The Pattishall & District Produce ShowSunday 14th September 2014The kinder weather has seen many of us out in our gardens and even a few BBQ’shave reappeared to welcome the onset of spring. Hopefully seed beds are beingsown and borders planted with an array of plants some of which we hope will maketheir way to The Produce Show to be held in the Parish Hall on the second Sundayin September.
The return of The Produce Show has been warmly received and many folk joined usfor the Launch Night at The EastcoteArms on March 14th, supported by ourhosts Greg and Janey, who along withJeff Shrimpton kindly provided raffleprizes. Committee members had alsodonated goodies for a luxury hamperwhich was won by Jon Wood who wasdelighted to win as that day was hisbirthday! We will be holding our first AGMat The Eastcote Arms on St GeorgesDay, April 23rd at 8.00pm All welcome themore the merrier the event will be.
In the previous edition of Around Pattishall the plant, flower, fruit and vegetablesections were published whereas this edition focuses on the handicraft, egg, foodand drink classes. From tabards to tarts and cookies to clay we hope that there willbe something for everyone, including a baking class for men only!
COOKERY4 Individual Astcote Cheesecakes based on the ideas of the TowcesterCheesecake. The idea travelled from Yorkshire before the War and was made inwhat is now the Pickled Pig when it was a bakery. The original recipe is a secretbut is based loosely on the Yorkshire Curd Cake. Any of your own additionswould be fine.Miniature Decorated Celebration Cake e.g. birthday, wedding, retirement. 2tier, 7” base sponge cake with homemade edible decorations.Any Cake Using Vegetables e.g. beetroot, carrot, courgette, pumpkin, rhubarb,parsnip.Northampton Seed Cake, an old recipe eaten at shearing time!
Ingredients: 8 ounces butter, 8 ounces caster, 4 eggs, 8 ounces flour, ½tsp baking powder, 1 tsp ground nutmeg, 1 ounce caraway seeds. Oven180C / mark 4

Method: Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Place eggs in bowl setover saucepan of hot water, whisk till fluffy then whisk into butter mixture.Sift flour and baking powder together, add nutmeg and fold into mixture. Addcaraway seed and combine. Turn into greased and lined 8” round tin,smooth over top. Bake for 1 ½ hours covering top with foil if browning tooquickly. Cool in tin for 5 mins then turn out on wire rack.

Pattishall Annual Spring CleanA big thank you to those who helped with theannual Spring Clean on 22nd of March. Wecovered most of the roads in the Parish aswell as some of the A5. Over 40 bags of litterand rubbish were collected and deposited inthe village hall car park for removal onMonday 24th. As well as the usual takeawaycartons and cans there were road signs andbuilders rubbish. Some people cleared theirsections on days before the event.

WW1 CommemorationsAre there any people living in the parish who are related to men who lost their livesduring W.W.1 and also related to those who are commemorated on the memorialtablet in Holy Cross Church. If so we would like to hear from you as we are hopingto gather in more information to mount a small exhibition which will take place lateron in the year.

Pattishall Parish HallPattishall Playing Field
The Annual General Meetings for the Parish Hall Association and the Playing FieldAssociation will take place on Thursday 1st May starting at 7.00 pm in the SmallHall at Pattishall Parish Hall. All Pattishall parish residents are invited and will bevery welcome. Please come along and find out about the work being done by thecommittee on your behalf. New committee members are always welcome as arehelpers. So if you would like to assist in maintaining our community centre, in anycapacity, please do come along.
The hall was opened for afternoon tea & cakes on the 6th April. Over 50 peoplecame along to see the recent refurbishments as well as find out about future eventsincluding the Picnic in the Park music event on 12th July (see p18) and the return ofthe Produce Show on the 14th September (see p2).
Thank you to all those to baked cakes, served teas or attended the event! A total of£305 was raised for the Parish Hall.

We have set up an email loop to keep residents informed. If you would like to joinplease contact your street warden, or the coordinator (below). If you are already inthe loop and change your email address please remember to let your street wardenor the Coordinator know!

Pattishall WIOur May meeting will be the annual discussion on this year’s resolution “increasingorgan donation”, where we decide which way we wish to vote.
June is Members Evening, always a surprise, usually involving an outing. Last yearwe went to Canons Ashby to hear a very interesting talk by the Head Gardener.This year - who knows!!
Also in June we are planning a Ladies Pamper Evening to be held in the SchoolHall, June 18th, 7pm to 10pm, admission £3, to include a glass of wine and a raffleticket. Various treatments will be available e.g. manicure, facials, massage etc.Also stalls selling scarves, jewellery, make-up etc. Do come along, it should be fun.

Tribute to Brenda Campion27 March 1926 - 17 January 2014
Brenda Campion died peacefully at Northampton General Hospital earlier this yearafter a short illness. She was the younger of two girls born to the late PhilipCampion MBE and Vera Kate nee Collins in Grimscote and attended the ColdHigham School and the Northampton School for Girls.
She remembered with nostalgia the Guide Camps of 1939 led by Kath Morse, thecamp fire at dusk inspiring a lifelong joy of poetry, love of family and friends, and astrong Christian faith.
In 1942 she completed her Apothecaries Hall Certificate as a Dispenser remarkingin her life story how she loved the brass moulds, scales and weights, the shelves tothe ceiling containing beetles, roots, bark and leaves which formed the basis ofapothecaries remedies. She was always proud to serve as a Wren during theSecond World War and this led to her meeting and eventually marrying WilliamStrang in Chile in 1948. The next twenty years were to see married life taking her toBirmingham, Buenos Aires and Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, these were to be the birthplaces of each of her three children, Nigel, Timothy and Nicola. Brenda inspiredothers to share their faith and her love of the English language, returning to Chile inthe 1980s to join two of her children there. She discovered her exceptional talentsas a teacher of English as a foreign language spending several years in El Soldadoin the north of Chile. El Soldado is an open-cut copper mine producing 50,000tonnes of fine copper a year. Brenda taught many of the senior managers therewhile enjoying the breathtaking splendours of the desert flowers on her walks in theregion.
She was proud of her four grandchildren, Abigail and Philip who were born in Chile,and Kirran and Lizzie born in the UK. She followed the footsteps of her Great AuntBee to Kashmir and climbed to the base camp of Mount Everest. Alone onChocolate Hill, Gallipoli she touched on the traumas of the First World Wardescribed so clearly in her father Philip Campion’s memoirs with which she wasentrusted. Her book collection provided her with many years of enjoyable hours ofadventure as she journeyed through the writings of others. She has passed theseon with her life stories and those of her family to her children. She focused her life’swork on loving her family dearly, on helping friends and being a caring steward offamily treasures, the family tree and history. She enjoyed a faith that matured andenabled those she loved to discover their own. She committed her life tostrengthening those around her and leaves behind many a grateful heart.

Diocesan Celebration of MinistrySaturday, 7th June 11am Peterborough Cathedral – Diocesan Celebration ofMinistry. “Bishop Donald and Bishop John request the pleasure of the company ofthe clergy, PCC and congregation of the four churches in the benefice: St Luke’s, StMary’s, Holy Cross and St John the Baptist for a celebration of the work of both menand women clergy”. This is to mark the 20th anniversary of the first ordination ofwomen to the ordained ministry but it is to celebrate and give thanks for all ordainedministry – both male and female. Pattishall Good Neighbours ClubIt is hard to believe that we are a third of the way into the year and during that timewe have been very active. Unfortunately several members have been or are inhospital and we wish them a speedy recovery and hope they will be with us joiningin our forthcoming activities.
February‘s visiting speaker was one of our own parishioners, Gail Stuart whocaptured our full attention for over an hour telling us about life with her father EricMorecambe. Our numbers on this occasion were doubled, having so many visitorsjoining us for this most memorable afternoon.
In March John & Cathy Barker, two of our members, provided us with an afternoonof entertainment, Cathy singing and John accompanying her on the keyboard orwith his violin. Thank you both.
In April we had a much-awaited return visit by the Towcester Choral Society. It reallywas a delight to have them singing for us again so beautifully.
In May we have Sue Pace who some of you will remember as practice nurse atBugbrooke telling us about her voluntary work raising funds and the provision ofschools in Tanzania.
June takes us out on the first of our day trips to Lichfield and on to the NationalArboretum and War Memorials where we shall be given a tour and have tea beforeour return home.
All in all we are having a very enjoyable time and if you are aged fifty or over andhave the time we shall be pleased for you to join us.

Gardening ClubThe next meeting of the Gardening Club will be held on 7th
May in the Parish Hall at 7.30pm when Michael Brown, anRHS speaker from Northampton, will tell us what gardenswere like in the Age of Chivalry. Ann Bird, who was
unfortunately unable to come to our meeting in March to talk about The World ofRoses, has kindly agreed to speak to us on 7th June so we will be having a Junemeeting.
Our trip this year is going to be on 2nd July when we will visit the gardens ofRousham House (www.rousham.org) which is situated about 12 miles north ofOxford. Further details to follow.

Mums and Tots is the local get together for Mums and carers of children fromnewborn to school age. We meet at Pattishall Parish Hall on Wednesday afternoonsfrom 1.30 to 3pm. There are lots of toys and ride-ons, space to play, a quiet areaand toys for the tiny tots. We have a different craft every week and Mums can enjoya coffee and cake while the little ones play and enjoy a juice and a biscuit too.
We are very pleased to announce our new music session which takes place everysecond Wednesday of the month. There are instruments and nursery rhymes andgreat fun for Children and parents alike.
Come along and make friends while the little ones have fun. Its just £2 for the firstchild and 50p for siblings. Come and give it a try, we look forward to welcoming you.

Bus ServiceThe new North Gate Bus Station in Northampton is now open. Ournumber 87 bus arrives and departs from Stand 16 on the Market
Square side of the Drapery. There are still some teething problems to be sorted out.It is hoped that a waiting room will be provided in one of the shop units on theDrapery. The pedestrian crossing in the Drapery outside the Nat West Bank isgoing to be removed, and the one at the bottom outside McDonalds will be made'push button' to help improve the flow of traffic.
