: WHERE WILL YOUR CEREMONY BE HELD?HEATHER: The ceremony will be held at Christ Church Cathedral on St. Charles. The space is beautiful indeed but the church itself has served us in a much greater way over the last few months. We are so incredibly grateful for our luck that it only seems appropriate to acknowledge it in some consistent way.

NWG: ANY ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES? HEATHER: Think of yourselves as a team. Really.

As fate would have it, Corey Buck had recently rescued two troubled kittens from

a pond at the exact same time that Jill Fayard was interested in buying a kitten. Using the kitty bait, Corey casually asked Jill on a date. Jill says, “Between the kittens and his beautiful smile, how could I say no?!”

After a wonderful courtship, Corey proposed to Jill on December 31, 2010 at 11:30 p.m. in a cabin in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Finding that Corey was on the porch, Jill walked outside to check on him. Corey got down on one knee and asked Jill to marry him. Corey had prepared an eloquent speech but when the time came, he went with his heart. Although the exact words were lost in the excitement of the moment, Jill recalls Corey saying, “I do not want to start another year without you as my fiancé!”

Jill and Corey were married on May 7, 2011 at St. Joseph Church with a reception that followed. The colors of their wedding were navy blue and silver/gray with a rainbow of spring-colored flowers decorating the venues.

Jill chose the third wedding dress that she tried on and completely changed the top of the dress from a halter to a sweetheart neckline.

Pearl’s Place provided the bridesmaids’ dresses. Jill says, “The prices were reasonable and I was happy with how Pearl’s Place contacted each bridesmaid directly. This helped immensely.” In keeping with the Buck family tradition, Jill’s mother-in-law made her a beautiful cathedral-length veil.

John’s Tuxedos provided tuxedos for Corey and his groomsmen. Corey adds, “John’s Tuxedo’s had a good selection of tuxedos and they deliv-ered all of the tuxedos perfectly and on time.”

Your Day Productions was chosen to video the wedding and did a wonder ful job of inconspicuously capturing all the special moments.

Jill and Corey choreographed their first dance and it was a huge hit! They began their dance to the song, “Time of Your Life” from the movie Dirty Dancing. About 90 seconds into the song, they switched songs to “Time of Your Life” by the Black Eyed Peas. The couple says, “Everyone was so surprised. The screaming and laughing is audible on the video. It was great!”

Jill’s father made the cake stand. He went to the baker with a paint chip and matched the color of the cake to the cake stand. The stand was perfect.

Rachel met Scott at LSU in the fall of 2003. She was an incoming freshman and her newly as-

signed roommate, Julie, was a good friend of Scott’s. A month later, Scott came over to the girls’ apartment to visit Julie. He and Rachel immediately connected. Rachel says, “It was love at first sight and we were almost inseparable after we met. We’ve had our ups and downs since then, but we always knew that we were going to end up together.” The couple was attending a party at Scott’s parents’ home in Covington. Scott asked Rachel to join him on the front porch. She thought something was fishy, but was completely clueless as to what was about to happen. They were sitting on rocking chairs when Scott got down on one knee and pulled out an opened box. He said, “Will you be my wife?” He was shaking uncontrollably. After a few seconds, Rachel said, “Yes.” Scott immediately closed the box, got up and let out a deep sigh of relief. Somewhat confused, Rachel asked playfully, “Do I get to keep the ring?” Scott started laughing apologetically, put the ring on

Rachel’s finger and began describing in detail how his nerves had gotten the better of him all day. Rachel and Scott were wed on August 27, 2011 at St. Agnes Church in a traditional Catholic ceremony. The bride’s dress was from Pearl’s Place and was made by Maggie Sottero. It was an ivory, mermaid cut, sweetheart top that had a flower on the left side of the ruffled skirt. There were also beads and stones woven throughout the top. The bridesmaids’ dresses also provided by Pearl’s Place were from the Waters and Waters bridal collection. They were also mermaid cut with a sweetheart top, but were chocolate brown. Each bridesmaid carried a beautiful bouquet of pink and ivory flowers supplied by Beth’s Flowers. Beth’s also adorned the ceremony and reception with flowers as well.

“I want professional photos of my wedding, but my brother’s friend’s cousin’s daughter’s babysitter just got a really nice digital camera and she’ll take photos of us and give me a disk of all the images for only $90. She has a website and a Facebook page, so she is legit.”

Here is an analogy for you:

I have bad hair. It’s too thick, and a bad ashy brown color. My brother’s friend’s cousin’s daughter’s

babysitter, Jackie, will cut, weave and blow-dry my hair for $90. My other option is going to Jeff, the hair stylist at the salon across the street. He charges me $250 for a cut, weave and blow-dry. I decide to try both.

I’m sitting in Jackie’s laundry room waiting for her to gather her things when I realize she’s going to wash my hair in the utility sink. Leaning over the sink while kneeling on a folding chair proves a little difficult; she gets shampoo in my eye and water drips down my neck into my shirt. We go into the house and she sits me down in her dining room; her husband is sitting on the couch watching NASCAR and drinking a 40. He leans forward to grab a bag of chips and I notice his butt-crack. I remind myself that since Jackie only charges $90, she probably can’t afford to rent a station in a salon, and so I divert my eyes and forgive her. She begins to cut my hair. It seems to be taking quite a while. She looks a little nervous. I remember that she’s still fairly new to cutting hair. I rationalize that she’s still better than I’d be at it. Plus, she has like 500 fans on her Facebook page, and that has to mean something, right? Jackie disappears to mix my color. She’s gone for a long time. I get nervous that she doesn’t know what she’s doing. What if she screws it up and my hair falls out? I start to wonder… maybe there is a REASON why she only charges $90. Is that

the only way she can get clients? Then Jackie weaves a beautiful blond into my hair. I try to forget about my nerves and begin to get excited. A cut and color for only 90 bucks, I can’t wait to show everyone my hair! She finishes up the blow-dry and I turn to the mirror to discover that my hair is really yellow and brassy. The cut is uneven and boxy. I take a deep breath and calm myself down. Well, it looks better than it did before, I guess, and I only paid $90. The next day I meet up with some girlfriends for drinks. No one says anything about my hair, and I’m afraid to ask what they think because I know it just looks average, or maybe even bad. I feel disappointed. $90 seemed like such a great deal.

I suppose it’s only a deal if the value is greater than $90.

Two months pass and I find myself sitting at Jeff’s sta-tion in the salon across the street. The receptionist offers me a cold drink and the most recent issue of People magazine. Jeff comes over, introduces him-self and asks me what I’d like to accomplish today. We talk for a few minutes about the specific color of blond I’m looking for. He asks me questions about how I style my hair, what I like, what I don’t like, and tells me a little about what’s in style right now. Jeff seems as excited as I am for my new look. I look around to see all the latest flat irons, blow- dryers, collections of brushes and combs. Jeff rattles off instructions to his assistant while examining my hair and she’s back in a jiffy with 4 bowls of color. As Jeff begins to weave in and out of my hair with light blond and medium honey and chestnut brown I close my eyes and listen to the calming music on the satellite radio. I feel relaxed and confident. I trust him. I sit with my hair under the dryer and once again I’m offered a cold drink and a maga-zine. Jeff comes over to inspect the progression of the

color. He exclaims how perfect it looks and brings me to the shampoo station. There is a big cushy leather re-cliner. I put my head back and he begins to wash. The shampoo smells like mint and lavender and he spends an extra few minutes on a mini scalp massage. Jeff dries and styles my hair with ease. When he’s finished he spins my chair around and I hardly recognize myself in the mirror. I look like I belong in a fashion magazine. The cut frames my face perfectly. It’s sassy with a hint of modern, just the right amount to suit my style. The color shimmers as I turn my head. It seems almost as if there are thousands of shades of blond intertwined throughout the locks of hair. It reminds me of what my hair looked like when I was little, after spending all sum-mer in the sun. I feel proud. I meet up with some friends for lunch the next day. They must have commented on my hair 10 times. One of them demanded Jeff’s phone number and asked me how much he charged. “$250, I told her. She replied, “Well it looks a-MAZE-ing, what a great deal.”

The $90 Jackie charged me wasn’t a great deal. The $250 Jeff charged me was. How is that possible? They both gave me a cut, weave and blow-dry.

The difference was the experience and the quality. The $250 that Jeff charged me included a cold diet coke, a comfy chair, state-of-the-art equipment and supplies, experience, knowledge, and a quality prod-uct. It included a feeling of pride and excitement that lasted until it was time to return for more. The $90 Jackie charged me included cheap dye, dull scissors, a wet shirt and a butt-crack.

When I thought about it later, I thought, well wouldn’t it be great to find someone who was somewhere in between, you know, someone who is amazing and cheap? But the problem is there is no such thing as in between. When someone offers quality, they have to charge for it, they have to cover the cost of running the business, continuing education, supplies, market-ing and they have to cut themselves a paycheck. Otherwise they are not running a business.

So if you find yourself presented with what seems like a “great deal” for a wedding vendor that tells you that their competitors’ prices are exorbitant, ask yourself if the $90 is worth an experience with Jackie. Personally, as a client, I’d rather pay $250 for an experience that feels priceless, than waste $90 on something sub par. Value is a magical thing.

The Orleans Ballroom can accommodate up to 185 people, the Pool Courtyard can seat up to 100 people, and the St. Ann Courtyard can seat up to 50 people. Townhouse-style suites with picturesque French Quarter balconies are also available for wedding cer-emonies of 15 guests or less. A small cocktail reception can be held in the suite following your ceremony. You and your guests may also proceed downstairs for a semi-private dinner in the Roux on Orleans Restaurant. GALVEZ RESTAURANTFor years, even prior to the Galvez occupying this space, this venue was always known as one of the most romantic and scenic settings for weddings and receptions. The Galvez Restaurant opened at this locale three years ago and has capitalized upon this wonderful site by being extremely versatile in their wedding options. The Galvez wedding packages are very accommodating for any budget but retain all of the romance and elegance of a unique, New Orleans wedding. The Galvez also offers a variety of options to accommodate different sized weddings. While the capacity for the entire restaurant is 230 people, the Atrium Ballroom can hold up to 100 people inside, and an extra 30 people on the balcony. The Casa Roja can hold up to 70 people, and the private Galvez Room can hold up to 30 guests. As you can see, options abound at the Galvez.

Many Galvez weddings have had the ceremony take place, followed by the reception in the same room. Some weddings have even rented out Dutch Alley for their ceremony, and then second lined into the Atrium ballroom. The Galvez also hosts one of the best panoramic views of the New Orleans skyline, riverfront and French Market area.

Obviously, being a restaurant, one would expect the food at the Galvez to be one of its strengths. You would be absolutely correct. Although normally a Spanish restaurant, when it comes to weddings they can accommodate any type of food choices one may have and are willing to work with you to do so. Chef Laura’s cuisine is honest, fresh and unique and will satisfy even the most discerning palette. The French Market Standard Parking Lot is directly behind the location. JACKSON BREWERY BISTRO BARThe Jackson Brewery Bistro Bar is the newest of our French Quarter venues. Opening their doors in April of 2011, this is an elegant venue that can impress even the pickiest bride. Located in the French Quarter

NEW ORLEANS PADDLEWHEELConstructed in Moss Point, Mississippi, the Paddle-wheeler Creole Queen took her maiden voyage on October 1, 1983. She is an authentic paddlewheeler powered by a 24-foot diameter paddlewheel and the most modern, fuel efficient GE diesel-electric sys-tem ever installed in a boat of this class. When you apply for your marriage license, at least one party must appear in person. He or she must have all the necessary information and documents outlined below.

1. State law requires a cerfitied copy of each party’s birth certificate, if born in Louisiana. Passports are not acceptable. If either party was born out-of-state, a waiver can be submitted. If either party was born out-of-country, a valid passport, naturalization papers, or green card, along with a valid state ID card or driver’s license must be presented at the office, and to a judge to obtain a waiver.

2. If either party is divorced, he/she must present a certified copy of the final divorce decree.

3. If either party is widowed, he/she must present a certified copy of a death certificate.

4. Each party must know his/her social security number, but no documentation is required.

5. Both bride and groom will need to complete a marriage license application; forms can be presented by either applicant in person.

Age RequirementsIf either applicant is under 18 years of age, but more than 16, the marriage is lawful and a license may be issued if the applicants provide: written consent of both parents (or custodian), or an order from a judge or juvenille court. In the event the applicant is under 16, all the above three things will be required.

General InfoA Louisiana license is valid in any parish in Loui-siana for 30 days. There is a 72-hour waiting period between the time of issuance and the ceremony. Only a district judge or Justice of the Peace can waive this. Newlyweds should order a certified copy of their marriage license two weeks after the marriage to ensure that the license has been returned and recorded.

Today’s society seems to have a fascination with resuscitating old trends with a fresh take on the

formerly popular. From the automobile industry recycling classic body styles to the music industry remaking hit songs, borrowing from our past is common practice. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in the fashion industry. With each new runway show, comes a peek into decades past, but with a modern twist that sparks a new trend. So, it is understandable that wedding fashion would also follow suit.

The going-away dress has made a delightful come-back in recent years. It is no longer the Jackie O inspired two-piece dress suit that your mother wore. It can now be found in a variety of colors and styles that

reflect the personality of the very fashion conscious woman of today. Melissa and Mandy from the Bridal Boutique by MaeMe add, “We are definitely seeing a re-emergence of the going-away dress. Brides are choosing everything from a short white or ivory party dress to a colorful cocktail dress for some added flair. There is always something to be said about the perfect, traditional white dress, and even more to be said about something hot pink with feathers!”

The origin of the going away dress can be traced back to the Victorian era and the trousseau. The trousseau is a collection of items that a woman would need in her married life. Up until the last three decades or so, the newly married couple would depart for their honeymoon on their wedding night. Today’s couples tend to wait a day or more before embarking so that they may enjoy the reception and not worry about traveling after such a long day. So, it is understandable as to why the going-away dress fell out of favor. The comeback of this particular fashion has been spurred mainly from designer labels such as J. Crew, which have started offering bridal formal wear for both women and men at affordable prices.

The hype and speculation of Kate Middleton’s dress choices for her wedding to Prince William of England also gave the going-away dress the spotlight in the public eye recently. She ultimately wore two Alexander McQueen dresses on her wedding day, one for her cer-emony and public appearance, and one for her recep-tion. Her going away dress however, was a completely understated Zara dress in blue with black LK Bennett pumps. Another highly anticipated celebrity wedding also gave the going-away dress some attention. Kim Kardashian had three outfit changes for her

big day. Her final dress was a white Vera Wang satin v-neck gown. Both celebrities chose dresses that reflected their individual style, one being more modern, and the other more traditional.

Though a short length, white going away dress is predominant, patterned and brightly colored frocks have also hit the scene in a big way. Many local boutiques have seen this growing trend and have welcomed it. Karen from Blink on Magazine Street says, “Recently, a young lady was fitted in a white chiffon, one-shouldered cocktail dress while her friend favored a more traditional ecru sheath with ruffles in just the right places. We finished the looks with current accessories. The necklaces and bracelets completed the look that both soon to be brides were looking for.”

With all of the delightful dress options available these days, we are likely to see the going-away dress’s revival. Whether you choose the more traditional path or venture into a more modern, edgy route, the dress should be a reflection of your individual style. Shirin and Nicholas met as juniors at the University of Pennsylvania through a mutual friend and instantly

hit it off. Nick claims that he immediately knew that he would marry Shirin, though she was reluctant to succumb to his ample southern charms. After ten stressful years, several long distance stints, a couple of Wharton MBA’s, two grueling Manhattan work schedules and a whole lot of love, the couple finally got hitched. Shirin says, “After a decade of taking his sweet molasses time, Nick enlisted my sister’s help to truly surprise me for his proposal. I thought we were spending Thanksgiving with his family in New Orleans while my family celebrated the holiday in Austin. The doorbell rang on Thanksgiving Day, and I was surprised to discover that my entire family had driven in from Austin to surprise me. After a flood of happy tears and some expensive champagne, Nick got down on one knee and popped the question.” From the initial planning stages, the couple decided that the point of their wedding was not really to focus on themselves. They set out to give their guests an experience they’d remember, while genuinely capturing their personalities and cultures in the

process. To that end, after their rehearsal dinner, a weekend kick-off party was held for all of their guests, setting the tone for the entire weekend. Shirin and Nicholas were united in marriage on a March 19, 2011 in a Catholic ceremony held at the St. Louis Cathedral. Fr. Anthony J. McGinn, S.J., President of Jesuit High School, officiated the service. After exiting the Cathedral, guests second lined down to the reception venue where a cocktail hour and cigar roller awaited guests. After the cocktail hour, a Persian wedding ceremony took place and Shirin and Nicholas were once again pronounced man and wife. Shirin’s dress was from a small boutique in Manhattan that helped create and customize exactly what she was looking for—a sweetheart neckline, strapless, ivory, A-line with a flirty, flowing bottom and a jeweled belt to compliment her sparkly necklace and earrings. The boutique also created a custom, cathedral length veil. The bridesmaids wore deep red, strapless dresses complimented by gold jewelry. The bride wore 2 pairs of shoes on her wedding day – sparkly Jimmy Choo stilettos, and deep green Prada platform heels.

Nicholas wore a custom tuxedo created in Hong Kong while the groomsmen wore morning coats and ascots.

Mardi Gras Indians ushered guests from the Persian ceremony to the reception. The couple chose the popular wedding band No Idea to provide music at the reception. Shirin says, “They played an amazing mix of top 40, wedding classics, and an ‘80s set that to this day my friends are talking about. A DJ was also on hand and played a mix of Persian music and top 40 hits while accompanied by a dhol drum player.

The couple chose Atelier NOLA to photograph the wedding. They add, “Nonney and Ole are amazing to work with and take amazing photos.” Dyle Films was chosen to video the wedding and the couple found them to be unobtrusive and easy to work with as well.

It was love at first sight, the perfect fit for your perfect day - your wedding dress. Although you wore it only once, if you take as much care in preserving your wedding dress as you did in choosing it, then it can be enjoyed as a family heirloom for years to come-symbolizing love and family. Here are a few tips to keep your beloved garment as beautiful as the day you wore it.

1. You can either have your dress professionally preserved, or you can do it yourself. Either way, your dress should be cleaned within six weeks following your wedding day. Even the smallest stains cause the dress to yellow over time.

2. Professional gown preservation costs between $150 and $500, depending on the amount of soilage. It is recommended to bring your dress to a reputable dry cleaner who cleans about 100 dresses or more a year.

3. If you choose to take things into your own hands, then you must first decide between box and hanger storage. It may be more practical to store the dress in a box, but hanger storage is the best way to prevent hard-to-remove creases. Either way, buy plenty of acid-free tissue paper.

4. For box storage, line an acid-free cardboard box with the tissue paper and lay the hem of the dress in the box. Fold the dress like an accordion, putting tissue paper between each fold. Stuff the bodice of the dress with crumpled tissue. Put some layers of tissue on top and put on the lid (make sure the lid is solid and does not have a plastic window). Store the box in a cool, dry closet. Check the condition of the dress each year, and re-pack so the folds are in different places.

5. For hanger storage, wrap a wide hanger with cotton batting and cover it with muslin. Buy an acid-free cardboard “dress shaper” and place it over the hanger. Wrap it in tissue and place the dress over it. Stuff the bodice of the dress and any deep folds with the acid-free tissue paper. Cover the dress with a muslin garment bag and hang it in a cool, dry closet, taking care not to crush it with other clothing. Check the dress each year and wash the muslin cover.

From TIGERS to BEARS to MARRIAGE, oh my...!Former Al l -Amer ican footbal l p layer for L .S .U. and current safety for Chicago Bears, Craig Steltz marries his high school sweetheart Lindsay Comeaux in New Orleans.


Craig Steltz was an All-American football player at L.S.U. and finished his career there in 2007 as a national champion. The Chicago Bears drafted Craig in April of 2008 and he is currently in his fourth season with the Bears.

Lindsay Comeaux met Craig Steltz on Halloween night. They were both freshmen in high school and were attending a large party in Metairie. Lindsay recalls, “ I saw a cute blonde standing in the distance, and I decided to go up to him and introduce myself. Lucky for me, he still needed a date to his homecoming dance.” Lindsay and Craig went to Rummel’s homecoming dance on December 9, 2000, and have been together ever since.

Fast-forwarding to June 2009, Lindsay and Craig decided to spend the weekend in downtown Chicago. They stayed at an amazing condo right off of Michigan Avenue, which was centrally located to everything. On Saturday evening June 6, before going out to dinner, Craig took Lindsay onto the balcony of the condo, which overlooked the city.

It was there that Craig asked Lindsay to marry him. Lindsay says, “It was just the two of us, and it was perfect!”

Lindsay and Craig were married on June 25, 2011 at the Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church with a reception that followed. After trying on about 100 dresses in Chicago, Lindsay finally found the dress that she was searching for-about 1000 miles from there. She purchased her dress from Pearl’s Place in Metairie and says that they were a pleasure to work with! Her dress was an ivory, silk taffeta, fit and flare dress with a bubble hem. Lindsay’s favorite detailing on the dress was the beading that lined the sweetheart top. Bustles and Bows provided Lindsay’s cathedral length veil. The bridesmaids wore short, one-shoulder dresses that were peacock-blue.

New Orleans Tuxedos was chosen to provide tuxes for Craig and his groomsmen. Craig had rented tuxes from Mr. Ray, the store owner, in the past, and says that he is so great to work with.

Professional wedding photographers have three different and distinct approaches. The three approaches are:

PHOTOJOURNALISTIC APPROACHPhotojournalism is one of today’s most popular styles of wedding photography. The primary goal is to tell a unique story of your wedding, including the nerves, anxiety, laughter, tears and anticipation. It’s more than the specific poses, as it strives to document the emotions and energy of the day.

TRADITIONAL APPROACHThe traditional approach is definitely considered formal photography and consists of those posed pictures with your family, bridesmaids and friends. This is the oldest form of wedding photography and incorporates a handful of portraits from formal groupings to table-combination pictures. “Traditional shots are what most people expect to see, posed family and bridal party shots before and after the ceremony, important moments during the ceremony…the bride and groom looking at each other at the altar, the ring exchange and the first kiss,” says Johnson. A good combination is using the traditional approach to achieve a formal feel to the pictures, while also incorporating the photojournalistic approach to capture some of the candid emotions surrounding the wedding.

ARTISTIC APPROACHThe artistic approach includes everything from specifically colored images to soft-focus lenses. The key to the artistic approach is to use it to highlight a particular moment and make the wedding album a visual story of your special day.

You need to decide what approaches you feel work best for what you’re looking for based on the research you’ve conducted. If you like more than one style, don’t be afraid to incorporate different approaches because at the end of the day, you want to tell your own unique wedding story while still allowing the photographer artistic freedom.

No stress leads to better smiles and great pictures,” says Johnson. Wedding photography is perhaps the one aspect of weddings that is most misunderstood. Make sure that you do your research and decide upon the photographer that can give you the best style suited for your wedding. “I believe that most professional photographers can offer any style that the bride and groom requests. However, some [photographers] are more specialized,” says Billiot. DIET, DON’T FAIL ME NOW

Some women have every detail of their wedding planned from the moment they see a shiny glimmer

in a velvet box. Other women hire a wedding planner and hardly give it a second thought. But at some point during the lead-up to the long march down the aisle, just about every woman decides she needs to lose a few pounds.

It is normal to want to look and feel your best on your big day. Chances are, however, that most brides-to-be have invested more time, money and energy into the actual wedding day than they have into their own health. Just as the wedding is a prelude to a momentous life change, pre-wedding weight loss can kickoff a lifetime of healthy eating habits.

As a dietitian, I believe the key to sustaining a healthy weight anniversary after anniversary is to avoid falling prey to these dieting dead ends.

What you don’t know can hurt you. When a diet gets derailed, the main culprit is usually a lack of proper education. Bad information is out there and everyone—from talk show hosts to TV stars to your impossibly thin best friend— has some dieting “wisdom” to impart. The confusion this causes often means people give up before they even begin. Before you start a new diet, be sure to get the facts on what will work for you as an individual. Instant gratification is not very gratifying. I see many clients who quit when they don’t see immediate results. Weight loss should be slow, no more than one to two pounds a week. If weight loss is a goal for your big day, start the planning now. It probably took more than a week to put on those extra pounds, so be patient as the weight comes off slowly, but steadily.

Less may actually mean more. A common myth in dieting is that starvation means results. However, un-der eating can actually cause weight gain, just like overeating can. In addition, when you starve your body, you slow your metabolism, leading to future weight gain- think 5 year wedding anniversary!!

Reality doesn’t bite. An essential tool in living a healthy lifestyle is learning to be realistic. No one can give up eating pasta, sweets or chips forever. Be real with yourself and your cravings. Don’t deprive yourself. Rather, learn to work these foods into a healthy lifestyle.

A diet is forever. The final reason I believe most diets fail is that they are thought of as a temporary phase in one’s life. You say to yourself, “I can do this diet until I get married in three months, and then I can go back eating the way I used to.” The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to make a permanent lifestyle change that’s suitable for you.

Eating well is a daily challenge but does not have to be difficult. Your best bet is to seek a trained professional (registered dietitian) who can develop a meal plan for you that works with exactly what your body needs in a time-appropriate manner. A healthy lifestyle essential for every “I DO”!

Terrence met Iesha in the summer of 2003 at a jazz club in Houston. He was visiting from New Orleans.

Iesha had recently graduated from Prairie View A&M School of Nursing in Houston and was exhausted from the rigorous nature of her nursing coursework and her new full time job. Her friends talked her into going out that night. She didn’t put much effort into her look that evening and just threw on some jeans, a t-shirt, and put her hair in a ponytail. Terrence thought that she looked cute. He called her a “sleeper,” which Iesha later found out meant that she was a hidden beauty in his eyes. The couple dated long distance until after Hurricane Katrina when Terrence decided to move to Houston. Iesha took Terrence to dinner for his birthday at one of their favorite restaurants in Houston. After dinner, the waiter mysteriously brought out a second dessert. As Iesha turned to ask him about it, Terrence got down on one knee with the ring in his hand and asked for her hand in marriage. He used the second dessert as a distraction while positioning himself. When Iesha accepted, the entire restaurant cheered and the waiter presented her with a bouquet of roses and a bottle of champagne.

Iesha and Terrence were wed on September 4, 2011 in New Orleans. They had a rehearsal dinner in St. Bernard Parish at the home of one of Terrence’s many uncles. Wanting their guests to feel cozy and experience the unique qualities of Louisiana, they had Louisiana soul food and a traditional seafood boil with shrimp and crab. Their friends and family from Texas never left the dinner table and others were found napping on large sofas.

Iesha and Terrence chose some of New Orleans’ top wedding vendors to work their wedding.

Brenda Sison was chosen to photograph the wedding and Kirk from One Louder Productions was the official videographer. The couple chose another New Orleans institution, Gambino’s Bakery, to provide their wedding cake.

Lori and Todd met in their sophomore year of high school but dated only briefly before becoming good

friends. They started dating again in 2007 when Todd went to visit Lori in Dallas at the wedding of another friend of theirs. They have been together ever since.

Todd took Lori to dinner and then for a walk around the French Quarter. It took him a while to pop the question, but he eventually did so on the steps near the river, across from Jackson Square. Lori readily accepted and the wedding was on.

The couple was married on October 9, 2010 at the St. Louis Cathedral with a reception that followed. They had a ton of out of town guests as Lori went to school in Georgia and Todd’s family is from Alabama. This was to be a totally New Orleans themed wedding. The girls got ready for the big day at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel. Heather from Flawless Bride was chosen to do their hair and makeup, Sandra O’Claire was the official photographer and One Louder Productions did the video. The flowers were kept

purposefully subtle to let the beauty of the Cathedral shine. Lori wanted her bouquet to be mostly eggplant in hue with other dark colors so that it would pop against her white dress. For the girls, Lori wanted bright flowers that would contrast with their dark dresses.

John’s Tuxedos provided tuxedos for the groomsmen. Todd chose for the boys to wear bow ties with suspenders. The girls wore eggplant, Jim Hjelm dresses. The wedding cake was white with eggplant accents with an eggplant colored Swarovski crystal “B” on top. The flavors alternated between pecan praline, pineapple and traditional butter cream. The groom’s cake was a king cake with the bottom layer being Saints colors, the middle layer done in LSU colors, and the top layer done in Auburn colors.

Lori adds, “I tried to make everything in the wedding reflect our personalities—from the little rhinestone details on my shoes, which were actually clip-on earrings from my grandmother, to handpicking all of

Lori and Todd spent their honeymoon on a Mediterranean cruise (Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Sicily.) They then spent two nights in Rome before flying home.

The planes have landed and the cars have been parked. Your out of town wedding guests have arrived.

Where will they stay? How will they get to your wedding location? Is their hotel located in a convenient area? All of these are often asked questions and by following these tips and tricks, your guests are sure to enjoy an affordable, fun and stress-free stay.

Planning ahead is essential in getting the best deals on accommodations and it also aids in avoiding any last minute issues. It’s important to give yourself at least a two or three month head start. You can often save your guests money by reserving a hotel block. Hotel blocks allow your guests to feel more relaxed because there will be friends and family in the same vicinity and everyone will be together to coordinate travel plans upon arrival. Usually, hotels will require a minimum of 10 rooms for blocks unless you are holding your reception on their property. In this case, they will generally lower the minimum requirement. Be sure to advise your guests of the cut-off date for making reservations so that they are assured of receiving the discounted rates. Keeping your guests’ accommodations less than 10 miles from the wedding location is also wise as it eases any travel worries and cuts down on travel time.

Options for accommodating your guests abound in our great city. Our city’s uniqueness offers a plethora of alternatives to the traditional hotel. There are a variety of bed and breakfasts and plantation homes available to house your guests. These places, although a bit more expensive, offer a more exclusive and private atmosphere. They will also help your guests to immerse themselves in the beauty and culture of our city and give them an experience not easily discovered elsewhere. See the bottom of the page for a great plantation option.

Welcoming your guests can be fun and personal and it sets the tone for their entire wedding experience. Furnishing their rooms with a gift basket or traveler’s survival kit is a thoughtful and hospitable way to

welcome them to the city and to your wedding. Be creative. Include the theme of the wedding in the design of the gift basket and add a personal note or a little joke that only the two of you would understand. Your guests will love the personal attention. A few more suggestions of items to include in gift baskets are: local restaurant menus, decadent chocolate dis-

plays, a collection of specialty food items only found in your city, and directions to local museums and parks. For laughs, you could even provide energy drinks or pain relievers to assist in post-party recovery.

Information regarding the wedding should be paramount. Be sure to provide all the pertinent facts that your guests w i l l n e e d i n c l u d i n g : a wedding timeline that will reiterate the dates, times, and locations of all your wedding events, directions from the hotel to the various wedding events, a city map to help guests navigate around town, directions to public transportation and a list of taxi services with phone numbers. If you have a bus r e s e r v e d f o r w e d d i n g transportation, do include a

list of pick-up and drop-off times. By adding these personal touches it not only shows your guests that you’re glad they came, but it lets them know that you did all you could to make their trip as comfortable and fun as possible. After the vows are said and the wine bottles emptied, your out of town guests deserve a proper goodbye. Day-after brunches are becoming more common and can serve as a time for reminiscing and post-celebration recuperation. This is also a good time to give your out of town guests a departing wedding favor to express your gratitude, such as a card, a praline or a Hubig’s pie. Your guests will have now received a welcoming basket, travelling goodies and a departing gift. You will have completely welcomed their presence to your wedding and helped them to have a safe and enjoyable experience in our city.

Jennifer Haase and Ross Gonzales met at a Holy Cross high school dance. Jennifer’s mother was a teacher

there and she and Ross had a close relationship. Ross really wanted to meet Jennifer but was trying to muster up the courage. Finally, they were virtually placed in front of each other at a Holy Cross dance and the introduction was made. Until a few years ago, the relationship was tough to define. They were friends, they were enemies, they dated a little; they could never get it right. It was as if their timing was always off, yet, there was always a special connection between them. Ultimately, Ross decided that they needed to have an official first date and he asked Jennifer to lunch. After that, a whirlwind courtship began.

Ross took Jennifer on a surprise weekend “staycation” to a quaint little hotel in the French Quarter. It was her birthday weekend. On Saturday, after walking around the French Quarter in high heels, Jennifer’s feet were hurting. She kept trying to pull Ross into every boutique they passed in order to buy some comfortable shoes. Little did she know, he had a professional photographer at the ready. Ross asked Jennifer to take a picture in

front of the fountain outside of the St. Louis Cathedral. She obliged, and as Ross got down on one knee, the photographer jumped out from behind the bushes. Jennifer momentarily lost touch with reality and felt like she was floating on cloud nine. She says, “I didn’t even feel my feet anymore!” The engagement complete, the couple were to become one.

Jennifer and Ross were married on July 30, 2011 at St. Dominic Church, where the bride attended grammar school. Jennifer was a third-generation bride to be married at St. Dominic.

Jennifer wore a diamond-white Maggie Sottero gown with a sweetheart neckline that was beaded at the top and fitted at the hips before flaring. The gown had lacy straps but transformed into a strapless gown for the reception. Her veil was trimmed with crystals that matched the beading on the dress. The bridesmaids wore mulberry colored dresses of shantung silk with a light lavender satin sash. Cluster necklaces of gray pearls with matching earrings accented the look.

Fine Arts Ensemble provided the music for the Mass. Kelly says, “Dimitri was exceedingly talented and

knowledgeable and helped us in making the perfect music selections for our ceremony. We have received many requests for their contact information since the wedding.”

Abbey Printing provided the invitations for the wedding. Melissa at Abbey helped the couple select a square, ecru invitation with a delicately trimmed border. Beth’s Flowers was chosen as the florist. Jennifer adds, “When we first met with Sue, all I knew was that I wanted purple flowers. She was able to expertly guide us through the entire selection process. The remarkable thing was that she didn’t just show us a picture of what she could do for us, she actually got up and made a sample bride’s bouquet there on the spot. She did the same for the bridesmaids’ bouquets and the pew markers. Sue also allowed us to come in the day before the wedding to look at all of our flowers and make any changes if we wanted. She made what we thought was going to be an overwhelming process such a pleasure.”

Their wedding cake was a beautiful white on white, 7-tiered, almond-flavored cake. Each tier was decorated a little differently and the couple’s monogram was included on one of the tiers. The ten Victorian cake pulls were sterling silver charms attached to custom-made crystal bracelets. The design of the groom’s cake, directed by Ross himself, was a stack of books displaying titles depicting the groom’s personality. Among the 7 titles were Marriage for Dummies, A House Divided (she’s an LSU grad; he’s a Tulane grad), JENgineering, and The Heauxly Bible. Guests snapped as many pictures of the groom’s cake as they did of the bride.

“Big Easy Limos were the best,” says Jennifer. “My dad and I rode to the church in their vintage Rolls Royce, while our wedding party and families led the way in Cadillac Escalades.” Their experienced driver made the trip to the church a smooth one.

“Our photographer, Stacy Marks, was fabulous from beginning to end,” Jennifer says. “Stacy was the first vendor we booked about 16 months before the big day because we loved his unique, creative style and the way he captured the true spirit of weddings. Stacy got every shot we would have hoped for and many more.” The couple selected Dyle Films to video their wedding. Jennifer and Ross loved their cinematic approach and the way that they are able to capture the small things. The couple also adds, “He and his crew were very friendly and accommodating.”
