COMING SOON

We are currently in the process of building and adding to a new section on the College website ‘Senior Schooling’. We hope to have this ready by the end of this week so that over the holiday period you may find it useful to access this information which will include a link to a fabulous resource: myfutures which will allow your child to explore their personal strengths and interests and then relates these to possible work and career options. ATTENDANCE MATTERS

Regular school attendance is critical to student learning and well-being. It is a core rule in our public schools that all students ‘attend school every school day, unless they are legally excused, and be in class on time and prepared to learn.' Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic and social/emotional success starting as early as kindergarten and continuing through to secondary school.

Parents/caregivers play a key role in making sure students get to school – we realise some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. However, we also know that when students miss too much school— regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically and can often have a social impact. A student is less likely to succeed if he or she is chronically absent—which means missing 18 or more days over the course of an entire school year.

What does the research say?

• By Year 6, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at risk of not completing secondary schooling (graduating). With data predicting that the higher the absence rate the earlier they will exit the school system.

• By the end of Year 9 good attendance can predict graduation rates even better than grades on their school report, NAPLAN results or any other test scores.

• Students who have good attendance at school are far more likely to be not only more successful at school but in life generally.

As a parent/caregiver the best things you can do is:

• Ensure your adolescent child is getting enough sleep and is not constantly wired into either gaming or social media, especially later in the evening.

• Hold a firm stance regarding the importance of being at school. Adolescents can be supreme masters in wearing down a parent’s resilience at times! Hold strong in the knowledge that every day at school does matter.

• Plan family vacations to occur exclusively in the school holiday periods • Organise wherever possible for appointments to occur out of school hours

Yours sincerely

Dale Beaton Principal

MESSAGE FROM KINROSS PRIMARY

Kinross Primary School would like to ask parents to remind all Kinross College students to walk around the perimeter of Kinross Primary School unless dropping their siblings at class.

UNIFORM Please remember: only Kinross College uniform items, as purchased from the College uniform supplier, are allowed at the College. The same message is applicable to those students wearing non-uniform shorts. We will continue to push the standard of dress, as requested by parents, and we appreciate your assistance and support in this matter. Students found wearing non-uniform items of clothing will be referred to Student Services and/or an Associate Principal. Contact home will be made either by phone, email or letter. Any family experiencing hardship can make contact with the College to discuss.

Tuesday 16 May during Sessions 4 and 5: Kinross College has booked Jade and Tristan Lewis to present the ‘Just Say No’ program to all our Year 9 students. youth about the real dangers and consequences of drug use and then equipping them with alternative ways to live a drug free, fulfilled and motivated life in a world full of temptations.

The main features of the program include educating students in understanding the drug and alcohol culture, learning the 3 stages of addictions and being aware of how quickly the stages progress. Motivating the students to make positive choices, especially in the face of peer pressure. Students will be presented with the truthful and honest facts about drugs and alcohol and be equipped with practical ways to say no to risk taking situations. Specific skills covered will include equipping students with a personal self-analysis system to determine if they are at risk.

This is a fresh message of hope to young people who are seeing an increasing rate of drug experimentation, addiction, crime and violence. Students will view this presentation in their Mentor Groups. To date the Just Say No message has been presented to over 100,000 school students across Australia.

COMMUNICATIONS HOME - IMPORTANT

As you will be aware, general College news and information is currently emailed home and sent via ‘tiqbiz’ notifications. As of Term 2 we will no longer be sending the general news by email – we will only use tiqbiz. Parents have given very positive feedback in regard to tiqbiz and now feel better informed about what is happening at College than ever before. Please see instructions on how to register below. E bulletins and some general news will be posted onto the College website under the News’ tab.

You may or may not be aware that Teaching staff at the College use a separate system to communicate directly with parents either on an individual basis or to class/year groups. This is delivered by email and could be relating to academic performance, assignment submission, social and emotional welfare or anything else that a teacher may need to communicate to you about your child.

Now that the College has moved to sending school reports home via email, it’s so important to ensure you receive and check email from the College.

To ensure you are receiving all important communications from the College please: Ensure the ‘@education.wa.edu.au’ domain is marked as a safe sender. (So that mail does not end up in

your junk inbox). Register with tiqbiz – as of Term 2 we will no longer be sending the general news by email as well as
