During Week Three we were very fortunate to have the NET (National Evangelisation Team) here at St

Mary’s to run Retreat days with each of the Year levels form 7 -11. A more detailed report is elsewhere in

the newsletter but from all accounts it was a day enjoyed by all.

NAPLAN has also been and gone for another year and I thank all

staff and students for the calm and efficient way that these tests

were undertaken. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is just a

“snapshot” of the students’ performance on that particular day

and is not always a correct indicator of their true talents and abili-

ties.

Genazzano visitors will be with us again next week. This is a

fabulous opportunity for our girls to meet and socialise with the

Genazzano girls from Melbourne. This exchange program has been

happening between the two colleges for more than 20 years and

it is fantastic that we are able to carry this tradition on. Our girls will be in Melbourne on exchange early in

Term Three.

EXAMS!

Exam week is Week 7, June 2 – 5. All Senior students have been issued with an exam schedule earlier this

week. Some students may not have any exams during this time, but they may be required to be at school if

they have outstanding work in any of their subjects. Year 11 and 12 students are only required to be at

school when they have a scheduled exam. A study room will be available, should students wish to be at

school.

STUDY SESSIONS

In preparation for exam week, the College is conducting some evening student sessions for Year 11 and 12

students. Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 5.30 till 7.30 in the Library. Teaching staff will be on hand

to assist in particular subject areas. Students have been given a letter outlining the details. We look forward

to seeing many students take advantage of this amazing opportunity.

will be proud to fly them at our public events. Today at our Feast Day Mass it was an exciting time as we

launched the crests. Congratulations to the following students whose designs were chosen ; Tehya Ja-

mieson- Barbier House, Abbey Ford- Rice House, Yasmin Cypher – O’Brien House and Madeleine Christie-

Ward House.

Choir

Tania McKenna, parent and Director of Broome Academy of Music will commence work with our St Mary’s

College Choir each Wednesday after school in the Primary music room. Tania is a professional singer and a

vocal specialist who has travelled with the Australian Girls Choir and has worked in the music industry for

twenty four years. Further information for this exciting initiative will be coming home with students in the

near future.

Holidays

Finally, as you know, I will be away taking part of my long service leave for the rest of this term. Thank you to

parents and guardians for your support during the term, and thank you to all teachers and administrative

and support staff for all that you do for our students every single day! I look forward to return in Term 3

and wish you all a safe and happy holiday period.

Sacrament of Holy Communion

Last weekend we celebrated a commitment mass with our candidates for their sacrament of Holy

Communion Mass. It was very well attended and was a special time for families to share the importance of

the Eucharist with their children. We are now looking forward to our Sacrament of Holy Communion Retreat

Day on 19th June and our Mass on Sunday 21st June.

Learning Journey

We were blown away by the amazing Learning Journey evening we had

this week. To see so many parents at school enjoying their children’s learning

and our café in the Undercover Area was fabulous. Thank you to families for

supporting this event, it was such a lovely evening.

NAPLAN

Last week our students in Year Three and Year Five participated in the

NAPLAN assessment. We were so proud with the way that our students

engaged during these snapshots of their learning. We look forward to

reviewing their results and using this information to further support their learning and our whole school

planning.

ASIST Training

This week our Aboriginal Teaching Assistants were given the opportunity to attend a Suicide Prevention

Workshop facilitated by Anglicare. It was a wonderful opportunity to increase awareness, understanding

and confidence in dealing with this difficult issue within our community. We are so pleased that we can

support our staff with this important learning.

Social and Emotional Program

Starting next week we have our Girls Power and Good Guys Friendology program being trialed with all Year

Three and Year Five students. This program is designed to build and maintain strong friendships and how to

feel confident in who they are. These sessions will be facilitated by our Social Worker, Melita and our

Wellbeing Teacher, Michelle alongside classroom teaching teams. Letters have gone home to families with

students in these year levels.

Enrichment

Last week our Enrichment group for students commenced once again on Primary. Mr Molyneux and Miss

Josie have been working hard to prepare and plan for this

group of students to ensure the opportunities are meaningful for

our group. They have started off with such a bang and we are

super excited about where their learning will take them!

Cross Country

On Wednesday our Interschool Cross Country Team came an

incredibly close second. We are so proud of their commitment

to training and on the day! What a fabulous effort. A huge

thanks to Mr Ed, Mr Joseph and Mr Tim who supported the

students with their training and racing.

The National Evangelization Team (N.E.T.)

As part of the schools commitment to religious education, St.

Mary's College hosted the services of a team from NET Ministries

in early May. NET Ministries is a Catholic youth ministry that has

been operating in Australia since 1989. The team of 9 young

adults from NET Ministries are from various parts of the world in-

cluding America and Canada. These young people volunteer a

year to facilitate retreats for students from over 150 schools

across Australia. During this week they conducted retreats for all

students from year 7 - 11. The feedback from the students was

once more overwhelming positive as evidenced from the com-

ments below:

“I really liked how they told their own stories on how they found

happiness. I was inspired by their work and I hope this tradition

of inviting the NET team to St. Mary’s College continues.”

“It was a really great time with the NET team. They made me

feel joyful and I can’t wait till next year when they come again.”

“I prayed to God that I would be closer to Him and I promised

to make religion a larger part of my life.”

“We talked about God and Jesus and prayer time. We talked

about peer pressure and we wrote a letter to Jesus. I found that very helpful because it got my

thoughts down on paper.”

“At the end of the day, we had time to reflect. This was our thinking time and it brought us

closer to God through my faith and finding my true self.”

Gym and Tonic

Gym and Tonic was a solo drama piece that

explored the different identities found in a gym

class. Roz Hammond created the piece as a part of

the Fringe Festival in Perth and it is now touring

Country WA. Drama students Grace Cuzens and

Alicia Gould took the time out of

their Wednesday night to enjoy this entertaining

performance at the Broome Civic Centre. The girls

loved analysing her characterisation techniques

and ability to take on different roles. Good work,

girls!

Year 12 Drama Assessments

Over the last month Alicia Gould and Grace Cuzens have gone

through what they describe as the torturous process of designing

and creating a diorama for the representational play Hotel Sorrento

by Hannie Rayson. Alicia and Grace have each designed a set

model that has brought to life their design vision for the living room of

the family that the play is built on. The research and design process

for this task was extensive. Alicia uses the colours ‘hunter green’ and

‘pale pink’ alongside the use of handmade silk flowers and pin-

ewood features; all of which were prominent in the 1990s. Grace al-

so incorporates the furniture trends of the 1990s in her set by hand

stitching an overstuffed ‘cobalt blue’ couch and bringing ‘the out-

side, inside’ with the inclusion of a pot plant in the living room. They

should both be enormously proud of their finished product and the

dedication that they have shown to this subject.

Primary House Cross Country………...and the winners are WARD The 2015 Primary House Cross Country Carnival was held on Friday May 8th at the Primary Cam-

pus. We are lucky enough to have a challenging bush track that makes its way around the pe-

rimeter of the school and then through onto the oval. Students had been preparing for this

event during their P.E. classes and also at before school training at Cable Beach. As usual Kin-

dy started off the day in fine style and it was inspiring to see the younger students with such big

smiles on their faces as they ran the track. It is great to see all of the students lift their perfor-

mance on the day thanks to the carnival atmosphere provided by the spectators, as well as

the grandstand setup of the finish line and the course. A huge thank you to all of the parents

and friends who attended to support the students and a special thank you to the Grounds and

Maintenance team Ralph and Murray for setting up the event. All of the students should be ex-

tremely proud of their efforts and I wish all of the Interschool team the very best for the upcom-

ing Carnival on May 20th. Ward dominated the 2015 Inter House Cross Country Carnival from

the outset and ran away with the victory comfortably. Congratulations to the medal winners
