BUCKEYES SWEEP HUSKIES IN WCHA OPENEROhio State traveled to St. Cloud to open WCHA conference play Oct. 4-5. In the 5-2 victory over the Huskies, Emma Maltais scored a program-high four goals. She is the third Buckeye in school his-tory and the first since 2010 to do so.

Four different Buckeyes scored in the 6-2 win over St. Cloud in the series finale including first career goals from freshman Brooke Bink and sophomore Eve Savander. Tatum Skaggs and Sara Saekkinen both tallied two-goal games.

OPENING THE SEASON IN STYLEThe Buckeyes opened the 2019-20 season with a home sweep of St. Lawrence on Sept. 27-28. Sophie Jaques scored the first goal of the season and Paetyn Levis and Liz Schepers both added to the 4-1 total. Schepers tallied two goals and one assist in game one.

In the series finale freshman Teghan Inglis and sophomore Madison Bizal both scored their first career goals to lift the Buckeyes over the Saints, 3-2. The Buckeyes were trailing by one with a min-ute left to play but Bizal's goal gave Ohio State the momentum it needed to complete the sweep. Eight seconds later, Emma Maltais scored her first of the year and the game winning goal.

DEFENSIVE DOMINANCEThe Buckeyes have denied their opponents of ev-ery power play opportunity as the Scarlet and Gray is 10-10 on the penalty kill. On the offensive end, Ohio State is 2-9 on the power play. Jophie Jaques and Rebecca Freiburger have both scored in the man advantage situation for the Buckeyes.

O' CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN!The backbone of every great team is the group of leaders that set an example for the rest of the team, and the Buckeyes have put together a solid group for the new season. Jincy Dunne will remain a captain for the 2019-20 season while Olivia Soares moves into the captain role after serving as an assistant last season.

RETURNING OFFENSIVE FIREPOWEROhio State returns its top two goal scorers with juniors Tatum Skaggs and Emma Maltais. Between the two they recorded a third of the team's 2018-19 season goals. Maltais led the Buckeyes with 43 points and the league with 1.12 points per game. Jincy Dunne followed with 28 points and led the league in defenseman scoring with 0.77 PPG, while Skaggs tallied 26 points and sophomore Sophie Jaques picked up five goals and 16 assists for 21 points.

WCHA PRESEASON HONORSJunior forward Emma Maltais was voted WCHA Co-Player of the Year and both Maltais and redshirt senior Jincy Dunne received WCHA All-Team honors. Dunne was the only defense-man to receive a vote in the POY category while Maltais received two votes to split the honor with Wisconsin senior Abby Roque. Dunne was the league's only unanimous coaches' pick for All-Team honors after being named last season's WCHA Defenseman of the Year. Maltais picked up her first preseason All-Team honor after leading the Buckeyes last season with 43 points. Ohio State was selected third in the WCHA Preseason Coaches' Poll with 24 points behind Wisconsin (36) and Minnesota (31).

2018-19 HIGHLIGHTSEmma Maltais led the Buckeyes last season with 43 points from 28 assists and 15 goals, giving her a career high in points on her way to notching All-WCHA First Team status. Her 43 points tied the 11th highest total for a Buckeye in a single season, and she tied for 17th place in program history with 83 points. The 28 assists she tallied tied her for sixth place for assists in a single season. Maltais rattled off an eight-game point streak near the end of the season, tying her for the eighth longest point streak in a season for any Buckeye player. Maltais finished the season tied for third in the WCHA in points, but her 0.80 assists-per-game led the league.

Jincy Dunne, 2019 WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and All-WCHA First Team member, notched 28 points last season on 24 assists and four goals, tying her for the eighth highest point total by a Buckeye defenseman in a single season. Her 68 career points put her in 10th place among all OSU defensemen in program history.

Tatum Skaggs led the team with 17 goals and finished fourth on the season with 26 points. The junior enters the season with 63 points, from 40 goals and 23 assists, putting her four goals away from the being in the Top 10 in career goals at Ohio State.

Sophie Jaques put up impressive numbers in her rookie campaign on her way to earning WCHA All-Rookie Team honors. The rising sophomore fin-ished with 21 points from 16 assists and five goals.

Andrea Braendli made an immediate impact in her freshman year, notching a .939 save percentage, the fourth best in program history. Her 1.88 goals-against-average is tied for third place in the record book, as are her six shutouts. With 16 wins last season, Braendli notched the fifth highest win total for any Buckeye in a single season.

BUCKEYES RAKE IN 2018 HONORSJincy Dunne continues to build to her legacy, this time by earning ACHA All-American First Team honors, becoming the second player to earn First Team honors, and only the second Buckeye to be a two-time All-American (Tessa Bonhomme earned First Team honors in 2008, and second team in 2007). Dunne also became only the sec-ond Buckeye in program history to win the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year award. Last season she won back-to-back WCHA Defenseman of the Week awards in November, and then claimed the WCHA Defenseman of the Month award for November.

Goaltender Andrea Braendli notched back-to-back WCHA Goaltender of the Week honors in March as she followed up her award winning performance against Wisconsin with a stellar weekend against Minnesota State, only allowing two goals in the WCHA Tournament first round series. Her 28-save shutout performance against the Mavericks marked her sixth clean sheet for the season, good for second in the league. Her six shutouts tied her for the third-highest total for a Buckeye in a single season. Braendli was named National Goaltender of the Month in February for her .979 save percentage to lead the nation.

Jincy Dunne and Emma Maltais earned spots on the All-WCHA First Team for the second consecu-tive year, while Sophie Jaques snagged a spot on the WCHA All-Rookie Team on Feb. 28. This marked the first time where the same Buckeye players have both made the All-WCHA First Team in consecutive years.

A trio of Buckeyes brought home WCHA honors after sweeping Minnesota Duluth in November, with Tatum Skaggs earning WCHA Forward of the Week, Andrea Braendli winning WCHA Rookie of the Week and Jincy Dunne notching a consecu-tive WCHA Defensemen of the Week award.

Fresh off being named the WCHA Forward of the Month for October, Emma Maltais kept things rolling with a WCHA Forward of the Week award on Nov. 6.

HEAD COACH NADINE MUZERALL

After three years at the helm for the Buckeyes, Muzerall has a .572 winning percentage, good for the third highest among current WCHA coaches.

With the success on the ice last season numer-ous Buckeyes earned individual honors, head-lined by Jincy Dunne earning WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and All-American First Team honors. Including Dunne, seven Buckeyes earned WCHA individual honors with goalten-der Andrea Braendli leading the pack with 8 conference nods.

Muzerall led the Buckeyes to new heights in just her second year as head coach, making the NCAA tournament and NCAA Frozen Four for the first time in program history. Along the way, the Buckeyes set new program records for wins (24) and WCHA wins (14), while posting an 11-5-1 record against top-10 ranked teams. Thanks to her efforts on the bench, Muzerall earned the first WCHA Coach of the Year award in program history.

Off the ice, 20 student-athletes have achieved WCHA All-Academic Team honors while an additional 12 have been named OSU Scholar-Athletes. Five current players are WCHA Scholar-Athletes including senior Rebecca Freiburger who is the only player to receive consecutive nominations.

Muzerall coached Canada’s U22 National Team in a three-game series against the USA U22 Team in August, and at the 2017 Nations Cup. In 2016 she was an assistant coach for a three-game series against the United States that took place in Calgary (during which Canada took two of the three games), and she has served as a camp coach at Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp. Back in July of 2016 she was named to the coaching staff for Canada’s National Women’s Development Team.

A two-time All-American and two-time national champion as a player at Minnesota, Muzerall spent five years behind the bench as an assistant coach with the Golden Gophers. The first women’s hockey player to be inducted into her university’s hall of fame, she helped guide her former team to four national championships and five-consecutive spots in the title game. During her tenure she coached five Olympians (Mira Jalosuo, Megan Bozek, Amanda Kessel, Anne Schleper, and Lee Stecklein), none of whom had made Olympic rosters prior to Muzerall’s arrival.

While serving as a member of the Golden Gophers staff, Muzerall’s teams accrued a record of 182-14-8, including a perfect 41-0-0 record during the 2012-13 season. 13 Minnesota team records are held by squads the she either coached or played for.

Prior to her return to Minneapolis, Muzerall made a couple significant career stops. She spent two sea-sons playing for Hockey Club Lugano in Switzerland, skating on the first line and leading her team in both points and goals. During her tenure, the team won a Swiss National Championship and advanced to the European Cup, where they won a bronze medal.
