COASTLANDS RUGBY LEAGUE

On Wednesday 1 August our Boys Rugby League Team competed in the Coastlands Rugby League Tournament at Waipuna Park. It was a fine overcast day, good for playing Rugby League.

There was a pool of 4 teams from Kawerau, Otumoetai, Kaitao and ourselves. We beat Otumoetai first up very easily. Then we played Kaitao beating them by a similar large margin. Our last pool game was against Kawerau which we also won by about a 30 point margin but they were resting their stronger players for the final.

When we came up against Kawerau in the final, it was our toughest game of the day but we came away with the win 22 - 6. Our whole team worked really well together as a unit and everyone played well. Great result with AIMS GAMES a few weeks away.

PB/BOP CROSS COUNTRY

On Friday the 10th of August, 24 Tauranga Intermediate students competed in the PB/BOP cross country event. We arrived at Waipuna Park all very nervous and ready to focus on the races ahead. The weather was perfect. The first race was the Year 7 girls, which started at 11.00am at a blistering pace, our runners had a little catch up to do but we were pleased with our top runner Kalais Going Rm 4 crossing the line in 4th place with the 2nd fastest Tauranga Intermediate girl Madeline Mear Rm 35 coming in 6th.  At 11.30am the Year 7 boys started their race, this was also at a fast pace.  The Tauranga Intermediate runners controlling the pace to take out first and third place. Logan Karauria Rm 23 coming 1st, Lachlan Haycock Rm 29 coming in 3rd. In the year 8 girls race, Kaylee Mudgway Rm 2 crossed the line in 2nd place with Greta Stanton-Hough Rm 27 in  3rd.   The last race of the day was the year 8 boys race, the top two Tauranga Intermediate boys Bryn Fredheim Rm 27and Korban Eades Rm 41 lead the whole way with Korban Eades coming in 1st and Bryn coming in 2nd. The Tauranga Intermediate cross country team ended up with the title of the best cross country team in PB/BOP.

OLYMPIC CHAMPIONSOn Wednesday 8 August I was fortunate enough to meet Hamish Carter - Olympic Triathlon Champion from Athens 2004 at Gate Pa School as he was touring as an ANZ Ambassador.

Hamish spoke to an assembly of children and was very inspirational in what he said - dream it, believe it then do it.

After the assembly Kaylee and I were able to race against Olympians in the ANZ Bus. Kaylee rode the bike in a computer challenge against Alison Shanks and I rowed against former Tauranga Intermediate student Mahe Drysdale. Needless to say, we still have a bit of work to do.

Yesterday at school we were visited by another former student - Peter Burling Olympic Silver Medalist in yachting this year in London. He spoke to the school about his success and olympic experiences and the hard work involved to get to that level. Many students and

teachers got to touch his medal which was surprisingly very heavy. Peter was a very diligent student and was a member of Rata House when he was here in 2002/03. Mrs Storey remembers Peter well and he was a very determined and talented student in her class. Peter also won a gold medal with his science fair project which involved setting sailing rigs.

We really enjoyed meeting Peter in this way and wish him well in his future endeavours.

PB/BOP RUGBY 7’SOn Friday the 16th of August 13 boys vying for selection in the Tauranga Intermediate AIMS sevens rugby team gathered on a wonderful sunny skied morning at Mount Maunganui's Blake Park for the PB/BOP Rugby Sevens Tournament. At stake valuable bragging rights leading in to the AIMS tournament. Coach Matua Te Atirau and his assistant Mr Carlin would use the day to trial a number of player combinations and test set moves trialled only on the training paddock. After a quick coach and managers meeting the boys stripped into what has affectionately become known as the "Roosters" kit. The sides first outing was against a competitive Taupo Intermediate, the boys weathered an initial assault on their line before launching their own attack through potent weapon Peni Lasaqa Rm 22 coming away comfortable winners 35 - 14. The boys took heart from this game and after a rounds break they met Gisborne Intermediate. Many of the boys had billeted the Gisborne players the night before and were keen to send them home with their tails between their legs. Nothing less than a good old fashioned hiding would suffice and Coach Matua Te Atirau read the riot act to his troops before they took the field. The pre-match talk had the desired effect and the players responded against a fresh Gisborne side as this was their first game. Ollie Norris Rm 41 and Connor McLeod Rm 21 stood out in this game with solid grafting play before unleashing wide ranging backs Lenox Jarratt Rm 37 and Michael McMahon Rm 37 to dot down T.I.S once again victorious 29 -12.The next game would see the boys front our friends from the other side of the bridge Mount Intermediate. The Mount were a class below our boys and a lack of training was evident as they were dispatched comfortably 40 Nil.  Captain for the game Lachlan 'Casper' Ririnui Rm 13 stood out with a couple of barnstorming tries through the centre of the ruck and "little men" Taylor Kite Rm 36 and Logan Karauria Rm 23 shining on attack and defence. Next up Te Puke B asked to replace a team who pulled out this Year 7 development team did not trouble the young charges. As Matua's game plans solidified and combinations began to gel forwards hard men Chevy Haworth Rm 13 and Finn Sears Rm 15 ensured that Te Puke would leave the field comfortably licked and nursing several injuries a result of the bone crunching and no nonsense approach at ruck time from these two players. By now the sun was shining on Blake Park and the boys moved into the semi final round meeting Te Puke Intermediate. A rush of blood early would see the boys sink to 15-5 at half-time after leading 5 nil early on in the game. Masters of their own demise thanks to two intercept tries. Coach urged them to rally at half time talk of pride in the jersey and playing for your mates echoed around the teams huddle. After a tense second half two tries late in the match to Justyce Te Kani Rm 1 and Finn Sears Rm 15 would see the boys force extra time and take the game through a quick tap try at the end courtesy of a Te Puke head high. This set up the game of the day between the also unbeaten Ilminster Intermediate and T.I.S. Fastest player Kyle Hamilton dusted his boots removing mud from his sprigs in anticipation of some good ball on the outside and readied himself for the big game. The boys started really well and went into half time with a handy 17-7 lead. However sevens would prove to be very much a game of two halves the boys scored once in the second half to Ilminster's 3 being undone by two conversions. Some valuable lessons coming from the game especially the need to place the ball under the posts and to not over commit to rucks. Overall an awesome day some fantastic rugby and the result of this tournament has set up a great outing for the boys during the AIMS tournament at Greerton with Ilminster also placed in their pool. Thanks to Connor and Finn's Mums for transporting and all the parents who turned out and supported during the day.

COACH PROFILEName: Lauren Stull

Sport/Team Name: AIMS Hip Hop and AIMS Gymnastics

Occupation: Teacher in Rm 18 at Tauranga Intermediate (Totara House)

What got you started in Coaching: The main reason I started coaching was to share my passion for sport. I also started coaching because I love working with kids and helping them achieve their goals.

Sporting Background/Qualifications: Throughout my life I have participated in a variety of sports including ice figure skating, dancing (ballet, jazz and contemporary), gymnastics, swimming, netball and soccer.

Personal Successes: My most memorable achievement was gaining my degree and being accepted into postgraduate study at Massey University.

Best Memory as a Coach: It is so hard to choose just one memory. I thoroughly enjoy seeing all the hard work and effort the kids have put into training come to fruition on game day. That is definitely the best part of being a coach! If I had to choose one memory it would be seeing some of the students I have coached go on to play for representative teams and compete at a national level.

Goals in Coaching: My goals as a coach are to provide the stepping stones to help my students achieve their dreams as well as making them realise their full potential (and to get Gold medals at AIMS games, of course!).

Best piece of life advice: Grasp every opportunity offered to you in life with both hands... "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like hard work." ~ Thomas Edison

Person you admire the Most:

1) Irene Van Dyk: An incredible sportswoman, school teacher and mother! She is proof of the fact that 'girls can do ANYTHING'.

2) My mum (Leanne) and my dad (Nick): For teaching me to always be the best that I can be and to never ever give up, even when things get tough!

Interests/Hobbies: Dancing, studying, tramping, going to the gym, reading, swimming, baking/ cake decorating and anything that involves the great outdoors!

Favourite Food: Cannelloni

Favourite  Music: Anything I can dance to!
