Project profile
2014 - 2017Incubating energy ecency as a prime resource
India is the world’s third largest greenhouse gas emitter. Gases from coal-fired power plants are the main cause of these emissions in India. Air-conditioning uses the lion’s share of electricity.
The real estate sector is booming but attention is rarely paid to designing energy efficient buildings.
In India, energy efficiency is the most abundant source of energy, the cheapest also and yet the one that has received the least attention compared to the construction of new coal-fired power plants.
On the basis of these observations, Noe21, the Geneva based NGO in partnership with cBalance, the social enterprise from Pune (Maharashtra), identified fields for direct intervention in which they could speed up the development of a culture of energy efficiency in indoor thermal comfort.
The programme is based on four interventions taking place in: Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad.
Academic Ambassadors: integrating new courses for architecture and engineering students to ensure they aquire knowledge to build energy efficient buildings.
Modelling building consumption: workshops aimed at SMEs to model the annual energy consumption of buildings post thermal renovations and to encourage SMEs to undertake such renovations.
Consumer Ambassadors: Lobbying hotel chains, prestigious universities and banks to adopt the most efficient cooling techniques and turning them into Consumer Ambassadors to influence competitors.
Behaviour change: Big employers are encouraged to turn their A/C thermostats «up by 2°C» and to adapt the corporate dress code accordingly, this intervention reduces energy consumption by 15%.
