The 51st Dimitria Festival is here, with a special, and always innovative, programme, sensitive to artistic and social issues, including drama, music, literary events, visual art events, dance, cinema, performance eventsand workshops. Once again this autumn, despite our introversion and the difficult timeswe are experiencing, the Dimitria Festival invites us and invites Thessaloniki to connect directly.Be there! This experience, with its fine arts and technology, set against a backdrop of streets, words, images, bodies, buildings and those points on the urban map where energy and communication are to produced, where exciting new horizons will open up and where “moments” will be recorded through multiple narratives and from a range of views.Cityval! This is our aim: a dialogue with the city through the arts, communication between people and trends, coexisting in thisfragmented world and partaking in this broader horizon and perspective. An attempt at coexistence through tuning in at 42 events, which will fearlessly venture to unite and rally Thessaloniki, within a broad spectrum of artistic anthropogeography and unconventional viewpoints-spectacles.Cosmopolitan, eccentric – literally and metaphorically – daring and sensitive, this year Dimitria Festival is venturing to make another “leap”, dreaming of a Thessaloniki that will not be beat. With a revisionist attotide, free of clichés, oriented to what is fresh and vibrant, yet invisible to most “at present”, this year’s Dimitria invites you to take it in through a kaleidoscopic art experience, participating in the here and now. This may, in fact, be the definition-challenge of this year's institution. This city as it is today, no longer the Thessaloniki of yesterday, nothing more than the Thessaloniki of tomorrow.

“Ex-It” installation,Films and Performances

Yoko Ono

Visual artist, director, performer, activist and multimedia interactive artist, Yoko Ono is the “big gun” at this year's Dimitria, as she is taking over the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art for a month. John Lennon's eternal partner is still restless, undisciplined, unclassifiable, autonomous, using a language that is entirely her own; steadily orbiting the avant-garde and the conceptual,Ono touches upon and hovers between dreamlike fantasy and realism. With her Ex-it installation – a comment on life, death, return and reincarnation – excites audiences' imaginations, while her well-known interactive project, 'Skyladders', and many other performances regarding immigration, as well as her lifebefore and after the musical legend John Cage – because that is what Sky Piece to Jesus is – Lennon's muse will shake the Greek visual arts scene, and Thessaloniki even more so, in a dreamy and revisionist way. Because “Yoko Ono” means... destroy convention, release the energy. In the spirit of Fluxus and Imagine and mobilising the crème de la crème of Thessaloniki's art scene, we are certainly in for a unique exhibition.

How interesting could it be for an opera diva to singMozart's 'Magic Flute' for the 222nd time? Bernhard forces his protagonist to cancel her scheduled appearances and to retire to the countryside with her blind father. However, he, a drunk and a miser, has placed all his prospects in life on his daughter's career. Stavros Gasparatos Expanded Piano

Imagine a piano taking on the dimensions of a concert halland each one of the audience members experiencing the work as though they were inside the instrument. Is it possible for a musical work to simulate the experience of being inside a piano for each and every member of the audience? The answer is provided by award winning, new generation, Greek composer Stavros Gasparatos (well known for his theatre music and film scores) with his work 'Expanded Piano'. This installation – musical piece is inspired by the idea of the 'Prepared Piano': a mechanically altered piano that was made famous by John Cage and others, who inserted screws, springs and various other objects into the piano strings, distorting its sound.

The seminar on the 'expanded piano' project installation (inspiration and realisation) is addressed to musicians and artists working in the fields of art communication and technology.

In Spite Of Wishing And Wanting(Belgium)

Dance performanceUltima Vez

After almost three decades in action, the Ultima Vez dance group is still in the spotlight, attracting the attention of critics and audiences. When, in 1999, they first performed 'In Spite Of Wishing And Wanting' they caused a lot of discussion. Itwas the first time that the group's founder, choreographer, director and film maker Wim Vandekeybus had created a performance both about the chemistry between men and women and about primordial desire in an exclusively maleworld. Enchanting shots of dance supported by David Byrne’s sensual soundtracks, lead to “monologues” on fear, the longing for security and the magic of sleep. In 2016 a completely new cast has picked up the gauntlet of undertaking the challenge.

Compassion. The History of the Machine Gunby Schaubühne Berlin Theatre (Germany) directed by Milo Rau

In this play, Swiss director Rau – perhaps one of the “biggest” names among theatre directors in Europe – and Schaubuhne Berlin Theatre - the largest subsidised German Drama Group - take us on a journey to the “hottest” political destinations of our times: To the Mediterranean routes followed by refugees from the Middle East and to the war zones of Congo. A documentary – performance in the form of a double monologue, based on interviews given by members of NGOs, as well as clerics and war victims in Africa and Europe. A performance that explores controversial issues: Why does one dead person at the gates of Europe overshadow the thousands of dead in the war zones of Congo?

In the framework of this year's Dimitria, the National Theatre of Northern Greece is opening its costume collection to reminds us all of important moments from its 55 years of operation. The costume exhibition, which presents costumes designed by major costume designers that have worked with the NTNG, features creations from emblematic performances staged by Greece's second national theatre. Impressive costumes, made with luxurious materials, as well as pioneering creations made from unexpected and imaginative raw materials, are here to underline once again the importance of... “appearances”.The exhibition was planned and curated by set and costume designer Ioulia Stavridou.

What place does imagination have in the real world? Whatis home? Can a person with a disability freely shape the environment in which they live? Is the welfare system capable of serving individual needs and desires? And who can answer the torturous and persistent question of a parent asking:“What will happen to my child when I am gone?”The restless 'En Dynami' Group, its members with and without disabilities, explores the concept of space as a reflection of the identity of an individual. On the borderline between documentary-theatre and devised theatre, the performance is based on an idea by artistic director Eleni Dimopoulou and produced by the Onassis Cultural Centre. Created from a collection of personal stories of its members related to disability.

His third album, 'Press Enter', in particular, released under the ACT label, was characterised by the New York Times as “a winning album”, while other critics talked of “an absolute masterpiece”.Collin continues to develop a unique “voice”, a crystal clear perspective, making his mark on the New York scene and internationally. If nothing else, Collin is an artist from the new generation of jazz musicians who will have people talking, as he has achieved a personal and modern perspective, combining the tradition of improvisation, modern approach and classical influences.

This participation is also the spark that created the musical performance 'le rebétiko aujourd’hui - société et réalité'. Arve Henriksen & Jan Bang Duo (Norway)

Norwegian Arve Henriksen is probably one of the most multifaceted musicians of his generation. This subversive trumpet player is enthralled by the sound of the Japanese shakuhachi flute with its minimalist expressive quality, the roots of which can be traced back to Buddhist tradition. However, Henriksen’s interests do not end there. He draws inspiration from every type of traditional music, including Norwegian, while he is now exploring more modern genres, more electronic approaches and different ways of utilising his trumpet. This is more or less how his collaboration with Jan Bang came about. Bang went from a successful pop producer in the '90s, due to his pioneering work in live remixing and electronic improvisation, to being in constant demand, even by the most conventional artists.

MirandaBased on Shakespeare's 'Tempest'by Theatro Poriadirected by Oskaras Korsounovas

It seems like a fairytale for adults with a lust for power, and the interminable battles they fight to conquer it. This is 'Miranda', the performance directed by Oskaras Korsounovas, based on Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'. This reading of the play allows us to see the mythical events that take place on Prospero's island as a “repetition of the history of the world” and, indeed, from its farcical perspective.'Miranda' takes us on a journey to the time just before the end ofnthe Colonels' dictatorship in Greece, when a father lives “stranded”, “exiled” in his own flat, with his daughter’s company.Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' provides them with entertainment; its their recreation, a habit, but, at the same time, it becomes a confession, a torture, and, ultimately, redemption.

Two daring playwrights risked taking a “dangerous” journey to North Korea, and, through the vehicle of documentary-theatre, narrate their experience, mixed with personal prejudices, as well as harsh and revealing imagery of North Korean society, where western society's eyes have no access. At the same time they attempt to answer, in drama game terms, the question regarding whether what we see in Northern Korea is more (or less) dangerous than what we can see in the rest of the world.

Wot? Not Fishby the Bread & Circuses group (UK)

Just imagine 55 years of married life recorded on more than 3,000... love notes: From the pride experienced at the birthof their first child, to the acrobatics of a rich love life and theirautistic second son's confinement and subsequent death, up to London's WWII blitz and marital nagging, because one wanted to buy a fur coat and the other always looked scruffy. It all started in 1926 when shoemaker Ab Solomons unconsciously doodled a sketch on the brown envelope in which he gave his wife, Shelley, his weekly wages. During their marriage until 1982, Abe developed his art, drawing something on the envelope for Shelley every week.
