Reinhard Spitzy - 4529

To:

Direction of Foreign Organization of the NSDAP

Berlin W 15 TiergartenStrasse 4.

Re: Reinhard_anitzgl born on 11 February 112 in Graz..

With regard to the letter of the Foreign Organization

of 18 February 1938 we would like to inform you that Reinhard

Spitzy has entered the USDAP on 26 October 1931 under member-

ship Mo. 612)629.

We also want to inform you that the above was a member

of the former Styrian Homeland Protection from 1928 to 1930.

Spitzy had to leave Austria in July 1933 because of his

activities for the former Austrian NSDAP and was recognized as

a political refugee by the NSDAP refugee relief. (Refugee

certificate No. 4529).

An Inquiry at the investigation office of the NSDAP

refugee relief work showed that nothing prejudicial has

become known so far against the above.

Foreign Office,A

Office of thb Reich Minister

Berlin, 10 August 1938

I was unable to comply with your repeated requests

to forward my proof of descent, for until the seizure of

power in Austria I was refrained by order of the Reichs-

fuehrer from requesting the documents there, and it was

therefore .impossible for me to produce all documents going

back to 1750. For this purpose, I would have to procure

a large part of the documents from Lower Styria, which was

ceded to Yugoslavia.

I can now inform you that I am in the possession of

all documents, including those pertaining to my great-

grandparents and that I am lacking only a few documents

relatingto my great-great grandparents. I expect to be

able to forward in a few months all required documents if

they arc*, available.

I also want to inform you that I am no longer em-

ployed at the Ribbentrop office and that I am now working/

as attaehe in the ministerial bureau of the Foreign Office.

However, I am still willing to forward the proof of descent,

for I I;lave to furnish it anyway as an SS-Fuehrer. You have

Page 14: NO. DISPATCH T ECSA-7o96o

been kind enough to give me time until 1 October, and I

hope that the accelerated work of the authorities will make

it possible for me to bring this matter to a close in the

desired manner. I also expect that the Yugoslav parishes

will realize the urgency of this matter.

•Personal record

Salzburg, 17 March 1943.

I was born on 11 February 1912 as the legitimate son

of university professor Dr. H. Spitzy and his wife Luise,

nee Martins. After graduating from the Schotten Gymnasium in

Vienna and passing the school certificate examination, I

entered the disguised pilot school of the Austrian Federal

Army in Graz-Thalerhof and obtained the customary papers

after a one-year training. In the fall of 1931, I was transferred

to the Officers' Academy in Ems, but I left the academy

voluntar4y in October of the same year, for, being an enthu-

siastic National Socialist, I did not want to stay any longer

in the clerically-conducted Feden=1 Army. I therefore re-

signed for reasons of health and immediately entered the SA

and a few months later the SS. I was already a party member

at that time. From 1928 to 1930, I was a member of the

Styrian national homeland protection. I studied aeronautics

and meteorology in 1932 and 1933. Standarte 11 under

Fitzthum was my SS unit. In 1933, I could no longer stay at

home, for my parents did not agree at all with my activities

for the party, and I therefore continued my studies in Berlin.

The constantly accelerating struggle at home left me no peace,

however, r abandoned my studies, transferred to the study of

Page 21: NO. DISPATCH T ECSA-7o96o

political science, went to Rome and worked from there for

the illegal NSDAP in Austria. I worked as go-between with

Habrecht and Rintelen in the preparation of the July Putsch

and had to flee to Italy after its failure. I continued my

political science studies at the College of Diplomacy in

Paris from 1934 to 1936 and graduated in 1936 with distinction.

From 1936 to 1939 I worked with Ribbentrop, ultimately as

his chief 'adjutant. I left the Foreign Office in January

1939 in order to honor a promise of marriage made to an

English girl who had been won over to National Socialism.

After training with the army and employment in an American

firm in co-operation with the Piergalores plan, I was ordered

at the outbreak of war as foreign specialist to the Supreme

Command of the army, where I remained until May 1941. After

several futile attempts, I finally was transferred to the

military forces. During a training maneuver, I was injured,

which resulted in a prolonged stay at the hospital and made

me unfit for service at the front. With the consent of the

chief of the S.D., I accepted in the summer of 1942 a position

with the Waffenunion in Spain and Portugal, which I still

occupy as an export specialist. Now that the war has shat-

tered my engagement with the English girl, I intend to marry

my excellent assistant Miss Maria von Poser-Schmidtmann.

To:

I request the granting of the engagement and marriage

approval loith

Miss Maria v. Poser-Schmidtmann

and am forwarding herewith the documents listed on the next

page.

For reasons cited below, I would like to carry out my

marriage not later thaa the end of April 1943. I therefore

request preferential handling of my request.

Resons:

I an, working for the S.D. abroad, and my stay and my

activity therefore depend on numerous circumstances. It is

very difficult for me to make plans on a long-term basis.

I cannot predict the place where I will be employed in

future. Miss Schmidtmann is employed at present as my

secretary,. It is quite undecided how and where we will be

able to marry at some future date.

Reinhard SpitzySS7HauptsturmfuehrerSS-No. 32 851Pg. *No. 612 629Address:SS. Sturmbannfuehrer Winzer, personallyMadrid, German Embassy

To:

Reichsfuehrer SSPrincipal Office of Racial Origin and Settlement

I intend to get engaged to Miss Maria von Poser-

SCHMIDTMANN and I would like you to send me the papers

required for engagement and marriage approval.

In view of the fact that my residence is in Madrid,

that I have to fulfill assignments there on behalf of the

SS, and that Miss Schmidtmann is employed at my office, it

will be difficult for me to come more than once

in connection with the marriage approval, and I

request as Much haste as possible and comradely

advice. Because of the war, I want to marry as

possible after the approval has been granted.

I am, a member of the SS since 1931 and

to Berlin

therefore

aid and

quickly as

was transferred

a month ago from the principal SS office to the principal

office of lipich security, where you can obtain information

about me from Standartenfuehrer Schellenberg.

My papers are in order, the ancestry proof was

Page 39: NO. DISPATCH T ECSA-7o96o

furnished in 1938 for SS-Fuehrer. I am in possession of the

sword of honor and of the skull-ring.

Miss Maria von Poser-SCHMIDTMANN was born as daughter

of Waldemar Schmidtmann and his wife Mary, nee Fortson on

20 April 1923 in Bronxville, New York, and has the following

characteristics according to her passport: Figure: tall,

oval face, blue eyes, dark-blond hair. She is a German ci-

tizen and was active as a Girl Scout leader in Salzburg at

the time of the reunification of Austria with the Reich.

After graduation, she fulfilled her obligation in the Reich

labor service, followed it up with employment in the war

auxiliaryoservice and obtained the Reich labor service pass-

port (RAD , home office Berlin, No. 276) with the evaluation of

excellent.

She was adopted with her two sisters in 1939 by her

childless uncle, long-time party member Major General Arno

von Poser und Gross-Raedlitz. Her two sisters, Mrs. Hilde-

gard von Breisky and Mrs. Florence Hoetzl are both married

to löng,time party members, the first with Legation Secretary

Dr. Hubert von Breisky, German Embassy in Lisbon (his en-

trance in the SS-Fuehrerkorps is imminent), and the second

with SS-Fuehrer Certified Engineer Ernst Hoetzl, architec-

tural adviser at the Todt Organization.

Page 40: NO. DISPATCH T ECSA-7o96o

It follows from the above that the granting of the

engagement and marriage approval is now a mere formality and,

considering the war and the fact that some of the maternal

ancestors of Miss Schmidtmann were born in the United States,

I beg to arrange all permissible facilitations and the speeding

of this matter. There is proof of Arianism, certified by the

kinship office in Vienna.

Heil Hitler!

•Foreign Office Berlin, 2 December 1938Bureau of the Reich Minister

Attache Reinhard SpitzyRe: Your letter of 2 November 1938.

I am forwarding herewith the now completed proof of

descent with officially-produced photostatic copies. The

original documents are in the possession of my father for

the purpose of further inquiries, including those for my

brother, who is also in the SS. It was not easy to get all

documents together, for my ancestors are all from Austria

or or from the part of Lower Styria that was ceded by the

peace treaty of St. Germain. An exception is only No. 16,

who comes from Venetia and settled at Marburg (South Styria).

It proved impossible to get a birth certificate concerning him,

for my personal investigations in San Vito revealed that the

parish registers dealing with the period prior to 1830 were

used by the soldiers as fuel during the Tagliamento battles

from 1914 to 1918.

The documents 17, 19, 20, 22, 23 24 and 25 had to be

procured from South Styria (lam/ Yugoslavial. I was unable to

carry out further incluiries at that time and had to be satis-

fied with the present result. I only know of 21 that she was

the legitimate daughter of a miller on the Raab (river in

Styria). No. 31 is from Vienna. Further inquiries about her

or her ancestors remained without result.

Page 42: NO. DISPATCH T ECSA-7o96o

•The W.B. placed behind several place-names signifies

Windische Bueheln and means that the place is located in the

vicinity of Marburg (South Styria).

A large part of the documents is issued in Slovenian,

for the parishes of ceded South Styria hare been strictly

ordered to issue the documents from now on only in Slovenian,

although they pertain in my case almost without exception to

ethnic German ancestors. The pastors even went to far in

some cases that they Slovenized German Christian or family

names. The Slovenian clergy of this region has carried out

this practice in many cases even in the prewar period, as

can be seen in old documents.

Among the documents are several made out in two

languages, either in German or Slovenian or in Latin and

Slovenian, which make it possible to read those made out

only in Slovenian by comparing them with the others, which,

in my opinion, makes a translation unnecessary.

I want to apologize for having surpassed the deadline

of 1 December by three days, but I hope that you will under-

stand the reason for this delay. As secretary of the Reich

Foreign Minister, I have to spend much time on official

journeys and was constantly en route especially during the

past few months, so that I could not accomplish more than I

did.

Page 43: NO. DISPATCH T ECSA-7o96o

I want to thank you in advance for your efforts.
