The charges against Cano, 18 years of age at the time, resulted from a March 11, 2011 report lodged by Neil Percy Blackburn, 74, retired Canadian businessman residing in the same village. Blackburn reported that between 2:00p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on the material date, someone broke into his house while he was not at home and stole his Mac Book Pro laptop computer along with his 12 gauge shotgun and cartridges. Police investigation led to the prompt arrest of Arsenio Cano who, upon being questioned, led the police to an area in the village where, about a foot off the side of the road, h e pointed out a spot from where the police retrieved the gun. After taking possession of the shot gun, Cano was transported to the San Ignacio police station where he was kept overnight. He was further questioned the following day and again led police to an area on the bank of the Belize Old River where the police found a black plastic bag containing a Mac Book Pro laptop computer and five 12 gauge cartridges. He was found dead on Sunday, post-mortemed on Monday, waked on Tuesday and buried on Wednesday. It was shortly after 1:00 pm on Sunday, May 13, 2012 when Ron Vasquez who is adopted into the family, arrived at the Thompson house where he found “Uncle Marco’s” nude, lifeless body, face upward in a pool of blood in the living room with stab wounds to the right side of the neck. Investigations revealed that 24 hours earlier, the deceased took his mother, in a cab, to the bus terminal in San Ignacio as she was travelling to Belize City to spend the weekend with a daughter in preparation for the Monday trip to the USA. At around 6:30 on Saturday evening, the deceased and three male acquaintances travelled to “the last bar” in Bullet Tree where they drank some beers. It was shortly after 8:00 pm when the group left the village and returned to San Ignacio Town ending up at a popular night club on Hudson Street where they had more beers. Something reportedly went wrong inside the nightclub resulting in the deceased leaving at around 1:30 that Sunday morning. The other three males stayed until the club closed at 4:00 am after which they reportedly walked to Thompson’s house. One of them knocked on the front door which was opened for them by the deceased. It’s Thursday night and at the time of writing, the “Circo De LosHernamos Ponce” is pulling off the final act in a straight seven nightseries. These observations could probably be attributed to advancing in agebut after attending the circus on one of those seven nights, I justsimply did not get any thrill from sitting through the 90 minutes ofwhat the circus offered. While it can be said that ours is an entertainment starvedcommunity, this thing coming to town, now for at least a third time, disguised as a circus, is a far cry from what we knew a circus to bewhen we were children. We took our child to the circus hoping that he would get the thrill ofseeing performers walking the tight rope, eating and spitting out fire, throwing knives at a spinning board with a human being attached to it,sawing a person in half in a casket, seeing a person “disappearing”right before our eyes, flying from the high trapeeze, riding a bicycleforward and backwards on a high tight rope while balancing a long barwith a person hanging from each end, seeing an elephant, a giraffe, alion, a hippo, a bear and other such animals alien to us, seeing a realentertaining clown show etc. This one came here with nothing of the sort. Apart from an oldcamel, a llama and 4 tigers, this one came with a cow, four “maga”horses and disney characters clad in dirty costumes. What next, will they return in a few months time with cats, dogs, chicken, ducks and sheep. These are animals we see everyday. Ourchildren want new experiences. We are consumers of entertainment and so the consumerprotection agency must not allow these imposters to dupe us withthis kind of mediocre product. The reality is that they came, they “ketched” and they killed us thistime. After experiencing the rip off, very, very few are those amongus who would return for a second dose of the substandard productthey sell. It’s like the old adage tells us: “swindle me once, shameon you. Swindle me twice, shame on me”. As a community, we must not let these imposters take advantage ofus. They might swindle one set of us on their first night after whichthe word must go around and their big tent must remain empty forevery night they remain thereafter. As sure as day follows night, theywill get the sense and realize that they cannot come to this town withsuch crap to sell to the intelligent people of this community. Thelonger we accommodate them and turn a blind eye, the more theywill take advantage of us. They have already pulled off this one on us. They need municipalapproval to pitch their big tent. Yes we know that they pay themunicipality to conduct their business here. We voted for politicalleaders to safeguard our interest. In an ideal society, the interest ofthe community supersedes all other considerations. We thereforesuggest that while Los Hermanos Ponce are folding their tents andcorralling their “maga” animals, they are to be visited by localpolitical leaders who, without mincing words, should read them theriot act, let them know that never again will they be allowed to pulloff this kind of act on the Belizean People or stay the hell out of thistown.

Sacred Heart College - Remembers A Deceased Teacher

Marco David Thompson. Marco.Dave. Marco Dave (which is whatI called him) and even MarcoPolo (I saw that on some of thememorial posters our studentsmade.) These are all names we knewhim as at Sacred Heart College(SHC). On the SHC Facebook page, andon posters remembering him, studentsdescribe him as being a great teacher,a good listener, and kind. For many

of us, he was not only a colleague buthe was a brother, a beloved friend. The daughter of a teacher called himTio Marco. You see, when peoplehave worked together for as long asmany of our SHC staff membershave, we become a family. This is especially true for many ofour faculty, past and present, withwhom Marco played softball on theSavannah as children, journeyedthrough “College”, and then grewtogether into some of the finestteachers in this country. And as such,Mr. Thompson, English teacher, became Marco or Dave or MarcoPolo, friend and brother, and for ourchildren he took on the role of abeloved uncle. In his June 23, 1986 letter ofapplication to the College, Marcoexpressed his confidence that hewould do a good job of teachingScience, History, English andCommunication. He also willinglyoffered his services in other areas suchas moderating the Student Counciland coaching volleyball and softball. Marco joined the faculty of SHC inAugust of that year, left for a threeyear period to pursue studies in theUSA, returned in 1993, and then leftin 2001 for a period of 7 years, before returning in 2008. While hewas away from SHC he worked atan alternative school in the district, and

served as an adult educator at theprison, and then as a counselor there. In his 2008 letter of application torejoin the SHC team, he reaffirmedhis commitment and respect for SHC.Upon my appointment as Principaland President, I was glad to learn thathe was rejoining the SHC faculty/family. After all, I, too, first joinedSHC in 1986 – with Marco, andtaught alongside him in the EnglishDepartment before leaving in 1990 forthe University of Belize. I knew himwell, had kept abreast with hisgrowth, and knew what he could do.As his friend, as his colleague, as hisPrincipal, I have never doubted hiscommitment and ability to serve SHC,nor his love for the institution and all itrepresents. Even when he left, I sensed he wasstill serving SHC, and in fact, in hisapplication to return he noted that theexperiences he garnered in the 8 yearshe was away from the College, would, in his words, “allow him toresume dedicated and improvedservice to SHC.” Over the years, Mr. Thompsonserved SHC as an English teacher,Home Room teacher, Softball Coach,Counselor, and member of theBoard as the Faculty and StaffRepresentative, and even briefly asBursar. But these are just labels thatdo not really speak to the quality ofservice he gave.Like his dedication. His passion for his work.Hisinfectious enthusiasm. The fact that he was so concernedabout his first form children’s readingproficiency that he developedremedial programs to address theproblems. The fact that he constantlyexplored ways to improve histeaching and introduce new strategiesand material in the English classroom. The fact that he had a keen sense ofhis students’ abilities and worriedwhen they weren’t doing theirbest – and encouraged themconstantly. The fact that he honed hiscounseling skills to address the myriadissues and problems affecting the livesof our students. The fact that he wasa good listener and that he cared

about his students and worried abouthow our deteriorating social fabricaffects their lives. The fact that heoften bought meals for some childrenwho had none. None of these qualities were missedby his students, and many parents alsorecognized them- so much they oftenwent to his home to discuss theirchildren’s progress and problems withhim, seeking his advice. A parentcalled to offer sympathy to theCollege community and remarkedthat “Mr. Marco” as she called himwas able to help her son develop thediscipline he needed. On Monday ina staff counseling session, I heard thisechoed by many of our colleagues. I recently had a discussion with himregarding his career pathway, and washappy to learn that he was thinking ofpursuing a full career in Counseling(though I would miss him as anEnglish teacher). This would havemeant that he would have to go backto school, but I knew that would notdeter him. He wanted to help people– students – surmount some of the illsin their lives — he liked helping people– he liked helping them developcoping strategies. And he was goodat doing this. Many of us at SHCknow only too well how much timehe invested in counseling at risk youth, both at the High School and theJunior College and, I know he alsohelped his colleagues. He had a knackof sensing when you needed ashoulder to cry on, or an ear willingto just listen. I believe he graduallyrealized that helping others was his truecalling, as much as he loved teaching. It takes a very, very special person towant to live a life of giving of himselfto others in their most critical andpainful moments, and he was special. We will remember Marco for hisjoviality, for his caring, for hisconcern for our well-being for hisready smile and hearty laugh, for hisquick-wit, his willingness to listen. Hisgenerous spirit. Marco, Dave, we are going to missyou, my brother. You have left theworld a better place –you havetouched the lives of hundreds ofstudents over the many years of yourservice at SHC, and you will liveforever in our hearts. We grieve yourpassing but we are comforted by thewords of St. Paul in 1 Thessalonians4:14 “We believe that Jesus diedand rose again and so we believethat God will bring with Jesusthose who have fallen asleep inhim.” And, we will pray for peace inthis land, and we will “step up” ourefforts to teach peace to our students.Ms. Mom, Ron, and all of Marco’sbrothers and sisters and his extendedfamily, all his friends who knewand loved him, on behalf of hisSHC family, I extend our sincerecondolences. We share your pain.

SANTA ELENA TOWN, Cayo,Friday, May 4 2012: “Sharpen the saw!” Have youever heard that phrase before? Itis what farmers and woodcuttersdo in order for their job to beeasier and more effective. On May 4 and 5, 2012, theteachers of Santa Elena R.C.Primary School, went to“Sharpen their saws” in orderto make children’s learningeasier, funny and more effective;by attending an extraordinaryworkshop hosted by BelizeTeacher Leadership Project,Belize Elementary and BelizeHigh School. The workshop was based on theM.O.R.E. APPROACH, whichis Multiple Options for Resultsin Education. The main purposeof the workshop was, asmentioned earlier, to sharpen thesaw, to develop the OlympicMentality, where the best keepsgetting better:, to acceleratelearning in a brain friendlyenvironment, to be aware of theseven components of theM.O.R.E. Model and how toappreciate the uniqueness of eachlearner. Dr. Joyce Swarzman, author of

the book, “It’s All about Kids”;was the facilitators of theworkshop. Both Dr. Joyce andDr. Morrow are partnering withSanta Elena Primary School so asto develop a model schooladopting the M.O.R.E.Approach.Dr. Joyce is a very dynamicpresenter. The time felt shorterwhile at the workshop during thetwo days. The activities done andthe stories told, made it difficultfor any of the teachers present totake any vacation. Everything wasso spectacular, engaging andinformative. At the workshop we werepointed out the three types ofvacations that every humanbeing takes, even the richest ofthe rich, when they are in aclassroom or when listening to a

On Their Journey To Explore M.O.R.E

speech. Even though thesevacations are “as natural as thesunrise and the sunset”,teachers need to find all sorts offun activities to minimize thesevacations and increase students

appreciate the uniqueness of thelearner I need to identify the typeof personality they have. Thethree main personalities are:KTVA (Kinesthetic, Tactile,Auditory and Visual), GASC(the Global, the Abstract, theSequential and the Concretelearner) and the DEAR (theDriver, the Expressive, the Ana-lytical and the Relater). I learntthat we are wired on this earth forconflict. Therefore, conflict isnot the problem; it is how we dealwith the problem. Knowledge ofthese types of people equips theteachers in understanding eachstudent and knowing how to dealwith the different behaviors that theydemonstrate in our classrooms.

Some Things Might Just Be Too Good To Be True Newly wed Anthony takes hislovely wife to play her first gameof golf. Of course, the wifepromptly hacked her first shotright through the window of thebiggest house adjacent to thecourse. Anthony cringed, “I warnedyou to be careful! Now we’llhave to go up there, find theowner, apologize and seehow much your lousy drive isgoing to cost us.” The couple walked up to thehouse and knocked on the door.A warm voice said, “Come onin.” When they opened the doorthey saw the damage that wasdone: glass was all over the place, and a broken antique bottle waslying on its side near the piecesof window glass . A man reclining on the couchasked, “Are you the people thatbroke my window?” “Uh...yeah, sir. We’re suresorry about that,” Anthonyreplied.. “Oh, no apology is necessary.Actually I want to thank you.”said the man. “You see, I’m agenie, and I’ve been trapped inthat bottle for a thousandyears. Now that you’vereleased me, I’m allowed togrant three wishes. I’ll giveyou each one wish, but if youdon’t mind, I’ll keep the lastone for myself.” “Wow, that’s great!” responded

Anthony. He pondered a momentand blurted out, “I’d like amillion dollars a year for therest of my life.” “No problem,” said the genie.“You’ve got it, it’s the least Ican do. Magistrate Narda Morgan Is Back This week we announce thereturn to the bench ofSan Ignacio’s no-nonsenseMagistrate in the person ofJamaican Attorney at Law, Mrs.Narda Morgan

Magistrate Morgan’s first dayon the bench was last Monday,May 7. After being away for a fewmonths on maternity leave,Magistrate Morgan returned totown in early May with theaddition of a bouncing new babyboy to the family. We join

the community in wishing thefamily well. During her short tenure on thebench, prior to proceeding onleave, Magistrate Morgan earnedthe reputationof being the “PayForthwith Magistrate” whichhas effectively served as adeterrent for many withcriminal intent. It has become commonknowledge that when an accusedperson either pleas guilty or isfound guilty, depending on thelegally stipulated penalty, thatindividual must either come tocourt with money in their pocketor have someone standing by topay forthwith in order to avoidinstant incarceration. The safest bet therefore is tosteer clear of the courtroom ofMagistrate Morgan becausewhile she is soft spoken andknown to be fair, she has earnedthe reputation of being stern inthe conduct of her judicial duties. This community has long awaitedthe arrival of a Magistrate withthese qualities.

Where Has The Element Of ConsiderationFor Each Other Gone?

Dear Editor; If what I witnessed last week onBurns Avenue was not so serious,it could have easily pass forhumor. Picture the scenario: it wasmid morning and workers were infull swing laboring on the newBurns Avenue pavement. No less than three employeesfrom the electricity companywere busy supervising theinstallation of manholes for theirservice lines. My eyes followed an orangeelectrical extension cord withone end connected to an electricsaw in use to cut the blocks to sizeto fit like the pieces of a puzzlearound the electricity man holewith the other end of the cordplugged into an outlet at apopular vintage restaurantacross the street. Wow I thought, this restaurant isactually providing electricity forthe electricity company to workon their manhole, GREAT!! Then the situation quicklychanged, along comes the

MONTERO’S LUMBER YARD

electricity disconnection man, pliers in hand, ready to cutoff the restaurant’s electricitysupply for late payment of theelectricity bill. The owner begged for the powernot to be disconnected as heassembled the cash from hisdrawer and sped over to thenearby Courts collection agency. The payment, he was told, mustinclude the reconnection fee orelse he will be cut. This begs the question:Where has our considerationfor each other gone?

PRESS RELEASEMonday, May 14th, 2012

The Belize Bank Limited, Belize’s premier banking institution, this year celebrates its 25th Anniversary and announces asignificant rebranding effort for the commercial banking operation.

The Belize Bank Limited is Belize’s oldest and largest, continuously operated banking institution. The Bank of BritishHonduras was first incorporated in December 1902, and opened its doors for business in 1903. The operations werepurchased by the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) in 1912, and the second era of operations lasted until 1987. In April of1987, the RBC operations were purchased by the Belize Bank Limited – a group of local Belizeans investors, beginningthe third era of Belize’s longest uninterrupted banking operations with more than 100 years of service to the country.

Beginning today, the Belize Bank Limited introduces a new look, complete wit a redesigned logo and tagline: The BelizeBank Limited - “Our Country. Your Bank”. Shades of blue and green replace the Belize Bank’s former two-tonedbrand colour, and the Bank’s new look will be reflected in all marketing and branding material and signage in all of its 12branches.

In line with the Bank’s strategic objectives, the Banks goal is “to be the pre-eminent financial service provider inCentral America and the Caribbean”, and in order to achieve this status of pre-eminence the Bank will “maximizevalue for individuals and businesses locally and internationally by providing quality and innovative financialservices, nurturing long-lasting relationships and delivering superior customer service”. The Belize BankLimited continues to be the leading financial services provider in Belize in both the commercial and personal bankingsector, and wanted to create a new image for itself that will support its continued growth and new developmentstrategies. “In an increasing competitive banking environment in Belize, there is no better time than now as the Bankcelebrates its remarked Marketing Manager, for the Belize Bank Limited, Misty Michael.

“The Bank’s focus is to steadfastly deliver superior customer service and build long lasting relationships with itscustomers. In a fairly saturated market where banks are vying for a limited pool of customers, it is difficult tocompete based on rates and product offering. Banks can only set themselves apart from other providers by‘wowing’ customers with the level of service the provide to customers”, continued Michael.

The only bank in Belize named after the country, the Belize Bank thought it fit that its tagline highlights this uniqueperspective. Belize is “Our Country” and the Belize Bank is “Your Bank” - The people’s Bank. The Bank’s newmarketing campaign will see utilisation of local models, locations, culture, history and icons.

The Bank’s new look also includes bold new colours which will assist in creating greater visibility for the Bank in acrowded marketplace. The green in the logo ties the Bank to its past whereas the blue ties it to its parent company - BCBHoldings Ltd, and links it to the future. The sleek, clean lines of the new logo also presents the Bank as modern andforward moving, and highlights that the Bank is professional in its approach to doing business.

Customers can expect to receive the best possible customer service available from the Belize Bank. To this end, allBelize Bank staff are currently participating in Customer Service and Sales training with a view to providingextraordinary value for money and service to customers. The Bank believes that its employees are its greatest asset andis doing all that it can to ensure that staff are properly trained and equipped to serve you - our valued customers.

The Belize Bank Limited is Belize’s largest commercial banking operation with a countrywide network of 12 branches, and an ATM network that continues to expand. Offering a complete range of domestic and international bankingservices, the most sophisticated merchant acquiring system, and the Belize Bank’s sister companies British CaribbeanBank International Limited (BCBIL) and Belize Corporate Services Limited (BCSL) provides a competitive edge overthe competition.

The Belize Bank Limited maintains branch locations in the Corozal Free Zone, Corozal Town, Orange Walk Town, SanPedro, Belize City (Market Square and North Side - Matalon branches), Belmopan, San Ignacio, Dangriga, Placencia, and Punta Gorda with over 24 ATM locations available countrywide. Cancer, Cayo Association And Support GroupAs President of the Cancer Support Group we are inviting the people ofCayo to join us in our first Cancer Walk ever. This event will be held onSaturday, May 26, 2012 and will start from the San IgnacioHospital at 7:30 a.m. sharp and will end at the Macal River Park. Thiswill be followed by our very informative Health Fair which will help toinform and educate our people of this deadly disease.

I am 24 years old, and the elderly son of Elisa Obando, and at presentI am suffering from Hodgkin’s disease. This road has not been easy as Iwas faced with many difficulties along the way. First I had to accept thediagnosis and then the lost of my job followed by the side effects ofchemotherapy. After those difficulties I still consider myself luckybecause my daughter, my wife, family and support group have been veryhelpful. I was also inspired by First Lady Mrs. Kim Barrow, who, withstrength, openness, determination and awareness radiates hope for thoseof us lliving with cancer.

For this and many other reasons I ask that you take advantage of thetests offered during this Cancer Awareness month.
