Students outperform their year level Over the last two years St Anthony’s has focused on each student realising their academic
potential despite their grade level – we call this ‘Breaking down the walls’. We have seen
students in Year 10 undertake VCE subjects; students undertaking extension studies in
their class cluster e.g. Year 4 students working with Year 5 students in maths and
literacy ; and the extra literacy and numeracy emphasis in Middle school seeing students
2-3 years above their class level on nationally-normed tests.
I will be inviting some parents to meet with myself and teachers over the next few weeks
to consider promoting these students in the middle of the year. There are also others who
may benefit from Term 4 in a higher year level. The purpose is to challenge and excite our
students to reach their potential. You will be invited to discuss this possibility for your
child. This is an important academic and social decision made only with parent and teacher
consent. If we do not contact you and you think your child would benefit from this
opportunity, and has outstanding abilities for his or her level, please contact me at the
College on 97863145.

College News Principal’s Awards In 2011 the College instituted the Principal’s Award for students whose
work or participation in the college community was brought to the
Principal’s attention. They are rewarded by having their work displayed on
the Principal’s Wall near the entrance for all our visitors to see, as well as an
award certificate presented at assembly. Congratulations to these recent re-
cipients: Theodora Nan Year 3, Lol Wichthiel Year 2, Piear Baselyous Year
4 and this week’s recipient Mary Tadross for her great artwork!
May Awards: At the start of June awards were given to 2-3 students at every year level to
recognise their achievement and hard work.
This is a monthly celebration.
Congratulation to our may recipient of Awards
Canteen to open in Term 3 The college canteen will be open for business in Term 3. A contract has been
finalised with a new provider who will operate the canteen 5 days a week
from the start of term 3. New menus and details of how it will work for
lunch orders will be given to students at the end of this term and be placed
on the website.
College News Last day of school Term 2 Last day of school for students is Wednesday 27th June. They return to
Term 3 on Tuesday 17th July.
The last day of school is a FREE DRESS DAY. A $2 coin must be paid if
students are in free dress. This supports the College’s fundraising efforts.
Cookies and muffins will also be available for purchase with the funds
going to the Salvation Army Winter Appeal.
Thank you to Year 4 students for organising this event.
Why our school has a ‘no-touch’ policy? There has been lots of media coverage this week about a nearby school
which introduced a ‘no touch’ policy. There was lots of outrage about
students not being able to hug or touch each other.
At St Anthony’s we have had this policy for two years now. It discourages
students pushing, play fighting, physical bullying as well as unwanted
physical contact from students of the opposite sex.
The policy reflects our Christian ethos of respect, acceptance and care of
others as well as building a culture where students are responsible for their
own actions.
However, it is applied with common sense. Our students undertaking PE
or sport will be involved in contact sports and often one of senior students
is helping an upset or injured junior student to sickbay or the office. It has
worked very well in our environment where we have Prep to Year 12
students in a coeducational setting.
If you have any questions or concerns about this policy please contact me
at the College.
Gary Underwood,
Principal.

New furniture, shelving and cupboards St Anthony’s would like to thank Monash University for their generous gift of ‘almost’ new
furniture which is no longer needed by the university. We have been able to supply almost
all our secondary classrooms with new adult size tables and adult padded seating.
The university also supplied shelving for library centres in the
primary rooms as well as cabinets for storage. On top of this we received 4 huge tables
which will be fabulous in our revamped art room and numerous white boards. Thank you to
the members of the Coptic community who helped make this possible.
Also a big thank you to Neil at AMAX transport and Storage for helping us get the
furniture from Monash to the College at a very low rate. In you need transport or storage
contact AMAX on 1300 305 861 or at www.amaxremovals.com.au Monday to Friday from

Gingerbread Men in the Making
On Thursday 24th May the students in Year 2 made gingerbread people. They measured and
mixed. The sifted and stirred. They rubbed and rolled. Each student made three gingerbread
people. They were able to choose from gingerbread boy cutters or gingerbread girl cutters.
They made a small, middle and large gingerbread person. There were many activities that
week that involved The Gingerbread Man story as well.

GE volunteers help create
Teddy Bear Day at St Anthony’s
GE volunteers help create Teddy Bear Day at St Anthony’s On Wednesday 6th June, many volunteers from the company GE came into St Anthony’s
Coptic Orthodox College and helped the Prep, Year One and Year Two classes to make teddy
bears. This was organised by Lucette Talbot through the Ardoch Foundation. St Anthony’s
students and staff sincerely thank GE and Lucette for the fantastic opportunity. Every student
went home with a teddy bear of their choice. Extra bears were made for students who were
absent on the day so that no-one would feel left out. We opened all the doors between the
classrooms and used the big open spaces we had. It was great!
This is the first step in making
teddies. Asad has the ‘flat’ teddy
Here is Asad putting stuffing inside the teddy
shape. It was tricky getting it inside the legs and
arms. We had white fluff all over the big space.
And finally, here is Asad with his finished
teddy, ready to be loved and cuddled.

Year One and Two at the
Melbourne Museum
On Wednesday 13th June, 34 students and 11 adults (and one toddler) went to Melbourne
Museum. I would like to say a big thank you to the volunteers who came with us and an
even bigger thank you to the parents who gave up their time to attend. You were all
awesome.
The students were very well behaved and so excited about all the different exhibitions
they were going to see. After we got off the buses, we had morning tea and then entered
the Museum. Our first activity was the dinosaur walk. Students saw models of many
different dinosaurs including models of their teeth, which they could touch.
Teeth are very different depending on whether a dinosaur is a carnivore or an herbivore.
Second, we went to Bugs Alive! This was an awesome exhibition with real live bugs to
look at, listen to and even smell! After lunch most groups watched a 3D movie on how
rocks formed and later went to the Marine Life exhibit. Diane Kassiotis Grade 1 Teacher
